Mushkin's new Alpha series SSDs pack a huge 8TB with 3.3GB/sec speeds

Derek Strickland | Storage | Dec 8, 2020 3:04 PM CST

Storage-maker Muskin just launched a new line of high-performance SSDs that pack a whopping 8TB of storage.

Mushkin's new Alpha series SSDs pack a huge 8TB with 3.3GB/sec speeds

Mushkin's new Alpha series SSDs hits up to 3.3GB/sec sequential reads and 3GB/sec sequential write speeds, and comes in two massive 4TB and 8TB capacities. There's some huge price tags to match: the 4TB model costs $649 whereas the 8TB will set you back $1,299.

The Alpha series use Phison's powerful 12-channel E12 memory controller on PCIe Gen3x4, complete with QLC 3D NAND--possibly Micron's 96-layer QLC memory.

Gaming generated $90 billion for United States economy, ESA says

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 8, 2020 2:28 PM CST

According to a new report from the ESA, the video games market generated $90 billion in revenues in the United States in 2019 and contributed roughly 0.41% of the country's total GDP.

Gaming generated $90 billion for United States economy, ESA says

The ESA's new Video Games in the 21st Century: Economic Impact Report is jam-packed with interesting tidbits of info. The report focuses on video game trends in the United States, and confirms metrics like total earnings, number of workers/employees/developers.

The economic brief says video games made over $90 billion in the U.S., coupled with over $12 billion in tax revenues (companies like Activision-Blizzard and EA are adept at minimizing taxes, though). The report also says there's over 11,000 game development/publisher establishments in the United States, and most of the games jobs are in California (25,000+ as per geographical data from TEConomy).

ASRock unveils Radeon RX 6900 XT Phantom Gaming D OC graphics card

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Dec 8, 2020 7:21 AM CST

ASRock has just unveiled its new custom Radeon RX 6900 XT Phantom Gaming D 16G OC graphics card, the highest Big Navi card that is on offer.

ASRock unveils Radeon RX 6900 XT Phantom Gaming D OC graphics card

We don't know much about it, but it is a larger 2.5-slot card with a triple-fan cooler -- and should be cooler than the reference Radeon RX 6900 XT that reviews will go live in in the next hour. We should see clock speeds 200-300MHz higher than the reference card, something you'll be able to see on my review here on TweakTown today.

ASRock will require 3 x 8-pin PCIe power connectors, which is up from the 2 x 8-pin PCIe power connectors on the reference Radeon RX 6900 XT. We have the Phantom Gaming 3X Cooling System taking care of things, with ARGB lighting providing some style. There's no details on GPU clocks just yet.

ASUS teases custom TUF GAMING Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics card

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Dec 8, 2020 6:59 AM CST

We first thought it wasn't going to happen -- then it was rumored, then it was kinda like 'yes they're coming' -- and now we're at the stage of 'yes, they're really coming'.

ASUS teases custom TUF GAMING Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics card

ASUS is the first to unveil a custom Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics card, with its new TUF GAMING Radeon RX 6900 XT rolling out with a huge 2.9-slot triple-fan design. I'm a huge fan of the new TUF GAMING cards with an upcoming review on the RTX 3090 version of it and it being one of my favorite cards of the year.

We should expect some factory overclocking out of the ASUS TUF GAMING RX 6900 XT, but we won't know how much until later. It looks identical to the ASUS TUF GAMING RTX 3090, and that isn't a bad thing -- I've got one of my shots of that for you to check out below:

Cyberpunk 2077 review round up, read them all here in one spot

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Dec 7, 2020 10:28 PM CST

Cyberpunk 2077 reviews are out and they're a bit hit-and-miss so far -- some claiming it is amazing, but it is filled with a bunch of bugs, the story line isn't up to scratch, the first-person mechanics are clunky, and so much more.

Cyberpunk 2077 review round up, read them all here in one spot

CD PROJEKT RED has one of the most visually-striking games of 2020, filled with NVIDIA RTX graphics technologies, and so much more with Cyberpunk 2077. You will need a GeForce RTX 3090 for anything near 4K 60FPS but I will be doing a myriad of testing (right up to 8K and UltraWide 21:9 monitors) once Cyberpunk 2077 drops.

Cyberpunk 2077 early performance numbers: yeah, it's the new Crysis

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Dec 7, 2020 8:26 PM CST

Cyberpunk 2077 is nearly here and now we have an early look, but this is nowhere near final, at the performance of CD PROJEKT RED's new masterpiece if early reviews are anything to go by.

Cyberpunk 2077 early performance numbers: yeah, it's the new Crysis

NVIDIA technologies are throughout Cyberpunk 2077 with ray tracing and DLSS at launch, while support for AMD FidelityFX Super-Resolution for RDNA 2-based Radeon RX 6000 series in the future. Tom's Hardware has benchmarked an early release of Cyberpunk 2077 -- which is an early version of the code, as explained by GamersNexus:

So the DRM on Cyberpunk 2077 for reviewers is specific and GamersNexus says is "known to reduce performance". This will "not be active on launch day, therefore any testing published today will not accurately reflect launch performance. CDPR warned us of this, so we are waiting for launch day".

