Tekken 7's boxing kangaroo nixed due to animal activists

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 27, 2017 11:59 AM CDT

Roger Jr., the hilarious (yet still pretty badass) boxing kangaroo found in the Tekken series, won't be making a return in Tekken 7.

Tekken 7's boxing kangaroo nixed due to animal activists

Tekken creator Katsuhiro Harada confirms that Roger Jr. has been cut from Tekken 7's roster due to animal rights activism and sensitivity. While activists didn't actively campaign against Tekken or Bandai Namco to remove the kangaroo, the decision to cut Roger Jr. was a preemptive one. The publisher just didn't want that kind of bad press for their hit new fighting game.

"There was a video of a man's dog being headlocked by a kangaroo, and he punched it in the face. It turned into a big problem. People were complaining about him punching a kangaroo. It seems that in the last few years there's a lot more animal activists - even though they probably wouldn't play our game they would still hear about that, about a kangaroo in our game being punched, and would complain about it," Harada said in a recent interview with VG247.

GeForce GT 1030 to cost $80, will compete against RX 550

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Apr 27, 2017 4:01 AM CDT

NVIDIA is reportedly preparing a new graphics card to compete with AMD's mid-range Radeon RX 550, in what will be the purported GeForce GT 1030, and it'll be aimed at the sub-$100 market.

GeForce GT 1030 to cost $80, will compete against RX 550

NVIDIA is already in the sub-$150 market with its GeForce GTX 1050 at $109, but AMD attacked the sub-$100 market with its RX 550 at $79. AMD's Radeon RX 550 has a Polaris 12 GPU, 512 stream processors, and either 2GB or 4GB of GDDR5 RAM. Not bad for $79, but the RX 560 is only $20 more at $99. Still, the RX 550 will appeal to those who don't have the additional $20, or don't want the PCIe power connector - think internet cafes, and budget PCs.

The purported GT 1030 will feature a GP108 GPU, with 512 stream processors, 32 TMUs, 16 ROPs, and 2GB/4GB of RAM on a 128-bit memory bus. NVIDIA won't require an additional PCIe power connector, as the TDP will be just 35W... while the RX 550 chews 50W.

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Apr 26, 2017 8:34 PM CDT

While the return of the 'Mad Max' franchise after 30 years in 'Fury Road' didn't set the world box office on fire, it successfully rejuvenated the series with one of the best films of the year and six Oscars. Now, it's creator George Miller has reaffirmed his desire to return to in the near future.

George Miller still planning two 'Mad Max' sequels

Speaking to the Independent, the Australian director confirmed that "If the planets align, there will be two other films" and that the fan-favourite Doof Warrior would return, despite seemingly dying at the end of 'Fury Road', saying "I know who his mother was. I know how it was that a man who is mute and blind survived the apocalypse. I know his story very well! If we get to make another movie, the Doof Warrior will be there! I'm hard-wired for the imaginative life. It's part of who I am. These characters and these worlds tend to swirl around in the back of your brain like imaginary friends. It's easy to go back to them."

The 72 year old director also re-confirmed his intention to produce a smaller film before delving back into the 'Mad Max' universe.

Call of Duty WWII creatively strips players of power

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 26, 2017 8:22 PM CDT

With Call of Duty: WWII, Sledgehammer Games aims to create an authentic and bloody adaptation of a nation-sundering war--and it'll do that by creatively stripping players of their near-invincible FPS might.

Call of Duty WWII creatively strips players of power

Today's shooters are all about empowerment at the sake of realism but Call of Duty WWII hopes to marry the two with a kind of visceral focus that emphasizes skill and teamwork.

One of the most creative ways the game achieves this is by not refilling your health bar after a short period of resting behind cover. The chaos of war should be simulated in such away to reflect the anything-can-happen sandbox nature of militant combat, forcing players to use their wits, adapting skills, and accuracy to survive. But it's not just about you: the 12 men that make up the 1st Infantry Division all have specific roles in combat such as medic or ammo-replenisher, meaning you have to work together with your team to survive.

Lana Jelic | Mobile Devices | Apr 26, 2017 6:16 PM CDT

Samsung and LG have long been known as the two leaders in both display technology and enabling unique bezels on their devices thanks to those displays. Samsung just launched the S8+ with a dual curved infinity HDR display while LG launched the G6 with a thin bezel and HDR.

