How Atlus' draconian Persona 5 streaming rules hurt fans

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 5, 2017 11:31 AM CDT

Persona 5's release is a massive day for Atlus, but instead of celebrating, the publisher rolled out some draconian and outlandish streaming rules for gamers to follow, proving whoever is in charge simply doesn't understand the current generation of media content consumption.

How Atlus' draconian Persona 5 streaming rules hurt fans

Atlus has a tight stranglehold over Persona 5 content. Not only did Atlus block Persona 5 screenshots, video recordings, and streams on the PS4 itself, but now the publisher has rolled out some pretty harsh restrictions for streamers who circumvent the block with capture cards. If you break the rules, the publisher has threatened to deliver a copyright strike on your YouTube channel, which can lead to account suspension.

So what are the rules, and why are they so bad? Remember that weird agreement Warner Bros made YouTubers sign with Shadow of Mordor? The one that controller what YouTubers could say and show? Atlus is treating every single Persona 5 gamer and streamer the same way, upholding them to this weird phantom agreement.

Project Scorpio reveal may have Crackdown 3 gameplay

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 5, 2017 9:26 AM CDT

Microsoft's "monster" native 4K Project Scorpio console will be revealed tomorrow, and we should see major Xbox exclusives like Forza 7 and Crackdown 3 exemplifying the console's raw power.

Project Scorpio reveal may have Crackdown 3 gameplay

Eurogamer's Digital Foundry has confirmed that it will reveal Microsoft's Project Scorpio tomorrow at 9AM EST / 6AM PST, but what about the games? Windows Central previously reported that the monster 4K console would showcase high-end native 4K gameplay in major Xbox exclusives such as Forza 7, as well as third-party games like Shadow of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Battlefront 2. We're not sure if Microsoft will show off any third-party games during tomorrow's reveal, but it's highly likely we'll see a game that's been MIA for quite a while: Crackdown 3.

Crackdown's official Twitter recently teasedsome new info on the horizon, and we're pretty sure Crackdown 3 will be shown off alongside the system's big spec reveal. "2017 is shaping up to be great! #Crackdown3 info is on the horizon, and we're ready to bring the boom!" the Twitter post reads.

AMD's new drivers support 8K 60Hz over dual DP cables

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Apr 5, 2017 6:23 AM CDT

AMD has just unleashed its latest Radeon Software Crimson ReLive 17.4.1 drivers, with new driver-level VR features, new display technologies, bug fixes, and more. You can grab the new drivers here.

AMD's new drivers support 8K 60Hz over dual DP cables

Inside, Crimson ReLive 17.4.1 includes support for Oculus tech Asynchronous Spacewarp (ASW) for the Radeon R9 Fury series, Radeon R9 390 series, and Radeon R9 290 series - as well as support for SteamVR Asynchronous Reprojection on the Radeon RX 480 and RX 470 when you've got Windows 10.

The bigger deal here is that the new 17.4.1 drivers feature DP1.4 HBR3 support, and some 8K monitor goodness with 8K 60Hz with 2 x DP cables, and 8K 30Hz with a single DP cable. This is the big thing for me, as AMD is planting the 8K seeds for its upcoming Radeon RX Vega graphics card, that will make good use of its new HBM2 tech and High Bandwidth Cache.

Apple's next-gen iMac: 5K display and Kaby Lake CPU

Anthony Garreffa | Computer Systems | Apr 5, 2017 1:35 AM CDT

Apple is planning new iMac models for later this year, with the 2018 refresh reportedly including a high-end 5K model, with the new iMac powered by Intel's latest Kaby Lake family of processors.

Apple's next-gen iMac: 5K display and Kaby Lake CPU

Apple marketing boss Phil Schiller along with engineering head Craig Federighi have confirmed new iMacs are indeed coming out this year, but they didn't tease any of the internals or the displays Apple would be using. Apple could release a new iMac with a native 5K resolution, while Intel's latest Kaby Lake family of CPUs will surely be on offer - with up to the Core i7-7700K available.

USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 will most likely be the default connectivity, and since Apple has already debuted the TouchBar - something they unveiled on their enthusiast MacBook Pro. The new iMac could feature a TouchBar of some sorts, but I'm sure we'll be filled in with all of the nitty gritty details in the coming months.

Radeon RX 580, RX 570, RX 550 benchmarked leaked

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Apr 4, 2017 10:33 PM CDT

AMD will be rebooting their Radeon RX 400 series graphics cards with the new Radeon RX 500 series, with a slight bump in performance, and a nice dent off the price. Now we have some leaked benchmark results on the new RX 580, RX 570, and RX 550 cards.

Radeon RX 580, RX 570, RX 550 benchmarked leaked

First off, the Radeon RX 580 will have a faster GPU clock compared to the RX 480, with 2304 stream processors, 144 TMUs, 32 ROPs. The GPU will be clocked at 1340MHz boost on the reference Radeon RX 580, capable of 6.17 TFLOPs of compute performance, in both 4GB and 8GB models - with GDDR5 clocked at 8Gbps on a 256-bit memory bus.

AMD will price the Radeon RX 580 4GB at $199, and the Radeon RX 580 8GB at $249 - compared to the $299 price of the RX 480 8GB when it launched last year. This will provide AMD with a huge win in the $199-$249 market, especially against the GTX 1060.

AMD Ryzen 5 1600 reviewed, 6C/12T combats Core i7-5930K

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Apr 4, 2017 8:51 PM CDT

AMD shook up the enthusiast level CPU market with the release of its Ryzen 7 1800X, a new 8C/16T processor that has some pretty good legs in multi-threaded applications - but what about the 4C/8T and 6C/12T parts? That's where the new mid-range Ryzen 5 family comes into play, with the first early review on AMD's upcoming Ryzen 5 1600 processor comes into play.

AMD Ryzen 5 1600 reviewed, 6C/12T combats Core i7-5930K

The new AMD Ryzen 5 1600 is quite the beast, with 6C/12T of performance - and priced at just $219... considering the Core i7-7700K (4C/8T, but it is a faster gaming CPU) costs $345. If we compare 6C/12T between AMD and Intel, then we look at the Core i7-5930K which still costs a huge $599 on Amazon. AMD is offering the Ryzen 5 1600 for nearly 1/3 the price, but offering 6C/12T performance for multi-threaded CPU performance, and now we have some leaked benchmarks to look over.

First up, some multi-threaded CPU-Z testing, where it beats the 4C/8T processor from Intel in the Core i7-7700K.

007 producers confident in retaining Daniel Craig

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Apr 4, 2017 8:33 PM CDT

After reprising his role as Bond for 2015's poorly-received 'Spectre' during which he proclaimed to journalists that he would "rather break this glass and slash my wrists" than return, discussions have apparently continued with producers who are increasingly confident that he'll be back for one last go around.

007 producers confident in retaining Daniel Craig

According to sources who've spoken to gossip rag Page Six, "Daniel's talks with Barbara [Brocolli] are going in the right direction. They have a script - screenwriting duo Neal Purvis and Robert Wade are writing and they'll go into production as soon as Daniel is ready to commit." Neither Craig, nor Brocooli have spoken on record in recent times, but the quiet is promising.

It's no surprise that producers and the studio would be keen to have Craig continue; his last two appearances in 'Skyfall' and 'Spectre' have grossed $2 billion worldwide combined.

Zelda's future is open world, says Aonuma

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 4, 2017 6:29 PM CDT

Zelda may never return to its overhead top-down roots, and Breath of the Wild's massive open-world scope will likely become the new mainstay for the Zelda series.

Zelda's future is open world, says Aonuma

Nintendo went through incredible lengths to make Zelda: Breath of the Wild's open world feel alive. The devs created a new dynamic physics engine that's incredibly realistic. The team added interactive weather and atmospheric effects that actually affect the game, not to mention the amazing creatures and animals that truly add depth to the world.

In fact, I'd go so far to say that Zelda: Breath of the Wild's open world feels more alive than almost every other open-world game I've ever played. Exploration is so organic and genuinely enchanting, and so many games could learn so much from Nintendo's approach.

