ASUS confirms it will release a HoloLens-like AR headset in 2016

Anthony Garreffa | Extended Reality (XR) | Nov 13, 2015 10:26 AM CST

We heard that ASUS were working on an AR headset, but now the Taiwanese giant has confirmed these plans. ASUS CEO Jonny Shih said: "It should be next year when we come out with a product. We think AR will be very important for people's lives".

The new AR headset from ASUS should be very similar to Microsoft's work with HoloLens, but at a much cheaper price. HoloLens will be hovering around the $3000 price point, pushing it out of the realm of normal consumers. If ASUS can nail it at $500-$1000, it'll attract a much wider audience.

We don't know what ASUS could do with its own AR headset, I just love the fact that ASUS will throw themselves (and plenty of money, R&D time, and man hours) into a completely new market. We should expect to see something at CES 2016 in January, if not I'm sure ASUS will take the stage at Computex 2016 in June with its new AR headset.

EVE developer raises $30 million to boost 'leadership position' in VR

Anthony Garreffa | Extended Reality (XR) | Nov 13, 2015 6:31 AM CST

CCP Games has already been at the forefront of VR technology since the Oculus Rift hit Kickstarter all those years ago, but the company which recently divested itself of White Wolf Publishing, has secured a huge $30 million round of funding for all things VR.

The funding was led by global venture capital firm New Enterprise Associates, with the help of private equity firm Novator Partners LLP. The funding deal includes General Partner of NEA, Harry Weller, to join the Board of Directors at CCP Games, as well as Andrew Schoen from NEA, who will join as Deputy Director.

Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of CCP, said: "We believe VR will revolutionize not just videogames, but the wider technology and media industry as a whole. We were there at the beginning, and this investment will give us strength to maintain our leading development efforts". Weller added: "We've been admirers of CCP for quite some time. Their legacy with EVE Online and early investments in VR have put them in a leadership position, and we want to partner with them to further build on the great platform they have already established".

Mobile gaming is big business, worth $25 billion by the end of 2015

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Nov 13, 2015 4:35 AM CST

We know that mobile gaming is huge, but did you know it was worth up to $25 billion? According to the latest report from EEDAR 'Deconstructing Mobile & Tablet Gaming 2015', the global market for mobile gaming will be worth $25 billion or so by the end of 2015.

The United States, Japan and China are where most of the money is made with $5.41 billion, $5.16 billion and $5.01 billion, respectively. South Korea is behind considerably, but still worth a large chunk of $1.37 billion. The Asia Pacific countries collectively make up most of the world's mobile gaming business, with 50% of the world's mobile gamers making 56% of the global revenues coming from the Asia Pacific region.

When you take a closer look at the numbers, the US is where there are more female mobile gamers, with 55% of mobile gamers being women. In Japan, China and South Korea, 55-60% of mobile gamers are male. When you break down the amount of money gamers are spending on mobile gaming, mobile gamers in the US spend around $3.30 per month each on games. But in China, it drops to $1.32 and up considerably for South Korea with $5.91. Looking at the Japanese mobile gamers, where they have an overall average spending of $9.39.

Intel's new Xeon E5-2600 v4 will feature 44 threads of CPU power

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Nov 13, 2015 12:24 AM CST

While we just found out some details on the upcoming Broadwell-E platform, including the flagship Core i7-6950X and Core i7-6900K SKUs, there is some more exciting stuff for the Xeon family of processors.

The Broadwell-EP update will arrive in Q1 2016, with the new Xeon E5-2600 v4 processor featuring up to 22 CPU cores, with 44 threads thanks to HyperThreading technology. Intel's new Xeon E5-2600 v4 processors will boast up to 55MB of L3 cache, and have TDPs of up to 145W. The new Xeon processors will be slotted into the Grantley family, with quad-channel DDR4 support to boot.

Over the next few years, we'll see the new Skylake-EP and Skylake-EX processors from Intel, with the Xeon CPUs featuring up to 56 and 64 CPU threads. From there, in 2018 we can expect the Cannonlake-EP and Cannonlake-EX processors to really hit their stride, being made on the incredibly small 10nm process on the new Socket P platform. These processors should rock up to 68 or more CPU threads and have between 80-85MB of L3 cache. Exciting times.

Intel's next-gen Core i7-6950X to feature 10 CPU cores, 20 threads

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Nov 12, 2015 10:34 PM CST

Intel's next generation Broadwell-E platform is on its way, where we're learning about the next-gen HEDT family that will still work on existing X99 platform, with an entire new SKU lineup of exciting processors.

