Bumblebee is that you? Hardware Extreme's black and yellow project

Chris Smith | Modding | Feb 26, 2015 10:03 PM CST

Making Wiz Khalifa proud, this black and yellow build spotted on the EK Water Blocks Facebook page is jam-packed with ASRock, Intel and EK Water Blocks components.

Finally a build that isn't featuring rigid tubing, this mod project has interestingly placed the Kingston HyperX SSD Na'Vi Edition directly onto the power supply, likely due to space constrictions.

Alongside providing yellow died liquid for aesthetics, even the RAM has been properly color coordinated alongside brilliantly sleeved cables. This fully water cooled system only features one video card this time, but it's still going to be enough for general duties.

Swedish professional CS:GO player Joel "emilio" Mako admits cheating

Chris Smith | Gaming | Feb 26, 2015 8:38 PM CST

Joel "emilio" Mako was slapped with a Valve Anti-Cheat ban (VAC ban) whilst playing in a match against rival team HellRaisers in an online tournament match, which saw his gaming team releasing him immediately.

VAC ban's generally come in waves, with multiple players being banned in one go and this action happening often weeks after their cheating experience took place - this helps create confusion as to exactly what cheat program the hackers have used as they are not told exactly what got them banned.

Mako claimed he was not guilty and in an interview with HLTV he stated that "I am leaving this in Valve's hands. I cannot prove my innocence, but I know they can."

EA talks Battlefield Hardline, says BF4 launch was 'less than stellar'

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Feb 26, 2015 7:31 PM CST

Battlefield Hardline isn't too far away now, so EA is getting down and dirty with getting the game out there, with Mike Gloseski from EA taking to the official Battlefield website to talk the game up.

Glosecki concentrated on the PC side of things, addressing the 'power of PCs', 'how stable will the game be on PC' and more. When talking about the power of PCs, Gloseski said that the PC "allows you to customize the experience to your liking" and that you can set specific graphical details in the game, compared to its console counterparts. He added: "You can adjust your field of view or run higher than 60 FPS if you choose. You can even play with a three monitor setup for an immersive experience. Lastly, you get to use a mouse and keyboard which gives you the best control setup for a first person shooter".

One of the better additions to this post was that he tackled a big question: "how stable will the game be on PC". Glosecki said: "I think we can all agree that Battlefield 4's stability at launch was less than stellar. In order to address stability for our game at launch, we've had the game up and running in the multiplayer environment for the last two years with both the development and quality assurance teams playing in daily matches". Another nice change is that the developer is "also making changes to Battlelog to include a new pop-up on how to activate the plugin in your browser since this was an issue for some of our players".

Kaspersky: 28% of mobile users don't have knowledge of malware attacks

Michael Hatamoto | Hacking, Security & Privacy | Feb 26, 2015 2:25 PM CST

Twenty-eight percent of consumers know nothing or very little about mobile malware, while another 26 percent said they are aware of cyber threats but aren't worried, according to the "Consumer Security Risk" survey from Kaspersky Lab.

In addition, 31 percent of Google Android smartphones and 41 percent of tablets aren't password-protected, while 58 percent of Android smartphones and 63 percent of tablets have some form of anti-virus software.

"It is not surprising that mobile users are facing online threats more often now: devices are capable of doing so much more, and many more people are using them, so of course they will attract fraudsters," said Victor Yablokov, head of mobile product line at Kaspersky Lab. "To avoid falling victim to scams, users are advised to protect their devices against cyber threats and be especially careful with any sensitive data store on them."

Official: Cyber doomsday less likely as continued low-level attacks

Michael Hatamoto | Hacking, Security & Privacy | Feb 26, 2015 12:40 PM CST

Even with the rising sophistication of cyberespionage campaigns, US critical infrastructure is less likely to suffer from a single major incident - and faces a higher risk of continued low-to-medium attacks.

"Rather than a 'cyber-Armageddon' scenario that debilitates the entire US infrastructure, we envision something different," said James Clapper, director of national intelligence, in a recent report. "We foresee an ongoing series of low-to-moderate level cyberattacks from a variety of sources over time, which will impose cumulative costs on US economic competitiveness and national security."

Clapper's statements were made as part of a report submitted to the Senate committee, with growing concern regarding cybersecurity.

FireEye: Breach detection time is dropping, averages 205 days

Michael Hatamoto | Hacking, Security & Privacy | Feb 26, 2015 10:20 AM CST

FireEye's Mandiant found that the average data breach was discovered in 205 days, dropping from 229 days (2013) and 243 days (2012). Enterprises were only able to self-detect 31 percent of breaches, with third-parties and the government helping identify cybersecurity incidents.

Companies are becoming more vigilant in detecting cybercrime-related activity, such as credit card companies noticing fraudulent behavior.

"Over the last several years, organizations like the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have gotten increasingly involved in notifying US businesses that they have been identified as being compromised," said Ryan Kazanciyan, technical director at Mandiant, in a statement to eWEEK. "The result of the FBI's efforts has led to increasing numbers of victim notifications."

Michael Hatamoto | Hacking, Security & Privacy | Feb 26, 2015 7:25 AM CST

Europol's European Cybercrime Center is actively dismantling the Ramnit botnet, which relies on up to 3 million malware-infected zombie PCs. Twenty-seven percent of Ramnit infections were identified in India, with Indonesia (18 percent), Vietnam, the United States, Bangladesh and the Philippines also impacted.

