Motorola's new Moto Z DROID smartphone is a new age of smartphones

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Jun 12, 2016 7:58 AM CDT

For the last few years, smartphones haven't really changed - Samsung's Galaxy range of smartphones are sometimes improved successors, while others aren't as well received. Even the great Apple is beginning to hit the end of its dominance, with a bump in sales of the iPhone. Well, Motorola is here with something very different with its Moto Z family of smartphones.

Motorola's new Moto Z DROID smartphone is a new age of smartphones

LG tried the module world with the G5 smartphone, and it was one of the most interesting phones of recent years thanks to its upgradeable components - with the wider angle lens camera attachment was a massive surprise. Motorola now has its own MotoMods, which are future-proof, snap-on extensions that add, or improve the abilities of your Moto Z smartphone.

The most out-there MotoMod is the Insta-Share Projector, which blasts a huge 70-inch screen to your wall from its projector. The resolution is lackluster, but this is a first-gen product - so we have 854x480, or 480p - and while its not the best, it will continue to get better in the future with more R&D put into the product.

The Division's player count has dropped by a gigantic 93% since launch

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jun 12, 2016 6:55 AM CDT

E3 2016 - Ubisoft launched The Division with a huge marketing campaign, and after a few delays and issues with the launch, it was a mostly positive deal for the company with the game making $330 million in its first 5 days of release. Well, The Division's player count has dropped by a huge 93%, with all but 7% of its player base left - Ubisoft really is in the Dark Zone with The Division and its longevity.

According to Githyp, The Division's player count has dropped dramatically on Steam since it launched, with its peak of 2.1 million players. Right now, it's sitting at around 143,000 players, with that being a drop of 93%. It was only 48 hours ago that Ubisoft enabled The Division's "Clear Sky Challenge" mode, and then before that we had the release of Clear Sky.

There are various issues with hacking and exploits, but with only a few hundred thousand people playing - mixed with the reality of 93% of the player base all but abandoning The Division, is the game on life support, and what's Ubisoft's plan for E3 2016?

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jun 12, 2016 6:37 AM CDT

E3 2016 - Crackdown 3 is becoming more of a reality with a new teaser site up and running, launching with some cryptic messaging. There are various messages that will be unlocked throughout the next month, with releases of 6/10, 6/17, 6/24, 6/30 and finally, the mission will be 'completed' on 7/7.

E3 is next week, so we should expect some form of a reveal of Crackdown 3 at the show. We can also see that $2/$10 is applied toward the agency pension, but who the hell knows what that means. The teaser site was found by a Crackdown forum member, and with Microsoft's E3 2016 press conference taking place on Monday morning, we should expect to find out more about Crackdown 3 in the next couple of days.

Mafia 3 'The Criminal Ecology' trailer teases criminal underworld

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jun 12, 2016 6:15 AM CDT

E3 2016 - The E3 2016 rush is beginning, with our first tease of Battlefield 1, we now know when the second premium DLC for Star Wars: Battlefront will launch, and now we've got a new trailer to Mafia 3.

The latest trailer for Mafia 3 is dubbed 'The Criminal Ecology' with the developers teasing the research they put into the criminal underworld, rackets and missions, and how it all blends together in the game. The mobster sandbox game is shaping up well, with a GTA-like feel, but in a mobster universe. Mafia 3 producer Denby Grace notes that the extra missions are a reward for you continuing through various parts of the game, and not a way of pushing the plot forward.

Mafia 3's design director Matthias Worch talked about the similarities between the game, and real life, saying: "We've put a lot of work into actually modelling the way the mafia operates and how it kind of seeps into the foundations of the city. There are bosses who are running different parts of the city and they all have specialties, they have these big front businesses that they're using to launder money for whatever illicit things that they need to do".

