TSMC on 3nm : 3x silicon density over 7nm, 51% less power, 32% faster

Anthony Garreffa | Science, Space, & Robotics | Aug 24, 2020 11:09 PM CDT

We are beginning to hear more about TSMC's next-gen 3nm process technology, with the company detailing it during its annual Technology Symposium.

TSMC on 3nm : 3x silicon density over 7nm, 51% less power, 32% faster

TSMC, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, has detailed its new 3nm (N3) process node. The company said it would go into risk production in 2021, and then into mass production in the second half of 2022. In between now and then, it will have 5nm (N5) which it also provided some details on.

The new 5nm node will be followed up by the 5nm+ (N5P) -- and somewhere in the middle of that we have the 4nm (N4) node -- both N5P and N4 will be enhanced versions of N5 -- which is already in high volume manufacturing.

Rockstar Games is probably knee deep in developing Grand Theft Auto 6, but now parent company Take-Two Interactive has just renewed the domain for the official GTA 6 website.

GTA 6 domain secured, GTA: Vice City Online seems to be on the way

We should begin to hear more about Grand Theft Auto 6 in 2021, but we've been hearing more and more lately with the last news on GTA 6 being that it could be a next-gen Vice City revival. Rockstar and Take-Two renewing the GTA 6 domain makes sense, and it is a normal move a company would do leading up into the announcement of the game.

It wasn't just the GTAVI.com that Take-Two renewed its domain for gtavicecityonline.com, reports GamesRadar -- making the recent rumors of GTA 6 being in Vice City make sense -- it looks like it's not GTA 6 in Vice City, but rather GTA: Vice City Online?

Corsair made over $1 billion in revenues in 2019

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 24, 2020 6:49 PM CDT

Corsair is about to go public with a big initial public offering (IPO) of its shares, and will soon be traded on a public exchange. Now its earnings for the last few years have been revealed.

Corsair made over $1 billion in revenues in 2019

New Form S-1 filings reveal Corsair's earnings performance before and after its Elgato acquisition, and the results are surprising. Up until now, Corsair's financial data has been private and its investors have been internal. But now that it's going public, Corsair is revealing its earnings to attract potential investors for its new IPO subscription.

According to the Form S-1 filing, Corsair made over $1 billion in net revenues in 2019, a year after it purchased Elgato Gaming for an undisclosed sum. The company made a net income loss of -$8 million in 2019, however, due to higher expenses and higher income taxes.

Star Wars boss: 'We need time to step back and absorb'

Derek Strickland | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Aug 24, 2020 5:33 PM CDT

After the recent trilogy and failure of movies like Solo, Lucasfilm is going through a period of deep introspection before it ramps up new film production.

Star Wars boss: 'We need time to step back and absorb'

Star Wars is taking a break for a bit so Disney can really go back to the franchise's roots. Lucasfilm is currently examining George Lucas' mythos more closely so it can make more meaningful original experiences, not unlike The Mandalorian. This slowed-down approach has led to more critical fanfare and reduced the chances of huge box office misses.

According to Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy says the company needs more time to digest the deep lore of Star Wars that's been built up over the last four decades. Only then can they start to comfortably push into their own trailblazing efforts and expand the universe.

EA being sued for 'predatory lootboxes,' lawsuit says FIFA is gambling

The new lawsuit, Ramirez vs Electronic Arts (5:20-cv-05672) makes a big case out of a simple premise: EA's Ultimate Team lootboxes are unregulated gambling.

The lawsuit, which has been filed by attorneys Tim Blood from Blood, Hurst & O'Reardon and Andrew J. Brown on behalf of California plaintiff Kevin Ramirez and over 100 unnamed people, aims to set new precedent for EA in a jury trial. The goal with the trial is to force EA to change its "predatory and unlawful practices" concerning lootboxes and regulate them as gambling, collect damages, and force EA to pay for attorney fees.

Modder makes a Game Boy out of a watermelon (yes really)

Modder makes a Game Boy out of a watermelon (yes really)

We've seen some crazy creations, like Shank's portable Wii made out of an Altoids tin. Now we have the Melon Boy, a bizarre and ridiculous creation that packs in an emulated Game Boy Advance into an actual watermelon. Well, a hollowed-out watermelon shell, of course. But a watermelon nonetheless.

Cedric's watermelon creation is absolutely hilarious and is something you'd dream up in the throes of boredom. It honestly looks like something out of Ren and Stimply. The world's most awkward handheld has a bunch of buttons on the front rind and is powered by a saran-wrapped Raspberry Pi on the inside.

