DOOM: Annihilation movie trailer has dropped

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Mar 12, 2019 9:28 PM CDT

DOOM Eternal will be released sometime this year and will be the second entry into a much revitalized and kick ass DOOM franchise, but did you know there was a new DOOM-related movie coming out? Yeah, me either but FWIW it's called DOOM: Annihilation, and it looks like a pile of sh*t.

DOOM: Annihilation movie trailer has dropped

There you go, I hope you enjoyed that 30-second teaser trailer to a 'movie' called DOOM: Annihilation. At the time of writing there were around 800 likes and over 11,000 dislikes with under 500,000 views. Instead of talking about how bad it looks, I'll let some of the YouTube comments do that for me:

I think the one I laughed at the most for far too long was the one that called this the Fallout 76 of horror movies. Ugh, I don't even know what to think about that, but as another YouTube comment said how the hell did Bethesda and id Software let this happen, using their IP and letting it turn into a movie that looks this bad in the year leading into the huge release of DOOM Eternal is beyond me. The hell, man.

Apex Legends' first battle pass is NOT dropping today

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Mar 12, 2019 8:27 PM CDT

EA recently updated its Origin app which now include the required asset files for the Battle Pass to Apex Legends which will kick off its first season, with @RealApexNews on Twitter tweeted out that @OriginInsider "accidentally added this image there. So the text might be real too".

Apex Legends' first battle pass is NOT dropping today

After the tweet, Respawn community manager Jay Frechette said on Reddit that it is "not coming out today". Frechette addressed the various amounts of datamining that has happened with Apex since its launch, reiterating that "you should not treat any of that info as a source of truth. There's stuff in there that is very old, or things we've tried in the past and cut--remember our design process is to prototype and play lots of ideas--and some of it may be things we're still building for Apex Legends".

Frechette added: "Finding this stuff by no means confirms that it'll ever come out. At best you should treat any posts about this as a rumor and the real info will come from us when we're ready to show off what's coming next".

NVIDIA could tease its next-gen Ampere GPU on 7nm at GTC 19

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Mar 12, 2019 7:52 PM CDT

If you remember my exclusive report from April 2, 2018 you'll remember that I said t hat NVIDIA would be launching its Turing GPU later in the year, which it did, and then it would be launching Ampere "sometime in the future". Well, that future could be now.

NVIDIA could tease its next-gen Ampere GPU on 7nm at GTC 19

NVIDIA is hosting its annual GPU Technology Conference (GTC) next week in California, but what will they be showing off? Volta is old news in the high-performance computing (HPC) world, and Turing has been cut into countless variants throughout the Quadro RTX, GeForce RTX, and new GeForce GTX families of products. So, what's next then?

The next generation GPU architecture that will come after Turing will be Ampere, which we should expect to arrive on the 7nm node. Right now all of the Turing GPUs are made on the 12nm node, while I expect Ampere to be nailed into the 7nm node.

Gearbox teases Borderlands 3 reveal on March 28

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 12, 2019 5:42 PM CDT

Gearbox and Take-Two have been teasing Borderlands 3 for a while now, but the co-op shoot-and-loot FPS should be announced this month during PAX East.

Gearbox teases Borderlands 3 reveal on March 28

After years of development, Gearbox is finally ready to unveil Borderlands 3. Today the developer shared a very conspicuous and loud teaser proclaiming some big announcement on March 28, which coincides with Gearbox's big one-hour PAX East showcase. The developer has a storied history with PAX East so the timing makes sense.

Official details are light, but we do know the game is powered by Unreal Engine 4 technology and features dramatically improved lighting effects, textures, and atmospheric visuals. Unverified reports say classes like the assassin and siren will make a return in Borderlands 3, alongside a soldier who can call in mechs and a beastmaster who can summon and control in-game animals.

Google teases new gaming platform

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 12, 2019 3:18 PM CDT

Google invites consumers to gather around for its new vision of gaming at GCD 2019.

Google teases new gaming platform

Reports indicate Google is developing a new gaming platform ecosystem similar to Microsoft's Xbox LIVE, complete with new hardware. The idea is Google's service will tie together its Google Play storefront, the planned game streaming Project Stream service, and a possible games console or low-cost set-top box. Supposedly the controller for Google's new gaming vision was leaked ahead of schedule, but reports now say it's not real. If real, we predict the controller will be compatible with mobile, desktop, laptop and Google's new games hardware.

Now Google teases its new gaming focus with a new video. The footage clearly highlights various genres of games from racing, to exotic RPGs, sports games, space sims, and medieval battlers, making us think it's for Project Stream. It prompts gamers to "discover a new way to play." There's also a curious little noise at the end that could be the noise Google's console makes when it's turned on.

Hype hits service games the hardest

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 12, 2019 2:08 PM CDT

Hype is always a double-edged sword. It can be used to cut through moneybags and spill cash everywhere via pre-orders and boost shares, or deliver vicious wounds to game developers and publishers. Two recent games in particular show that hype hits service games the hardest: Fallout 76 and BioWare's ambitious new IP Anthem.

Hype hits service games the hardest

Gaming hype is a very powerful tool. It excites and engages gamers across the world, creating strong buzz for a project, propelling tons of articles, videos, and threads about a project. Publishers feed off of this attention and developers use the positive energy to supercharge their work. Gamers discuss the possibilities for their favorite sequels, or what direction the new IP will take, or how the game will evolve with a new engine. But hype also builds tremendous expectations that can't ever be met, especially when the hype is built from bullshots and pre-alpha footage that simply don't represent the final game. This, as we've learned, can be very dangerous.

Both Fallout 76 and Anthem represent failed experiments who were overwhelmed by the burgeoning weight of hype. Fallout 76 was hit hardest due to Bethesda's mismanagement and misunderstanding of how live service games actually work, but BioWare also played Dr. Frankenstein with Anthem, which was once described as a potential Destiny-killer (instead, as GuerrillaDawg aptly said, it became a PS4-killer).

Halo: Infinite may have ongoing live campaign

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 12, 2019 1:04 PM CDT

The industry has shifted. Games are no longer self-contained slices of interactive media, but have grown into sprawling, never-ending online games with tons of spending opportunities. Microsoft is such a big proponent of this live service model that they've formed their entire Xbox gaming business around it. Hardware, subscriptions, retail games--everything Xbox does serves the almighty engagement dollar.

Halo: Infinite may have ongoing live campaign

So what does this mean for big marquee games like Halo: Infinite? Live service hooks, of course. Microtransactions, multiplayer progression grinds, community-driven updates, and Game Pass subscription conduits...all of these are now baked into first-party Xbox games. And since Xbox is a service now, these games are coming to PC too. The sooner gamers, investors, and consumers realize these points, the easier it'll be to understand the shifting marketplace and Microsoft's core focus. Big games like Halo: Infinite will adopt these structures for maximum recurring revenues.

But some games could innovate on this model. Using live services, 343 Industries could do something more interesting with Halo: Infinite's campaign. We could see an infusion of live aspects into the campaign itself to offer more replayability.

Intel teases its new control panel for discrete GPUs

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Mar 12, 2019 6:09 AM CDT

Intel is ramping up towards its industry event at GDC 2019 next week, with the official Twitter page for Intel Graphics recently teasing the new control panel coming to Intel and its future discrete GPUs.

Intel teases its new control panel for discrete GPUs

The new control panel lookks very Steam-ish and that's not a bad thing for me, and it's a vast upgrade on the aging look of NVIDIA's GeForce control panel. As good as GFE looks, the NVIDIA control panel looks beyond Plain Jane compared to the tease of Intel's upcoming control panel. Lots of work has gone into it by the looks of things, with large buttons and various toggles we'll get to play with.

Hopefully we see more of this during The Odyssey event next week, as the hype train for Intel's first discrete graphics card since the Intel i740 (how good was Trespasser on it!) arrives in 2020.

Mortal Kombat 11 has awesome 'Fatal Blow' comeback mechanics

Jak Connor | Gaming | Mar 12, 2019 5:00 AM CDT

The core fighting mechanics for Mortal Kombat 11 will be different to that of the previous games in the franchise ,and most importantly will be very different than Mortal Kombat X.

