Streaming has consumed 80% of the US music market, was just 7% in 2010

Jak Connor | Software & Apps | Jan 1, 2020 2:27 AM CST

Music streaming has taken over the US music market. Organizations are now saying it accounts for 80% of the market, compared to only accounting for 7% back in 2010.

Streaming has consumed 80% of the US music market, was just 7% in 2010

The Recording Industry Association of America or RIAA for short has released some new decade long statistics onto their official Twitter page. The RIAA says that over the course of the decade, streaming has become the staple way of accessing music in the music market, surpassing physical media by a landslide.

The above image shows that back in 2010, physical music took the lions share of the market at 52%, digital downloads took 38%, and streaming only had 7%. Now, looking at the 2019 data, streaming has basically eaten physical music, reducing it down to just 9% of the market, while streaming sits strongly at 80%. The increase in streaming is no doubt a result of many more Americans now having a smartphone and downloading apps such as Spotify or Apple Music.

A supermassive black hole is creating gorgeous galactic fireworks

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Jan 1, 2020 1:55 AM CST

Have you ever seen galactic fireworks? They don't have anything to do with traditional fireworks that use paper, powder and fire. Instead, they use sonic booms and gas.

A supermassive black hole is creating gorgeous galactic fireworks

The above photo is of a galaxy in NGC 4258, it's quite similar to our Milky Way galaxy but instead it has two extra spiral arms that flow in X-ray, optical and radio light. A new study using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope revealed that at the heart of this galaxy a supermassive black hole could be spewing out high-energy particles that then heat up the disk of the galaxy, and create shock waves that are much like sonic booms.

NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory captured an image that showed many bubbles of heated gas that were equivalent to about 10 million suns. Astronomers observed these bubbles and concluded that gas that was originally in the disk of the galaxy had been heated and then catapulted out into different regions of space.

A next-generation Batman game should look as good as this 3D model

Jak Connor | Gaming | Jan 1, 2020 1:13 AM CST

If you are a fan of the Caped Crusader and also enjoy video games, you are no doubt after another great Batman title.

A next-generation Batman game should look as good as this 3D model

The above video released by Ruslan Gadzhiev showcases a real-time 3D game model of Christian Bale as The Batman from Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight movie trilogy. The render was created used Unreal Engine 4, and by knowing that we can see that if there were to be a new Batman game, Batman would have about the same amount of quality as this render.

While it can't be said that developers will be able to 100% implement this level of quality in a new Batman game, this still gives us a rough estimation of what Unreal Engine 4 is capable of when it comes to Batman. In the entirety of this article, I have provided some high-quality screenshots for your viewing pleasure.

Simulation results from 70 GPU's say Jupiter captures 'alien' comets

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Jan 1, 2020 12:44 AM CST

Astronomers are peering out into the black void and are wondering how space bodies (comets, asteroids) are interacting with our Sun and Jupiter.

Simulation results from 70 GPU's say Jupiter captures 'alien' comets

The scientists decided to simulate many different types of space bodies and watch how each of them interacted with the Sun and Jupiter as they approached them. The results were released in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society and revealed that in some cases of an object entering our solar system, Jupiter could alter the trajectory of the object enough that it becomes bound to our solar system.

Hands and Walter Dehnen of the University of Munich said, "We used an advanced code which runs on graphics processing units rather than traditional computer processors to enable us to simulate such a large number of objects in a short time. The simulations took two days in total using around 70 graphics cards, so roughly 140 days if we had only used one card and much, much longer if we had used a normal desktop computer processor."

A $399 PlayStation 5 will conquer next-gen

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 31, 2019 4:14 PM CST

Recent leaks show the Xbox Series X crushing the PlayStation 5 in raw GPU power, at least insofar as relative devkit specs. But a less powerful console could give Sony a major advantage: A $399 price tag.

A $399 PlayStation 5 will conquer next-gen

New reports show a clear discrepancy between next-gen console power. The leaks, which are based on devkit hardware, say the Xbox Series X sits at 12 TFLOP GPU clocked at a 1.7GHz frequency with a whopping 56 Navi Compute Units from AMD's new RDNA 2.0 architecture.

