'MacGyver' TV reboot gets first trailer

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Aug 17, 2016 9:45 PM CDT

Last year we bought you the news that the CBS Network were pursuing a TV reboot for the classic 80's series 'MacGyver', and they've delivered. Well, they've delivered something, but I'm not sure it's MacGyver!

Starring Lucas Till in the role made famous by Richard Dean Anderson, the new series finds MacGyver as the creator of a "clandestine organization within the U.S. government where he uses his extraordinary talent for unconventional problem solving and vast scientific knowledge to save lives".

The series is set to hit screens later this year.

Mass Effect Remastered could be announced soon

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 17, 2016 9:32 PM CDT

Gamescom 2016 - After what has felt like years of Mass Effect not being remastered, it looks like EA could be rethinking that remastering some of its older games on new consoles and the PC, might actually be a good thing.

EA COO Peter Moore said a year ago that remastering games "feels like pushing stuff out because you've run out of ideas," and that his company didn't have the time for remastering games. Moore added: "We don't do that here. I don't think that's ever been in our culture". Fast forward a year and Gamescom 2016 is now here with EA Studios Executive Vice President, Patrick Soderlund saying that the Mass Effect trilogy might eventually be remastered.

Speaking with Game Informer, Soderlund said: "What's changed is that there is proof in the market that people want it, maybe more than there was when we spoke. There were some that did it before, but I think there is even more clear evidence that this is something that people really want. The honest answer is that we are absolutely actively looking at it. I can't announce anything today, but you can expect us most likely to follow our fellow partners in Activision and other companies that have done this successfully".

Gamescom 2016 - Ubisoft has announced that the closed alpha of For Honor will take place between September 15 and 18, where you can sign up on the game's official website. Ubisoft has said that the PC version of For Honor will be developed by Blue Byte, which worked on DLC content for Rainbow Six: Siege.

The company also detailed For Honor's roster of 12 playable heroes, which are split into three factions: Knight, Viking, and Samurai. Ubisoft explains: "each feature four true elite warriors, capable of making a major difference on the battlefield," continuing with "For Honor embarks players in the chaos, fury and brutality of ruthless, visceral close-quarter combat featuring the brutal Vikings, the deadly Knights and the cold-blooded Samurai. In each faction, players will be able to choose among four different types of Heroes".

Support for DirectX 12 in Deus Ex delayed two weeks

Sean Ridgeley | Gaming | Aug 17, 2016 7:03 PM CDT

Though originally planned to include DirectX 12 support at launch, developer Nixxes Software says it won't be quite ready come August 23. Rather, you'll have to wait a couple weeks.

"We have some extra work and optimizations to do for DX12, and we need more time to ensure we deliver a compelling experience," it writes. "Our teams are working hard to complete the final push required here though, and we expect to release DX12 support on the week of September 5th!"

Mankind Divided isn't the only high profile recent game to launch without the benefits of the new API. As such, it's not unreasonable to venture the 'closer to the metal' design may be giving some programmers trouble and that it will take time before PC developers are fully accustomed.

Our future is without console generations says Microsoft

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 17, 2016 6:34 PM CDT

Microsoft is betting pretty solidly on the end of not just the current console generation, but console generations in general.

Our future is without console generations says Microsoft

With its new 4K-ready "monster" Project Scorpio console, Microsoft hopes to usher in a new era of iterative hardware to the gaming world. Redmond has a vision where consoles are upgrade-able not unlike PCs, where the past, present, and future merge to form one continuous solid line of inter-compatibility.

"I think [this is the last console generation] ... For us, we think the future is without console generations, we think that the ability to build a library, a community, to be able to iterate with the hardware, we're making a pretty big bet on that with Project Scorpio. We're basically saying 'this isn't a new generation, everything you have continues forward and it works.' We think of this as a family of devices," Xbox exec Aaron Greenberg said in an interview with Engadget.

