Respawn's new Medal of Honor VR shooter has online multiplayer

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 29, 2019 11:53 AM CDT

Medal of Honor is getting resurrected as a VR shooter, and it'll have an online multiplayer mode.

Respawn's new Medal of Honor VR shooter has online multiplayer

Respawn's new Oculus-exclusive VR project is actually a WWII-based Medal of Honor FPS, not Titanfall 3. The game is focusing strongly on immersion and interactivity with a historically-accurate singleplayer campaign, complete with multiple theaters of war across Europe. It's also quite funky and hilarious, too, letting gamers embrace the jank of VR by doing wacky things like catching grenades, climbing walls and shooting enemies, and other creative experimental combos.

EA's penchant for online engagement will drive its way into the new Medal of Honor VR game, too. We'll see a multiplayer mode tacked on, likely with some sort of monetization or maybe expansion content. From what we've seen of the gameplay, multiplayer actually sounds like tons of fun. There should be opportunities for crazy action across the board.

This four-hour Destiny lore recap video is the best thing ever

YouTuber My Name is Byf condenses years of lore into a four-hour video to prime gamers for Shadowkeep.

This four-hour Destiny lore recap video is the best thing ever

Bungie's lore mastery sets them apart in the industry. Whether it be Halo's wide heroic scope to Destiny's more macabre and bizarre sci-fi overtones, the studio is well-known for their universe-building. Destiny's lore in particular is extremely deep and rich, oozing with flavor at every turn and captivating players. There's a mystique to Bungie lore and matched with some of the best art design in gaming, this sense of mystery propels gamers forward even amidst turbulent grinds.

But Destiny's grown into a leviathan. It's a hydra that keeps sprouting heads. With every expansion it gets bigger and harder to understand. There's floating black pyramids, worm gods, archaic constructs powered by milk, terrifying hive monstrosities, and so much more that make the classic Light vs Dark story quite complex. How will new players ever understand what's going on?

SpaceX compares its Starship MK1 to the Millennium Falcon

Anthony Garreffa | Science, Space, & Robotics | Sep 29, 2019 4:36 AM CDT

Elon Musk must be sipping champagne by now, with SpaceX hitting a new milestone in its Starship and Super Heavy rockets with the first fully-assembled Starship MK1 shown off.

SpaceX compares its Starship MK1 to the Millennium Falcon

This is the Starship MK1 in all of its engineering glory, the first prototype that has been shown off by SpaceX as part of its continued foray into interplanetary transportation systems. Starship MK1 uses SpaceX's own Super Heavy rocket system that will see payloads delivered to both the Moon, and in future missions, to Mars.

Where the new Starship takes things to the next level is that it uses an in-space re-filling by propellant -- with the Starship docking with tanker Starship vessels to re-fuel before taking off for their larger destination -- Mars, and other planets in and around our solar system. The additional fuel is required for the large amount of supplies and passengers, of which we're talking supplies to build bases on other planets (like Mars) and up to 100 passengers.

Tesla could soon have 1 MILLION MILE battery in its cars

Anthony Garreffa | Electric Vehicles & Cars | Sep 29, 2019 3:57 AM CDT

As it stands, the Tesla EVs of today have power cells with lifespans somewhere between 300,000 and 500,000 miles -- but now we could be looking at upwards of 1 million miles thanks to new research.

Tesla could soon have 1 MILLION MILE battery in its cars

This is what Elon Musk and Jeff Dahn are talking about in a new paper in the Journey of The Electrochemical Society (JES) which teases we might be living in a world with Tesla EVs that have 1 million mile batteries.

Tesla's battery research arm is partnered with Dahn and his research team, with Dahn explaining: "Cells of this type should be able to power an electric vehicle for over one million miles and last at least two decades in grid energy storage".

Razer's new Seiren Emote streaming mic rocks RGB LED display

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 29, 2019 12:47 AM CDT

Razer has just upped the ante on the streaming microphone game, with the gaming giant revealing its new Seiren Emote -- a new streaming microphone that features an 8x8 pixel grid into the camera-facing side of the new microphone.