Quake reboot incoming from id Software, could be teased at E3

After the huge success of Doom's modern reboot, a fully-fledged Quake reboot might be happening from id Software. Nerdleaks reports that the studio is laying preparations for a big tease at Bethesda's E3 2016 showcase tonight. I can see it now, smashing gloriously macabre machine-hell monstrosities with a huge arsenal of chaotic weapons in glorious ultra-fast 1080p 60FPS.

This isn't the first time the Quake reboot has been on our radar. id Software had 12 major job openings at its studios, obviously hinting something big was going down. The job listings also outright mentioned Quake by name: "id Software is looking for a Senior Physics & Simulation Programmer to work as part of a development team on legendary id game properties like DOOM and QUAKE," reads one of the job openings. At the time of publication there are still a dozen job openings at id's Texas branch.

A quick 30-second trailer for Dishonored 2 has been leaked, showing off some new never-before-seen tidbits about the upcoming sequel. The TV spot is told through the perspective of Empress Emily Kaldwin, and gives a clear look at the supernatural Outsider and other in-game mechanics.

We get a close glimpse at some of the powers--including what looks like a new shadow beast that can be used to scout out enemy locations--and the dual-wielding sword-and-gun combat style. The new clockwork automatons, who will play major antagonists throughout the game, were also displayed in a brief fighting sequence.

Star Wars: Battlefront's new 'Bespin' DLC will launch on June 21

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jun 12, 2016 4:27 AM CDT

E3 2016 - EA has announced that the second premium DLC release for Star Wars: Battlefront will drop on June 21, with Bespin to be released to Battlefront season pass holders on June 21, but it'll go on sale two weeks later to the rest of the world.

Bespin sees Battlefront gamers playing in and around Cloud City, which is an enchanting tibanna gas mining operation from The Empire Strikes Back, led by Lando Calrissian. The city's baron-administrator will also join the game, as a playable hero. This is a big deal, as it's his first non-Lego outing in a video game since the release of Star Wars: Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast.

The playable bad guy will be Dengar, who is a bounty hunter and hobo, while Cloud City's iconic Twin Pod Cloud Car will be added to the vehicle fleet. Bespin will feature new weapons, with the X-8 Night Sniper, and the EE-4 blaster, as well as the infamous carbon freezing chamber. EA teases there will be new game modes, star cards, blasters and maps that will release alongside Bespin, and they should be part of the monthly update to all Star Wars: Battlefront players.

E3 2016 - Although we've already posted up a handy E3 2016 timetable, we want to make sure everyone has all the livestream links and pertinent details for this year's huge Electronics Entertainment Expo.

Definitive #E32016 guide: all the games, livestreams, and predictions

A quick reminder: as you scan the list, you'll notice some major studios like Capcom and 2K Games/Rockstar Games are missing. Rockstar is expected to drop some huge reveals with Red Dead Redemption 2 and possibly GTA VI at E3, but we've not heard a peep from them about E3. So expect to see Red Dead Redemption 2 revealed on Sony or Microsoft's press conference--ditto for Capcom's Dead Rising 4, Resident Evil 7, and hopefully (but probably not) Devil May Cry 5. Click here for a list of all confirmed studios and companies exhibiting at E3 2016.

We'll also be pushing out news posts embedded with the E3 conference livestreams so you don't miss a single minute of the action.

Try PlayStation VR during E3 week at select U.S. Best Buy locations

Jason Evangelho | Extended Reality (XR) | Jun 12, 2016 12:55 AM CDT

Best Buy clearly wants in on more of that VR demo action, and curious consumers ultimately win. The retailer is already demoing the Oculus Rift, and now for a limited time they're adding the PlayStation VR to their list of playable virtual reality toys, but only for a limited time.