The PlayStation 5 conversely clocks in at 9.2 TFLOPs with only 36 Compute Units (the same as the PS4 Pro) at a 2GHz clock speed. With these numbers, the Xbox SX's GPU sports 33% more TFLOP performance and 55% more compute units. That's a sizable lead that should come with an equally sizable price tag.

Guild Wars developer ArenaNet to move towards console game development

Jak Connor | Gaming | Dec 31, 2019 4:07 AM CST

Earlier in the year, Guild Wars developer ArenaNet prepared for job layoffs/restructuring, and now it seems the development studio is preparing to get back on track with a new title.

Guild Wars developer ArenaNet to move towards console game development

ArenaNet stepped into the game development sphere with the extremely popular MMORPG Guild Wars. Following up on that title, ArenaNet then developed a sequel, Guild Wars 2, and while that title kicked off on popularity, it's lack of end-game content caused players to leave and find their way back to other MMORPG's. As you can see, ArenaNet has always been a single game development studio, but since the layoffs earlier this year, we haven't heard much about what the studio is doing.

Now, according to a new job listing, ArenaNet is searching for a new art director that will be working on an "unannounced third-person fantasy action console title". This is extremely interesting, as this would mark the first time ArenaNet has moved towards developing a game for consoles rather than PC. The job listing also doesn't mention anything about the game being an MMO, which could mean that the studio is moving away from the Guild Wars series and starting something brand new. We will have to keep our eyes on this.

Netflix's 'The Witcher' usurps The Mandalorian as most in-demand show

Jak Connor | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Dec 31, 2019 3:00 AM CST

A new report has come out regarding how popular The Witcher TV show really is, and this report indicates that The Witcher TV show is now the most in-demand TV show in the world.

Netflix's 'The Witcher' usurps The Mandalorian as most in-demand show

According to some new data figures from a data company Parrot Analytics, Netflix's The Witcher has taken first place from Disney Plus' The Mandalorian as the top global series. The data also indicates that The Witcher is now the second most popular Netflix series in the US, with Stranger Things leading the pack.

The Witcher arrived on Netflix on December 20th, and for the week ranging from December 22nd to 28th, the show pulled in 127 million demand expressions. This beat Disney's The Mandalorian, which had 115 million demand expressions in that same week. A Parrot Analytics representative said, "The Witcher's' immediate worldwide success highlights the impact that a binge-released series can have on driving audience demand."

Spider-Man 3 filming eats up Uncharted movie timeline, director leaves

Jak Connor | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Dec 31, 2019 2:09 AM CST

Just as you would be thinking that the Uncharted movie is gaining some production traction, it has taken another hit on the nose.

Spider-Man 3 filming eats up Uncharted movie timeline, director leaves

It wasn't that long ago that the Uncharted movie picked up a new director, this director was Travis Knight, the director behind Bumblebee. Unfortunately, according to sources close to Deadline, Knight has had to give up his position as the director of the movie due to lead actor Tom Hollands filming schedule.

Deadline says that Holland's filming schedule for the upcoming third Spider-Man film has created a bunch of problems. On a more positive note, the Uncharted cast will still be remaining the same, with Mark Walberg scheduled to play Nathan Drakes (Tom Holland) older ally, Victor Sully. Since there has been a director change and filming isn't on schedule, I wouldn't be counting on that December 2020 premier.

Ciri & Yennefer actresses attempt to copy Henry Cavill's Geralt voice

Jak Connor | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Dec 31, 2019 1:11 AM CST

If you have been tuning into The Witcher TV show, you would have noticed how much effort Henry Cavill has put into getting Geralt's raspy voice down. But what if the actresses of Ciri and Yennefer gave it a shot?

