Fortnite's mysterious rocket launches, tears the atmosphere

| Jul 1, 2018 10:38 PM CDT

The world of Fortnite is an ever-changing one, with Epic Games trolling players with a rocket that has sat on the map and a countdown clock that has finally reached zero. Sirens went off, and a launch happened...

Fortnite's mysterious rocket launches, tears the atmosphere

Once the rocket reached its peak, something broke away from the rocket and crashed into the Earth. Early reports of this stated it was a smaller ship that flew across the sky and around the area, blasting through the sky and then leaving a "tear" in the atmosphere. Other people reported seeing two ships, but we have no idea for sure.

Epic knows how to throw an in-game event in Fortnite, with a world that is constantly under the scrutiny of its fans. Fortnite is awesome, and I'm sure the fun is only just beginning.

Todd Howard: Fallout 5 will be focused on single player

| Jul 1, 2018 9:30 PM CDT

We know a heap about Fallout 76 and its multiplayer goodness that it'll deliver, but what about a new single-player focused Fallout?

Todd Howard: Fallout 5 will be focused on single player

That's something Bethesda Game Studios executive producer Todd Howard discussed after securing the Industry Legend award at this year's Gamelab. German website GameStar interviewed Howard, who talked about the issues with crossplay in Fallout 76, but also talked about the potential of Fallout 5.

Howard talked about the possibility of multiplayer being injected into future Bethesda franchises, where he said: "For those games, we want to keep them as single player. That is what our focus is going to be. If they have some social aspect we haven't designed yet, you'll see. But we treat each of them each as their own thing".

Halo TV show ordered by Showtime, coming in early 2019

| Jun 30, 2018 6:26 PM CDT

The Halo series has secured a big venue for its television debut.

Halo TV show ordered by Showtime, coming in early 2019

As a big Halo fan I was both elated and concerned when Microsoft announced the Halo TV series 5 years ago. So many possibilities ran through my mind--the franchise is rich with interesting paths--but with 343 Industries at the helm things could be very different. And recent news of the Halo TV series finally grabbing a network brings back those old feelings.

Microsoft recently announced that its live-action Halo television adaptation will get a 10-episode run on Showtime. The series, which is due out by "early 2019," will have one-hour episodes and should follow the Human-Covenant war but no details on an exact timeframe have been announced. Thankfully the show isn't going to be another smaller-scale project like Forward Unto Dawn or the awful Nightfall, but a fully-fledged series backed by CBS.

Cyberpunk 2077 is still heavy in development

| Jun 27, 2018 6:55 PM CDT

Although Cyberpunk 2077 got an official trailer and a closed-doors demo, the game is far from finished.

Cyberpunk 2077 is still heavy in development

It turns out that CD Projekt RED has a very good reason for not showing off that famed Cyberpunk 2077 behind-the-curtain gameplay demo: the build is actually pre-alpha. According to company president Adam Kicinski, this is just a taster sampling of what CDPR has in store and doesn't represent the final game.

In a recent interview Polish website Bankier asked if the closed-doors gameplay was an alpha build, in which Kicinski replied: "No, earlier. Therefore, we show the game behind closed doors - this is not the final quality yet. This is the most polished part of the game we have now, prepared in some sense to show it to people outside the company."

PUBG Corp kills Fortnite lawsuit

| Jun 27, 2018 6:09 PM CDT

The PUBG vs Fortnite lawsuit saga has ended (for now?).

PUBG Corp kills Fortnite lawsuit

PUBG Corp, the company made specifically to wrangle the smash-hit battle royale game PUBG, has terminated its lawsuit against Epic Games, Bloomberg reports. A month ago Bluehole's subsidiary filed a lawsuit in South Korean courts alleging that Epic's Fortnite game infringed on various copyrights, including UI and other in-game features. The suit has now been withdrawn in South Korean courts.

Although PUBG has sold over 44 million copies on console and PC, Fortnite has enjoyed a massive surge in success in recent months thanks to its free-to-play accessibility on all platforms and strong engagement strategies. PUBG Corp originally took issues with Fortnite back in January by commenting on its similarities, which drew the ire of the gaming community who saw it as a sign of jealousy.

Originally, the plans was for an 'Adult Only' patch which then changed to 'Agony Unrated.' Both ideas have further gone down the toilet, as Madmind Studios have said that they are having to cancel the project due to the company "struggling with financial problems. Due to technical and legal reasons, Madmind must cancel the development of Agony Unrated."

On a positive note though, the developer has said they are going to be releasing a new patch for Agony, it will be improving the lighting system and fixing numerous other bugs. To visit the official Steam post check it out here.