Best Buy will have kiosks with PlayStation VR systems set up for you to try on June 17th (from 3pm to 7pm) and June 18th (from 12pm to 4pm), and they'll also have staff on hand to answer all your questions. Unfortunately it's far from being visible at every Best Buy store -- we count about 21 scattered across North America:

If you're one of the lucky people close to any of these locations, call your local Best Buy to confirm, and go try some VR! We think that although the PSVR isn't as powerful as desktop-class headsets like the Vive, that the PlayStation option is easily the most comfortable HMD, and Sony is building an impressive library of launch titles.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew is a 4-player cooperative Star Trek experience

Anthony Garreffa | Extended Reality (XR) | Jun 11, 2016 10:38 PM CDT

E3 2016 - If there was a VR game that would entice the Trekkies to come over from the Star Trek universe and step into a virtual one, it would be the just-teased Star Trek: Bridge Crew from Red Storm Entertainment and Ubisoft.

The company secured Star Trek actors Jeri Ryan, Levar Burton and Karl Urban to don Oculus Rift headsets and step onto the starship on Star Trek: Bridge Crew. Ubisoft will be detailing the game on Monday morning at E3 2016, which is due out later this fall for the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and even the PlayStation VR.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew will see four players take on the roles of the captain, tactical officer, engineer and helm officer. Once the crew positions have been assigned to their stations, they will need to work together to complete missions that are both story-focused, and randomly generated. The four players get to decide how to tackle combat and exploration, where they can choose to be stealthy, or action-heavy. Jeri Ryan detailed her experience, saying: "This wasn't anything like you see on the show," said Ryan, a cast member on "Voyager" for four seasons. "When we were shooting it, the bridge set was all plywood and plastic. When you're looking at the ship's monitors, they were either green screens or just big openings in the walls. This was incredible. It's what it would be like if it were real".

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided's new bullshot photos look great, but eh?

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jun 11, 2016 9:49 PM CDT

E3 2016 - Can you believe we're only a little over two months from the release of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided? Well, in order to kick off the huge marketing campaign headed into E3 2016, Eidos Montreal have released some new screenshots of the game.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided's new bullshot photos look great, but eh?

The new screenshots look insanely good, but they definitely have a very specific, and image enhancing sharpening filter applied - which we most likely won't experience when Deus Ex: Mankind Divided launches on August 23. The bullshots released will sell plenty of copies, but we all know the Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game won't look anywhere close to what we see here, and neither will the higher-end PC version of the game. Sigh.

Game devs say its easier dealing with consoles than dealing with PCs

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jun 11, 2016 9:07 PM CDT

E3 2016 - We all know that there is a new PlayStation and a new Xbox on the way, but how do game developers feel about having to make their games for yet another console? Well, according to an interview with the developers of Dead Effect 2, it's "a lot easier than attempting to provide enough settings for a wild variety of PCs in the world".

The full quote from BadFly Interactive is even more interesting, where they said: "Every developer likes to get his product on as many platforms as reasonably possible, with the best possible quality. The enhanced console versions might provide enough power to support the 4K resolution and that would be definitely great. If all we had to do was to create two performance profiles, for standard and enhanced console, we're definitely interested. It would be still a lot easier than attempting to provide enough settings for a wild variety of PCs in the world".

WCCFTech also asked them if the target framerate for Dead Effect 2 on the Xbox One and PS4 would be at 60FPS, which was confirmed, with the PS4 version of the game being equal to the PC on high quality settings, while the Xbox One version will be akin to medium settings. BadFly Interactive added: "The versions we're right now tuning and testing are graphically comparable with PC high quality on PS4 and medium for Xbox One, but we're still working and looking for a ways to improve the quality. We want to keep the game at stable 60FPS on both platforms. We were considering the idea of 30fps lock while using a better quality graphics, but we've decided that smooth action play is more important, even if the visuals will have to suffer a bit".

The new Injustice 2 gameplay footage is jam-packed with hero-on-villain chaos, showing us some of the crazy ultimate super attacks from new characters like Atrocitus, Gorilla Grodd, Supergirl and even Black Manta. As in the first game, the sequel brawler blends cinematic-style animation sequences to showcase each character's defining moveset, and we get a good look at a bunch of different punishing ultimate moves from new and old DC heroes as well as the new dynamic armor sets.

