Cyberpunk 2077 will get tons of post-launch DLC and huge expansions

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 11, 2020 6:59 PM CDT

Cyberpunk 2077 will follow in The Witcher 3's footsteps with a huge arsenal of free DLC packs, complete with sprawling post-launch expansions that carry the story forward.

Cyberpunk 2077 will get tons of post-launch DLC and huge expansions

CD Projekt RED's overall gameplan will continue with Cyberpunk 2077. The team plans to deliver a massive game that spans, oh, probably 100 hours, complete with a bunch of free DLC to boot. We'll also see sizable expansions that rival Witcher 3's titanic Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone.

In a recent interview with Polish investors, CD Projekt RED president Adam Kicinski says not to expect anything less than what The Witcher 3 delivered.

Doom Eternal reshade vs vanilla side-by-side comparison

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 11, 2020 5:14 PM CDT

Doom Eternal's Carmack Reshade mod gives a neat overhaul to the graphics, but some areas don't look as good as others. We toned down the default settings a bit (removed bloom entirely) to see how some of the more basic effects stack up against the vanilla version.

Doom Eternal reshade vs vanilla side-by-side comparison

Reshade mods can really make a game pop, or they can diffuse everything in darkness. The general settings in Carmack's Eternal Reshade kind of ride the border between making the game look amazing, and somewhat unplayable. We tweaked a few of the settings--there's a ton of them, so you can mix and match and create some really amazing setpieces--in early experiments to see what we could pull off. We used more basic presets like tweaked Fake HDR, LevelsPlus, LUT, and Adaptive Sharpen. I also recommend messing around with Monochrome too.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake PS4 trailer captured on PC, hints at PC port

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 11, 2020 2:18 PM CDT

Square Enix reveals the latest Final Fantasy 7 Remake trailer footage was captured on PC. This could be for disclosure (the graphics are obviously beyond what a PS4 Pro can deliver) or it could hint at a PC port. We're betting on both.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake PS4 trailer captured on PC, hints at PC port

To no one's surprise, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is probably coming to PC. Square Enix previously confirmed the game is only debuting first on PS4 and isn't a full-on exclusive. This indicates FF7R will come to other platforms after FF7R's one-year PS4 exclusivity runs out. That means we won't see FF7R cross over to Xbox One or PC until April 10, 2021 at the earliest.

"The highly anticipated FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE will debut first on the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system on March 3rd, 2020," read a press release from 2019.

Doom Eternal's reshade mod is absolutely wicked

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 10, 2020 12:11 PM CDT

Doom Eternal's new Carmack Reshade mod adds a whole new dimension of depth, vibrancy, and brutality to your favorite demon-slaying shooter.

Doom Eternal's reshade mod is absolutely wicked

We just tried out the Carmack Eternal Reshade mod from Nexus Mods, and the results are pretty crazy. The mod itself is basically a Vulkan effects editor that lets you adjust various graphics, lighting, and visual settings in the game, including ambient light, simulated HDR, monochrome black-and-white filters to make everything into a 1950's gorefest, godrays, bloom--the works.

You can download the Reshade mod and customize everything yourself and experiment with all the awesome effects, or just use the presets designed by the mod's uploader. Either way, the game will look even better than it already did...which is saying a lot.

Cyberpunk 2077 coming to next-gen PS5, Xbox Series X as new versions

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 9, 2020 4:31 PM CDT

Cyberpunk 2077 will have special next-gen optimized releases for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X's new higher-end hardware, allowing for ultra-fast loading times, high frame rates, hardware-based ray tracing, 4K 60FPS, and more.

Cyberpunk 2077 coming to next-gen PS5, Xbox Series X as new versions

In its recent earnings call, CD Projekt RED confirms it plans to release a separate next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 that leverages the full power of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. The next-gen version may not be available when next-gen consoles launch in 2020, though.

There's two ways CDPR will likely handle this: upgrading the existing PS4 and Xbox One versions with enhancement patches to enable boosted performance and features, and launching a separate SKU in stores. CDPR has already confirmed anyone who buys an Xbox One copy will also get the Series X version too.

PlayStation 5's new Create button could change gaming forever

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 9, 2020 3:06 PM CDT

The PlayStation 5's new DualSense controller has lots of nifty improvements, but the new Create button might be a gateway to a new kind of interactivity that console gaming has never seen before.

PlayStation 5's new Create button could change gaming forever

Let me preface this article by saying this is all theoretical, and my points are centered around patents that may not actually manifest into PS5 features. But it seems very likely to happen. And yes, this is a big article.

Sony just revealed the PlayStation 5's controller, the DualSense. It's a new next-gen controller design that kicks off a brand new type of peripheral; the DualShock had motion tracking and rumble, the DualSense has haptic/tactical triggers and a new kind of sound output with the PS5's Tempest audio engine. Those are exciting, sure, but the biggest innovator might be hiding in plain sight. It's the Create button that could ultimately change how users interact with games.

Dead Island 2 to launch on PS5, Xbox Series X and current-gen consoles

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 9, 2020 2:07 PM CDT

Dead Island 2 is still happening, and it should release on both current-gen systems and next-gen consoles like the PS5, Xbox Series X.

Dead Island 2 to launch on PS5, Xbox Series X and current-gen consoles

Dead Island 2 isn't dead. It did go through development hell for a while and changed hands three times--first Yager Interactive was on the project, then Sumo Digital stepped it, and now Homefront dev Dambuster Studios is at the helm--but it's still in the works. THQ Nordic is now calling the shots after buying Deep Silver, and the company strongly hints Dead Island 2 will be out by March 31, 2021.