Mortal Kombat 11 has awesome 'Fatal Blow' comeback mechanics

NetherRealm, the developer for the soon to be released Mortal Kombat 11 has given some details on the changes that have been made to Mortal Kombat's core fighting. At the same time the company also touched on the quality of the content that is going to be added to Mortal Kombat 11 after its launch. According to NetherRealm boss Shaun Himmerick, who talked to The Official Xbox Magazine, NetherRealm "plan to keep adding to the game and supporting the game well after launch. The features planned to be added to the game even in the first couple months are pretty awesome. There is more coming."

Himmerick also explains that there has been an altercation to the core fighting mechanics of Mortal Kombat, as the developer are "separating the players' meter and having Fatal Blows not require meter". In Mortal Kombat X players were required to manage their bar and choose what they wanted to spend their meter on (enhanced moves, combo breaks, special moves etc). Now players won't have to manage the meter as it grows over time and does not require an output of damage, or an absorption damage to increase. Fatal Blows has also been added to Mortal Kombat 11 which is a one-time-use catch-up mechanic that can only activated when the player is below 30% health. The full explanation from Himmerick has been provided below, Mortal Kombat 11 is planned for release on April 23.

FromSoftware CEO is interested in 'Dark Souls battle royale'

Jak Connor | Gaming | Mar 12, 2019 5:00 AM CDT

There is no doubt that battle royale games are the most popular game genre out there right now. With titles such as Apex Legends and Fortnite dominating the market, is there room for a new kind of battle royale? Perhaps one that captures the difficulty of Dark Souls?

FromSoftware CEO is interested in 'Dark Souls battle royale'

In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Hidetaka Miyazaki, President of FromSoftware and developer of the Dark Souls franchise expressed his excitement towards the new genre. Miyazaki says that FromSoftware certainly do have their eyes on battle royale games and other 'live service' games such as Destiny and Anthem. While this may not impact the current development process for FromSoftware, the possibility of the developer creating one of these games is not entirely ruled out.

Miyazaki says "There's always the possibility. These games are definitely fun. And we're interested in the patterns they are taking. If we did it, it might be a bit different! But we're definitely interested and there's definitely that possibility in the future. We'd love to take a crack at them some day." This could mean that we might see a Dark Souls-like battle royale game in the future, as FromSoftware is known for their high-level of difficulty within their games I'm sure the developer would incorporate this within their battle royale experience.

Devil May Cry 5 data-miners find co-op mode/Vergil files

Jak Connor | Gaming | Mar 12, 2019 3:00 AM CDT

Capcom will be bringing some brand new content to the recently released Devil May Cry 5, but what could be coming within that new content is the ability of being able to play Vergil.

Devil May Cry 5 data-miners find co-op mode/Vergil files

We first heard about Capcom bringing some new content to Devil May Cry 5 back when the trailer for the title leaked at the beginning of December. The trailer that leaked revealed that the 'Bloody Palace' mode that was present in previous releases would be coming to Devil May Cry 5 during April of 2019.

Data miners have gone through the game files of Capcom's Devil May Cry 5 and found some quite interesting file names that could suggest some new contents to go alongside the 'Blood Palace' addition. Judging by the files names found in the images within the entirety of this post, we can see "playerVergil" and a bunch of other file names regarding a co-op mode. The data mining didn't reveal when this new content would be added to Devil May Cry 5 but I would suspect that it would be sometime throughout April as the previously leak suggested.

We see Yamamura traverse the level covering quite a distance and using the environment to his advantage. Players that are planning on picking up Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice should take note of the use of corners, distractions, back-stabs and enemy movements. Doing this will allow for future players to walk into the game with a slightly better understanding which could result in less initial deaths for the player. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is planned for release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on March 22nd. For more

NVIDIA acquires Mellanox in a deal worth $6.9 billion

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Mar 11, 2019 9:28 PM CDT

The rumors from the last 48 hours or so have been correct: NVIDIA has just announced it is acquiring Mellanox in a deal worth $6.9 billion. Mellanox is a networking company that is a leader in its field, building super-fast interconnects for datacenters, a market that NVIDIA itself dominates in with its GPUs.