Battlefield 1's massive 64-player battle footage debuts

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 17, 2016 5:33 PM CDT

Gamescom 2016 - If there's something I wanted to see from Gamescom 2016, it was anything on Battlefield 1, and well - we've got it. EA and DICE teased a 64-player match of Battlefield 1, with two teams of 32 duking it out in the World War 1 era first-person shooter.

The footage was pulled, but VG247 Turkey managed to get it back up for your viewing pleasure. In the footage, we can see that there are two teams of 32 playing on the Sinai Desert map, and a greater look at horseback riding and how the horse will handle throughout the environment, and in the battles. The horses actually have a higher health gauge than the player, so if you die or are shot off of the horse, another player can jump onto the horse and keep riding.

Battlefield 1's weapons get detailed in the video, as well as some pretty crazy action in the Conquest mode. The Battlefield 1 beta starts on August 31 on the PC, Xbox One and PS4 while the full game will be released on October 21.

Ford says it will have a fully autonomous car in 2021

Anthony Garreffa | Electric Vehicles & Cars | Aug 17, 2016 4:27 PM CDT

Ford has announced plans to have a fully autonomous car on the road by 2021, which will be used in a ride sharing service. Ford CEO Mark Fields said that autonomous cars will be just as important to Ford as the assembly line. The company says there will be no steering wheel, no gas or brake pedals will be found in the fully autonomous car.

Fields said: "We're designing the first generation of autonomous vehicles specifically for ride sharing and ride hailing", and elaborated during the event "today we're no longer just an auto company, we're also a mobility company." Ford isn't putting all of its focus into autonomous cars, with its regular vehicles still being manufactured and sold, instead the company is seeing the value in the future of autonomous cars and is deciding to put large resources into it.

Ford CTO Raj Nair said that instead of the company overthinking the smaller steps into autonomous technology and instead head first, "We abandoned the stepping stones of driver assist technologies and decided to take the full leap to fully autonomous," explains Nair. He added that Ford will have three times its development fleet by the end of the year, from 10 to 30 vehicles, to 90 vehicles in the next year.

Battlefield 1 will feature large-scale Conquest only

Sean Ridgeley | Gaming | Aug 17, 2016 4:22 PM CDT

Gamescom 2016 - Battlefield 1 design director, grandfather of the Battlefield franchise, and all around nice guy Lars Gustavsson answered fan questions about his next game at Gamescom today.

One of the more interesting answers pertains to Conquest mode: this go round, he says, the game will just have a singular, large-scale Conquest mode, since the team is no longer limited by the hardware in the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

"To answer whether or not we'll do Conquest large or Conquest small, the answer is that we'll do more of what you think as Conquest large for Battlefield 1. The main reason here is that with the power of with the new generation of consoles and PC we are not forced any more to scale them between the different platforms. So...large Conquest is the one Conquest type we'll have," Lars said.

Resident Evil 7's new trailer sets the atmosphere

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 17, 2016 3:27 PM CDT

Gamescom 2016 - Capcom have come out showing a new gameplay trailer for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which uses a found-footage style to set the atmosphere up for the creepy as hell world.

The new trailer also has some gameplay footage from Resident Evil 7 itself, and not like the Beginning Hour teaser which was more of a proof of concept. If you think the footage looks too fuzzy, Capcom reassures that it's for the effect they were going for, to emulate the tapes that players find when exploring throughout the game. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard will not look like this when you're playing, but this really does feel like some odd Blair Witch style video game footage, and I'm loving it.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard will be released for the PC, Xbox One and PS4 as well as the PlayStation VR in January 2017. We've got some more screenshots below.

Twitch acquiring Curse for undisclosed sum

Sean Ridgeley | Business, Financial & Legal | Aug 17, 2016 2:54 PM CDT

Twitch is all set to acquire Curse, the company behind the Curse client, which offers streaming tools, text and voice chat, an in-game overlay, and various other functions. As Twitch is itself owned by Amazon, this will make Curse a subsidiary of a subsidiary.

Logic says Twitch will likely use the acquisition to offer its own client to streamers, as opposed to now where users are required to use external programs like Xsplit, OBS, and so on in order to stream. I'd expect integrated live chat and other functionality as well.