"There was always characters we wanted to see. Atrocitus was a big one, Supergirl was huge. A lot of it was characters we didnt put in the first game, so we're excited to put them in this time around," Netherealm's Ed Boon said at the event. Ed didn't reveal anything new just yet, but promised "big things" at E3, saying that Injustice 2 will have tons of surprises for gamers. "It is everything you're going to expect in an Injustice sequel, tons of new characters and a lot of surprises you didn't expect."

It'll take more than a stunning trailer to sell me Gran Turismo Sport

Jason Evangelho | Gaming | Jun 11, 2016 1:56 PM CDT

E3 2016 - One of the best pre-E3 trailers I've seen so far is Polyphony Digital's second one for the PlayStation exclusive Gran Turismo Sport. It clocks in at four minutes and twenty-two seconds, the detail of each car is breathtaking, and the energy of the trailer itself is amped way up. But it's going to take more than a beautifully produced trailer to sell me on the final product which releases this November.

I have no doubt that Polyphony Digital has risen up to the challenge issued by Turn 10 and Forza Motorsport 6 (and for that matter, Project Cars). The graphical bar seems to be set ridiculously high now, especially judging by the detail present in each car during replay footage, and the utterly gorgeous photos taken in "Scapes," Gran Turismo Sport's new Photo Mode.

This new GT Sport trailer exudes emotion, it draws out our adrenalin with some top notch live commentary, it tugs on our heart strings by showing a community of racers bonding over one thing: The Real Driving Simulator. In short, this trailer has SOUL. Unfortunately, soul is something the past 2 Gran Turismo games have lacked.

An open letter to Oculus: 6 things you must do to save the Rift

Jason Evangelho | Extended Reality (XR) | Jun 11, 2016 11:18 AM CDT

Dear Brendan and the rest of the talented leadership at Oculus: You are the reason I love virtual reality. The Rift is the reason I now get paid to write about virtual reality for this very website. I bought an Oculus Rift DK2 after my mind was substantially blown by your product at CES 2014. I'm not covering Rift games and software with hardware I received for free from a PR contact; I rushed to your website and pre-ordered the consumer version in January like everyone else.

Please believe me when I say I'm a devoted fan. The nature of my profession also makes me one of your harshest critics. Let's not mince words: my career hinges on the proliferation and acceptance of virtual reality, a wondrous, world-altering computing platform you were once the proud flag-bearer for. Oculus understandably has a massive influence on the mass adoption of virtual reality, so your continued success is crucial to me. More importantly, I want your product and your business to flourish because I want to experience things that game developers haven't even dreamed up yet. Things that the visionaries of tomorrow will create, given the right platform and a large enough audience. You can call that selfish. You'd be 100% right.

But right now it's time for some tough love because so many things have changed over the last 3 months, and speaking on behalf of your fans, your critics, and your developers, it's time to usher in some dramatic change.

Halo Wars 2 open beta kicks off this Monday, new screenshots leaked

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jun 11, 2016 6:24 AM CDT

E3 2016 - Halo Wars 2 is getting a substantial open beta test during E3, and we've dug up more leaked details and screenshots on the upcoming RTS.

Halo Wars 2 open beta kicks off this Monday, new screenshots leaked

The Halo Wars 2 beta test will last for a full week from Monday, June 13 to Monday, June 20, according to leaked Xbox Store listings. Xbox LIVE Gold will be required to play the beta, which will feature 4-6 player online multiplayer action. The listing didn't say anything about Windows 10 PCs being included in the beta, but remember Halo Wars 2 is coming to both Xbox and PC, so it's possible.

A huge batch of screenshots (scroll down for more) for the tactical warfare sequel were dumped on Reddit, revealing a ton of familiar vehicles and squads and a few new ones. Interestingly enough, the screenshots didn't show off any of the crazy-looking Brute forces that are depicted in Halo Wars 2's leaked key art.