NVIDIA acquires Mellanox in a deal worth $6.9 billion

Mellanox was being eyed off by other companies including Intel, but the Israeli-based chipmaker has become NVIDIA's largest acquisition ever. The acquisition will see NVIDIA bolster its position in the datacenter and server markets, which account for nearly 1/3 of its sales. Mellanox mostly makes chips that power high-speed ethernet and InfiniBand networks that are found in servers, primarily in datacenters in the cloud and storage worlds as well as super-fast supercomputers for AI and deep learning.

NVIDIA CEO and founder Jensen Huang said: "The emergence of AI and data science, as well as billions of simultaneous computer users, is fueling skyrocketing demand on the world's datacenters. Addressing this demand will require holistic architectures that connect vast numbers of fast computing nodes over intelligent networking fabrics to form a giant datacenter-scale compute engine".

Respawn has banned 355,000 cheaters from Apex Legends on PC

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Mar 11, 2019 8:29 PM CDT

There's never a server you jump into with Apex Legends and its empty, but if you've been playing the game a lot you'll have found yourself some cheaters. In the last few days Respawn Entertainment said it had banned over 355,000 cheaters on the PC alone.

Respawn has banned 355,000 cheaters from Apex Legends on PC

Apex Legends is powered by the Easy-Anti-Cheat tools on the PC, with Respawn fighting an "ongoing war" with cheaters. The developer explained on Reddit recently: "We'll need to continue to adapt to and be very vigilant about fighting [cheaters]. We take cheating very seriously and care deeply about the health of Apex Legends for all players".

Respawn said it is working on the anti-cheat side of Apex Legends, with the game being so popular the developer wants to keep its cards close to its chest. Respawn added: "We're going to have to be pretty secretive about our plans. Cheaters are crafty and we don't want them to see us coming". Don't worry, as the developer has been talking with anti-cheat experts both inside of EA and outside of it, deciding to expand its own internal anti-cheat team that will scour the game for hackers and exploits while working on a new tool for Apex Legends that'll let you report bad behavior and cheaters.

Podracer fan game reminds us when Star Wars games were fun

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 11, 2019 5:40 PM CDT

Remember back when Star Wars games were fun, varied, and whimsical and not artificially-elongated microtransaction-ridden service games? Remember that old-school podracing game you spent hours on, perfecting tight corners on Tattooine's dusty canyons? One talented fan brings back Anakin's podracing days of yore with a nifty UE4 project.

Podracer fan game reminds us when Star Wars games were fun

Programmer RobJin has recreated the N64 classic Star Wars Episode I: Racer in Unreal Engine 4, upgrading the 20-year old game with high-end modern graphics and smooth animations. The dev worked on a demo of the game for about 10 months to learn the ins and outs of UE4, and based on the finished result, I'd say this is as good as any resume. Not only does the unofficial remaster demo breathe new life into a childhood icon, it reminds players what Star Wars games were like back in the day; small, interactive slices of the universe that didn't require online play, season passes, or tons of extra purchases. They were built around fun and innovation, even if they were always hard to make.

You can actually download the demo right now for free, but be sure to grab it fast. Disney probably won't play very nice and force a takedown of the videos and download links.

Anthem boycott will hit EA, BioWare where it hurts

Anthem players are staging a week-long boycott to hit EA and BioWare where it hurts: engagement.

Anthem boycott will hit EA, BioWare where it hurts

Anthem is a mess, and has been a mess since launch. We've held off on our review to see if it could change with updates. But as the game gets improved, it also takes massive steps backward--every update breaks something else. Anthem players are pissed. The subreddit is filled with frustrating posts about Anthem's latest patch, which removed lower-end gear from drops for level 30s, but didn't make it easier to earn or craft Masterworks or Legendaries. The playerbase feels like they're wasting their time and are fed up, and to get results they're planning a big lights-out protest to send a clear message to BioWare and EA.

To get developers' attention and hit EA in its most vulnerable spot, Anthem players are prepared to go on strike and stop playing the game for up to five days. A recent post in the Anthem subreddit calls for a thread-wide boycott of Anthem from now until March 15, 2019. Everyone on all platforms are encouraged to stop playing and drop the player count to radical lows, which is the best way to threaten any live service game.