"We've long been fans of Curse, which is an innovator in the games industry with a strong culture built around its offerings-from Curse Voice and Curse Client to Gamepedia," said Emmett Shear, CEO of Twitch. "While it's still early days for Twitch and Curse, we're kindred spirits in many ways and are looking forward to working together to enhance our users' gaming experience."

Watch Dogs 2 footage shows seamless multiplayer world

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 17, 2016 2:30 PM CDT

Gamescom 2016 - Ubisoft debuted some Watch Dogs 2 footage during Gamescom 2016, with the first look at the multiplayer side of the successor to the lukewarm, original Watch Dogs. It seems as though Watch Dogs 2 is a much more complete, and better thought out game than its predecessor.

The trailer above shows the dynamic drop-in/drop-out cooperative and competitive multiplayer setting of Watch Dogs 2 where you can verse rival hackers to invade worlds in the new Bounty Hunt game mode. Bounty seekers can be seen while they're on the hunt, with bounty hunters able to track them down easier for a showdown.

Watch Dogs 2 drops on November 16, 2016 on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Check here for everything you need to know about the fresh new sequel.

Battlefield 1's new Sinai map gets some 64-player chaos

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 17, 2016 1:12 PM CDT

Gamescom 2016 - The United Kingdom face off against the Ottoman Empire in Battlefield 1's new 64-player desert-based Sinai map.

Battlefield 1's new Sinai map gets some 64-player chaos

DICE has made it clear that Battlefield 1 is all about all-out war, and the latest bit of footage from Gamescom exemplifies this perfectly. We've already seen some pretty insane 64-player battles at E3 2016, and now we get a glimpse of what the game's new Sinai map has to offer.

Sadly the gameplay is a bit fuzzy, but it's still a nice sampling of epic-scale world-shattering chaos. We see Ottomans charging into battle on horseback with sabers raised high, biplanes raining down bullets from the skies, and just general explosive havoc. Soon you'll be able to get in on the action when Battlefield 1's open beta launches on August 30, but the beta test is only limited to 24-players max with two modes: Conquest and Rush.

Retro NES games played as 3D holograms via HoloLens

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 17, 2016 12:20 PM CDT

A developer uses Microsoft's HoloLens to play 3D hologrammatic versions of legendary NES games like Super Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and Tetris.

Retro NES games played as 3D holograms via HoloLens

Technology is pretty amazing. And by that I mean humanity has finally found a way to use holograms to play old-school NES games. Andrew Peterson has ported his amazing N3S emulator, which transforms 2D NES games into amazing 3D creations, over to Microsoft's HoloLens to show us a new dimension of retro magic: playing 3D Nintendo games in augmented reality spaces via fancy holograms.

The result is just amazing, and I hope to see AR tech take take off and become more consumer accessible in the near future. I mean, who wouldn't want to play these games as 3D holograms? Sure you won't have AR robots flying at you, but you'll be able to use any space as your personal NES nerd cave.

Apple to begin work on an R&D center in China this year

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Aug 17, 2016 11:35 AM CDT

Apple has announced it has plans to build a new R&D center in China by the end of this year, and while the company didn't elaborate on the plans, it's part of an "overall increased investment in Apple's second-largest market," reports Engadget.

China regulators haven't been happy with large investments in companies like local ridesharing giant Didi Chuxing merging with Uber in a $35 billion deal, who have been outright banning services, and aren't sold on large American companies coming in and doing big business in their country. Apple is trying something new here with the R&D center plans for China, where it can show the country that it can create jobs in China, and discover new talent in the country.

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi is known as the 'Apple of China' so you can just imagine that they won't be pleased with this news, especially with the IDC estimating that Xiaomi had a 38.4% year-over-year decline in smartphone shipments.

Metal Gear Survive announced, 4-player coop game

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 17, 2016 10:22 AM CDT

Gamescom 2016 - I didn't expect to see Konami announce a new game in its Metal Gear franchise so soon, but the company has announced Metal Gear Survive at Gamescom 2016, and it really doesn't look all that great.