Razer's new Seiren Emote streaming mic rocks RGB LED display

What the new Razer Seiren Emote microphone does uniquely is that it uses the RGB LED display to show Emotes in real-time, based on what you (the streamer) is saying. This is why the display is camera-facing, so that it is picked up by the streamers camera and displayed to the audience. Because you know, if someone is angry you can't already tell -- you need an array of RGB LEDs displaying an animated Emoticon in order to know.

Sarcasm aside, the streaming world will love this -- and it's not like Razer is making some cheap knock off, the Seiren Emote will be a high quality gaming microphone for streamers. Better yet, you can tweak software to display emotes from chats, have it synced with your Philips Hue lighting, and more.

JoyCon drift solved by new 8bitdo controller

8Bitdo has made a funky Switch controller without any joysticks...and it looks surprisingly intuitive.

JoyCon drift solved by new 8bitdo controller

The adept controller-makers at 8bitdo have outdone themselves this time. Introducing the new compact Switch Lite pocket controller, a new peripheral that's as portable as Nintendo's new $199 handheld-only system. Not only does the controller slide right into your pocket for easy carrying, but it sports two d-pads to prevent the dreaded JoyCon drift (and it also won't snag when dropped in a pocket or a bag).

The controllers look pretty cheap-but-durable, and quickly allows gamers to swap into Tabletop Mode on the Switch Lite for easy multiplayer. The peripherals sport built-in turbo buttons, a split d-pad to simulate an actual D-pad on a regular JoyCon controller, and the RT and LT triggers are at the top like old-school SNES bumpers.

Fallout 76 will get a Public Test Server in 2020, if you even cared

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 28, 2019 11:33 PM CDT

Bethesda is still trying to pump life into Fallout 76, with the developer announcing it plans to test software updates in a newly-announced Public Test Server.

Fallout 76 will get a Public Test Server in 2020, if you even cared

Fallout 76's new PTR will open up its doors sometime in 2020 and will allow the company to play around with updates before they go live, so we don't see more incidents of the entire game breaking when it's updated -- like the recent patch to Fallout 76.

Bethesda hasn't provided any details of what to expect just yet, and will share more details on Fallout 76's new PTR when it has "figured out" some of the issues. Bethesda explained: "A Public Test Server (PTS) is currently in the works with the hope to get it up and running in 2020. Once we've figured out all (or most of) the kinks, we will be able to provide more details on our PTS and how you can participate".

System Shock 3 will have no classes, has augmentations like Deus Ex

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 28, 2019 11:15 PM CDT

System Shock 3 is currently in development and my eyes are peeled for every single drip of information we can find on the game, with the latest news directly from System Shock creator himself, Warren Spector.

System Shock 3 will have no classes, has augmentations like Deus Ex

Spector spoke with GameSpot where he revealed System Shock 3 will not have any classes at all, with Spector highlighting something he has talked about for decades now: "playstyle matters". He talks about this extensively in GameSpot's piece if you want to read it in more detail, but it's about immersing the player in a world where every action matters -- and not just because it's marketing speak.

In effect, you are playing you in the game -- and not the avatar inside of the game. System Shock 3 on this principal alone has just dialed up the hype meter a little bit more, as I trust the words of Spector over tens of millions of advertising spend on marketing buzz words.

AMD Radeon RX 5800 series rumored to battle RTX 2070 SUPER

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Sep 28, 2019 10:51 PM CDT

AMD is expected to launch some faster Navi-based graphics cards in the near future, with sources of WCCFTech saying that a new Navi 12-based Radeon RX 5800 series is on the way.

AMD Radeon RX 5800 series rumored to battle RTX 2070 SUPER

We might not see AMD officially launch the new Navi 12-powered parts as the Radeon RX 5800 series with WCCFTech noting that "we shall call it the Radeon RX 5800 series" as it is a "higher-end offering" than the Radeon RX 5700 series. But what can we expect from Navi 12, and the purported RX 5800 series exactly?