Ciri & Yennefer actresses attempt to copy Henry Cavill's Geralt voice

The above video has been posted on the official Twitter of Lauren S. Hissrich, the showrunner for Netflix's The Witcher. Hissrich has done a fantastic job of staying connected with her loyal fanbase, always posting updates on the shows progress, answering fans' questions etc. If you really enjoyed watching The Witcher TV show, I'd recommend going and following her personal Twitter for real-time updates.

On a more lighter and less information-based note, Hissrich just recently posted a video of actresses Freya Allan (Ciri) and Anya Chalotra (Yennefer) attempting to replicate Henry Cavill's Geralt of Rivia voice. Unfortunately, Cavill wins this one as Anya Chalotra is unable to even get down to that level of deepness and raspiness. She gave it more than a fair shot, though!

That strange, yet awesome Untitled Goose Game sold 1 million+ units

Sometimes a game doesn't have to be a massive open-world title with multiple endings, sometimes all it has to be is a goose.

That strange, yet awesome Untitled Goose Game sold 1 million+ units

Not too long ago, I wrote an article about why House House's Untitled Goose Game is one of the reasons you should love the internet. Without the internet, we would have never heard about this title, and honestly, what a shame that would be. It seems that over one million people were thinking a similar way and didn't want to miss out on the title as its sales have reached a point that has exceeded the developer's expectations.

According to Cabel, who worked on Untitled Goose Game as a publisher at Panic, Untitled Goose Game has surpassed the one million copies sold mark. Cabel took to his personal Twitter to thank everyone who purchased the game and hoped that they enjoyed their experience.

Apple iPhone for 2020 with 5G and no notch teased

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Dec 30, 2019 11:57 PM CST

Apple's new iPhone with 5G connectivity was meant to be coming in 2021, but it seems that timeline is being pushed forward in a big way.

Apple iPhone for 2020 with 5G and no notch teased

The folks at LetsGoDigital have made some designs based on new patents, which tease some exciting things from Apple and its new 2020 iPhone. One of which is the lack of a notch, which is really exciting.

The new iPhone 12 (if Apple doesn't have a new name for its 2020 iPhone) will lack a notch, which means it'll pack an in-display fingerprint sensor and under-display camera. This isn't new for Android smartphone, but it'll be a revolutionary step for Apple, pun intended.

AMD's high-end Navi GPU details: twice as fast as Radeon RX 5700 XT?!

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Dec 30, 2019 10:22 PM CST

AMD has been cooking up a kick-ass successor to Navi with a 2020 flagship GPU that is being referred to as Navi 21, with the second-generation RDNA family coming on the new 7nm+ process node.

AMD's high-end Navi GPU details: twice as fast as Radeon RX 5700 XT?!

Navi 21 will be a large GPU with new rumors pointing to it packing somewhere between 15-16 billion transistors, which makes it bigger than Vega 20 (13.2 billion) and Navi 10 (10.3 billion). But the bigger news here is that AMD's new flagship Navi 20-based graphics card would feature 12-16GB of GDDR6 memory on a much wider memory bus.

The new rumors have AMD possibly using a wider 384-bit or 512-bit memory interface, something that would enable much more memory bandwidth with GDDR6 memory. Previous rumors suggested AMD would tap higher-end HBM2E memory, packing between 16-32GB of framebuffer.

Xbox Series X will destroy PlayStation 5 with its MUCH faster GPU

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Dec 30, 2019 8:24 PM CST

It was close to a year ago that I wrote a story that Microsoft's next-gen Xbox console would feature an 8C/16T processor from AMD, and a new Navi-based GPU with 12 TFLOPs of performance -- and now, these specs are ringing true. We've also heard since day one that the new Xbox would beat the PlayStation 5.

Xbox Series X will destroy PlayStation 5 with its MUCH faster GPU

According to a new breakdown by the tech-focused folks at Digital Foundry, the next-gen Xbox Series X console will have 12 TFLOPs of performance -- kicking the ass of the 9.2 TFLOPs of Sony's new PlayStation 5 console. AMD is providing a semi-custom SoC that will be a two-part, one-two-punch Zen 2/RDNA2-based solution that will truly kick ass in both consoles -- but Microsoft will win that fight.