The flagship CPU in the new Broadwell-E family will be the Core i7-6950X, which will feature 10 x CPU cores and thanks to Hyper-Threading, 20 threads. The Core i7-6950X should be clocked at around 3GHz, but this will change between now and its release which is expected in the first half of 2016. But can you imagine 20 x 4GHz processors being inside of your PC?

There will be plenty of other CPUs released in the Broadwell-E family, including the new Core i7-6900K. The new Core i7-6900K will also be manufactured on Intel's impressive 14nm technology, with 16 threads of power behind it. The Core i7-6900K should rock a frequency of 3.3GHz, and 20MB of L3 cache. It will reportedly land on the X99 platform, which will confuse most people as the Core i7-6700K fits onto the Z170 chipset.

AMD will power next-gen consoles, 5x performance per watt and VR ready

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Nov 12, 2015 6:26 PM CST

The current-gen consoles suck. There, it's out of the way. They are vastly underpowered, with gamers seemingly happy with 720p-ish graphics and 30FPS-ish frame rates. Well, it looks like the next-gen consoles will solve that.

Rumor has it AMD will once again be providing the APUs for the next-gen consoles, expected in 2018. These consoles will have at least 5x the performance per watt of the current generation, so we should expect at least 1080p 60FPS at a bare minimum, and more like 4K 60FPS. AMD is hoping to provide their next-gen APUs to Microsoft and Sony by 2018, so we should expect next-gen consoles to be teased sometime in 2017.

AMD is also shifting considerable focus into VR, where we can expect the next-gen consoles to be based around virtual reality. By then, PC gamers would've enjoyed the first, and most likely successive generations of Oculus Rift and HTC Vive (as well as many more), and with the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive requiring higher than 2560x1440 at 90FPS, next-gen consoles are going to need some serious GPU horsepower to drive high resolutions with sustained high frame rates.

Fallout 4 Guide Part 2: Building epic battles with console commands

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 12, 2015 5:11 PM CST

I have to say that playing around with Fallout 4's PC console commands is almost as much fun as the actual game. Bethesda basically gives us the tools to become gods over the Commonwealth, letting us do whatever we want. The phrase "the world is your oyster" comes to mind, and using console commands you can shuck it all you want.

Fallout 4 Guide Part 2: Building epic battles with console commands

In this tutorial we'll not only give you some basic console commands, but we'll arm you with the tools to find any item ID in the game. So that means no more scouting websites and digging through posts to see if your favorite gear is up yet. Instead we'll show you how to find out with a simple command. Information is power, after all, and we aim to fully empower you with everything you need to have a blast with your godly abilities.

First let's start out with the basic commands. ID's for items, enemies and characters are only half of the puzzle. Think of the ID as the answer, but you still need the equation to balance everything out. In this short Google Doc you'll find a number of easy commands. Be sure to check this list of item ID's as a quick way to spawn goods. Apart from being able to spawn any item, NPC or boss in the game, the console adds the extra benefit of being able to earn achievements with buffs and cheats are active.

Upcoming Nintendo smartphone games will all have microtransactions

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 12, 2015 1:25 PM CST

Not so long ago, Nintendo revealed its first-ever smartphone game would be a free-to-play social Mii-hub called Miitomo. Like most free-to-play smartphone games, Miitomo is powered by freemium-style microtransactions built upon DeNA's market framework. However, it looks like every upcoming Nintendo-branded smartphone game will be riddled with paid content as the company makes an effort to fully tap the new platform.

Upcoming Nintendo smartphone games will all have microtransactions

"Games currently in the pipeline are all free to play," DeNA CEO Isao Moriyasu said during an earnings event, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. DeNA and Nintendo currently plan to release five different smartphone games up until March 2017, and all of them will be freemium-based experiences.

In a bid to tap the rich vein of mobile gaming and expand its presence, Nintendo partnered with the Japanese freemium moguls at DeNA, forming a union that is paced to inject Nintendo's quirky library onto the hugely popular mobile sector. The partnership came as a shock to many, as it was the first time Nintendo went outside of its first-party hardware pool to actively seek a widely accessible platform.

New Fallout 4 glitch lets you rack up infinite bottlecaps

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 12, 2015 10:38 AM CST

Fallout 4 has only been out for two days now, but gamers are busily deconstructing its layered surfaces and cataloging exploits. Just like every Bethesda game, Fallout 4 has an infinite money glitch that users are exploiting to rack up caps pretty fast.