Navi 12 should have between 30-50% more stream processors than Navi, with Navi 10 capped at 2560 stream processors on the RX 5700 XT. It should have 8GB of GDDR6 at higher clock speeds, just like the card it will reportedly be directly competing against -- NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER, which has its GDDR6 clocked up to 15.5Gbps (up from 14Gbps on the regular RTX 2070 and all RX 5700 series cards).

The big memory roadblock that's been preventing Halo Reach's MCC test flights on Xbox One has been resolved, and 343i is prepping a new PVP test for the platform. The news was confirmed in a recent Halo social stream, hinting Halo: Reach MCC could release on both PC and Xbox One in 2019 after all.

"We have very talented engineers, they definitely evaluate a lot of the changes they're going to make and where they're going to free up the memory. They make decisions on how to optimize usage," said 343i producer Sean Swidersky.

Halo 5 can soon be played without an Xbox

Microsoft's big new Project xCloud game streaming service is holding private beta tests next month, and includes some surprising games.

Halo 5 can soon be played without an Xbox

Project xCloud aims to counter Google Stadia by beaming Xbox games to mobile devices, laptops, consoles, and eventually, PCs--all without having to buy any extra gaming hardware. But the cloud-streaming subscription isn't ready yet, and Microsoft plans to hold a closed test starting in October. The test will be held in the US, the UK, and Korea, and will be conducted both via Wi-Fi and cellular internet carriers, with special partnerships with T-Mobile, Vodafone, and SK Telecom.

Microsoft plans to test out four titles across a breadth of genres, including: Halo 5: Guardians, Gears of War 5, Killer Instinct, and Sea of Thieves. Access to these games will be 100% free and you'll be prompted to play on both Wi-Fi. It's no coincidence that all of these games are service-related with engagement hooks and in-game spending opportunities, but we suspect these will be turned off during the trial.

Epic Store: in-game overlay, new store UI, and more on the way

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 28, 2019 5:44 PM CDT

The Epic Games Store is about to get a lot better on the eyes. But there's still no word on a shopping cart yet.

Epic Store: in-game overlay, new store UI, and more on the way

The Epic Store is still pretty barebones, but it's getting better over time. With features like cloud saves (albeit ones that can delete your progress accidentally), Epic is slowly making good on its promise to morph the storefront into a Steam-like marketplace. Now the billion dollar games-maker announced some new updates to EGS including a UI overhaul and a few immediate changes that're available today.

Current changes include a play time counter, viewing games in a list view, and smaller patch download sizes via a new optimized toolset. More involved features like a dramatically spruced up storefront page and an in-game overlay are still in the pipeline. After the UI update, EGS will look a lot like Steam, complete with trending tabs, featured squares and ads for games, and a curated section.

GTA III may get re-released on Xbox and Switch

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 28, 2019 4:48 PM CDT

Grand Theft Auto III was just approved by the Australian ratings board, hinting at an incoming re-release.

GTA III may get re-released on Xbox and Switch

Rockstar is making the rounds on new ratings submissions. First Red Dead Redemption II was just re-approved, hinting at a PC release, and now Grand Theft Auto III has been likewise rated. Usually these kinds of submissions/approvals come before a game is released or remastered for other platforms, so by this logic we could see GTA III roll out on Nintendo Switch and Xbox (it's already available on PC and PS4).

If the game does drop on Switch and Xbox, expect a digital release rather than a big retail re-launch. The only way I'd see GTA III arriving in stores again is with a trilogy bundle that packs in Vice City and San Andreas too. Sadly neither Vice City nor San Andreas have recent listings in the database.

Brandon Routh returns as Superman, inspired by Kingdom Come

Anthony Garreffa | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Sep 27, 2019 10:24 PM CDT

In case you weren't aware, Brandon Routh is set to return as Superman -- but he won't be playing the Superman you know him for out of Bryan Singer's Superman Returns from 2006.

Brandon Routh returns as Superman, inspired by Kingdom Come

Routh will play a different Superman inspired by the Kingdom Come version of Kal-El in CW's upcoming five-episode Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. Routh will play an older Superman in the series, with no connection to his Christopher Reeve-inspired stint in Superman Returns.

