GIGABYTE has added support for memory chips from a Chinese DDR5 manufacturer with its AM5 motherboards to give customers more options amid the ongoing memory crisis. GIGABYTE reports that with the release of AMD's AGESA 1.3.0.1c microcode, its 800 and 600 series motherboards now support CXMT memory at speeds of up to 8200 MT/s.

GIGABYTE's AM5 motherboards support 16Gb and 24Gb versions of CXMT's chips, matching support with more well-known memory brands such as Samsung and Micron. 24Gb is a new chip capacity introduced with DDR5 that provides customers with 24GB DIMM options. GIGABYTE also claims that the 8200MT/s limit introduced with AGESA 1.3.0.1c breaks the previous speed limit AM5 was capable of running with CXMT chips. (The previous limit was 6800 MT/s.)

CXMT has grown massively over the past few years and is now the fourth-largest DRAM manufacturer in the world, right behind Micron, SK Hynix, and Samsung. The Chinese DRAM manufacturer has gained a lot of attention as of late from system manufacturers due to the company's growing size and its plans to potentially break into the US market. There are no signs of CXMT slowing down, with the DRAM maker reportedly projected to produce 350,000 wafers per month, matching Micron's production capabilities.

CXMT technically boasts inferior-performing memory chips thanks to U.S. regulations preventing the Chinese manufacturer from attaining bleeding-edge tooling that Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron have access to. But its chips are performant enough for mainstream applications; its 5th-generation DDR5 memory, for example, is capable of operating at up to 8000 MT/s.
