At first Blizzard wrote off the Nintendo Switch, but with Diablo III the studio became a believer. And now the Overwatch team has fully embraced the platform thanks to its surprising versatility.

Blizzard explains reluctance in bringing Overwatch to Switch

Overwatch is coming to Switch as a digital-only game. With over 36 million units sold, the Switch is hard to ignore, and remains a lucrative re-release and remaster platform. Although that wasn't always the case, and some devs like Blizzard shrugged the system off for a while. But Blizzard's decision isn't all about the Switch's install base--the platform has some distinct advantages, like transforming to and from a console to a handheld.

Now Blizzard's Overwatch team discusses why they've changed their minds on the Switch. For one, they can monetize players on-the-go thanks to the Switch's portability. And two, they can utilize extras like intuitive gyroscopic motion controls for immersive aiming when playing portably or docked at home.

Jak Connor | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Oct 15, 2019 7:07 AM CDT

Netflix's upcoming Witcher TV series has got both gamers and fans of the book series waiting on the edge of their seats. While both gamers and the book readers are prepared, no one was more prepared then Henry Cavill for the role of Geralt of Rivia.

Henry Cavill prepared for The Witcher TV series by playing the games

According to a recent interview with French magazine Premiere, Cavill said that even before the casting for the show begun, he was living and breathing The Witcher universe as truly means something to him. The Reddit translation from the interview reads as follows; "I discovered the games, then I discovered the books, and the universe of The Witcher instantly meant something to me. I often thought about playing Geralt. When the opportunity appeared, I didn't let the chance pass me. I asked my agent to meet Lauren as soon as possible... I didn't even have the need to prepare myself for the role."

You might wonder why Cavill was already prepared for the role, this was because throughout his completion of The Witcher games, he was able to spend a considerable amount of time fleshing out the character Geralt. Cavill says he understands the role "Because I breathe, I live this universe every day. I already got numerous opportunities to think about this character while I was playing the games. My preparation was already made before the casting started." The Witcher TV show is expected to release later this year.

Martin Scorsese says Marvel Films aren't cinema 'It's something else'

Jak Connor | Gaming | Oct 15, 2019 6:00 AM CDT

Legendary movie director, Martin Scorsese recently gave his opinion on how massive comic book movies such as the Marvel Cinematic franchise has affected cinema. Lets just say Mr. Scorsese isn't thrilled about the idea.

Martin Scorsese says Marvel Films aren't cinema 'It's something else'

He spoke out at a press conference this past Sunday accompanied by Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, for the closing-night screening for his upcoming movie 'The Irishman'. The director compared today's theater expereince to that of an "amusement park" and called for cinemas to "step up and show films that are narrative films".

Scorsese went on to say that Marvel films are "not cinema" and that "We shouldn't be invaded by it. Theaters have become amusement parks. That is all fine and good but don't invade everything else in that sense. That is fine and good for those who enjoy that type of film and, by the way, knowing what goes into them now, I admire what they do. It's not my kind of thing, it simply is not. It's creating another kind of audience that thinks cinema is that."

Reddit posts can now be directly shared to Snapchat stories & friends

Jak Connor | Internet & Websites | Oct 15, 2019 5:12 AM CDT

Snapchat want users to be able to easily share Reddit content with their user-base, as their new update to the sharing options on Reddit will allow users to distribute content to their snap-followers with a couple of button presses.

Reddit posts can now be directly shared to Snapchat stories & friends

For this new feature to work, users must have both the Snapchat and Reddit app installed on their iOS or Android device. Reddit users will then be able to select the "share" button on a Reddit post and then find Snapchat. If Snapchat is selected, Snapchat's camera will be pulled up and here is where users will be able to decide whether or not to share the Reddit story with a select amount of users or add it to the Snapchat story.

According to Vaibhav Sahgal, Reddit's head of growth product, "Snapchat is the first platform partner with whom we're testing a content sharing integration, and we're excited to see how the feature will shape the sharing habits and experiences among our users." At the moment, the sharing option on Reddit is limited to 'safe-for-work' subedits and is only available on iOS. The feature should be rolled out to Android devices at a later date.

That reddish interstellar visitor isn't what we thought it would be

Astronomers that have been observing the comet that arrived in our solar system from deep space, discovered that the comet is much more ordinary than first expected.