Not only that, but Supergirl's Tyler Hoechlin will continue his role as Superman while Tom Welling will be Superman from Smallville, which any Smallville will remember Welling never actually wore the Superman suit. He refused to, leaving the crew to add it in post with CG -- it was also very similar to the one Routh wore in Superman Returns at the time.

AMD's next-gen Ryzen Threadripper rumor: won't work on X399 boards

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Sep 27, 2019 9:25 PM CDT

AMD is expected to launch its next-gen third-generation Ryzen Threadripper in November, powered by the new Zen 2 architecture and offering more cores and threads than ever before. But what about X399 compatibility? According to the new rumors: that's a big NOPE.

1usmus is the creator of the DRAM Calculator for AMD Ryzen CPUs (his real name is Yuri Bubily) and his post on Overclock.net he said that AMD has removed X399 compatibility from its upcoming third-gen Ryzen Threadripper CPUs. There are lots of changes with the new Threadripper CPUs, which seem to have forced AMD into new chipsets for the new TR processors.

The new chipsets in question would be the purported TRX40 and TRX80 (really, AMD? Mix that around and it spells RTX... your competitors graphics cards) that would support the next-gen Ryzen Threadripper CPUs.

Apex Legends Season 3 trailer teases new map 'World's End'

Apex Legends Season 3 trailer teases new map 'World's End'

Apex Legends' new season will see Respawn debut a new character in Crypto, as well as a big surprise: a new map called World's End. Unlike Fortnite, which sees Epic Games making continuous changes to its single map -- Respawn has decided to split Apex into two offering two maps.

World's End rocks an awesome fire-and-ice theme with a moveable train with loot on it, and plenty of surprises in store. There will be a bunch of smaller cities, and a huge tower that is covered in ice and gives me the same feels as Superman's iconic Fortress of Solitude.

Red Dead Redemption 2 may not ever get singleplayer DLC

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 27, 2019 3:17 PM CDT

Red Dead Redemption 2 may not get paid expansions or singleplayer DLC.

Red Dead Redemption 2 may not ever get singleplayer DLC

Rockstar games seem to be one-and-done when it comes to singleplayer, and we shouldn't expect any different with Red Dead Redemption 2. The studio takes years and years to craft sprawling, realistic worldscapes with big winding story arcs with definite beginnings, middles and ends. Starting with GTA V, all post-release content has been exclusive to a monetized online mode separate to singleplayer. After earning over $1 billion from GTA Online's microtransactions, this trend is now cemented in Rockstar's roadmap. If singleplayer is the cinematic film, then Rockstar Online (yes, there's an actual umbrella label for its online ventures) is the long-running TV show with tons of ads.

So it's no surprise that Red Dead Online continues the legacy by carving a clear line between singleplayer and multiplayer. And it's also not a surprise that Rockstar really isn't interested in paid DLC when it can earn untold millions (and sometimes $1 billion+) from online content.

Following a tumultuous breakup that just about broke the internet, Sony and Disney are back together for another big Marvel film. The titans of industry ironed out a new deal that sees Disney raking in 25% of all profits from the movie, keeping its original merchandising terms, and paying for roughly 1/4th of the film's production costs.

Kevin Feige is working on the new movie, which is set in the Spider-Man Homecoming universe and due out in July 16, 2021. Tom Holland will star and original movie producer Amy Pascal is reprising her role through Pascal Pictures.

Online-only Last of Us multiplayer game possibly on the way

Online-only Last of Us multiplayer game possibly on the way

The Last of Us Part II is singleplayer-only, but Naughty Dog isn't giving up on online multiplayer any time soon. Today the studio confirmed they're still exploring multiplayer avenues for the series. Naughty Dog is cooking up an evolution of the original Factions multiplayer mode, but it could be a long time before it's ready.

The devs say their vision simply won't fit into an extra mode--it's too big and too ambitious to just be a tacked-on optional experience. No, it deserves something more. Something bigger. It's own retail SKU, for instance, complete with online hooks, engagement, and possibly even microtransactions--all business paths Sony says it needs to work on.
