AMD's new leaked Navi GPU: same performance as Radeon RX 570

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 28, 2019 9:11 PM CDT

AMD looks to be working on a lower-end version of Navi with a new Navi 14 GPU showing up on Compubench, with 24 CUs that would put it into the Polaris 11 (or Polaris 21).

AMD's new leaked Navi GPU: same performance as Radeon RX 570

In total there are three different Navi 14 listings in Compubench, with 3GB, 4GB, and 8GB models. The internal name is Navi 14 but we should expect it as a Radeon RX 5600 series (or even RX 5500 series). Navi 14 has 24 CUs with 1536 stream processors, and what should be GDDR6 memory.

The three Navi 14 GPUs listed on Compubench:

XFX makes its Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC II official, best looking Navi?

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 28, 2019 8:27 PM CDT

XFX has officially launched the XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC II, with the new THICC II variant from XFX is another custom Navi card that out of the few on the market, looks like the best.

XFX makes its Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC II official, best looking Navi?

XFX is no stranger to custom Radeon graphics cards, but it has been dormant for what feels like forever from its beautifully-designed custom AMD cards. The new THICC II design is a re-work of the great work on the XFX double dissipation custom card, something that used to be a thing back in the Radeon R200 series family.

The company is using a 2.7-slot design with XFX tapping its own Ghost Thermal 2.0 cooler which promises great thermals and noise, with 35% less fan noise, it'll also be quiet. XFX uses 2 x 100mm fans to keep the Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC II nice and cool (and quiet).

Control mods arrive, introduce FOV slider and remove motion blur

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 28, 2019 8:00 PM CDT

Remedy Entertainment blew gamers and enthusiasts away with its release of Control a few days ago, and while it has only been a few days, modders are already hard at work on getting changes into the game.

Control mods arrive, introduce FOV slider and remove motion blur

A new mod has surfaced for the game, which adds an FOV slider into the game that works with both DX11 and DX12, while another mod removes motion blur from the game -- but only for the DX11-powered version of Control.

The first mod with the FOV slider is easy to use, as you just press F1 to increase the FOV while pressing F2 decreases the FOV, and finally pressing backspace will revert back to the default FOV.

KFC's plant-based meat-free nuggets sell out in under 5 hours

Anthony Garreffa | Science, Space, & Robotics | Aug 28, 2019 7:31 PM CDT

KFC offered up its plant-based meat-free chicken nuggets collaborating with Beyond Meats for its Beyond Fried Chicken test, exclusive to one of its stores in Atlanta -- well, that 'chicken' sold out in 5 hours flat.

KFC's plant-based meat-free nuggets sell out in under 5 hours

Interestingly, KFC said it sold as much of the meat-free chicken it did in those 5 hours than it sells popcorn chicken in a week. KFC said it would be looking at the results of its meat-free chicken sales and reception, but didn't indicate whether we'd see a bigger test or nationwide rollout.

With its popularity, KFC would be silly to not continue this trial at least -- it seems popular. Beyond Meat also gets a bunch of that limelight, and now they have headlines of selling out their meat-free chicken at Kentucky Fried Chicken of all places.

Sharp to unveil 120-inch 8K TV with 5G connectivity at IFA 2019

Anthony Garreffa | Displays | Aug 28, 2019 7:10 PM CDT

Sharp will unveil and detail its larger-than-life-and-your-wallet-too 8K TV at IFA 2019 next week, with the company to unveil the world's largest 8K TV at a huge 120 inches.

Sharp to unveil 120-inch 8K TV with 5G connectivity at IFA 2019

We should expect Sharp to use a 120-inch LCD panel on its new 8K TV but outside of that, not much is known -- except for one thing: 5G connectivity. Sharp will be including 5G connectivity into its new 8K for reasons unknown, but it wants to see these new TVs used to display works of art.

I don't know why anyone would need 5G in their TV, but I guess when you're spending this much on a new display then the tiny investment per 5G chip for the 8K TVs wouldn't add that much to the price. I think I'd rather have a Shield TV or something else built-in, or hell even a built-in Chromecast Ultra.

Cyberpunk 2077 won't have female and male gender options

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 28, 2019 7:03 PM CDT

After criticism over how gender and trans issues are handled in Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt RED eliminates the barriers between male and female player characters in the new game.

Cyberpunk 2077 won't have female and male gender options

Cyberpunk 2077 will no longer have binary gender options; instead V. is now gender neutral and gamers choose a body type in the character customization screen rather than a hard line male or female definition. The sci-fi FPS RPG's customization has expanded greatly as a result, CDPR says, opening up immersion and accessibility to all kinds of gamers.

"Our character creation menu, for instance. Compared to the last demo we now give you so many more options. You don't choose your gender anymore. You don't choose, 'I want to be a female or male character' you now choose a body type," Cyberpunk 2077 senior concept artist Marthe Jonkers told MCV.

Warner Bros. Games opens new studio for F2P mobile games

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment opens a new studio in San Diego that'll focus exclusively on free-to-play mobile games.