Thieves steal 40 boxes worth of GeForce RTX 3090s, valued at $340,000

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Dec 7, 2020 7:33 PM CST

There are no GeForce RTX 3090 graphics cards on shelves to begin with, but now there are 40 boxes less of them that will be sent out to retailers worldwide to sell to gamers.

Thieves steal 40 boxes worth of GeForce RTX 3090s, valued at $340,000

Thieves have stolen $340,000 worth of new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 graphics cards, with 40 boxes stolen from an MSI factory in China. This is on top of the recent MSI factory fire, and the sudden death of their CEO earlier this year -- with around 220 graphics cards inside of those 40 boxes.

It seems as though an MSI insider is most likely behind the theft, with MSI offering a $15,000 reward for someone who steps forward with information on the theft.

Sony: Supporting PS4 and PS5 at the same time is 'rational'

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 7, 2020 6:15 PM CST

A bit ago Sony said it "believed in generations." That belief isn't strong enough to completely wipe out the PS4--at least not yet.

Sony: Supporting PS4 and PS5 at the same time is 'rational'

Sony execs have said a lot of somewhat-contradictory things about PlayStation. Back in 2017, then-PlayStation boss Shawn Layden hinted the PS5 would be a true next-gen leap. Then more recently in May, PS boss Jim Ryan said Sony "believes in generations." In July 2020, Sony's Eric Lempel said "next-gen experiences require next-gen hardware".

Despite these comments, Sony isn't ready to give up on the PS4. In fact, Sony will support the PS4 will new game releases until 2023. That means some new first-party games will release both on PS4 and PS5, including Spider-Man Miles Morales and Horizon Forbidden West.

Square Enix's new Project Athia RPG won't be on Xbox for 2 years

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 7, 2020 5:35 PM CST

Sony continues grabbing timed exclusivity for Square Enix RPGs. First it was Final Fantasy VII, now it's a new action IP.

Square Enix's new Project Athia RPG won't be on Xbox for 2 years

Sony's new PS5 games trailer confirmed some interesting news. Gran Turismo 7 will be exclusive to PS5, and Sony has paid for a huge 2-year console exclusivity deal with Project Athia. Square Enix's big new RPG won't be on Xbox for at least two years:

"In development for PS5. Also available on PC. Not available on other consoles until at least 24 months after release date," the trailer says. We already knew Project Athia was PlayStation timed exclusive, but we didn't know for how long. Usually this kind of marketing deal lasts for 6 months to 1 year, not 2 years.

Halo: Infinite Spring 2021 release possibly leaked by mocap actor

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 7, 2020 4:49 PM CST

Master Chief motion capture actor Bruce Thomas says Halo: Infinite will launch in Spring 2021. Could it get delayed again?

Halo: Infinite Spring 2021 release possibly leaked by mocap actor

Halo: Infinite might be in rough shape right now. Infinite's recent gameplay footage received lots of criticism, and 343i is having to optimize on five separate Xbox consoles with varying power. There's also PC to optimize for, too. It's no surprise Infinite was delayed indefinitely--343i needs all the time they can get.

According to Bruce Thomas, who's played Master Chief in Halo 4, Halo 5, and Halo: Infinite, the game's mocap is wrapped up and a release could happen in Spring 2021. "I started Halo 4, did Halo 5 as well, and we have wrapped up Infinite--I believe, unless we're going to try and do some more as COVID comes to a halt. But as far as I know it's in the can and ready to go for next spring."

Surprise: Gran Turismo 7 isn't coming to PS4, is exclusive to PS5

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 7, 2020 4:17 PM CST

A new PS5 ad reiterates Gran Turismo 7's next-gen exclusivity, confirming the game won't be coming to PS4.

Surprise: Gran Turismo 7 isn't coming to PS4, is exclusive to PS5

Although Sony will support the PS4 until 2023 with simultaneous cross-gen releases, the PS5 will still get exclusive titles. According to a new game teaser, Gran Turismo 7 will be one such exclusive. The racing game will only be available on PS5 in 2021, and won't release on PS4.

PS5 exclusivity for this game makes a lot of sense on Sony's part. Gran Turismo 7 was billed as a next-gen spectacle that leverages the full might of the PlayStation 5, including 4K 60FPS performance and ray-traced visuals. The idea is to let Polyphony flex the PS5's horsepower without having to also build a game for the vastly-outdated PS4.

Pre-loads for Cyberpunk 2077 are now live on GOG.com at the time of writing, but will also be available later today on Steam and the Epic Games Store. Cyberpunk 2077 requires at least 70GB of install space on PC, and there's probably a hefty day-one patch and optional texture downloads for gamers with high-end RTX 3000 series cards. Check below for a map of game launch time zones and PC spec requirements.