Call of Duty: WWII screenshots are sparse

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 26, 2017 5:23 PM CDT

UPDATE: We've found a few more Call of Duty: WWII screenshots and embedded them into the article!

Call of Duty: WWII screenshots are sparse

Call of Duty: WWII's big reveal was accompanied by a rather weak showing of screenshots, and Activision is likely holding back for E3.

When publishers reveal big-name games like the next Call of Duty or Battlefront game, they typically drop a few screenshots to accompany the reveal footage and info-packed press releases. But Call of Duty: WWII was different--after scouting around, I managed to dig up only four official screenshots--none of which were found on Activision's press site.

Alien: Isolation 2 isn't happening after all

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 26, 2017 3:31 PM CDT

Despite rumors predicated on industry sources, it appears Creative Assembly isn't working on Alien: Isolation 2.

Alien: Isolation 2 isn't happening after all

Yesterday we reported on Official PlayStation Magazine's claims that Alien: Isolation 2 might be in development. Now key sources tell Eurogamer this rumor is false, and the studio's next game won't be set in the Alien universe.

"Eurogamer's own sources have told us this isn't the case. Although the Halo Wars 2 team has already started prototyping its next project, likely to be a couple of years away from completion, this won't be an Alien title," the publication reports.

Call of Duty WWII features Nazi Zombies story co-op mode

World at War's infamous Nazi zombies mode makes a triumphant return in Sledgehammer Games' new Call of Duty: WWII.

Activision and Sledgehammer Games promise that Call of Duty: WWII's campaign will be visceral, gritty, and exhibit the tight-knit bonds of the 1st Infantry Division during World War II, but what about multiplayer? What about the narrative-driven co-op mode? As it turns out, that new co-op mode is Sledgehammer's unique take on Nazi Zombies.

"The definitive World War II next generation experience also introduces Nazi Zombies, an all-new cooperative mode featuring a unique standalone storyline set during World War II that's full of unexpected, adrenaline-pumping action," Activision's latest press release reveals.

Call of Duty WWII releases November 3

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 26, 2017 12:41 PM CDT

Activision has revealed Call of Duty WWII with a brand new trailer and release date.

Call of Duty WWII releases November 3

As we reported a bit ago, Call of Duty WWII releases on November 3 on all platforms. Sledgehammer Games is taking Call of Duty WWII very seriously and has spent the last three years making the game. The devs are building assets, textures and models from scratch to ensure authenticity, and the lighting department is keeping things "dark and beautiful" to elicit a specific emotional response from players. The team has watched countless hours of real World War II footage to re-create legendary battles and ensure the combat is as historically accurate as possible.

"This game is the game you've been waiting to see," Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg said during the Call of Duty WWII livestream. "Call of Duty WWII brings the series back to its roots, back to the gritty, authentic visceral experience that Call of Duty was built on. It also strives to capture the intense bonds of brotherhood that came from common everyday people who rose above the most epic and horrible conflict in human history. And with Sledgehammer Games at the helm, we knew we had the right team to deliver the cinematic scale and the relentless attention to detail that this conflict deserves and demands."

Stardock: Switch doesn't really need third-party games

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 26, 2017 12:10 PM CDT

Despite the Wii U's colossal failures due to its lack of third-party games, Stardock CEO Brad Wardell thinks Nintendo's new Switch console-handheld hybrid will sell regardless of third-party support.

Stardock: Switch doesn't really need third-party games

Nintendo has made tremendous efforts to court third-party developers with the Switch. The company has spent untold millions making partnership deals with publishers and developers to ensure the Switch has a varied games lineup. But Stardock's Brad Wardell thinks that first-party games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are enough. The Switch arguably doesn't need the aid of third-party titles, Wardell affirms.

"Nintendo doesn't arguably need third party. You think about the Mario games, Zelda, I mean, there's plenty there. I mean, if it was a $1000 game system, maybe I'd care. But as it stands now, there is plenty to play with on the Switch, that's just fine," Stardock CEO Brad Wardell told Gamingbolt in a recent interview.

