CODE VEIN gets gruesome, but rocking opening cinematic intro
A brand new opening cinematic has been released for Bandai Namco's upcoming vampire slaying title CODE VEIN. Prepare for gruesome yet awesome anime cutscenes.
The above trailer introduces us to some of the characters; Mia, Louis, Yokumo are spotted - as well as some others. We also see that each of the characters are equipped with their own weapon on choice as well as some sweet abilities to go alongside them. The trailer is quite bloodpacked, making the slaying of each of the vampires just that much better to watch.
The trailer was animated by Ufotable, who is the studio behind many other Bandai Namco game cutscenes such as Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Zesteria. If you aren't aware of what CODE VEIN actually is, the title is a "story driven connected dungeon experience" that players will take on "quests with your friends in online co-op". CODE VEIN arrives on PC, Xbox One and PS4 on September 27th.

Cyberpunk 2077 graphics are 'quite amazing' even on consoles
Cyberpunk 2077 is shaping up to be one of the best-looking games of all time, with some of the exclusive gameplay shown off at E3 2019 (something I actually witnessed myself) looking absolutely delicious. But what will it look like on current-gen consoles and low-end PCs?
During the show Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD PROJEKT RED's Alvin Liu was interviewed by WCCFTech, where they talked questioned "Cyberpunk 2077 could look and run on consoles and low-end PCs. Is that a challenge in terms of optimization for lower-end hardware?" The developer replied: "Actually no, we have a very custom engine, the RED Engine. And actually, we're targeting consoles as first class platforms and it looks amazing there".
Liu continued: "So obviously, if you spent, you know, $2,000 building your PC rig, it's going to look better on that. But the graphics are quite amazing for what you're going to get from Cyberpunk 2077 on consoles and low-end PCs".

The first 13 minutes of Control gameplay has been teased
We have our latest look at Control thanks to a new IGN First video called 'The First 13 Minutes of Control' which we've got embedded below. It shows of the first 13 minutes of Remedy Entertainment's upcoming game Control, and protagonist Jesse Faden.
In the video, the player controls Faden and explores the Federal Bureau of Control's HQ, with an eerie feeling the entire time -- a setting that I'm really liking the look of. The first half of the 13-minute video sees the player moving nice and slow to let that creepy environment seep in, something I really want to see myself run with NVIDIA's new RTX technology and real-time ray tracing. I played a bit during the SUPER unveiling at E3 2019, and now I want more.
At the 8:54 mark we see a poster for the astral plane, but the look and feel of these videos gives me a serious Lost vibe that I love, a masterpiece TV show (sure a few seasons sucked, but the show had its moments of greatness, and many of them). After her initiation, Faden is taken to the Astral Plane to complete a challenge set to her by the mysterious board of Control.

Forget Cal, Greez is Jedi: Fallen Order's real star
Keep your Jedi acrobatics and lightsabers; let me play as this alien who looks like Carl from Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
Star Wars never really took itself too seriously. It's known for blending somber Hero's Journey stories with goofy humor, often personified with wacky aliens. Respawn's big new Jedi: Fallen Order game will be no different, and has an awesome alien character that just steals the show. His name's Greez. He's got four arms, he's balding, and just the way he dresses and carries himself makes me think of Carl Brutananadilewski from Aqua Teen.
Recent reports that an alien protagonist would "alienate" Star Wars fans got me thinking about spin-offs starring sidekicks or token characters. What if we got a game where you're not a Jedi, but a scrappy bounty hunter or even a wheeling-and-dealing criminal ship pilot? What if the whole game was centered around a kind of seedy underbelly--wait, I'm just thinking of cancelled Star Wars games like Visceral's Ragtag and Star Wars 1313, aren't I?

New Batman collection doesn't have Arkham Knight on disc
Following a leak from Amazon UK (which is all too common these days), Rocksteady confirms Batman's Arkham trilogy collection is coming to current-gen consoles.
The Batman Arkham Collection is coming to Europe and the UK in September, but a release probably won't happen for North America, Rocksteady's Marketing Game Manager Gaz Deaves confirms. The re-release is partly to celebrate the Caped Crusader's 80th anniversary, and gives Rocksteady a nice extra bit of cash to help fund its next big game (which could be an online Justice League title, but definitely isn't Superman).
"Batman: Arkham Collection is coming to Europe in Sept, and includes the E2DK skin (the first time it's available outside NA). Early next year E2DK will be released as a free download for everyone who owns BAK on PS4 worldwide," Deaves said on Twitter.