Last of Us II writer Neil Druckmann is now co-president of Naughty Dog

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 7, 2020 3:09 PM CST

After The Last of Us Part II's landmark success, Naughty Dog has promoted Neil Druckmann to co-president.

Last of Us II writer Neil Druckmann is now co-president of Naughty Dog

Neil Druckmann has gained lots of momentum at Naughty Dog in the last 9 years. The dev went from helping design Uncharted to leading The Last of Us' design team, and then was conscripted to help bring Uncharted 4 to life after Amy Hennig left the studio. Druckmann became Naughty Dog's vice-president soon after, and could one day take over the full mantle of president. The studio's fleet of big PlayStation exclusive hits stand as milestones in Druckmann's career.

Right now Druckmann leads Naughty Dog alongside Evan Wells, and Alison Mori (ex-director of operations) and Christian Gyrling (ex-co-director of programming) will take on roles as joint vice presidents. The studio is currently working on the multiplayer component of The last of Us Part II.

Intel Core i9-11900K spotted on new benchmark, and yep, still on 14nm

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Dec 6, 2020 10:27 PM CST

Intel's next-gen Core i9-11900K processor has surfaced online, being found in an in-game benchmark run of Ashes of the Singularity.

Intel Core i9-11900K spotted on new benchmark, and yep, still on 14nm

The benchmark run of the Core i9-11900K is the first we've seen so far, posted by TUM_APISAK -- with Intel's new Core i9-11900K spotted running at 3.5GHz -- and is setup with NVIDIA's new GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card and 32GB of RAM. The system scores 64FPS at 1080p and 62FPS at 1440p -- not that great.

AMD's just-released Zen 3-powered Ryzen 9 5950X smashes that 1080p score with 70FPS, so expect Intel to be in a very questionable position once the new 11th Gen Core CPUs launch in Q1 2021 -- and I don't think that position will be changing for the entire year... AMD will continue to pummel throughout 2021.

CDPR: if you buy Cyberpunk 2077 on GOG, we get 100% of the sales

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Dec 6, 2020 9:21 PM CST

CD PROJEKT RED has reminded gamers that if they buy the game from GOG.com then they, the developer, will take 100% of the sales -- versus taking just 70% from other platforms.

CDPR: if you buy Cyberpunk 2077 on GOG, we get 100% of the sales

In a new tweet the team said that if you purchase Cyberpunk 2077 through GOG.com then they will get all of the sales, which is what a lot of gamers like to support. Other platofrms like Steam, Xbox, PlayStation -- even Google, Apple, and others -- take 30% at times. This means CDPR takes 70% from those platforms, but on GOG.com they get 100%.

Not only that, but if you pre-order Cyberpunk 2077 before December 10 then you will also get a 30% code for official merchandise on the CD PROJEKT RED store. That is a great bonus, and a very nice incentive to buy the game from GOG over other platforms.

US viewers can watch a ton of James Bond movies for free on YouTube

Anthony Garreffa | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Dec 6, 2020 8:26 PM CST

If you're stuck at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, or settling in for the holidays -- then you'll be glad to know that you can watch the first 19 movies in the James Bond franchise for free right now.

US viewers can watch a ton of James Bond movies for free on YouTube

Out of nowhere, the first 19 James Bond movies have been bundled into YouTube's "Free to Watch" section in the US. This means only US viewers can watch a bunch of different James Bond movies -- pretty much every single one without Daniel Craig -- for free right now.

You can go back and watch Pierce Brosnan in Goldeneye, living out the nostalgia of that movie and memories of playing Goldeneye 007 on the Nintendo 64. You could go back further and watch the older James Bond movies with Sean Connery in them as well, but if you want some of the newer James Bond movies starring Daniel Craig -- they aren't included.

AMD reportedly says YES to custom Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics cards

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Dec 6, 2020 12:27 AM CST

AMD has successfully launched its new Radeon RX 6800 XT and Radeon RX 6800 -- but now it's time for the Biggest Navi graphics card: the Radeon RX 6900 XT.

AMD reportedly says YES to custom Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics cards

The new Radeon RX 6900 XT launches on December 8 for $999 in reference form, but the confirmation on custom AIB models of the RX 6900 XT wasn't confirmed. It was rumored, but now it is getting more confirmed closer to the RX 6900 XT launch Overclockers.ru reporting custom RX 6900 XTs have been given the A-OK by AMD.

It appears AMD has so very few Navi 21 GPUs to put into Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics cards, that it doesn't want to announce custom RX 6900 XT cards right now. It looks like we'll be waiting until 2021 for custom Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics cards -- and I'm sure AMD doesn't want to promise more RX 6900 XTs when I'm sure there's going to be so very little of them as it is.