BioWare reveals how it'll fix Mass Effect: Andromeda

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 4, 2017 5:23 PM CDT

If you've been paying attention to our recent coverage, then you'll know Mass Effect: Andromeda is a mess. The game needs tons of fixes, and BioWare will kick off its wave of obligatory patches and updates starting on Thursday.

BioWare reveals how it'll fix Mass Effect: Andromeda

BioWare has pledged to fix Mass Effect: Andromeda and right on queue the devs have revealed a roadmap of how they plan to do that. Like Square Enix did with Final Fantasy 15, BioWare will rely on a series of download updates to shore up the game's rough edges. At this point, I think it'd take 20GB+ to fix the game...and that might even be too small.

For BioWare's credit, though, the changes are heavily based on community feedback. Patch 1.05 is the first major patch of the fusillade of updates, and it'll bring a host of fixes players have been asking for since day one. Gamers will soon be able to skip ahead while traveling between planets in the galaxy map, have boosted inventory space (this one hit me hard), improving the eyes for humans and asari, voice-over bugs, and more. Check below for the full patch notes, and the full post from BioWare General Manager Aaryn Flynn.

Dark Souls is 'completely finished...for now'

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 4, 2017 4:32 PM CDT

Dark Souls is finished. Wrapped-up. Kaput. Game over. But there's a small ember of hope flickering in the franchise's ashes that could one day ignite a roaring bonfire. If, of course, From Software supplies the fuel for the raging inferno.

Dark Souls is 'completely finished...for now'

As we reported back in 2015, Hidetaki Miyazaki, the godfather of the Souls series, considers Dark Souls 3 to be the "big closure of the series." Dark Souls 3's Ringed City DLC signifies the end of an era of death, rolling, git gud memes, and sunbro worship: Dark Souls is officially over.

"Dark Souls series is completely done as of DS3: The Ringed City," Miyazaki recently said in an interview with Japanese games magazine Famitsu.

New Duke Nukem game is highly unlikely, says Gearbox

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 4, 2017 2:22 PM CDT

Gearbox Software is wary of releasing another Duke Nukem game, and for good reason: Duke Nukem Forever was a huge mess.

New Duke Nukem game is highly unlikely, says Gearbox

Duke Nukem makes an appearance in Bullestorm's Full Clip remaster, but that's really the extent that Gearbox has planned for the Ultimate Alien Ass-Kicker. If you pre-order the Bullestorm remaster, you get access to "Duke Nukem's Bullestorm Tour," a new mode that replaces the game's protagonist with Nukem. Like a washed-up actor, Duke's future might dissolve into cameo spots like these.

In a recent interview with Dualshockers, Gearbox's Vincent Slaven pretty much confirmed the dev-turned-publisher has no interest in tackling a new Duke Nukem game: "Duke Nukem 2... no, but Bulletstorm 2, I think: maybe."

Insomniac's new Spider-Man game may not release in 2017

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 4, 2017 11:40 AM CDT

Despite Marvel's affirmations of a 2017 release, Insomniac Games isn't sure that its new Spider-Man game will launch this year.

Insomniac's new Spider-Man game may not release in 2017

Insomniac Games is currently working on a high-profile PS4 exclusive Spider-Man game with a "brand new authentic story" with a "seasoned Peter Parker." The game was revealed at Sony's E3 2016 expo, triggering tons of hype within the PlayStation community. So when will it release? No one knows for sure...maybe not even Marvel.

In a recent stream, Marvel Digital Media Group Vice President & Executive Editor Ryan Penagos said that Insomniac's Spider-Man game would release in 2017. "And there's much more on the horizon for 2017 like Spider-Man coming to the PlayStation 4." But Insomniac Games apparently didn't get the memo.

Project Scorpio reveal confirmed for Thursday

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 4, 2017 10:37 AM CDT

Eurogamer's Digital Foundry has confirmed that it will reveal Microsoft's new 4K-ready Project Scorpio console on Thursday, April 6 at 9AM EST (6AM PST).