Project Scorpio 4K vs 1080p side by side comparison

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 26, 2017 8:40 AM CDT

With its new Project Scorpio console, Microsoft promises to deliver a premium 4K system that sits at the top end of the Xbox One hardware spectrum. Now for the first time we get to see actual visual results of Project Scorpio's graphical prowess.

Project Scorpio 4K vs 1080p side by side comparison

Microsoft recently invited key publications like Windows Central to a private event to show how Project Scorpio compares to Xbox One in terms of fidelity. As you might've guessed, the differences between native 4K and 1080p are quite substantial, but Project Scorpio isn't just a 4K machine: regular 1080p HDTV owners will benefit from the console's supersampling which takes a 4K image and downsamples it to fit a 1920 x 1080 display for better visuals.

Sadly, Microsoft didn't show actual games in its side-by-side showcase, instead opting for tech demos. Below we have the first side-by-side with Xbox One at 1080p on the left, and Project Scorpio in 4K resolution on the right.

PSN and Xbox LIVE hacker imprisoned for two years

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 26, 2017 7:14 AM CDT

Adam Mudd was just 15 when he created the Titanium Stresser, a particular DDoS malware that was purchased by thousands of hackers to wreak havoc on online services across the globe--including Microsoft's Xbox LIVE and Sony's PlayStation Network.

PSN and Xbox LIVE hacker imprisoned for two years

Adam Mudd has been jailed for two years after UK courts found him responsible for 1.7 million DDoS attacks across the globe and making direct profit from cybercrime. Mudd drove a lucrative business by peddling his Titainum Stresser DDoS malware to hackers, which was used to disrupt websites and services worldwide. Courts estimate that Mudd made $500 million in the last four years selling the malware, and personally carried out 594 DDoS attacks against 181 IP addresses between 2013 and 2015.

Michael Topolski, the judge overseeing the case, refused to budge on the two-year sentence and hopes it'll deter other hackers. "I'm entirely satisfied that you knew full well and understood completely this was not a game for fun. It was a serious money-making business and your software was doing exactly what you created it to do," the judge said to Mudd.

More 'Star Trek' movies not guaranteed, warns star

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Apr 26, 2017 12:57 AM CDT

Despite the upcomng return of the franchise to the small screen with the eagerly awaited series 'Discovery', last year's relative failure of the 'Star Trek' sequel 'Beyond' has put a dampner on future sequels, with star Zachary Quinto warning that more sequels "aren't guaranteed".

More 'Star Trek' movies not guaranteed, warns star

Speaking to the Today Show, the Spock actor conceded that while a script was being written for another sequel (said to feature the return of James T. Kirk's father George Kirk), whether it actually gets filmed is another question entirely. "I know that they are working on a script for another one and we'll see how that all plays out, but the nice thing about that experience is that the time in between those big tentpole films allows us to go off and cultivate a lot of different creative experiences for ourselves... I'm hopeful that we'll do another one, but there's no guarantee." Despite reasonably good reviews, 'Star Trek: Beyond' failed to set the box office alight, posting a disappointing $334 million box office worldwide, a big step down from the $467 million gross of 'Star Trek Into Darkness' three years earlier.

Quinto's statement echos similar comments made in the last few weeks by fellow star Chris Pine who confessed that he was "literally one of the last people to find out" when a new Trek film was happening, although he was quick to confirm that he will be "back as many times as they ask me."

Vivendi could push for an Ubisoft takeover this year

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Apr 25, 2017 10:42 PM CDT

We all know Ubisoft have been pumping out mostly unfinished 'AAA' games over the last few years, but now it seems that Vivendi will be pushing for a majority takeover sometime this year.

Vivendi could push for an Ubisoft takeover this year

It's not just a small rumor from some random person in the industry, this is Reuters reporting on Vivendi expanding into both Ubisoft, and Havas, an advertising group. Vivendi chairman Vincent Bollore has been under shareholder pressure over mixed performance and stock prices that have been sliding.

Vivendi pushing into Ubisoft would make for a massive shift, with Vivendi owning 25% of Ubisoft, with Reuters adding: "Vivendi is moving into the second phase, everything will take place this year". It's not a signed deal yet, as Vivendi could find the takeover of Ubisoft costing too much - so it might look at acquiring a gaming giant in China.
