Intel's next-gen Core architecture teased as Ocean Cove

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Apr 28, 2018 6:51 PM CDT

It might look like Intel has the CPU game in its hands, but Chipzilla was dealt a pretty big blow by delaying its 10nm node yet again, and now we're hearing about what is coming next, the next big thing that could see us with a truly next-gen leap in CPU architecture technology.

Intel's next-gen Core architecture teased as Ocean Cove

Intel has a job listing looking for a Senior CPU microarchitect that would join their Ocean Cove team in Hillsboro, Oregon where they would begin work on the next-gen Core architecture.

Ashraf Essa from The Motley Fool tweeted that Intel's next-gen Ocean Cove CPU core "comes after the core inside of ADL" which is the Alder Lake generation. This means we can expect the launch of Ocean Cove to take place sometime after 2020, and could arrive as the 11th generation Core family of CPUs from Intel.

Fortnite for the Nintendo Switch rumored announcement at E3

Jak Connor | Gaming | Apr 27, 2018 5:00 AM CDT

It really seems inevitable that at some stage we are going to see Fortnite debut to the Nintendo Switch, recent rumors have surfaced and suggested that this day could be sooner rather than later.

Fortnite for the Nintendo Switch rumored announcement at E3

The rumors have been sourced from a group of leakers that post on the Twitter account LeakyPandy. LeakyPandy did leak some information about the contents of Nintendo Direct before Nintendo went live, this could suggest that the Twitter account has some slight credibility.

The rumors are as follows: "After debating we have decided to release a portion of the Fortnite x Switch information we have - the statements we consider to be the most reliable. This could be part of Nintendo's E3 Showcase. The majority of the most interesting information about this is actually about Save the World. Nothing seems to point to Battle Royale being all that different on Switch. That goes for Cross-Play, it will be there too. Save the World, on the other hand, apparently got Nintendo's interest. One of our most trusted sources pointed to us that this game's version local Switch-to-Switch Save the World. Exclusive Nintendo IP related content is also being worked on exclusively for Save the World."

Fortnite made $223 million in March, 'king of battle royale'

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Apr 26, 2018 11:51 PM CDT

Fortnite is an unstoppable force that I think Epic Games didn't even imagine could get close to being, but they're enjoying the ride and handling the success incredibly well. But how much money did Fortnite make last month?

Fortnite made $223 million in March, 'king of battle royale'

$223 million. $223,000,000. Insane. Just 30 days and the free-to-play title rakes in $223 million, which is incredibly hard for most games to do over their lifetimes, Fortnite does in a month. It's unstoppable, and deservedly so - it's a phenomenon beyond words right now with no signs of stopping.

SuperData's latest report tells us that the game has overtaken PUBG as the "king of battle royale" in terms of revenue generated and monthly active users on all platforms. Their report reads: "It also hit the #1 spot by revenue on iOS in the United States in its launch month, and has the highest conversion rate of any free-to-play PC game in March. Oh and P.S. - Fortnite is now the largest free-to-play console game of all time, in revenue generated and monthly active users".

Epic: 'Battle. Adapt. Win' tease for Season 4 of Fortnite

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Apr 26, 2018 11:28 PM CDT

Fortnite players have been wondering WTF is going on with the meteor strike in the game, with everyone having a different opinion as they're bursting through the atmosphere and exploding into the ground.

Epic: 'Battle. Adapt. Win' tease for Season 4 of Fortnite

The developers of Fortnite are such trolls that they even built a "doomsday cult" hangout at the top of one of the buildings in the latest update to the game, just to have a laugh. But now that meteors are smashing into the ground, Fortnite players are up in arms about what is about to change.

We don't know what the meteors will do in Fortnite, with people thinking that the will blow up the Twisted Towers and change the map. Others think it could be an alien spaceship that might introduce new enemies, and other changes... while developer Epic Games has been virtually silent about it... until now.

Who knew that not building your own gaming PC in real life would be so much fun, with PC Building Simulator flying past 100,000 sales in the first month of it being released on Steam Early Access.