Diablo's loot lottery RNG is like a slot machine, says David Brevik

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 24, 2020 1:41 PM CDT

Diablo and Diablo II have some of the most addictive loot-finding in any game ever made. This was by design, and fed the core gameplay loop from day one.

Diablo's loot lottery RNG is like a slot machine, says David Brevik

In a recent interview with Ars Technica, original Diablo designer David Brevik talked about the game's legendary RNG randomization and how it was designed to keep gamers playing. Diablo was always built from the ground up with two simple ideas: Instant action, and tons of loot. The loot idea was based around old PC games like Moria, but on a deeper and more robust level. Diablo set the bar for ARPG loot systems, which basically turned every single enemy into a walking slot machine, and Diablo II kicked things up a notch.

"For Diablo, there was a lot of technical things we had to overcome for things that were different than games at the time," Brevik said.

Today Unity Software, the company behind one of the most-used 3D engines in gaming and entertainment, filed an Form S-1 with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Form S-1's are filed when any private company wants to start publicly trading its shares on an open exchange. The form reveals tons of info about Unity's business, including revenue losses, risk factors, and the sizable market that Unity currently occupies.

The filing doesn't outline how many shares will be delivered at what price, however. Those terms will be announced in a press release. We do know that Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse are underwriting the IPO. The form indicates Unity will have a capitalization of $1.2 billion and 238,366,733 shares of common stock outstanding after the IPO.

Fall Guys coming to China's $36 billion mobile games market

Fall Guys, gaming's biggest new indie sensation, is coming to China's $36 billion mobile market. The game is being developed by Billibilli, but the official product page has been scrubbed, presumably due to an earlier-than-expected announcement. Neither Mediatonic, the developer of Fall Guys, nor publisher Devolver Digital have confirmed a mobile release just yet.

China represents a boon for a game like Fall Guys, which has exploded onto the market with 2 million sales in just 6 days. The game is buy-to-play on PC and PS4 alongside a free download for PS Plus subscribers, and features in-game microtransactions via a premium currency that unlocks new outfits.

New Switch coming early 2021 with higher-end display

Nintendo plans to release a new Switch model in early 2021, sources tell Taiwanese newspaper Economic Daily News.

New Switch coming early 2021 with higher-end display

Nintendo is ramping up internal production on a new Switch SKU, sources say, and Macronix will supply the internal flash memory. There's no concrete information on the device, but based on the reports, it seems like the new Switch isn't meant to be a next-gen contender with 4K support and higher-end specifications.

Instead it should be an upgrade over existing models with a better display and more enhanced interactive features, which indicates better built-in haptics, sensors, and possibly new-and-improved JoyCon controllers. There's been no real indications on a next-gen custom Tegra SoC solution being developed alongside NVIDIA to power a higher-end Switch+ or Switch Pro model, and Nintendo has said it cares more about fun than powerful hardware.

F1 2020 updated with NVIDIA DLSS: RTX 2060 SUPER now pushes 4K 60FPS

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 24, 2020 5:55 AM CDT

F1 2019 launched last year and received a patch soon after with NVIDIA DLSS, but F1 2020 launched not too long ago without it -- well, an update is now here and we have the GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER now capable of 4K 60FPS which is nothing short of amazing.

F1 2020 updated with NVIDIA DLSS: RTX 2060 SUPER now pushes 4K 60FPS

The results speak for themselves really, the GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER is capable of 39FPS average in F1 2020 before the new v1.08 patch -- but post-patch wtih DLSS enabled it super-accelerates thanks to the dedicated AI processors (Tensor Cores) inside of the Turing GPU -- right up to a huge 62FPS average.

This brings it above the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER with DLSS disabled, which scores 56FPS average -- but the RTX 2080 SUPER with DLSS enabled scoots right up to 85FPS. The flagship GeForce RTX 2080 Ti on the other hand, goes from 69FPS without DLSS enabled to an insane 103FPS with DLSS enabled.

Flight Simulator will generate $2.6 billion in PC hardware sales

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 23, 2020 9:54 PM CDT

Microsoft has officially released Flight Simulator, which has already blown most gamers away -- while pissing off others -- with the game requiring 16GB of VRAM minimum if you want to play it at the 8K resolution.

Flight Simulator will generate $2.6 billion in PC hardware sales

Flight Simulator is expected to drive $2.6 billion in hardware sales over the next 3 years according to John Peddie Research. Their research involved players being split into 3 categories: entry-level, mid-range, and high-end. The higher-end gamers will obviously spend much more than the other two, which will help drive those big numbers.