Warner Bros. Games opens new studio for F2P mobile games

On the heels of its strong monetization in games like MK11 and Shadow of War, WB is eager to tap the billion dollar free-to-play mobile market. It's a bustling segment that made 80% of 2018's total yearly revenues (per SuperData). Everyone wants a piece of that $87 billion dollar pie, including WB.

WB Games already has some big mobile successes including the Game of Thrones: Conquest title and Harry Potter Wizards Unite. The idea here is to get steady recurring revenues from mobile games to help big-budget projects like the new rumored live service Justice League game from Rocksteady, WB Games Montreal's new project (maybe Batman Court of Owls), and the upcoming Harry Potter RPG from Avalanche.

NBA 2K20's new trailer feels like a Las Vegas casino ad

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 28, 2019 5:24 PM CDT

NBA 2K20's newest trailer is filled with lottery-style gambling-esque mechanics, including random card packs straight out of Magic: The Gathering, spin wheels, and even slot machines.

NBA 2K20's new trailer feels like a Las Vegas casino ad

NBA 2K games are huge cash crops for Take-Two. Last quarter, NBA 2K19 became its best-selling sports franchise of all time and helped rake in $313 million from microtransactions. NBA 2K's MyTeam mode, which is a lot like FIFA Ultimate Team, is the main driver for this success.

Today 2K dropped a new trailer for NBA 2K20's MyTeam that perfectly illustrates its lootbox-style monetization. It exposes very luck-based mechanics that're reminiscent of a casino, with star NBA players to illustrate just how big you can win from its Triple Threat slot machines, card packs, and a new spin wheel straight out of a game show. The game's engagement hinges on allowing users to build a fantasy dream team of players, but it comes at a cost: either grinding for in-game currency to unlock and then upgrade the players via card packs, or paying money directly for the Virtual Currency itself. There's apparently lots more opportunities to win and earn VC this time around, though.

All future Ubisoft games should skip Steam

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 28, 2019 11:11 AM CDT

Ubisoft thinks Steam's 70-30 revenue split is archaic and fully embraces the Epic Games Store's more attractive 88-12 split.

All future Ubisoft games should skip Steam

Ubisoft loves digital dollars, and to make as many as possible it's baked in live services, engagement hooks, and microtransactions into all its games. But there's one fly in the billion-dollar ointment: the revenue share platform-holders like Valve get to keep. For every game sold on Steam, developers and publishers keep 70% and Valve keeps 30% of the earnings (the devs' rate boosts to 75% if you make $10 million, and 80% for $50 million). Despite Steam being more actively used to buy games, Ubisoft finds the store's model unsustainable and moved to a better earnings alternative: the Epic Games Store, which lets them keep 88% of all revenues.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Ubisoft VP of partnerships and revenue Chris Early made things pretty clear. We shouldn't expect Ubisoft to go back to Steam unless Valve changes the revenue share. "It's unrealistic, the current business model that they have. It doesn't reflect where the world is today in terms of game distribution."

Microsoft's new Age of Empires studio isn't directly making the games

Jak Connor | Gaming | Aug 28, 2019 7:12 AM CDT

If you didn't know already, Microsoft recently acquired Brutal Legend and Psychonauts studio 'Double Fine', and through this acquisition Microsoft formed a new studio who's role is to purely oversee production on the Age of Empires franchise.

Microsoft's new Age of Empires studio isn't directly making the games

The new studio - which has yet to be named - will be controlled by veteran producer and former Xbox Game Studios general manager, Shannon Loftis. Microsoft's Creative Director, Adam Isgreen confirmed this news with PCGamesInsider.biz, saying "We do have an internal team but we're really providing oversight to our wonderful development partners--our team at Forgotten Empires that made Age of Empires: Definitive Edition and is working on Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, but we also have a group in Australia--Tantalus Media--that's working on Age of Empires III."

He continued and said "We have Relic up in Vancouver. But they're also helping each other out with all the games, too. Our role at Microsoft is to enable these great developers to make Age products and to be the overseers and the ones making sure that we're on-message and on-brand for delivering what we believe to be great Age of Empires experiences. They're accessible, for all ages and you may learn something about history whether you want to or not."

Jak Connor | Cryptocurrency & Mining | Aug 28, 2019 6:16 AM CDT

Facebook is still slowly developing their own crytocurrency and to ensure that its a stable and clean coin once it arrives in the public's hands, the company is offering anyone up to $10,000 to find bugs or errors within it.

You can earn $10,000 finding bugs in Facebook's cryptocurrency 'Libra'

For those that don't know why bug testing is crucial before the coin arrives on the market, its extremely difficult to provide fixes once the coin has arrived on the blockchain. Since the company is aiming at squashing all the bugs before they launch the coin, they will be offering anyone up to $10,000 per bug depending on how severe the bug is.

Users that are interested in testing the infrastructure of Libra can do so by accessing it via its official hub page on HackerOne. Users will be required to make a HackerOne account and will be rewarded in either real-world currencies or digital currencies for their findings. Here's why YouTube leaves up some 'controversial or offensive' videos

Jak Connor | Internet & Websites | Aug 28, 2019 4:03 AM CDT

While YouTube is certainly no stranger to controversy, the CEO of the platform, Susan Wojcicki has explained why sometimes the company allows for video's to stay online that are inherently offensive or controversial.