Borderlands 3 borrows this amazing feature from Apex Legends
Borderlands 3 is borrowing one of Apex Legends' best team-based features: the ping system.
Gearbox confirms item-pinging is coming to Borderlands 3, letting gamers intuitively and quickly relay info without having to actually say anything. The system is an invaluable communication tool that basically marks areas or items of interest on your HUD like ammo, guns, enemies, and more. Pinging is a good supplement for cohesive gameplay, but I'm wondering if such a tight focus is really needed for a PVE shooter. Maybe things will get super dicey in Borderlands 3's off-world skirmishes?
"This new pinging feature-particularly useful if you play cooperatively without a mic-lets you quickly and effectively communicate the positions of enemies, loot chests, guns, and other points of interest by highlighting them both in-world and on the minimap," Gearbox wrote on a blog update.

Nintendo Switch Online reaches 10 million accounts created
In Nintendo's recent shareholder announcement meeting we have learned that the Nintendo Switch Online service is home to over 10 million users.
Nintendo has released the transcripts of their 79th annual general meeting of shareholders, and one of the questions that was posted to Nintendo regarded the attraction of their Nintendo Switch Online service. Here is the question: "A Nintendo Switch Online subscription is very inexpensive, so the barrier to entry feels low, but on the other hand the content of the service still feels rather weak. How will you enhance the service going forward?"
Shuntaro Furukawa, the representative Director and President of Nintendo replied and said "The number of subscribers for Nintendo Switch Online has increased steadily since the service was launched last September, and it has now surpassed 10 million accounts. Nintendo Switch Online provides users the ability to play Nintendo Switch games over the internet, both competitively and cooperatively."

Gears of War 5 PC requirements revealed ahead of tech test
We aren't far away from the Gears of War 5 technical test on the PC, with developer The Coalition releasing some early PC requirements for the game. You will need to have Windows 10 with the May 2019 update applied at a bare minimum, along with 6GB of RAM and 15GB of HDD space.

Nintendo wants to make more funky controllers
Nintendo is currently experimenting with lots of weird R&D controller designs for its next generation of hardware.
When it comes to controllers, Nintendo has been a huge pioneer. First they implemented the D-Pad, then they made huge waves with the N64's analog stick, followed up by the megaton bomb of the Wii's motion controls. The Switch however is more of an evolution of the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS than its own thing. Now they're working on something else, something different, something that may define its new generation of console hardware.
In a recent investors Q&A meeting, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto says the company needs to accelerate its unique controller designs to compliment next-gen hardware. That last bit is quite interesting, too, because up until this point Nintendo has disavowed new Switch models. But Nintendo President Shuntaro Furakawa sort of teased a new Switch at the event and Miyamoto's words reinforce a new system is in the works.

Cloud-based Xbox set top box in development
Microsoft is apparently still developing a low-cost Xbox made specifically for Project xCloud game streaming.
A while back we predicted Microsoft could release a streaming-only Xbox built around its new cloud-based games service. The idea is the cheaper box wouldn't be a dedicated machine that plays games on its own, but instead be similar to a set top box that acts as a receiver for games beamed from Microsoft's Project xCloud servers. Then a few weeks after our prediction, word broke out that Microsoft was indeed making such a device. It's been a while since we last heard about the box, but now reports have resurfaced.
Sources tell Windows insider Brad Sams that the streaming-only box is in active development. Details are still shaky but the system, which could be an HDMI stick, a dongle, or even a smaller box, was likely built from the old experimental Project Hobart device.

Moon's haunted: Shadowkeep's locale shown in ghastly video
The moon is haunted, and terrors roam its blasted surface. Some new Shadowkeep footage takes players back to those hallowed Giger-esque chasms and macabre pits of doom.
Destiny's moonscape was always captivating. It's a place of ancient, eldritch power, where specters roam and undying creatures plot in the dark. Destiny 2's big new Shadowkeep expansion is basically a horror film that preys deeply on your fear with its environments and enemies, and this new bit of footage certainly raises our hackles.
From the claustrophobic halls of blackness to the dark cathedrals to blasphemous gods, Shadowkeep is an exotic foray into the bizarre. It's like a twisted mashup of the world's most profoundly weird artists: Beksinski, Barlowe, Giger, even pieces straight out of a Barker horror flick.

