King Kong-sized meteor just whizzed passed Earth on Christmas Day

Jak Connor | Science, Space, Health & Robotics | Dec 26, 2019 3:03 AM CST

While you would originally be thinking that it would be Santa Claus landing on your roof on Christmas Day, it very well could of been a meteor the size of King Kong.

King Kong-sized meteor just whizzed passed Earth on Christmas Day

The meteor which is called 2019 YB1 was scheduled to have a near miss with Earth on Christmas Day at around 11:41 GMT. NASA says that the space rock is estimated to be anywhere between 13 and 28 meters in diameter (almost 100 feet).

How close was it to colliding with Earth's atmosphere and breaking up? Estimations indicate that 2019 YB1 was about 993,000 miles from our planet, and while that might sound like quite the distance NASA says that this encounter falls under "close approach". At the time of its passing, 2019 YB1 was hurdling through space at 12,303 mph.

Russia says it successfully tested a countrywide internet alternative

Jak Connor | Internet & Websites | Dec 26, 2019 2:16 AM CST

The internet seems to be breaking up, in terms of countries separating themselves from global internet infrastructure.

Russia says it successfully tested a countrywide internet alternative

Russia seems to be the next country that will join China and Iran in censoring any content that is present on their network. This censoring task will become much easier as Russia is moving towards having their own countrywide internet, or at least that is what Russia's Ministry of Communications announced.

According to an article from the BBC, Russia says it successfully tested its own internet connection, and users on the network barely experienced any changes. Russia will also be moving towards monitoring any content on its new internet, much like China's Great Firewall or Iran's state-owned Telecommunication Company.

Grand Theft Auto 6 rumored for Fall 2021: misses PS5, new Xbox launch

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Dec 25, 2019 10:13 PM CST

It seems that the holiday season is the perfect time for a bunch of Grand Theft Auto 6 news, with rumors flying that Rockstar Games will base GTA 6 in Jamaica, and Columbia.

Grand Theft Auto 6 rumored for Fall 2021: misses PS5, new Xbox launch

But now we have news that Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch in Fall 2021, missing the launch of Sony's new PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's new Xbox Series X consoles which will be launching in late 2020. I just reported a new rumor that Microsoft will price its new Xbox Series X console at $499, while Sony is rumored to also slap a $499 price on its PlayStation 5.

Twitter user PSErebus tweeted that "Grand Theft Auto VI from developer Rockstar Games is currently scheduled to be released in Fall 2021". With both of the next-generation consoles in the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 launching in late-2020, Rockstar will miss the all-important launch window and mega sales that would be like a major star alignment. But... Grand Theft Auto 6 is also so big on its own that it doesn't matter, it'll sell 10s of millions of copies no matter what.

Xbox Series X rumor: launching November 22 for $499

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Dec 25, 2019 9:11 PM CST

Microsoft has announced and detailed (at least, in part) its next-generation Xbox Series X console, but the one detail that Microsoft hasn't been clear on just yet... is price.

Xbox Series X rumor: launching November 22 for $499

Xbox Series X is a powerful console packing a semi-custom chip based on the Zen 2 architecture and not-yet-released RDNA 2-based GPU solution -- but we could be very surprised on the price. According to a new leak on 4chan -- yeah, I know -- we are to expect Microsoft to price the Xbox Series X at $499. This is the same price as the rumored PlayStation 5 pricing at $499.

It sounds nuts, but Microsoft is no stranger to selling their Xbox console at a loss -- look at the many billions of dollars it lost in selling the original Xbox. It might have cost billions at first, but it sold millions of Xbox console and pushed Microsoft right into the battle with Sony and the PlayStation 2 at the time.

Grand Theft Auto 6 could be based in Jamaica, Colombia

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Dec 25, 2019 8:25 PM CST

Rockstar Games will break the gaming world when it launches Grand Theft Auto 6, something that I broke the news on all the way back in February 2015.