Europol didn't say if any arrests were made at this stage of the investigation, but offered this public statement:

"This successful operation shows the importance of international law enforcement working together with private industry in the fight against the global threat of cybercrime," said Wil van Gemert, Deputy Director of Operations at Europol. "We will continue our efforts in taking down botnets and disrupting the core infrastructures used by criminals to conduct a variety of cybercrimes."

EA Access members get access to Battlefield Hardline five days early

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Feb 26, 2015 1:45 AM CST

Battlefield Hardline has a launch date of March 17, but it will release five days earlier for EA Access members, with those gamers able to play the cops-and-robbers first-person shooter from EA and Visceral Games on my birthday, March 12. EA Access is an exclusive to the Xbox One, which means no early play for PC or PlayStation gamers.

The five-day trial will allow EA Access members to play the full version of Battlefield Hardline, but for only 10 hours in total. EA Access normally offers six hours of trial before the game goes live, so this is a nice four hour addition. The entire game will be accessible: all maps and modes in Battlefield Hardline's multiplayer component will be playable. As for the single player side of the game, only the first chapter of the story and the prologue will be made available.

Any and all progress will be carried over to the full game when it launches on March 17, which is a nice touch. EA Access customers can purchase Battlefield Hardline from the Xbox Games Store with a 10% discount, dropping its $59.99 price down to $53.99.

Rocksteady teases Batman: Arkham Knight 'Gotham is Mine' trailer

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Feb 26, 2015 12:41 AM CST

Rocksteady Games has unveiled the official Batman: Arkham Knight trailer, dubbed "Gotham is Mine". The trailer shows off what we can expect from the epic conclusion to the Rocksteady Batman: Arkham trilogy.

The developer says: "As Scarecrow unites the Rogues Gallery, including Two-Face, The Penguin, the Riddler, the Arkham Knight, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, they bring all-out war as they try to take down The Dark Knight, and claim Gotham City as their own". The trailer doesn't show off much actual gameplay, but it does provide a great tease of all the characters and environments we'll get to see, and explore.

Batman: Arkham Knight will be released on June 2, 2015.

PS4 exclusive 'Hunger' looks like nothing you've ever seen before

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Feb 25, 2015 11:31 PM CST

For fans of LittleBigPlanet on the PlayStation, you might be interested in taking a look at 'Hunger' from Tarsier. Tarsier was actually behind the PS Vita version of LittleBigPlanet, but their new game is shaping up to be something very special, exclusive to the PS4.

In Hunger you play a girl that is trapped in a beautiful labyrinth that is filled with monsters and all sorts of gorgeous environments with very realistic lighting, shadows and physics judging by the teaser video above. Tarsier is focusing on tactile controls, very unique camera perspectives, and characters with "soft, dark centers".

We should expect to see more of Hunger at GDC 2015, if not I'm sure we'll get more of a taste for the PS4 exclusive at E3 2015 in June.

Oculus announces Mobile VR Jam 2015 with $1 million in prizes

Anthony Garreffa | Extended Reality (XR) | Feb 25, 2015 10:39 PM CST

Oculus has just announced the new Mobile VR Jam 2015 event, where the Facebook-owned VR giant wants to see the best new games, apps, and experiences for the Gear VR Innovator Edition.

Strangely, you might have noticed this isn't for its own VR headset, the Rift. This is a mobile event, so the Oculus-powered Gear VR headset is at the center of this event. Oculus is putting up a huge $1 million prize pool that will be split in two: one for VR games, and the other for VR experiences and apps. Oculus says: "The Mobile VR Jam is an opportunity to build groundbreaking new experiences in collaboration with other passionate VR pioneers, and win cash prizes for innovative uses of VR-specific interactions and pushing the medium forward".

The Mobile VR Jam 2015 takes place between April 13 and May 11 with the winners announced on June 4. Interesting timing, as it is just ahead of E3 2015, where I expect we can see some very big things for the world of VR, that is, after GDC 2015 comes and goes which is going to be big for VR as it is.

Pebble raises over $5m in less than 24 hours for its new smartwatch

Anthony Garreffa | Wearable Computing & Fashion | Feb 25, 2015 8:34 PM CST

We knew a new Pebble smartwatch was coming, but what we didn't know is that it would appear on Kickstarter and create black hole for consumers money to be sucked into.

Pebble had a $500,000 funding goal for its new smartwatch, reaching this goal in 17 minutes. Yes, seventeen minutes. Would be customers of the new smartwatch pledged over $5 million in less than 24 hours, making the new Pebble Time smartwatch one of the most funded projects on Kickstarter, ever.

The new Pebble Time smartwatch features a new "timeline interface" and a new color e-paper display with a built-in microphone that you can use to response to notifications. There's up to 7 days of battery life, and its water resistant, too. Apple to pay $533 million due to iTunes patent infringements

Chris Smith | Business, Financial & Legal | Feb 25, 2015 7:21 PM CST

Apple has just been ordered to pay $532.9 million by the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas due to their iTunes service infringing on three different patents owned by Smartflash.

This Texas-based company holds patents "relating to digital rights management, data storage and managing access through payment systems," as reported by Gizmodo. Claiming that they were used without permission, Smartflash first took Apple to court in May 2013 claiming that the tech giant was infringing on their patents related to Apple's song, video and game download services.

Apple claimed that these patents are too basic and general to be legally enforced, however US District Judge Rodney Gilstrap and the jury disagree. Smartflash started the claim by asking for $582 million in damages, however the final figure has molded to a slightly-smaller $532.9 million total.
