New Walking Dead VR game immerses you in the zombie apocalypse

Derek Strickland | Extended Reality (XR) | Oct 3, 2019 5:23 PM CDT

The Walking Dead is getting adapted into a big new survival-horror VR game complete with exploration, brutal combat, and crafting.

New Walking Dead VR game immerses you in the zombie apocalypse

Today Skydance Interactive announced The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, a new VR game set in Robert Kirkman's terrifying zombie-infested world. Set for release in January 2020 on Oculus and Steam's VR platforms, Saints and Sinners sounds like an intuitive mix between Dying Light and Dead Island with a whole new layer of immersion and thrilling tension: gamers can grab zombies and decapitate them, slice and dice hordes of walkers, and interact with an explorable world.

The game will also have a surprising amount of reactivity and depth with a 15 hour+ campaign, showing Skydance is keen on reversing the downward trend with Walking Dead games. You'll get to wield all sorts of guns and shotguns (as well as bows) as you fight for survival in an undead-littered New Orleans, mowing down both humans and walkers alike. There's opportunities to help various NPCs littered throughout the game and every decision you make will not only shape the world, but it'll determine who you can team up with.

Blizzard: We are a PC developer first, but ports won't stop

Current Blizzard Entertainment president J. Allen Brack asserts PC comes first, but that won't stop console ports and mobile-specific releases.

Blizzard: We are a PC developer first, but ports won't stop

In a recent interview with GameSpot, Blizzard president J. Allen Brack says PC is the highest on the totem pole. "We are a PC developer first," Brack said, then quickly followed up by saying ports of its biggest games won't stop--the Overwatches and Diablos should continue being ported to consoles too.

"And then we look for other platforms that we think can support the types of gameplay experiences that resonate with the type of games and values that we want to put forth into the world. And the example of that is Diablo 3 on console."

SEGA's original hard-as-nails lightgun classics are getting remade for current-gen systems.

House of the Dead remakes confirmed, no platforms announced

It's official: The House of the Dead 1 & 2 are getting remakes, bringing that old-school arcade thrill to your living room. Developer Forever Entertainment today confirmed the news, but left out some important details like launch date or platform availability.

It's likely the House of the Dead remakes will skip Xbox One now that the Kinect is dead and there's no real official lightguns for the platform. Sony, on the other hand, has PS Move controllers and an official lightgun mold, not to mention a PlayStation Camera sensor for tracking. We could even see the House of the Dead remakes come to VR hardware like the Oculus Rift, Valve Index, or PlayStation VR.

New Death Stranding cinematic is all about high-tech delivery men

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 3, 2019 3:11 PM CDT

Death Stranding's latest trailer underlines its core mechanisms: becoming a high-tech delivery man.

New Death Stranding cinematic is all about high-tech delivery men

Hideo Kojima's new game Death Stranding is all about making connections. But it doesn't do this in a direct way. Instead you're connecting a fractured, ghost-haunted world by delivering important parcels and precious resources throughout the world, thereby binding societies together. You're basically a futuristic postman that accepts delivery jobs, and everything you do brings the world closer together.

A new Death Stranding trailer shows this point in action. As Sam Porter Bridges, players will collect, deliver, and share tons of packages in the game, all while being chased by strange otherworldly phantoms. The parcels can contain everything from first aid and food to ammo, weapons, and gear. It's kind of metaphorical to how delivery and shipping is basically the heart of any society; being able to transport, share, and sell goods and services is the backbone to our world.

Super Mario Odyssey can be played on PC with a rock-solid 60FPS

Jak Connor | Gaming | Oct 3, 2019 7:02 AM CDT

A team behind an open source Nintendo Switch emulator has announced that due to their recent updates they have managed to get Super Mario Odyssey to run at a stable 60FPS on the PC.

Super Mario Odyssey can be played on PC with a rock-solid 60FPS

The emulator is called Yuzu, and from the above video that has been released onto the BSoD Gaming YouTube Channel, we learn that this new update has introduced a brand new version of asynchronous GPU emulation. This the biggest update to come to the emulator since its release, and from the video we can definitely see Super Mario Odyssey running at stable 60FPS minimum.

Unfortunately this emulator isn't perfect though, at the moment Bayonetta 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are still unplayable. But what Yuzu can play is Pokemon: Let's Go, Pikachu!, Super Mario Maker 2 and ONE PIECE: Unlimited World Red Deluxe Edition all at 60FPS. It should also be noted that the player in the above video is running Super Mario Odyssey at 60FPS on an i7 8700k with an NVIDIA GTX 1080Ti.

Death Stranding's launch trailer is being edited by Hideo Kojima hands

Jak Connor | Gaming | Oct 3, 2019 6:05 AM CDT

The release of the highly anticipated Death Stranding isn't that far away, and while fans are shaking in their boots with excitement, the director has given them yet another reason to look forward the launch.

Death Stranding's launch trailer is being edited by Hideo Kojima hands

In a recent Tweet on Hideo Kojima's personal Twitter account, who is the director of Death Stranding, he says that he is currently editing the launch trailer for the title. Kojima also states that this will be the final trailer that will go online before the game launches, and that usually these trailers are "handled by outsourcing CGI studio" that comes with a "movie director".

But not this trailer. Nope. Kojima is doing this one all by himself, and even says that he is treating this trailer as if its apart of the games title. So this would mean the games launch trailer is a 'Hideo Kojima trailer' right? If so, I must say that is pretty damn awesome, and really does show much care has been put into Death Stranding on Kojima's behalf. Death Stranding will be releasing on November 8th.

