All traffic blocked in Suez Canal by one of world's largest cargo ship

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Mar 25, 2021 4:31 AM CDT

One of the largest cargo container ships in the entire world has turned sideways and has blocked all traffic in Egypt's Suez Canal.

All traffic blocked in Suez Canal by one of world's largest cargo ship

On Wednesday, officials said that the MV Ever Given, a cargo container ship that conducts trade between Asia and Europe, has become grounded in the man-made waterway that divides Africa from the Sinai Peninsula. According to GAC, the reason the cargo ship turned sideways is because it suffered "a blackout while transiting in a northerly direction."

According to a statement from the Evergreen Marine Corp, a Taiwan-based shipping company that controls the cargo ship, the ship turned sideways because it was overcome by strong winds as it began to enter the Suez Canal. Evergreen Marine Corp also notes that none of the containers have fallen from the ship. Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, which manages the Ever Given, said, "All crew are safe and accounted for. There have been no reports of injuries or pollution." However, management said that the ship never lost power.

NASA snapped a picture of this huge asteroid that just flew by Earth

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Mar 25, 2021 3:33 AM CDT

Recently a massive asteroid closely missed Earth, but luckily, NASA has managed to snap some images of it so we can enjoy the near-miss in high definition.

NASA snapped a picture of this huge asteroid that just flew by Earth

Now, the high-definition images aren't like watching a 4K movie on your home TV, but they are pretty good for an asteroid that is whizzing past 1.3 million miles from Earth. NASA Asteroid Watch Twitter account said that the asteroid "will safely fly by Earth" at a distance of five times further away than the Moon.

As for how big the asteroid is, estimations have put it around 550 meters in diameters, or 1,800 feet. Quite a formidably sized asteroid. Below you will find the image that Virtual Telescope Project (VTP) managed to snap only a few hours after the asteroid flew by Earth. For more information on this story, check out this link here. If you are interested in reading more about giant asteroids, check out this one called Apophis here.

Here's a very satisfying video of SpaceX launching Starlink satellites

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Mar 25, 2021 2:34 AM CDT

On Wednesday, SpaceX did what it does best, launch a rocket into space. The reason for this rocket launch was to deliver a payload of Starlink satellites.

Here's a very satisfying video of SpaceX launching Starlink satellites

As with almost all of SpaceX's rocket launches, the space agency has cameras scattered all around to give viewers a look at the glorious launch. Now, SpaceX has taken to its official Twitter account to post an incredible video of the deployment of 60 Starlink satellites. The clip only goes for 22 seconds, but it shows the satellites in the payload area.

The commentator over the video explains that viewers can see the satellites separating from the second stage. Then over the coming days and weeks, they will begin to distance themselves from each other and use their onboard ion thrusters to make their way to their operational orbits. At the moment, SpaceX has deployed more than 1,000 of these satellites, and the Starlink network is available in beta form in many areas of the United States.

NVIDIA RTX A5000, A4000 workstation Quadro Ampere GPUs teased

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Mar 24, 2021 10:10 PM CDT

NVIDIA has a couple of new Ampere-based workstation cards coming, with some new information from Khronos Group -- a non-profit group that creates royalty-free interoperability standards for 3D graphics.

NVIDIA RTX A5000, A4000 workstation Quadro Ampere GPUs teased

The group teased NVIDIA's new RTX A5000 and RTX A4000 workstation cards just received OpenCL 1.2 certification, and should be the cards that get revealed -- with NVIDIA removing the Quadro RTX branding from its GA102-based RTX A6000 workstation GPU. We should see the NVIDIA RTX A5000 and RTX A4000.

The NVIDIA RTX A5000 should feature the GA104 GPU, while the NVIDIA RTX A4000 should use the GA106, with varying VRAM amounts between the cards. NVIDIA loaded up the RTX A6000 with 48GB of GDDR6 memory, so the RTX A5000 could have 16-32GB of GDDR6, while the RTX A4000 could pack 12-16GB GDDR6 memory.

Nintendo Super Switch rumor: powered by NVIDIA's new Ada Lovelace GPU

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Mar 24, 2021 7:19 PM CDT

We know that Nintendo is working on a next-gen Switch console which I'm hoping the company calls the Nintendo Super Switch, but now a known leaker has teased NVIDIA's next-gen Ada Lovelace GPU will power Nintendo's new Super Switch.