Metal Gear Survive is detailed as a new "addition to the Metal Gear Solid 5 universe," with Survive being set in an alternate timeline to the concluding events of Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes. In this alternate timeline, it seems as though the events of The Phantom Pain didn't go to plan. Konami adds that Metal Gear Survive is the survival of soldiers that previously worked at the Mother Base in Metal Gear Solid 5, and they must now band together against "massive threats".

There's 4-player cooperative play that Konami says "takes a divergent look at familiar Metal Gear themes and pursues a fresh spirit of exploration in unique gameplay mechanics," and there'll also be new weapons so that you can "combat charging creatures and lethal environments". As for the environments, we're told to expect "distorted desert landscapes full of massive half-formed structures, living biological threats, and the remains of a once strong military force". This happens after "unexplained wormholes forming in the sky".

NieR Automata is coming to PC

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 17, 2016 10:07 AM CDT

Nier: Automata, the sequel to Platinum Games' celebrated original action RPG NieR, will be making the jump to PC via Steam.

NieR Automata is coming to PC

Square Enix announced the news via press release, confirming that NieR: Automata would launch on Steam alongside the PS4 version in early 2017. The ARPG looks absolutely amazing and features some of the best talent in the industry, including Yosuke Saito (Dragon Quest X, Nier), Yoko Taro (Drakkengard, Nier) and Takahisa Taura who helped design Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

Accompanying the announcement, the publisher has dropped some fresh screenshots and a neat description: "Invaders from another world attack without warning, unleashing their secret weapon: the machines. In the face of this insurmountable threat, the human race is driven from the earth and takes refuge on the moon.

Titanfall 2 open multiplayer test begins this Friday

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 17, 2016 9:36 AM CDT

Respawn Entertainment will be hosting its open multiplayer technical test for Titanfall 2 starting this Friday, lasting for two weekends. The test will be made available for the Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game, with the PC being left out of the testing phase for now.

Titanfall 2 open multiplayer test begins this Friday

Titanfall 2 features a 5v5 fast-paced team-based mode known as Bounty Hunt, where Pilots and teammates will fight the enemy and the Remnant Fleet to kill grunts and other enemies, all while depositing points at the bank between waves of enemies. The second mode is an 8v8 classic mode called Pilots vs. Pilots, where it's just an 8v8 team deathmatch, while the 6v6 mode is a tweak to the Hardpoint Domination mode where you score 100% extra for your team.

The modes will be made available for 3 maps; Boomtown, Homestead and Forward Base Kodai. There will be two new Titans up for grabs, with Ion and Scorch being joined by new weapons that you'll get to choose once you're deployed. Respawn is also debuting Titanfall 2's new Networks feature, that will made matchmaking issues a thing of the past, hopefully.

HP's new Omen is an awesome new cube-shaped gaming PC

Anthony Garreffa | Computer Systems | Aug 17, 2016 7:24 AM CDT

HP has just unveiled its new Omen X Desktop, which will include a Intel's new Core i7 processor that's unlocked and ready to be cranked to 4GHz. The cube-shaped gaming PC can be configured with up to two NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 cards in SLI, or two AMD Radeon R9 Fury X cards in CrossFire, and our friends at Tech Radar have snapped some beautiful shots of the Omen X Desktop in the flesh.

On the outside, HP has used an absolutely beautiful custom cube-shaped design, but inside there is some great engineering and design work going on. The cube shape not only looks great, but the design was made to make the Omen X Desktop cooling more efficient. HP uses a microATX motherboard inside of the Omen X Desktop, which will take Intel's new Skylake-based Core i5 and Core i5 processors.

HP has used some premium features inside, with four hot-swappable disk drives that support 3.5-inch HDDs, 2.5-inch SSDs and the new U.2-based SSDs. The cube-shaped gaming PC has customizable lights on the front panel, where you can configure the lights into varying levels of brightness, patterns, and other effects.