New Fallout 4 glitch lets you rack up infinite bottlecaps

The glitch is actually pretty easy to do, and involves buying and reselling ammo from vendors. After spending countless hours exploiting the Talking Mudcrab Merchant in Morrowind, I'm not surprised that the money bug is built around bartering. The glitch is a step-by-step process, and the video tutorial above shows off five different parts. First off you'll want to buy out any one specific type of ammo from the vendor, then sell back a single round. After that go ahead and sell back the remaining rounds. Selling it separate stacks makes a single round glitch out and stay in your inventory so you can keep selling it over and over.

To do this glitch you want to start off with a high-earning round, like .308 rounds. I'm curious to see if this works with Mini-Nukes or not. Those atomic explosives are worth quite a bit and you could clean out any merchant in no time flat. Apparently the glitch also works with other types of ammo. Remember that every merchant's cap stash replenishes every 24 hours, so you can go to Diamond City, clean out the merchants, sleep for a day, and repeat.

German technology prototype lets you feel in virtual reality

Sean Ridgeley | Extended Reality (XR) | Nov 11, 2015 2:01 PM CST

Researchers from the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) lab at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Germany have developed technology that lets the user feel in virtual reality, rather than just see.

German technology prototype lets you feel in virtual reality

Impacto, as the tech is called, is currently in the prototype phase. It's integrated into a band you can wear on your arm, leg, or foot, and in combination with VR and custom software, simulates contact. This simulation is achieved via a haptic vibration engine and electrical muscle stimulation, which work together to create a close to real sense of pushing, pulling, hitting, bouncing a soccer ball, etc. -- so it's much more than what we see with vibrating controllers, for example.

"The key idea that allows the small and light Impacto device to simulate a strong hit is that it decomposes the stimulus: it renders the tactile aspect of being hit by tapping the skin using a solenoid; it adds impact to the hit by thrusting the user's arm backwards using electrical muscle stimulation," says team lead Pedro Lopes. "The device is self-contained, wireless, and small enough for wearable use, thus leaves the user unencumbered and able to walk around freely in a virtual environment. The device is of generic shape, allowing it to also be worn on legs, so as to enhance the experience of kicking, or merged into props, such as a baseball bat."

NVIDIA launches its incredibly powerful, yet super-small Jetson TX1

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Nov 11, 2015 2:33 AM CST

NVIDIA is hoping to inspire the next step in artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous robots and drones with the release of its Jetson TX1 device, which is the first embeddable computer designed from the ground up for deep neural networks - and probably the birth of Skynet.

The new Maxwell-powered Jetson TX1, in the right setup, can 'see' something, process the information, and learn from the experience. It's scary, but super exciting, which NVIDIA hopes to see a future of autonomous machines, vehicles, and more. As Android Central notes "The future will be filled with drones delivering packages, cars that drive themselves and robot butlers that help me match my shirt to my socks" and NVIDIA is positioning itself incredibly well with the Jetson TX1.

Sony Pictures announce first 4K UltraHD Blu-ray titles coming for 2016

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Nov 10, 2015 7:21 PM CST

Eight weeks on from the first announcement of 4k UltraHD Blu-ray titles coming from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures; one of the biggest advocates for the format has revealed their first wave of release which will hit the market in early 2016 - and it's an eclectic bunch, to be sure!

According to the company's press release, the first batch will be headlined by the admittedly disappointing 2014 action blockbuster 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2', along with 'Salt', 'Hancock', 'Chappie', 'Pineapple Express' and 'The Smurfs 2'. All titles will future HDR enhancement, along with support for next generation audio codecs - likely to be DTS:X.

Sony Pictures have been aggressively mining their back catalogue and striking new 4K digital intermediates in preparation for the UltraHD future, issuing some out in remastered 1080p Blu-ray releases. The press release also promises future 4K releases including 'Fury', 'Captain Phillips', 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon', 'Men In Black', 'Ghostbusters', 'The Fifth Element', 'Bad Boys', 'The Da Vinci Code', 'Bram Stoker's Dracula', 'Leon: The Professional', 'Lawrence Of Arabia', 'The Bridge on the River Kwai', 'The Guns of Navarone', 'Taxi Driver' and 'Mr. Smith Goes to Washington', along with "many others". It will certainly be interesting to see how the market responds to another physical format, surely to be the last of its kind.