JPR explains in a statement: "Jon Peddie Research (JPR), the global leader in tracking the hardware spend of gamers, has analyzed the sales impact of the release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. This includes PC builds, processor upgrades, display upgrades, flight sticks and throttles, flight system control units, rudder pedals, simulation pit components such as seats and frames, and VR sales".

Flight Simulator at 8K requires 16GB of VRAM, GeForce RTX 3090 needed

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 23, 2020 7:31 PM CDT

You've probably seen some benchmarks of Flight Simulator flying around, with our take on Microsoft's ambitious new game looking at 8K performance -- a next-gen game, with a next-gen resolution.

Flight Simulator at 8K requires 16GB of VRAM, GeForce RTX 3090 needed

Flight Simulator at 8K was pushing my test bed to the absolute limits, where the game is using 16GB of VRAM -- minimum -- at 8K. Yeah, 16GB of framebuffer is being filled which annihilates the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080 SUPER, Radeon RX 5700 XT, and everything else pretty much.

The only graphics cards left standing is the NVIDIA TITAN RTX -- a card that costs $2499, and the AMD Radeon VII -- only because it has 16GB of VRAM and I would not recommend buying it right now. Cranking up the anti-aliasing (AA) however, began driving VRAM consumption up even more.

Why Halo: Infinite shouldn't be an Xbox Series X exclusive

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 23, 2020 4:20 PM CDT

Halo: Infinite has been delayed to 2021, and fans are calling for the Xbox One version to be cancelled entirely. But 343 shouldn't do this, and Microsoft shouldn't let them. Here's why.

Why Halo: Infinite shouldn't be an Xbox Series X exclusive

Like all developers making any game, 343i is having a tough time making Halo: Infinite. Not only are they trying to make a game, which is hard, they're trying to make a game and a new engine at the same time, which is nearly impossible in the best of times. Add on the complexities of COVID-19 work-from-home measures and having to make the game compatible on as many as five different Xbox consoles, and we have a recipe for trouble.

Despite these challenges I personally think it's important the game still releases on current-gen Xbox systems. There's a number of reasons here, many of which are grounded around Microsoft's current business, its marketing, and its formal obligation to current-gen.

Microsoft warns Unreal Engine cutoff would lead to 'significant costs'

Microsoft warns Unreal Engine cutoff would lead to 'significant costs'

On August 31, Apple plans to remove Epic Games' license unless it agrees to specific terms, including adhering to Apple's 30% revenue cut and not offering competing storefronts. This would not only permanently remove Fortnite from iOS and Mac but also remove Unreal Engine support for both platforms, cutting out countless developers from Apple's lucrative billion-dollar mobile infrastructure.

Epic has already warned this would cause lots of harm to developers. Now Microsoft is chiming in, and has filed a statement in Epic's formal legal complaint against Apple.

NVIDIA's new 12-pin connector is SUPER small on GeForce RTX 30 series

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 23, 2020 10:20 AM CDT

We are getting our first photos of NVIDIA's shiny new 12-pin PCIe power connector -- first the official Seasonic 12-pin PCIe molex connector and now a new shot of the smaller cable itself, that will be exclusive to its next-gen GeForce RTX 30 series Founders Edition graphics cards.

NVIDIA's new 12-pin connector is SUPER small on GeForce RTX 30 series

The new photo is thanks to Andreas Schilling, who tweeted it out earlier today with a comparison against 2 x 8-pin PCIe power connectors. You can see that the new 12-pin PCIe power connector isn't just more convenient because it's a single power connector, its actually really freaking small, too.

You can see that it takes up about the same width as the traditional 8-pin PCIe power connector, and it looks thinner too. So we could be in for a thin cable going into the new GeForce RTX 30 series Founders Edition cards, but they'll definitely be consuming more power than the current GeForce RTX 20 series graphics cards.

NVIDIA's new GeForce RTX 3090 will require a huge 850W power supply

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 23, 2020 5:21 AM CDT

NVIDIA's new GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards will be unveiled on September 1, with the introduction (and requirement on RTX 30 series Founders Edition cards) of a new 12-pin PCIe power adapter.

NVIDIA's new GeForce RTX 3090 will require a huge 850W power supply

In a recent finding on Bilibili, the new 12-pin PCIe power connector was spotted -- this time, from Seasonic. But as you can see on the box, the adapter turns 2 x existing 8-pin PCIe power connectors into a single 12-pin PCIe power connector.

Seasonic is recommending that you have an 850W power supply or higher, to use this new 12-pin PCIe power connector. That's pretty crazy, as a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti only "requires" a 650W PSU.