Project Scorpio reveal confirmed for Thursday

In a rather bizarre move, it appears that an independent publication will reveal a big-name console rather than the company who made it. Eurogamer's Digital Foundry will have an 'exclusive reveal' for Project Scorpio, and we're not sure if Microsoft will also reveal the system's specifics.

In any case, Thursday will be one of the most important days in Microsoft's history. What Digital Foundry has to say about Project Scorpio could make or break the system's appeal. Can the 6TFLOP console really do native 4K gaming? Is it capable of 4K 60FPS? Will gamers have to download huge 4K asset packs that bloat out install sizes of games to insane proportions? What specs is Scorpio packing--is it Vega, or Polaris, or a mixture of both? Does it rock AMD's new Ryzen CPU?

Mass Effect: Andromeda epic biotic god build

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 4, 2017 7:39 AM CDT

Mass Effect: Andromeda's combat can be great, but it can also be quite overwhelming, especially when you don't know which skills are good. Having efficient skill synergy is absolutely essential in this game, and we've found an amazing pure biotic build that turns players into Jedi gods.

Mass Effect: Andromeda epic biotic god build

BioWare's latest Mass Effect game gives access to 24 different skills and abilities, but we can only use three skills at a time. Sure there's the Favorites bar that allows us to switch skill loadouts, but it's clunky and awkward, and your powers can't be used right away--they have to cool down first. So finding the perfect three-skill synergy is crucial. At first I tried to go with a jack-of-all-trades type of build...but it failed pretty badly. I just couldn't find the right skills. Then I tried to play as a full biotic, but that didn't go well either. I was just using the wrong skills.

Then I came across this biotic god build on Reddit, and I never looked back. I pretty much never die now, and all the enemies are pushovers--including the massive Architect boss. This build proves you don't need to complicate things with multi-skill synergies. It uses three skills and three skills only: Annihilation, Nova, and Charge. Barrier is used, too, but it's not an active skill per se.

Samsung spends $9 billion on expansions, for the iPhone

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Apr 4, 2017 12:59 AM CDT

Apple is expected to blow the doors off of its new multi-billion HQ in a few months, with the announcement and reveal of the first next-gen iPhone in a long time - that wasn't a slight upgrade on the previous-gen handset. It will reportedly roll out with next-gen features, an OLED display, in what should be the 'next big thing' in cameras, and more.

Samsung spends $9 billion on expansions, for the iPhone

But Apple don't manufacturer the OLED displays themselves, that's the job of their #1 competitor: Samsung. According to South Korean news site The Investor, Samsung is expanding its OLED production capabilities, with $8.9 billion being spent on expanding OLED production - this year alone. Apple shifting into the world of OLED has most likely driven Samsung to the $9 billion investment, as it will want to lead the mobile OLED display market.

Samsung has been using OLED screens in its flagship smartphones for a few years now, but Apple does big business in flagship smartphones, too. Samsung currently has 95% of the market, which is one of the reasons Apple would've chosen their competitor in the smartphone business, to make their new OLED displays for the next-gen iPhone. The new iPhone will reportedly be called the iPhone X - with another iPhone that will succeed the iPhone 7 in what should be the iPhone 7S.

ASUS unveils ROG Areion, a 10GbE Ethernet PCIe adapter

Anthony Garreffa | Networking | Apr 3, 2017 11:36 PM CDT

The networking world is going through some changes, after the 1GbE standard becoming a household name on motherboards, with 10GbE being too expensive to shift over.

ASUS unveils ROG Areion, a 10GbE Ethernet PCIe adapter

ASUS is a company that makes high-end components and products, so it made sense that during their recent 'Outshine the Competition' event in Berlin, ASUS teased a new PCIe-based 10GbE adapter. The new ASUS ROG Areion is a 10GbE Ethernet adapter that has a huge heat sink, and plugs into a PCIe 3.0 x4 port.

The ROG Areion is also backwards compatible with slower networking standards, with 5GbE, 2.5GbE, 1GbE, and 100Mbps - but 10GbE is why we're all here... over 1GB/sec on your network is a huge deal for some people, especially content creators.