Robyn Malcolm, who played Morwen in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers spoke to Stuff.nz about how she believes that its time that women are brought to the front of the big screen. Here is what she had to say, "Those old legends, those old mystical stories, they're so based within a patriarchal landscape. Why not look at the magic of a matrilineal world where the magical powerhouses are women?"

For those that don't know, Ian McKellen played the role of Gandalf in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy and did an impeccable job, earning numerous nominations for best supporting actor. Malcolm continued to express her beliefs that women should be able to assume the roles of initially male characters regardless of Tolkien's extremely detailed source material says. Malcolm said "We've had female Hamlets." "Why not?"

New superconductor discovery could change energy efficiency forever

Jak Connor | Energy | Oct 3, 2019 4:10 AM CDT

Researchers and scientists around the world have stumbled upon a brand new discovery that could change how energy efficient energy transportation is.

New superconductor discovery could change energy efficiency forever

The new paper which was puplished in the journal of Science Advances indicated that graphene, which is a material composed of a single layer of carbon atoms, is more of a superconductor of electricity than once speculated. The researchers from The Ohio State University have said they have found a "magic angle" that changes graphene from being a normal conductor of energy into a superconductor.

Before continuing, any metal is a normal 'conductor' of energy, but a 'superconductor' is metal that can conduct electricity without there being any resistance, meaning no loss of energy. Graphene was originally thought to be just a normal conductor, but the researchers added second layer of carbon atoms to the already present single layer. They also twisted these atoms to what they are calling the "magic angle", which is measured at 1 degree and 1.2 degrees.

PS4 cross-play is now open to all developers

PlayStation 4's cross-play functionality is now available to all developers, Wired reports.

PS4 cross-play is now open to all developers

After years of hesitation, Sony has finally embraced cross-play. Starting with bigger free-to-play games like Rocket League, PUBG, and Fortnite, Sony eventually opened PS4 cross-play to more games. The biggest is Modern Warfare, which launches this month with full cross-play functionality on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Now Sony is lifting the floodgates completely and making PS4 fully compatible with cross-play on other platforms. Now it's up to developers to make use of it.

The news comes from a recent Wired interview with Jim Ryan discussing the future of the PlayStation platform. PS4's cross-platform support is now active across its near-100 million strong install base. Not much was said about the PS5 other than Sony working hard not to rest on its laurels--the content was mostly about services like PlayStation Now and cross-play. Both have an important role for Sony's immediate and long-term future.

Destiny 2 is massively popular on Steam

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 2, 2019 6:14 PM CDT

Destiny 2 is currently the third most popular game on Steam right now, behind DOTA 2 and Counter-Strike Global Offensive.

Destiny 2 is massively popular on Steam

Bungie's migration to Steam is a huge success. Destiny 2's new free-to-play mode has attracted nearly 2% of current active Steam users, and has amassed a huge 226,651 peak players today. Right now it currently sits at over 119K players, beating out PUBG by over 70,000 users. We're not sure how many Destiny 2 players are on the free New Light mode or bought into Shadowkeep, but we're betting the F2P option is most popular.

Whether or not these numbers will stay this inflated remains to be seen. Gamers are much more willing to try something that's free and give it a go for a few days, but a portion of them could drop out and move on. Destiny 2 has the added bonus of cross-saves, which lets PS4 players jump in on PC to play with Steam friends and then jump right back to their main platform. This potent tool could lead to lots of retention and platform-switching over time.

Surface Duo is Microsoft's answer to handheld gaming

Surface Duo is Microsoft's answer to handheld gaming

Microsoft has always been woefully behind when it comes to handheld gaming. But all of that could change with today's Surface Duo announcement, a new Android-powered device with hinging dual-screens. Microsoft showed off various use cases for the Surface Duo at its recent event, and gaming in particular has tons of potential.

The Surface Duo is transformable, making it somewhat like the Nintendo Switch. It doesn't dock, but you can use it like a 3DS, like a full display, or a half-display, mirroring the Switch's Tabletop Mode and Handheld Mode. Users can either hook up an Xbox One controller wirelessly via Bluetooth and use the dual screens as a portable gaming display, or flip it and hold like a 3DS and use the bottom half as a touch-screen controller while the top is used as a display.

Intel's Cascade Lake-X: Huge price drops and some big improvements

Steven Bassiri | Processors | Oct 2, 2019 12:45 PM CDT

At about 2:45PM yesterday, Intel's price slashing was leaked. We were actually at the briefing when it happened, so we will clarify some of the new details with Intel's official slides. For starters, prices are being slashed by up to 50%, which is huge news. However, if you have had experience with Intel's top of the line CPUs over the past decade, their Extreme Edition flagships have always been priced around $1000. It's refreshing to see Intel react to market demand and bring the price down to more normal levels.

Intel's Cascade Lake-X: Huge price drops and some big improvements

The 10th Generation 14-nm i9-10980XE will be their flagship CPU with 18 cores, and all the new CPUs are Cascade Lake-X series. All the CPUs get considerable boosts to their maximum Turbo frequencies, with the 18, 14, and 12 core variants going up to 4.8GHz and the 10-core CPU going to 4.7GHz. When we inquired to the turbo tables Intel told us they would have to get back with us.

We did notice that Intel has dropped their 16-core variant, and we believe this was done due to low demand. Total platform PCI-E lanes have been increased to 72, which is due to the addition of four PCI-E lanes, so the CPUs all have 48 PCI-E lanes instead of 44.