Here's why YouTube leaves up some 'controversial or offensive' videos

In Wojcicki's quarterly letters, she explains that YouTube is in a continuous struggle with users' content being uploaded to the platform being labeled as 'controversial or even offensive'. She says that sometimes is good for the platform to leave some controversial content online, as it proves that YouTube is and open platform that wants to learn from a range of different perspectives.

Wojcicki says that YouTube's "commitment to openness is not easy" and that "hearing a broad range of perspectives ultimately makes us a stronger and more informed society." Despite the backlash on certain pieces of content being flagged for take down, Wojcicki says that these 'problematic' videos make up "a fraction of one percent" of the content uploaded to YouTube. Therefore, the vast majority of the content on the platform outweighs the potential harmful impact of these purportedly 'controversial' videos.

NASA's Deep Space Atomic Clock is the ultimate cosmic timer & measurer

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Aug 28, 2019 3:09 AM CDT

NASA launched their Deep Space Atomic Clock (DSAC) back in June and now the clock is starting its orbit around Earth. NASA will be testing DSAC for over a year.

NASA's Deep Space Atomic Clock is the ultimate cosmic timer & measurer

What is an atomic clock? Well, a traditional clock counts its seconds based on a ticking pendulum, an atomic clock measures the distance between objects by timing how long it takes for a single to travel to the object and make it back to the clock. NASA goal in mind is that having an atomic clock out in space will allow for future space missions to have pinpoint accuracy without the need of transmitting the signal back down to Earth.

Currently, a spacecraft sends and receives signals to Earth, which then people on Earth use to pinpoint its location. This process can take several minutes and sometimes even hours. A spacecraft with its own atomic clock would not have to deal with this transfer time and would be able to calculate what it needs to aboard the ship. With NASA's orbital atomic clock now floating around Earth, spacecrafts can also travel much longer distances as the signal no longer needs to reach Earth's surface. NASA will be conducting a one-year test on this atomic clock.

SpaceX's Starhopper aces 150 meter test flight after recent failure

The SpaceX team are currently celebrating the successful test launch of the human-transporting Starship vehicle, the Starhopper.

SpaceX's Starhopper aces 150 meter test flight after recent failure

The Starhopper is designed to carry humans to different locations on Mars' surface when we arrive there, and today SpaceX has successfully achieved a 150 meter high flight test. The Starhopper lifted off just after 6pm EDT and flew sideways in the air and touched down at a separate landing pad. The flight lasted for just 57 seconds.

SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk took to Twitter to congratulate his team on their achievement, saying "Congrats SpaceX team!!" The Starhopper ship uses one Raptor engine, for a comparison - the 100-passenger 'Starship' rocket that SpaceX is developing has six Raptor Engines and the 'Super Heavy' will have 35. Yesterday SpaceX had to cancel the Starhopper's test flight due to a engine malfunction, its great to see fixes were made in such a short time. Congratulations SpaceX!

NASA Chief does a Jerry from Rick and Morty, says 'Pluto is a planet'

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Aug 28, 2019 1:04 AM CDT

If you are a fan of science and space, then you should definitely check out Rick and Morty. An episode in the series tackles the debate of whether or not Pluto should gain its planetary status back or remain as a dwarf-planet.

NASA Chief does a Jerry from Rick and Morty, says 'Pluto is a planet'

NASA's Chief Administrator believes that Pluto should re-gain its planetary status and be looked at as if it's a planet. He says "Just so you know, in my view Pluto is a planet and you can write that the NASA Administrator declared Pluto a planet once again, I'm sticking by that, its the way I learned it, I'm committed to it."

Pluto lost its planetary status a little over a decade ago when the International Astronomical Union (IAU) conducted a vote towards whether or not Pluto met the planetary criteria. For a space body to be considered a planet it must orbit the sun, have an almost round shape and "clear its orbital neighborhood". The 2006 vote on Pluto remaining a planet fell short due to it not meeting the last part in the criteria.

Death Stranding will feature a FIRST PERSON perspective mode

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 27, 2019 10:31 PM CDT

Hideo Kojima himself has confirmed that PlayStation 4 exclusive Death Stranding will have a first-person view, but let's hope it's not for when you're taking a leak.

Death Stranding will feature a FIRST PERSON perspective mode

Kojima explained in a tweet: "Since I get this question alot, DEATH STRANDING is different from stealth game. You can enjoy First Person View but not a First Person Shooter game. It's brand new game genre that adapted the concept of strand that we call Action Game, Strand Game (Social Strand System)".

It's interesting that Kojima is making sure we all know that it is a "brand new game genre" that has "adapted the concept of strand" that he calls Action Game, Strand Game (Social Strand System). Maybe Kojima has been drinking (hopefully not pee-infused) kool-aid, but Death Stranding looks interesting nonetheless.