Video streaming on unlimited T-Mobile plans no longer uses data

Derek Strickland | Mobile Devices | Nov 10, 2015 6:43 PM CST

T-Mobile today announced huge news for its wireless users: streaming content on 4G will no longer eat away at data plans. Netflix, Hulu, Sling TV and more video streaming apps will now cease their voracious gobbling of cellular data and will be totally free for T-Mobile subscribers.

Video streaming on unlimited T-Mobile plans no longer uses data

"Start watching your shows, stop watching your data," T-Mobile CEO John Legere said at carrier's Uncarrier X event. The move is part of T-Mobile's "Binge On" initiative, and could be a substantial game-changer against its competition. Some 24 services are included in the program, with powerhouse titans like Netflix and HBO GO filling out the roster.

The free streaming comes with a caveat, however. Legere reveals that the streams are "optimized at a lower quality so they won't use unnecessary data". The footage will be streamed in lower-quality 480p rather than full 1080p, which will see a pretty hefty reduction in visual fidelity. The free streaming option is set to go into effect starting this Sunday.

Fallout 4 wasteland survival guide part 1: basic tips

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 10, 2015 6:17 PM CST

After months and months of waiting, Fallout 4 is finally here. As with any massively open world created by Bethesda, Fallout 4's Commonwealth can be daunting in its scope. Fallout 4 is truly titanic in nearly every way and sometimes that can be pretty intimidating, especially when it's all brand new. Fear not, brave traveler! TweakTown has you covered. You can use our handy tips and hints guide to help point you towards the path of wasteland mastery.

Fallout 4 wasteland survival guide part 1: basic tips

One of the most important tips I can give you is to be totally mindful of how Perks and SPECIAL stats work. Fallout 4 makes some key changes to character progression, and some SPECIAL stats are more weighted than they used to be. All of them are important, but some of them have a more dramatic effect on earlier levels. In this section, I'll tell you what kinds of things you want to shoot toward depending on your style of play.

You don't have to have your character completely planned out from step one. Don't get yourself in a tizzy looking at all the perks and trying to maximize and plot out every aspect of your progression. This should be a more fluid, natural experience. That being said you need to have a general idea of what you want to do in the game. I've come to find that Agility is really important, so don't neglect it. Action Points determine the max sprinting rate, melee attacks, VATS and sneaking efficiency, which are pretty universal.

Sony finally kills off Betamax and MicroMV tape formats

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Nov 10, 2015 5:14 PM CST

After its introduction to the market 40 years ago and ultimate ousting by the inferior, but better supported and cheaper VHS format, the Sony corporation has finally announced it's removing the life support and sending it on its way to join dozens of other deceased video formats such as HD-DVD, VCD, D-VHS and Laserdisc in that little patch of heaven.

Despite ceasing production of Betamax recorders in 2002, Sony continued to produce tapes to satisfy the incredibly niche market for a further 13 years. Today, the company has announced that will come to an end along with support for the MicroMV digital video format, which was seen for a time as a miniature successor to the MiniDV video camera format.

We tip our hats to the fallen.

Unreal Engine 4 gets VR SLI support via NVIDIA GameWorks VR

Derek Strickland | Extended Reality (XR) | Nov 10, 2015 4:47 PM CST

At this year's VRX 2015 virtual reality conference, Epic Games announced it's teaming up with NVIDIA to fully support Team Green's new GameWorks VR suite. This means that Unreal Engine 4 developers will get a huge set of new tools to work with, including tapping the performance boon that is VR SLI. One of the biggest parts of this news, is that Multi-Res Shading can boost rendering speeds by up to 50%, which is GeForce specific, something AMD can't do right now.

Unreal Engine 4 gets VR SLI support via NVIDIA GameWorks VR

NVIDIA's GameWorks VR toolset is a new suite made up of libraries, API's and drivers aimed at optimizing VR performance. GameWorks VR is specifically designed to streamline the interactions between NVIDIA GPU's and VR hardware like the Oculus Rift in an effort to increase frame rates and push down latency.

GameWorks VR offers a number of beneficial upgrades to both game and hardware developers like Direct Mode, which improves headset compatibility, and Multi-Res Shading, which uses Maxwell's multi-projection architecture to improve render. Team Green's VR suite also supports VR SLI, which leverages the power of multiple NVIDIA GeForce GTX GPU's to "dramatically accelerate stereo rendering" by assigning a GPU to each eye. VR SLI also supports builds with more than two GeForce GTX GPU's as the raw graphical power is scaled to the headset using the GPU affinity API.