PC Building Simulator sells 100,000 copies in 30 days

The Irregular Corporation boss Claudiu Kiss is behind the game, with a viral demo last year racking up the 3rd most downloaded free Itchi.io title in 2017. The full game was released last month, with lots of press covering it and gamers loving it as it has a great attention to detail, and is fun to play.

Radeon Vega Instinct: refreshed 7nm Vega 20 hits AMD labs

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Apr 26, 2018 9:47 PM CDT

AMD has received one of their more exciting products in their hardware labs for testing, with a refreshed 7nm Vega 20 GPU that is expected to go into the new Radeon Instinct card that will arrive later this year.

Radeon Vega Instinct: refreshed 7nm Vega 20 hits AMD labs

Vega 20 on 7nm is nothing but a die shrink, so don't think because we're moving from Vega 10 to Vega 20 that the performance is doubled, or even improved that much. We should expect 5-10% more performance from a Vega 20-based card, with slightly lower power consumption.

We should expect AMD to detail its shift to 7nm on the Radeon graphics card side of things with refreshed Radeon RX cards later this year, with a tease of Navi at SIGGRAPH 2018 if all things continue going to plan for AMD.

Pokemon Switch RPG listed as 2018 or later

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 26, 2018 5:19 PM CDT

Announced at E3 2017, the Pokemon RPG for the Nintendo Switch was originally slated for release in 2018 but the game may miss its release target.

Pokemon Switch RPG listed as 2018 or later

Nintendo's latest financial earnings give key insight on the future of the company's software and hardware plans, but also allows gamers to gauge expectations on future game releases. One of the most anticipated Switch games is the Pokemon RPG that's supposed to launch this year, but Nintendo now lists it as "2018 or later". The other high profile first-party game Super Smash Bros. is locked in for 2018, whereas Metroid Prime 4 is still marked as TBD.

To get a better picture at what's going on with the Switch's games lineup I took a quick gander at Nintendo's internal Switch software forecasts for the current fiscal year. For FY2018 (April 1, 2018 - March 31, 2019) Nintendo expects to sell a whopping 100 million in combined digital and physical software for the console, representing a big 45% jump from FY2017's 68.97 million software sales units.

Nintendo sold 15 million Switch consoles in FY2017

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 26, 2018 4:17 PM CDT

Nintendo's recent yearly financials show strong growth across the board, and its recent Switch hybrid system continues to accelerate sales.

Nintendo sold 15 million Switch consoles in FY2017

Nintendo just posted up its earnings for the fiscal year ended March 2018 (Fiscal Year 2017) and the results are superb. The Japanese games-maker sold 15.05 million Switch units in the fiscal year, meeting its internal hardware target while pushing total cumulative Switch console sales to 17.79 million. A gander at quarterly results reveals that 2.92 million Switch consoles were sold in the fourth quarter period from Jan - March 2018, down about 60% from the previous holiday quarter.

This is just the beginning though: Nintendo expects to push 20 million Switch units throughout the FY2018 timeline (April 1, 2018 - March 31, 2019), strongly hinting that the company has ironed out any supply issues while also planning out a strong continued momentum for both first-party and third-party software. If Nintendo were to meet this goal it would put total Switch sales at 37.79 million in just two years' time.

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima to step down

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 26, 2018 3:38 PM CDT

Nintendo's current acting president Tatsumi Kimishima will step down to hand off the position to a younger company executive.

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima to step down

In an effort to better reach and understand a new generation of gamers, Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima will relinquish his position to 46-year-old Shuntaro Furukawa, Japanese website Nikkei reports. Mr. Furukawa has a long-standing 15-year history at Nintendo and helped plan out marketing for the Switch--a move that helped the console shift almost 18 million units to date.

Mr. Kimishima steps down on June 28, but will stay on in an advisory role, and Mr. Furukawa's appointment represents Nintendo's new shift towards younger management. Interestingly enough it appears Nintendo actually planned for Mr. Kimishima to be a temporary president until the Switch's hardware sales solidified, in which the mantle would pass to Mr. Furukawa.