'Rarest game EVER' on sale at $90,000 for the Atari 2600
I still remember buying an overseas copy of Grand Theft Auto III for my PlayStation 2 at the time as the "Hot Coffee" version was banned in Australia, so I imported it from New Zealand for something like $150 at the time. But that's about my limit... $90,000 on the other hand? That game better get up, clean my house, cook me dinner and do my work for me everyday, right?
Well, some collectors will happily pay $90,000 for a rare game like Extra Terrestrials -- yeah, the one that no one would remember from 1983 for the Atari 2600. A game released in the same year I was born is sitting on eBay for $90,000 and could be the rarest game in existence. A physical copy of Extra Terrestrials is so rare as it was one of the last games manufacturered for the Atari 2600 in 1984, as the wave of the huge video game crash of 1983 happened.
The seller on eBay is called 'gamewizard69' that explains: "the only confirmed private owner of this game right now", with the only other copy being in the PC Museum. It will come with the cartridge only, no retail packaging and is in an "acceptable condition". Yay, for $90,000 it can be all yours.

Doom gets reborn in Doom 3's engine, and it looks AWESOME
Doom, the bad mofo of all first-person shooters. Everyone knows it, everyone loves it, and now the rip-and-tear classic is getting re-skinned with some modded upgrades.
Doom still looks and plays great today, pixellated effects and all. Like the virulent heart of evil, Doom is immortal and has stayed true to its legacy for decades. But that hasn't stopped talented modders like gamehacker from updating the demon-slaughtering original with some updated visuals.
Introducing Doom Reborn, a total conversion mod that merges old-school mayhem with Doom 3's idTech 4 engine. Essentially the mod recreates both Doom and Doom 2 with the newer idTech 4 toolset, allowing for beefier visuals, drastically improved combat fluidity, and some nifty lighting effects and textures. It's the hell-razing adventure you remember only with a different skin.

Nintendo on new Switch: We're always making new hardware
There's been lots of mixed signals on a new Switch model, and Nintendo of course doesn't clear anything up.
We've been hearing about a Switch Mini for a while now. Reports say system will replace the flagging 3DS as a lower-cost entry point to the Switch ecosystem, playing all Switch games and even dock for TV play. The trade-off? Fused JoyCons that don't detach, a smaller form factor with possibly a smaller screen, and no included dock. Specs should be the same. A Chinese retailer also put up some mock-up cases for the Switch Mini, igniting further speculation. There's also rumblings of a beefier next-gen Switch model that could get some upgrades, or a slightly revised Switch variant with a new OLED panel. Then key sources told Bloomberg that the next-gen Switch isn't happening after all. So what gives?
Nintendo didn't reveal any new info (and won't until the device is actually ready) but we did get a few teasers from the recent shareholders Q&A event in Japan. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa says the company is always making new hardware (most of which is never actually released) and he won't discuss any details because it'd ruin the surprise.

Nintendo closely watching game streaming, 5G tech
Cloud game streaming is on the rise, but Nintendo isn't ready to jump in just yet. It plans to watch to see how the game unfolds.
Two major game streaming platforms are launching this year: Google's new Stadia platform, and Microsoft's Project xCloud. Both will beam games directly to devices gamers already own for a set fee. Sony has likewise been in the streaming game since 2014 with PS Now. But Nintendo's foray with streaming has been a toe-dip versus its competitors' deep dives. The company's been experimenting with a weird on-demand cloud streaming option in Japan that rents out Switch games for a period of time...however that's not really sustainable. Now Nintendo says it's interested in game streaming, 5G, and cloud tech, but only as a tentative buffer to its dedicated console business.
In a recent shareholders Q&A session, top Nintendo execs remarked about game streaming and how it could affect their strategy for the future. If anything, it'll supplement the core business of selling games on dedicated hardware instead of replacing it (both Microsoft and Sony are taking this proactive approach, whereas Stadia is a hostile attack on all gaming hardware). And Nintendo will only fully embrace game streaming when it becomes big.

Nintendo comments on Switch's lower-end power
The Switch might not be as powerful as an Xbox One or PS4, but it's quite mighty in other ways.
To get games running on the Nintendo Switch, developers have to scale back their games and dial down resolution, frame rates, draw distances--pretty much every aspect has to be carefully balanced. The Nintendo Switch's lower-end Tegra X1 SoC is a thorn in developers' sides and the system's form-factor power disparity doesn't help. As a result, many AAA games have skipped the Switch because certain games just won't run on it (conversely, even The Witcher 3 is getting ported).
Nintendo investors have noticed this gap in AAA games. The Switch's 34.74 million install base makes it appealing for some projects like indies, re-releases, and a handful of new titles, but it's not always included for big-budget games (although more and more publishers are embracing it).