Grand Theft Auto 6 could be based in Jamaica, Colombia

But now, we're hearing about where Grand Theft Auto 6 will be set, with rumors flying that Rockstar will set GTA 6 somewhere like South America. The news on Grand Theft Auto 6 is coming from Rockstar sending out Christmas presents to their staff... and some eagle-eyed readers.

One of the Rockstar Games employees posted their present on Twitter, with a bunch of badges that include Rockstar logos on top of the Jamaican and Colombian flags. This has led people to believe that Grand Theft Auto 6 could take place in both South America and Colombia.

Intel Xe DG1 teased: 96 EUs, 768 shaders in Tiger Lake CPU

Anthony Garreffa | CPU, APU & Chipsets | Dec 25, 2019 7:31 PM CST

Intel has its Xe GPU still cooking in the oven, as it does with its upcoming Tiger Lake CPUs -- but now we have some more details on the Xe DG1 GPU itself.

Intel Xe DG1 teased: 96 EUs, 768 shaders in Tiger Lake CPU

VideoCardz is reporting the latest leak on Intel's new Xe DG1 GPU from a leak from the EEC, which shows us that DG1 could sport 96 Execution Units, and up to 768 shading units. This would mean Xe DG1 is a very entry-level graphics solution, something along the lines of integrated graphics now -- or up to a GeForce GT 1030 (yeah, the one without the X).

We are to expect Intel's Tiger Lake to roll out with 96 EUs based on Gen12 Xe graphics, compared to the 72 EUs on Skylake, 48 EUs on Broadwell, and 40 EUs on Haswell. We should expect more news on Xe and DG1 at CES 2020, which is right around the corner.

New Squadron 42 trailer rings in the holidays with sci-fi splendor

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 25, 2019 4:18 PM CST

Squadron 42 might not be dropping until Q3 2020, but new footage shows it'll be worth the wait.

New Squadron 42 trailer rings in the holidays with sci-fi splendor

Star Citizen's upcoming singleplayer campaign is a ways off, but Cloud Imperium dropped a new trailer to show the progress they've made. The result is some pretty impressive visuals that're straight out of an old 1970s John Berkey painting, complete with otherworldly spacecraft and animations that belong in a Kubrick film. The animations look smooth, the renders are all incredibly well-designed, and the lighting and atmospheric effects add a huge layer of immersion to the footage.

We're guessing this isn't exactly gameplay--probably in-engine rendering--but Cloud Imperium really has spun some magic here. Everything I see makes me nostalgic for Mass Effect, and reminds me what could've been. There's even some footage of the first-person elements we'll see in Squadron 42, like floating in space amidst a ruined space cruiser.

Free Final Fantasy 7 Remake demo coming soon to PS4

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 25, 2019 12:23 PM CST

Square Enix will roll out a Final Fantasy VII Remake trial version ahead of release, possibly in time for the holidays.

Free Final Fantasy 7 Remake demo coming soon to PS4

A new listing for a Final Fantasy VII Remake demo popped up on Gamestat, a tracking service that shows everything that's coming soon to the PlayStation Store. As of the time of writing the FF7R demo isn't yet available on the PS Store. Gamestat has been accurate in the past and outed Resident Evil 3 ahead of Capcom's official reveal.

Square Enix has yet to formally announce the demo and there's been no mention of it being tied to a pre-order exclusive. The demo is listed for the Americas, Europe, Japan, and Asia, and it might be a limited timed experience on PlayStation 4. Maybe just maybe Square Enix will drop it tomorrow in celebration of Christmas.

If you are a Fallout 76 player and don't want to lose all of your hard work you have stored in your inventory, don't jump onto the game for the time being.

Twitter flaw: 17 million phone numbers matched to respective accounts

A security researcher named Ibrahim Balic has spoken to TechCrunch about a flaw in Twitter's Android app. This security flaw gave Balic a window of opportunity to successfully match 17 million phone numbers with their respective accounts.

The users that had their numbers exposed and linked to their accounts were located in counters such as France, Greece, and Turkey. It should also be noted that some of the exposed numbers and accounts were prominent politicians and officials.