Sony is using an 'Oberon' chip in its PlayStation 5 that will have 36 compute units from the Navi GPU architecture running at 2GHz in "native" PS5 mode, as well as the use of super-fast GDDR6 with memory bandwidth of between 448GB/sec and 512GB/sec. Microsoft on the other hand will have 56 compute units from the Navi architecture with its 'Arden' chip, offering the same super-fast (and even faster) GDDR6 with up to 560GB/sec of memory bandwidth.

PlayStation 5 GPU: 9.2 TFLOPs with 36 custom Navi compute units

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Dec 30, 2019 7:35 PM CST

Just in time to round out 2019 we have some more specifications on Sony's next-gen PlayStation 5 console, but this time they're more GPU specific concentrating on the RDNA2-based custom Navi GPU that AMD made for both Sony and Microsoft.

PlayStation 5 GPU: 9.2 TFLOPs with 36 custom Navi compute units

Digital Foundry has analyzed a bunch of data and come to the conclusion that Sony is using a custom Navi GPU with 36 compute units, which will be clocked at around 2GHz. However, Sony will reportedly have 3 different GPU performance profiles -- with PS5 games pushing the Navi GPU to 2GHz -- but emulating previous-gen PlayStation games will see the GPU clocks doing some funky things.

This sees the PlayStation 5 and its custom Navi-based GPU rolling out with 9.2 TFLOPs of compute performance -- losing the next-gen console battle to Microsoft and it's new Xbox Series X which will have a 12 TFLOPs custom AMD solution. Sony will still use GDDR6 memory (and not HBM like the current insane rumors are leading some to believe). AMD's current flock of GDDR6-based cards in the Radeon RX 5700 series have 448GB/sec of memory bandwidth, but we could see Sony using some faster GDDR6 memory and seeing memory bandwidth hit 512GB/sec or so.

Check out this PC built in a glass pyramid

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 30, 2019 6:34 PM CST

Ever wanted to add a pointy end to your PC that makes it an instant conversation piece about the Illuminati and ancient Egyptians? Then look no further than this interesting build.

Check out this PC built in a glass pyramid

Redditor dessie84 built a striking-looking rig that's straight out of a 1970's sci-fi movie. The build uses the rather unique Azza Pyramid 804 case, an ATX chassis which comes with four panes of aluminum-tempered glass, a snazzy 120mm RGB fan, and enough space at the base for a full GPU and cooling setup.

The Azza Pyramid 804 was actually shown off at Computex 2019 and can stand upside down with a special four-leg stand that gives me intense anxiety just thinking about. Azza also makes a cube-shaped chassis similar to the HP Omen.

Sony: The future is coming at CES 2020

CES 2020 is right on the horizon and Sony will be at the show with a new suite of hardware, but we shouldn't expect a full-on PS5 reveal. Sony will probably reveal new consumer hardware like Xperia phones, cameras, and a new line of TVs (maybe it's new insane 8K CLEDIS wall TVs. The big PS5 announcement will be saved for a special PlayStation-centric event that's rumored to be held sometime in February.

PlayStation 5 GPU emulates PS4, PS4 Pro with special modes

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 30, 2019 4:10 PM CST

Sony's next-gen PlayStation 5 will ensure seamless and full native backward compatibility with PS4 games thanks to downscaling profiles built right into the Navi GPU.

PlayStation 5 GPU emulates PS4, PS4 Pro with special modes

According to massive new leaks verified by Eurogamer, the PS5 will indeed carry forward the full PlayStation 4 generation of games with complete games backward compatibility. This is made possible by two special modes built right into the silicon that downscale the PS5's GPU to current-gen performance targets, complete with lowered clock frequencies, RAM speeds, and Render Output units.

In essence, the PlayStation 5 was built from the ground up with backward compatibility in mind, similar to an iterative console. I've said right from the beginning that the new consoles will blur then line between next-gen and iterative cycles with both hardware and software.