That reddish interstellar visitor isn't what we thought it would be

Sometimes space discoveries aren't all celebrations, as sometimes what was expected to be found is a bit more ordinary than originally thought. This is one of those times, as amateur astronomer, Gennady Borisov found back in late August a comet from deep space which was then named 2I/Borisov. This comet was the second interstellar object ever found to enter our solar system, and as astronomers studied its qualities it has been found to be quite the ordinary comet.

A team led by Piotr Guzik at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland maned the telescopes at the Canary Islands and Hawaii to observe the visitor further. What they found is that the comet has a reddish color with a fuzzy tail extending from its 2-kilometre-wide nucleus. The team found that the comet is more normal than once thought, and is extremely similar to the comets that are currently floating around our sun. Astronomers will continue to study 21/Borisov as its trajectory is will closely approach the sun on the 8th of December. After that it will continue outwards to the edges of our solar system.

Bicycles, dinner tables & umbrellas could soon become pocket-sized

Jak Connor | Artificial Intelligence | Oct 15, 2019 2:08 AM CDT

Have you ever wondered if it would be possible for you to pick up your bicycle, fold it into itself and then place it in your pocket? Well, this new super-compressible material could do just that.

Bicycles, dinner tables & umbrellas could soon become pocket-sized

Researchers at TU Delft have used artificial intelligence to create a new supercompressible but strong material. According to Miguel Bessa, assistant professor in materials science and engineering at TU Delft, the idea originiated when he was at the California Institute of Technology in the corner of the Space Structures Lab. Bessa noticed that a satellite structure could open long solar sails from an extremely small form-factor.

This observation drove Bessa's inspiration to create a supercompressible material that could be compressed into a fraction of its volume, but still remain strong. "If this was possible, everyday objects such as bicycles, dinner tables and umbrellas could be folded into your pocket." Bessa and his team used artificial intelligence instead of the traditional trial-and-error process to explore new design possibilities with metamaterials. This reduced experimentation to the absolute minimum, and after some time Bessa fabricated two designs that converted once brittle polymers into lightweight, recoverable and super-compressible metamaterials.

Blizzard cancels Overwatch on Switch event in NYC -- thanks, China

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Oct 15, 2019 1:40 AM CDT

In a hugely surprising move (maximum sarcasm enabled), Blizzard has cancelled its Overwatch Switch launch party that was about to kick off at Nintendo in New York City. Overwatch launches on the Nintendo Switch later today, October 15.

Blizzard cancels Overwatch on Switch event in NYC -- thanks, China

Overwatch is about to launch on the Nintendo Switch, with its NYC-based launch event taking place at NintendoNYC on October 16 abruptly cancelled by Blizzard. Nintendo NYC explained in a tweet that the event had been "cancelled by Blizzard" and that it apologizes for "any inconvenience this may cause".

Blizzard has been in super-hot water over its treatment and silencing of professional Hearthstone player 'blitzchung' who voiced support for the protests going on in Hong Kong. Activision-Blizzard banned him from the game, and took his prize money -- then started throwing out 1000-year bans to anyone talking about Hong Kong and China on its forums.

This 100,000 times thinner guitar string 'nano-string' plays by itself

Jak Connor | Science, Space, Health & Robotics | Oct 15, 2019 1:05 AM CDT

Scientists have managed to create a nano-electronic circuit that can vibrate and play guitar notes without any external force.

This 100,000 times thinner guitar string 'nano-string' plays by itself

The scientists from the Lancaster University and University of Oxford have used a tiny suspended wire that is positioned much like a guitar string to showcase their experiment that reveals how a simple nano-device can generate motion by itself. Researchers used a carbon nanotube, a wire with a diameter of about 3 nanometers or to put it into a musicians perspective - about 100,000 times thinner than a normal guitar string.

Researchers mounted the nanotube onto metal supports at each end and then cooled it down to 0.02 degrees. Researchers then passed an electric current through the wire and measured its change in electrical resistance. Much like a normal guitar string when its plucked, the nanotube wire vibrated when the electric current passed through it, what was the surprising part was when the researchers stopped forcing the voltage and the wire continued vibrate by itself.