Blizzard acquires patent for Overwatch 'Play of the Game'

| Jun 27, 2018 1:00 AM CDT

One of the most iconic things about Overwatch has to be the 'play of the game' at the end of a match, luckily Blizzard has finally claimed it as theirs with a new patent.

Blizzard acquires patent for Overwatch 'Play of the Game'

Back in December 2016, Blizzard submitted this detailed patent claiming rights over the algorithm that scrapes the event log at the end of the game. This patent describes different 'play of the game' categories such as sharpshooter or life saver, each of the categories is represented by a score judged from a specific set of criteria calculated by the algorithm.

Taking the sharpshooter category as an example, numerous factors need to be considered in order to be rewarded with the most accurate 'play of the game.' Some of these factors include the range of the shot considering "A sniper character generally has an extremely long range and therefore the distance factor may be weighed less heavily when determining the sharpshooter score for a sniper shot. In addition, certain factors may be weighted higher than others due to drastically increasing the difficulty of the shots, such as shots where the player, the enemy, or both are airborne."

Overwatch update lets you endorse kick ass teammates

| Jun 26, 2018 9:46 PM CDT

Seriously, there is nothing worse than a crappy teammate who doesn't join the team voice chat in Overwatch and then does a crappy job at their position in the game, losing that precious SR. Well, the latest update to Overwatch should do a great job at escaping that crap.

Overwatch update lets you endorse kick ass teammates

Blizzard has introduced their new Endorsements system for Overwatch, which is similar to the Honor system in League of Legends, where you'll receive additional XP if players endorce your great teamwork. There are five Endorsement levels to work through, with rewards the entire way. As a Mercy main, I might finally feel special at the end of a round after I've healed my team by 20-25K. Yay!

Better than that, is that you shouldn't get stuck with a badly composed team with Blizzard offering up a new Looking For Group option that will let you find a team with your own options. This will include options for specific roles, overall team composition, and Endorsement levels. You can merge with other groups as well, so you shouldn't be stuck with some noob who drags your SR down.

Fortnite's new Playground: the next big change for Fortnite

| Jun 26, 2018 7:30 PM CDT

Fortnite almost reinvented itself with its Battle Royale mode, and it seems Epic Games is about to do it again with the new update to Fortnite with Playground.

Fortnite's new Playground: the next big change for Fortnite

Playground sounds exactly like you'd expect, it'll be a place where you and your friends will load into a private island where you can do whatever you want. Want to practice new weapons? Sure. Need to practice your building skills? Go for it. There's no one in that server but you and your friends.

Since there won't be any time restrictions in Fortnite's new Playground mode, the buildings and structures created should be wondrous. We could be looking at some Minecraft-level stuff here, so I'm expecting some weird and whacky creations to show up on YouTube and Twitch in the coming months.

What if next-gen Xbox family includes a streaming-only box?

| Jun 26, 2018 5:59 PM CDT

Microsoft is working on a new family of consoles (codenamed Scarlett), but what if the hardware ring includes a streaming-only set top box?

What if next-gen Xbox family includes a streaming-only box?

Xbox division head Phil Spencer confirmed two major things at E3 2018 outside of games: multiple Xbox consoles are in development, and that Microsoft wants to bring games to "anyone, anywhere" with a new game streaming initiative. Both of these are likely still in fledgling states as the company ramps up technology plans as well as tweaking its online cloud infrastructure, so it's too soon to tell on either front. But combining Microsoft's current gaming business model with past reports leads to some interesting guesses. What if the Scarlett family includes a low-cost Xbox Mini?

Way back in 2016, Windows Central reported that Microsoft was testing streaming-only devices that would play Xbox games and run Windows 10 UWP apps. Codenamed Project Hobart, the devices would come in two flavors: an HDMI stick and a set-top box. The idea was to make low-cost devices that could play games, run apps, and serve as a TV-based multimedia inlet to consume content.

Xbox Game Pass actually sparks full game sales

| Jun 26, 2018 4:16 PM CDT

Xbox Game Pass subscribers are actually buying more games--something that surprised Microsoft's gaming head Phil Spencer.

Xbox Game Pass actually sparks full game sales

We've known for a while now that Xbox is no longer a console. Instead it's a service that bridges multiple devices like Xbox consoles and Windows PCs (and soon smartphones via streaming) with a deep, engagement-driven web of game sales, online content, and subscriptions all tied neatly together with Xbox LIVE. Microsoft has laid the foundations for a decades-long, billion-dollar strategy, and subscriptions like Xbox Game Pass are paving the way for the future. The real beauty of this strategy is that everything bleeds into one another to make a surprisingly mutualistic synergy.

For example, Microsoft's successful $10 a month Xbox Game Pass subscription is actually pushing more game sales.