Nintendo Super Switch rumor: powered by NVIDIA's new Ada Lovelace GPU

In a tweet by VideoCardz about the new Switch and it having NVIDIA DLSS technology enabled in TV mode, kopite7kimi simply replied with "ada" referencing NVIDIA's next-gen Ada Lovelace GPU architecture. NVIDIA's next-gen Ada Lovelace GPU architecture will succeed Ampere, the GPU architecture that powers the GeForce RTX 30 series of graphics cards.

We should hear more about NVIDIA's new Ada Lovelace GPU architecture at NVIDIA's upcoming GTC 2021 event, where NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang will don the leather jacket and provide the world with a keynote. This news flies right in the face of the recent rumors that the new Switch would have a custom 12nm Tegra Xavier SoC with the graphics side of things handled by the Volta GPU architecture.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti now expected in May, GPU yields very low

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Mar 24, 2021 6:24 PM CDT

If you were marking on your calendar for when you couldn't buy the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti in April 2021 because there's probably going to be 100 available worldwide -- well, strike that out -- the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti is reportedly coming in May instead.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti now expected in May, GPU yields very low

According to sources of ITHome: "NVIDIA internally issued a new announcement that the release time of the next-generation RTX30 series model. The RTX 3080Ti 12G has been delayed again, and it is now expected to be released around mid-May".

But then in the last 48 hours or so I've heard from my sources that GPU yields on the new RTX 3080 Ti are very low, with some supply chain issues causing more problems for NVIDIA and its new GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 30 series SUPER releases. NVIDIA had originally planned its GeForce RTX 3080 Ti for late last year, with December 2020 being the plan -- but low GPU yields and ABF substrate shortages are causing major headaches not only for NVIDIA but AMD.

Fallout 76 pets: dogs & cats first, more creatures (and robots?) later

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 24, 2021 2:33 PM CDT

Pets are coming to Fallout 76's player-created C.A.M.P.s to make them feel more like home. So what can we expect to see?

Fallout 76 pets: dogs & cats first, more creatures (and robots?) later

In a recent Reddit AmA, Fallout 76 developers revealed a ton about the game's upcoming roadmap. There was talk about the alien Zetans from the stars, discussions on private servers, content rebalancing, and pets. Yes, pets are coming to Fallout 76, but they won't be like Dogmeat from Fallout 4--instead they'll be stuck in your C.A.M.P. for now (you can, however, technically tame animals in the game).

So what kind of pets will we get? Bethesda says dogs are coming first, followed by cats. Then...who knows? Robots? Irradiated nasties shrunken down to cute bite-sized proportions? The team did express interest in adding a pet Liberator, and we could see mini deathclaws and other domesticated monsters show up.

Hitman 3 is getting a 7-part expansion for each seven deadly sin

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 24, 2021 12:34 PM CDT

Hitman 3's new DLC model is an interesting introspective journey into the mind of ruthless killer Agent 47 with horror movie overtones.

Hitman 3 is getting a 7-part expansion for each seven deadly sin

Have you ever seen Se7en? IO Interactive has a unique idea for DLC: Adapt each of the seven deadly sins (gluttony, lust, greed, envy, sloth, pride, wrath) into episodic mini-expansions complete with their own themed missions. It gets better, though. The DLC is based around a psychological exploration of Agent 47's psyche and each of the expansion's environments are based around that particular sin.

The first expansion focuses on greed, so it'll feature lots of opulence--everything is covered with gold, and there's even a new gleaming suit and golden cane to unlock.

Elon Musk: you can now buy a Tesla with Bitcoin

Anthony Garreffa | Cryptocurrency & Mining | Mar 24, 2021 5:40 AM CDT

Tesla boss Elon Musk tweeted out that you can now buy a Tesla vehicle using Bitcoin, but it is only in the US for now with people outside of the US needing to wait until later this year.

Elon Musk: you can now buy a Tesla with Bitcoin

Musk simply tweeted out: "You can now buy a Tesla with Bitcoin", which saw the price of BTC flying up from just under $54K to just under $57K and resting at around $56.3K at the time of writing. There was a follow-up tweet that was very interesting, with Musk saying that "Tesla is using only internal & open source software & operates Bitcoin nodes directly".

Even more interestingly, he added: "Bitcoin paid to Tesla will be retained as Bitcoin, not converted to fiat currency". This means that Tesla will be HODLing the BTC it acquires through customers buying Tesla vehicles with Bitcoin and NOT converting it over to fiat money. This is a major move, as Tesla would benefit greatly with the price of Bitcoin rising the company will continue to increase its BTC bag size with more and more Tesla vehicles sold (and paid for in Bitcoin).

Xbox LIVE name changed to distinguish subscription from online network

Microsoft clarifies exactly what's going on with the recent Xbox LIVE name change and affirms that Xbox LIVE Gold isn't going anywhere.

Xbox LIVE name changed to distinguish subscription from online network

Microsoft recently put out a statement confirming Xbox LIVE has been rebranded to the Xbox network, a move that baffled consumers. Now it says it made the move in an effort to separate the online network from the paid online service.

Before now, Xbox LIVE was a blanket term that described both the monthly subscription service (Xbox LIVE Gold) and Microsoft's online gaming network. The term was used interchangeably between the two. The recent name change only affects the latter; instead of Xbox LIVE, the online infrastructure is now called the Xbox network.

Switch Pro: Xavier SoC with DLSS 4K gaming, 1.4 TFLOPs, Volta GPU?

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 23, 2021 10:33 AM CDT

Nintendo is readying a new 4K-ready Switch model for 2021 to round out its hardware family, sources tell Bloomberg.

Switch Pro: Xavier SoC with DLSS 4K gaming, 1.4 TFLOPs, Volta GPU?

The new rumored Switch Pro is coming in 2021, and could cost as much as $399, sources tell Bloomberg. The new console-handheld hybrid will feature hefty upgrades including a new higher-end NVIDIA SoC with a beefier CPU and more RAM. The new Switch's main selling point is 4K video output and enhanced performance across the board.

The upgrade is said to use NVIDIA's powerful AI-based DLSS upscaling technology as a cost-effective solution for 4K gaming. DLSS boosts frame rates, allows for resolution increases, and sharpens visuals using machine learning, but games must be updated in order to take advantage of it. Nintendo may go through its own iterative cycle which sees developers going back and updating titles similar to the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X optimizations implemented years ago.

Microsoft said to buy Discord for $10 billion

Social chat platform Discord is looking to sell, and reports say Microsoft is looking to buy the service for a substantial sum.

Microsoft said to buy Discord for $10 billion

Discord is following up on several acquisition offers and is currently in talks to sell the company to Microsoft, sources tell Bloomberg. Based on Discord's previous $7 billion valuation in December, the buyout could cost as much as $10 billion.

The acquisition makes sense for Microsoft, who has positioned its Xbox brand front and center to its core business. The Redmond-based titan recently purchased ZeniMax Media for $7.5 billion in the second-largest gaming buyout in history. Xbox has a billion-dollar ecosystem of gaming, services, and content, and Discord could be a neat way to wrap PC and console gaming together. Microsoft merged Xbox LIVE connectivity into Discord in 2018 Discord currently has 140 million active users and is one of the most powerful networks for engagement and social connectivity in the games industry.

Incredible video of meteor plummeting across the sky during the day

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Mar 23, 2021 5:32 AM CDT

Dashcam footage can be pretty useful as it can prove your case in the event of a car crash or even capture a meteor streaking across the sky.

Incredible video of meteor plummeting across the sky during the day

Ian Dryhurst was driving his family in Jersey and was lucky enough to capture the latter. Ian and his wife and two sons noticed a "bright light" appearing in the sky, and then it streaked over the Channel Islands at 2.45 pm this past Saturday. Multiple people spotted the meteor and reported hearing an explosion-like sound. This 'explosion-like sound' is the sound of an object breaking the speed of sound.

Oxford University physicist Simon Proud took to Twitter to share satellite images of the meteor streaking across the UK sky. Additionally, Jeresey's harbourmaster confirmed that the sonic boom came from the meteor, and to back that up, the British Geological survey tweeted there was "no evidence of any seismic event" along with the Ministry of Defense saying the sonic boom wasn't caused by an RAF aircraft. Samsung rumored to be working on 'double-folding' foldable smartphone

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Mar 22, 2021 9:29 PM CDT

Samsung has a number of foldable smartphones on the market right now, and it seems the South Korean electronics giant is not slowing down one bit.

Samsung rumored to be working on 'double-folding' foldable smartphone

Fresh rumors suggest Samsung is working on a new "double-folding" smartphone, which would see the smartphone fully unfolding into bigger smartphone with an aspect ratio of 16:9 or 18:9. Why is this important? The scaling issues with Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 2 should be a thing of the past with the "double-folding" display.

Nikkei Asia is reporting that Samsung is "betting heavily on foldable smartphones, with plans to sharply increase production and a new, double-folding model under development". Samsung has already confirmed it will be skipping over the release of the Galaxy Note this year, while in its place foldable smartphone announcements increase.
