Micron's new SolidScale tech unlocks NVMe performance
Micron's new revolutionary SolidScale tech was unveiled and showcased at the 2017 Micron Summit in New York City's Freedom Tower, and TweakTown's own storage editor Jon Coulter attended the storage giant's big showcase.
Micron has revealed its new SolidScale architecture, a revolutionary platform that unlocks the full potential of NVMe SSDs.
The magic of SolidScale is that it takes the benefits of localized NVMe pools (high-speeds, large capacities) and spreads them out across an entire datacenter system.

AMD Radeon RX Vega specs leaked, a shy monster?
There was a new Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) update for Linux pushed out yesterday, with AMD sliding in some major Vega feature support into the open source OS.
We now know that AMD have some interesting things planned for Vega, including GPU sensors, partial resident textures, network visualization, non-contiguous VRAM mapping, and more. But it's the internal specs of Vega 10 that we're all here for, so without getting your excitement meter up too much - please, take some of this salt and throw it over your shoulder.
Vega 10 will supposedly rock 64 next-gen compute units, each with 64 GCN stream processors - with a total of 4096 next-gen GCN stream processors in 4 divisions, each with a single shader engine. Every 1024 stream processor shader engine has two Asynchronous Compute Units, one render back end and 4 texture blocks.

In Win launches Micro-ATX version of the 303 case - 301
In Win has announced its new 301 mini tower PC chassis. The company pointed out that the case is gaming and performance-orientated for smaller form factor builds.
The case follows the design elements of the recently launched 303 model, such as the toolless tempered glass side panel, use of 1.2mm SECC steel, hexagonal ventilation and two-tone front panel layout.
Its front panel I/O has two USB 3.0 Type-A, and 3.5mm stereo headphone and microphone jacks, which are backlit. The 301 has support for one 2.5/3.5-inch bay, plus two more 2.5-inch SSDs and four PCI expansion slots to match Micro-ATX motherboards. Mini-ITX motherboard mounting support is also included. Can HTC conquer the market and outshine Samsung's S8?
After last year's problems with the Galaxy Note7, Samsung launched their latest flagship, the Galaxy S8, at the end of March. The South Korean company reported huge interest in their device and the first reviews and customer's feedback seem positive.
Samsung invested a lot in marketing, and it paid off. Everyone is talking about the phone, while LG's G6 or Huawei's P10 remain in the shadow of S8.
IDC's report on smartphone shipments in the first three months of 2017 revealed that Samsung is still on top of the list with 79.2 units shipped, and that was before the Galaxy S8 hit markets.

Musk says we are 2 years away from fully autonomous cars
At the recent TED conference in Vancouver, Elon Musk gave us some interesting insights into the future of transportation. He gave us the first look at how The Boring Company's tunnels might work, but he also spoke about the future of Tesla's autonomous cars.
Tesla's autonomous driving features are ahead of production cars, and its Autopilot can be classified as somewhere between levels 2 and 3 under the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) five levels of vehicle automation. At this level, the car can act autonomously but requires the full attention of the driver, who must be prepared to take control at a moment's notice.
Elon Musk said that he believes that true level 5 autonomy is about 2 years away. He pointed out that the "full self-driving capability" option on the second generation Autopilot will enable level 5 autonomous driving, but that depends on software validation and regulations.

Hearthstone amasses 70 million strong playerbase
Blizzard has announced Hearthstone's online community has grown to 70 million players worldwide.

Half-Life co-writer Chet Faliszek leaves Valve
After 12 years of instrumental work on Half-Life, Steam, and Vive VR, Chet Faliszek says goodbye to Valve
Chat Faliszek is the latest of Valve's key talent to say goodbye to the gaming giant. In his 12-year tenure Faliszek helped shape some of Valve's most notorious work: he co-wrote Half-Life 2's episodic expansions, the beloved Portal games, and the grisly co-op shooters in the Left 4 Dead series. The famed writer also helped build Valve's Vive VR platform and served as a public intermediary for VR developers across the globe. But now Faliszek seeks new horizons outside of Valve's pipeline.
"[It was]Nothing exciting or drama filled," ex-Valve writer Chet Faliszek told Games Industry Biz. "I worked there 12 years, shipped a bunch of great games and some amazing hardware and wanted to change things up. There's no news on what's next etc, I will let you know when that happens."

Microsoft's $999 Surface Laptop: Kaby Lake i5, 4GB RAM
Microsoft today revealed its new lightweight Surface Laptop, a premium-priced notebook aimed at ousting Apple's Macbook.
Microsoft's new Surface Laptop features a stark disproportion of price versus specs that mirror Apple's hardware playback: the cheapest Surface Laptop costs $999, and comes with a measily 4GB of RAM (DDR3 or DDR4 or frequency not specified), a seventh-gen Intel Core i5 Kaby Lake CPU with Intel HD Graphics 620 eGPU, and a 128GB SSD. This indicates that the Surface Laptop is a "laptop" in name only: it's really a thinner, more optimized Surface tablet formed into a notebook's form factor, complete with a lightweight OS to match.
The Surface Laptop can be configured to higher specs including a Kaby Lake Core i7 and 8GB/16GB of RAM as well as 256GB or 512GB SSDs, but no pricing info was given on the upgraded models. The notebook features a 13.5-inch 2256 x 1504 (201ppi) PixelSense display with 10-point capacitive touch. Microsoft boasts the Surface Laptop's battery lasts up to 14.5 hours with the i5 8GB model, but only when watching video.

Intel reveals DC P4500, DC P4600 3D NAND SSDs
Today Intel is announcing two new SSDs for the Datacenter. Both are based on Intel's 384Gbit 3D TLC flash technology. Normally TLC Flash of any flavor indicates lower performance and low endurance, but not this time. Intel has architected a brand new 12-channel controller and new firmware to power the DC P4500 and DC P4600. The result? The DC P4500 and DC P4600 are the highest performing Intel NAND-flash SSDs to date.
The DC P4500 is designed for high performance, massively scalable mainstream storage. The DC P4500 is available in capacities of 1, 2, and 4TB and two form factors; U.2 2.5"x 15mm and HHHL AIC. The DC P4500 is rated for 0.7 DWPD (Drive Writes Per Day) and is warranted for 5-years.
Intel DC P4500 steady-state factory specifications:
