An Archer video game should look like this new XIII remaster

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 18, 2019 4:38 PM CDT

Old-school PS2 shooter XIII is getting remastered, and looks to be a perfect foundation for a wacky-but-serious Archer video game adaptation.

An Archer video game should look like this new XIII remaster

When I saw 2003's stylish shooter XIII for the first time today, something clicked in my head: this looks a lot like Archer. Sure XIII came first, but the connection was there and I can't erase it now. XIII has cel-shaded graphics that really bring to mind Sterling Archer's ridiculous exploits at spy agency ISIS, and it has a distinct comic-pulp layout and taps underlying beats that perfectly exemplify FX's inspirations for the show. Archer is a mix of James Bond's death-defying stunts with none of the suave charm, but the show's overall themes--crazy stunts, gunning down baddies, a serious-yet-humorous bent--can be found in XIII.

So why isn't there an Archer FPS that matches XIII's mechanics with tons of humor and nods thrown in the mix? It seems like the perfect cocktail for a AA product that Archer fans would eat up like Pam eats up crab legs.

Nintendo Switch may come to $37 billion Chinese market

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 18, 2019 2:41 PM CDT

Today could be a milestone in Nintendo's big expansion strategy as the Switch gets provisional approval to release in Guangdong, China.

Nintendo Switch may come to $37 billion Chinese market

Nintendo has partnered up with Tencent's overseas might to bring its popular handheld-console Switch hybrid for sale in parts of China. The system is getting a test release in China's Guangdong region accompanied with select games like New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, and there's a possibility the system won't be approved. Widespread provisional availability across mainline China has yet to be confirmed. Strict regulations have deterred or delayed games-makers like Nintendo from entering the Chinese market, and the approval process is slow-going, experts say.

China reigns above all other regions in gaming revenue, and Chinese juggernaut Tencent is the biggest earner in the industry. The Chinese market earned $37.5 billion in 2018, according to analyst firm Newzoo, or about 28% of all global earnings.

Obsidian's Alien RPG would've been a macabre Mass Effect

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 18, 2019 1:41 PM CDT

Instead of making Obsidian's interesting-looking Alien Crucible RPG, SEGA greenlit the disastrous Colonial Marines. Now some new info on Obsidian's scrapped Alien Crucible RPG surface, painting a macabre picture of what could've been.

Obsidian's Alien RPG would've been a macabre Mass Effect

With Crucible, Obsidian wanted to make an Alien horror game interspersed with RPG-based action. The idea was to have Mass Effect-like squads with AI and guns that would follow your commands, complete with KOTOR-style item menus, equipment and classes, all set in a reactive environment that's extremely hazardous and oppressive. Aliens roam across every corridor of your ship waiting to munch your friends, face-huggers lay in wait to transform your comrades into marauding freaks, and you could be prey at any moment. In a very real sense, Obsidian wanted to meld Alien: Isolation's fear with an Aliens-style action bent, all wrapped up in that kind of choking atmosphere of the original 1979 film.

In a recent interview with VG247, ex-Obsidian writer Chris Avellone said there'd be distinct survival elements. Players would have to make a mad scramble to collect weapons, ammo, and supplies without becoming xenomorph lunch.

Konami's new Castlevania collection has lots of variety

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 18, 2019 12:43 PM CDT

Today Konami announced the remaining games featured in its new Castlevania Anniversary Collection, confirming some interesting choices like Kid Dracula.

Konami's new Castlevania collection has lots of variety

Castlevania is one of the best franchises of all time, and helped define a unique niche of macabre platforming. Back in the day, these games taught us the true meaning of difficulty with their impossible jumps, sweat-inducing boss fights, and zero tolerance for mistakes. Now a new generation can experience the original Dark Souls of NES gaming with the Castlevania Anniversary Collection.

The collection bundles eight classics across a variety of different platforms like NES, SNES and Game Boy, and includes some surprises. The SEGA Genesis-exclusive Castlevania Bloodlines made the cut for the first time, and Konami's even bringing an English translated version of the Kid Dracula NES game to boot.

Ex Nintendo CEO Reggie Fils-Aime blessed with retiring gifts

Jak Connor | Gaming | Apr 18, 2019 6:00 AM CDT

Nintendo has given departing CEO of Nintendo America, Reggie Fils-Aime a bunch of extremely cool gifts to thank him for his time serving at Nintendo.

Ex Nintendo CEO Reggie Fils-Aime blessed with retiring gifts

Back in late February, an announcement came out of Nintendo that shocked fans, Nintendo America's CEO Reggie Fils-Aime cashed in his chips and said he was retiring. To thank Reggie for all his hard work at the western arm of Nintendo, he has received quite the selection of unique gifts. Starting off, the Big Man himself received a working Virtual Boy, art from Retro Studios, a notebook, a book from employees and a Mario statue.

The gifts are truly awesome, and just like Reggie says on his Twitter post, this is an "End of an era" and what better way to close it off then with some gifts that Reggie will be able to look back and remember his time at Nintendo. Out of the selection of gifts he received, I would personally say that the gift from Game Awards creator, Geoff Keighley is my favorite. I would even go as far to say that if Nintendo made that art piece available to purchase that it would sell like wildfire.

Mortal Kombat 11 Switch gameplay trailer shows story mode

Jak Connor | Gaming | Apr 18, 2019 5:00 AM CDT

NetherRealm Studios is back at it again with yet another trailer, this time we have the Nintendo Switch gameplay trailer that showcases some new story mode scenes.

Mortal Kombat 11 Switch gameplay trailer shows story mode

Almost two weeks ago now, Mortal Kombat Director for NetherRealm Studios, Ed Boon was asked about the Nintendo Switch version of Mortal Kombat 11. The main question that Switch users were dying to find out was if the game was going to run at 30FPS or 60FPS, according to Boon "Switch version is going to run at 60FPS." With that question answered, the next would be how much have NetherRealm downscaled the graphics to hit that solid 60FPS. Now we get a chance to look at the Switch gameplay.

Judging from the above gameplay video, Mortal Kombat 11 has definitely been downscaled graphically across the board to account for the hardware limitations of the Nintendo Switch. We can notice that the backgrounds during the fights aren't as well lit, and neither is the detail on each of the fighters. Honestly, I would rather NetherRealm sacrifice graphics for performance if that means Mortal Kombat 11 runs at a smooth 60FPS. Mortal Kombat 11 releases on the Xbox One, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch on April 23.

Mortal Kombat 11 - Shao Kahn can taunt players 'You Suck!'

Jak Connor | Gaming | Apr 18, 2019 4:00 AM CDT

In the new reveal trailer for Mortal Kombat 11's Shao Kahn we are introduced to not only some brutal moves by Outworlds ruler but also a hilarious taunt.

Mortal Kombat 11 - Shao Kahn can taunt players 'You Suck!'

We are less then a week out from the launch of Mortal Kombat 11, and NetherRealm Studios has not been slowing down with the reveal trailers they are releasing onto their Mortal Kombat YouTube Channel. This time round we have Shao Kahn, the emperor of Outworld and even though he might be an enemy, I'm certainly not disappointed with his moveset or taunt choices.

Shao Kahn carries what seems to be an oversized meat pulverizer for a weapon, and from the above video you can see that he knows how to use it. Shao Kahn uses a combination of moderately quick attacks that deal a considerable amount of damage, chaining together bone breaking string attacks that seem to just overwhelm his opponent. Just like most other reveal trailers, we get to see the fatality at the end, I won't describe what happens here so watch it to find out. Mortal Kombat 11 is planned for release on the Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC. It will be debuting on April 23rd.

The above image was posted onto the /r/MortalKombatleaks subreddit and showcases the upcoming games final and full roster. At the moment it is unclear if Frost is the only secret character to unlock, as there is plenty of room for more character icons around the edges. We know that there is DLC's coming, so perhaps the free spaces we can see in the above image will be filled with new or returning DLC fighters. Mortal Kombat 11 kicks its way onto the Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC on April 23.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate version 3.0 is live, patch notes

Jak Connor | Gaming | Apr 18, 2019 1:00 AM CDT

The big version 3.0.0 update has arrived for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, we now have a bunch of changes including the addition of the first DLC fighter, Persona's Joker.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate version 3.0 is live, patch notes

As announced yesterday, version 3.0.0 has now been made live and Nintendo have provided some official patch notes. Yesterday's announcement revealed that version 3.0.0 would not only contain Persona 5's Joker, but also Stage Builder, Shared Content, Smash World, and more. Nintendo has also issued out some balance changes to a very long list of fighters, while also making some tweaks to the base gameplay of how all fighters interact with each other.

Judging from the patch notes, Nintendo have decided to basically reduce the damage output of certain attacks against shields across the board. Perhaps shield breaks were become all to common in Ultimate, which in turn would slow down the gameplay. Personally, playing the game extensively myself I would agree that some attacks from certain fighters carry what could be considered as too much damage onto shield. Experiencing a heavy amount of damage on shield forces you to retreat or at least back off slightly due to players not wanting to risk a shield break.

PlayStation 5 will have 'appealing' price, next-gen specs

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Apr 17, 2019 11:28 PM CDT

Now that we have some concrete details on the PlayStation 5 like the fact it'll be powered by AMD's next-generation CPU and GPU architectures, something that will help drive the possibilities of 4K 60FPS in, well... everything.

PlayStation 5 will have 'appealing' price, next-gen specs

During a recent interview with Wired, PlayStation architect Mark Cerny talked about Sony using AMD's new Zen 2 CPU inside of the PS5 as well as a custom version of Radeon Navi, both on 7nm. This will provide the PS5 with the single largest generational upgrade in hardware, ever. This horsepower will surely come at a cost, which is something Cerny didn't address in the Wired interview.

Since that interview Peter Rubin tweeted out some additional words on his original article at Wired, tweeting about what Cerny said when the price of the PS5 was bought up. Cerny said in regards to the price of the next-gen PlayStation 5: "I believe that we will be able to release it at an SRP [suggested retail price] that will be appealing to gamers in light of its advanced feature set".

Samsung's new Galaxy Fold screen breaks on FIRST day of use

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Apr 17, 2019 10:51 PM CDT

Samsung's new Galaxy Fold isn't quite available yet but the company has worked closely with reviewers and influencers hooking them up with some of the first handsets to the public. Well, it didn't go so good, and by 'not going so good' we mean some of them had their screens break on the first day.

Samsung's new Galaxy Fold screen breaks on FIRST day of use

The first Galaxy Fold review units that were sent out broke in the first day of use in the hands of people like Steve Kovach from CNBC, popular YouTuber MKBHD, Bloomberg, and The Verge. So you can see a blend of YouTubers, mainstream media, and big tech sites. There is reportedly a layer on top of the Galaxy Fold's display that is not a screen protector, and users are warned not to remove it. Well, some have tried and in MKBHD's own words he got only a little way of peeling it off before the "display spazzed and blacked out".

The thing is that Samsung actually has a 'wrap' over the screen on the Galaxy Fold that warns: "The main screen includes a special protective layer. Peeling off the protective layer or using any adhesives on the main screen, such as screen protectors or stickers, may cause damage". Ouch.

Carl's Jr. testing CBD-infused burger in Denver on 4/20

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Apr 17, 2019 10:13 PM CDT

In something that is totally new tech-related, Carl's Jr. has announced it will be selling a CBD-infused burger at one of its locations in Denver, on 4/20.

Carl's Jr. testing CBD-infused burger in Denver on 4/20

CBD is all over the place in the US now as more states legalize it, and the industry is quickly growing as a whole including a now major fast food chain in the US with Carl's Jr. and the first CBD-infused burger. The burger in question is the Rocky Mountain High: CheeseBurger Delight features two beef patties, pickled jalapenos, pepper jack cheese, waffle fries and then around 5mg of hemp-derived CBD extract in the burger chain's Santa Fe Sauce.

The burger will of course sell for $4.20, while Carl's Jr. will have at least 1000 of them to sell. Denver, Colorado was the first US state to legalize marijuana, so it's fitting that Carl's Jr. uses the state to sell the first CBD-infused burger. Carl's Jr. senior vice president of marketing, Patty Trevino, explains: "We are a West Coast brand. The states out in the West Coast have been the ones to really adopt and appreciate and be open to cannabis".

Next-gen Switch delayed past 2019, reports say

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 17, 2019 6:39 PM CDT

Nintendo plans to release two new Switch systems aimed at different consumer segments: a beefier Switch Pro with expanded hardware and upgraded specs, and a cheaper Switch Lite that should replace the 3DS. Now reports say the Switch Pro model has been delayed due to technical difficulties.

Next-gen Switch delayed past 2019, reports say

Nintendo's new enthusiast Switch, dubbed the Switch Pro, isn't just an iterative refresh like Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro. Sources say it's a big jump over the existing Switch handheld-console hybrid, and will be a true next-gen variant of the transformable system. Past reports said the Switch Pro would get a new Tegra SoC for boosted processing power and double system memory at 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM.

But according to Japanese publication Nikkei, this hardware leap is causing problems. The system is drawing too much power, which could affect thermals. Nintendo can't get power consumption right with the new hardware--something it struggled with while developing the first Switch. The Switch Pro's components may get too hot while in handheld mode or docked for home use. Nintendo has also had issues getting the OS to run on the latest iteration. This setback has led to a delay past 2019, sources tell the website.

Lots of Anthem's core players have quit the game

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 17, 2019 2:09 PM CDT

Anthem is and has been a mess since launch. Our review expressed many of the issues Anthem suffers from, namely BioWare's misunderstanding of live service games. Thanks to glitches, an unrewarding loot cycle, and weird design flaws, gamers are leaving Anthem's in-game world behind.

Lots of Anthem's core players have quit the game

A portion of Anthem's players are leaving the game as BioWare struggles to keep up with feedback. The Anthem subreddit represents some of the game's most devout fans. Members are constantly sharing feedback, bugs, and ideas on how to fix the game. But their faith is wearing thin as the game seems moored in stagnant waters, and many have already quit the game.

According to a new poll that surveyed over 1,000 Anthem players on the subreddit, over half of the respondents have left the game entirely. 52% of the 1,059 surveyed gamers, or about 562 players, have quit the game for good. This is just a drop in the bucket to Anthem's playerbase, which probably stretches in the hundreds of thousands if not millions, but its a sampling of some of the game's most dedicated users.

Halo 5 split-screen isn't happening, 343i confirms

Microsoft falsely advertised Halo 5 split-screen in a console reveal video, but it's not actually happening.

Halo 5 split-screen isn't happening, 343i confirms

Last night Microsoft announced the overpriced disc-less Xbox One S and released a spoofy video about the new digital-only system. The footage showed two people playing split-screen in Halo 5: Guardians, a game notorious for its absence of the fan-favorite couch co-op/PVP mode. This of course ignited hope that Halo 5 could finally get split-screen support.

But 343 Industries says it's not going to happen. The studio is deep into development on Halo: Infinite, the big new marquee shooter, which is getting a brand new games engine and even a PC port. "Sorry to disappoint but no, split-screen isn't being added to Halo 5. The footage in question looks to be a little bit of good old fashioned creative liberty in the editing bay," said 343i's Brian Jarrard.

Witcher TV show releases late 2019, Netflix confirms

Netflix has invested a pretty penny into its eight-episode adaptation of Andrezj Sapowski's dark fantasy series. The Witcher TV show stars Superman's Henry Cavill as the titular monster-hunter Geralt of Rivia, and was filmed across beautiful locales of Hungary.

Previously billed as a 2019 release, Netflix now confirms a holiday release window for the series. Here's what the company said during its recent quarterly earnings call: "And then you start seeing later in the fourth quarter some of our bigger film investments coming through like Irishman, like 6 Underground and also a big new original series that we're currently shooting in Hungary called The Witcher, that is enormous European IP, very popular game and Book IP, that we think is going to make a really fun global series," Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos confirmed in a recent earnings call.