That puts the sunny zombie sequel firmly in next-gen console territory. A new art director job listing indicates Dambuster plans to release the game across both gens, but in the Xbox Series X's case, it should just be an enhanced Xbox One version considering Microsoft isn't making next-gen exclusive titles.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake discs take more than an hour to fully install

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 9, 2020 1:17 PM CDT

Final Fantasy 7 Remake physical copies take a substantial time to install on PlayStation 4, so be ready for a wait.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake discs take more than an hour to fully install

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a huge game. It clocks in at over 100GB across two full-sized 50GB Blu-ray discs, and can take over an hour to install on PS4. Similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, one disc is a Play Disc, and the other is a Data Disc. And like RDR2, FF7R takes even more time to install from a disc than it would to download on a modern internet connection.

Interestingly enough, Square Enix will let you play Final Fantasy 7 Remake even if you haven't fully installed the Data Disc. You can play up to the ending of Chapter 1 on the Play Disc before you're prompted to install the Data Disc. It's a nice touch but it's still better to buy digital for this one.

MAINGEAR LIV: an emergency pulmonary ventilator at 1/4 the cost

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Apr 9, 2020 6:39 AM CDT

MAINGEAR is known in the United States as one of the highest-end custom gaming PC makers, but the company has quickly pivoted to respond to the novel coronavirus pandemic with the release of the LIV -- a new ventilator being made on the cheap.

MAINGEAR LIV: an emergency pulmonary ventilator at 1/4 the cost

MAINGEAR is shifting over a certain allocation of its manufacturing capabilities, to help New York City and its overwhelmed intensive care units. MAINGEAR developed the new LIV ventilator in-house with medical advisers in just a matter of weeks, all while using off-the-shelf parts that can be "produced for approximately a quarter of the price" of a regular ventilator.

The company is now awaiting FDA clearance, with MAINGEAR ready to start delivering its new LIV ventilator in as little as two weeks from now. MAINGEAR is using an "easy to use touchscreen interface", where the company has used an NVIDIA Shield rocking custom software and "redundant power supplies".

Ultra-rare Cyberpunk 2077 GeForce RTX 2080 Ti on eBay for $5000

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Apr 9, 2020 6:29 AM CDT

Remember when NVIDIA unveiled that ridiculously amazing custom GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Cyberpunk 2077 Edition graphics card? Yeah, well someone is selling one of them on eBay for $5000.

Ultra-rare Cyberpunk 2077 GeForce RTX 2080 Ti on eBay for $5000

NVIDIA made less than 200 of the custom GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Cyberpunk 2077 Edition graphics cards, where they were mostly given away during NVIDIA's huge competition. The company hosted a popular Twitter competition where they took in over 130,000 entries -- and picked people in pairs of two.

Some of the custom GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Cyberpunk 2077 Edition graphics cards have been selling on eBay for anywhere between $3000 and $4300, but at the time of writing there was one on eBay for a wallet-busting $5000. For that, I'd want Keanu Reeves to personally call me up and call me "breathtaking"... right? Keanu?? Call me later, kay?

That's where our good friends at LetsGoDigital come into play, with their in-house designer Snoreyn whipping up some gorgeous new renders of the PlayStation 5. He whipped up an awesome-looking PlayStation 5 retail box concept that makes me really hope Sony was paying attention and make it just like that.

The new PlayStation 5 concept renders come in both black and white, with a gorgeous LED at the top. On the back we have a bunch of connectivity bet ween HDMI, Ethernet, digital optical audio, power, and USB ports. Around the front will be the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Here is the COVID-19 coronavirus Achilles heel, says experts

Anthony Garreffa | Science, Space, & Robotics | Apr 8, 2020 8:44 PM CDT

The world is scrambling to find the magic bullet for COVID-19 coronavirus, and it seems that researchers may have just found what they're describing as the Achilles heel of COVID-19 coronavirus.

Here is the COVID-19 coronavirus Achilles heel, says experts

In a statement from Scripps Research, researchers said that they have found a specific portion of COVID-19 that could be targeted with vaccines after the team mapped a human antibody's interaction with SARS-CoV-2 at "near-atomic-scale resolution". The antibody itself was secured from a SARS patient from many years ago, but it also reacts to SARS-CoV-2.

Dr. Ian Wilson, the study's lead author, said in a statement: "The knowledge of conserved sites like this can aid in structure-based design of vaccines and therapeutics against SARS-CoV-2, and these would also protect against other coronaviruses-including those that may emerge in the future".

US gov classifying all coronavirus deaths as COVID-19 deaths

Anthony Garreffa | Science, Space, & Robotics | Apr 8, 2020 8:18 PM CDT

The US government is classifying the deaths of any and all patients with coronavirus, as COVID-19 deaths -- no matter the underlying health conditions that killed them.

US gov classifying all coronavirus deaths as COVID-19 deaths

The news is coming directly from Dr. Deborah Birx, the response coordinator for the White House coronavirus task force. She said that the federal government is still counting suspected COVID-19 deaths, even though nations around the world are doing the opposite of this.

Dr. Birx said during a Tuesday news briefing at the White House: "There are other countries that if you had a pre-existing condition, and let's say the virus caused you to go to the ICU [intensive care unit] and then have a heart or kidney problem. Some countries are recording that as a heart issue or a kidney issue and not a COVID-19 death".

This is our first look at Wuhan, China after coronavirus lockdown lift

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Apr 8, 2020 8:01 PM CDT

Can you believe Wuhan, China has been under extreme lockdown for 76 days -- the largest lockdown in human history. But now, the people of Wuhan are enjoying a post-lockdown lifestyle... for now.

This is our first look at Wuhan, China after coronavirus lockdown lift

Wuhan has re-opened its highway tolls, flights and train services are leaving the city -- and to make it more personal, I'm based in Australia and we just had a flight from Wuhan land at the Sydney Airport. As for Wuhan residents, they are free to travel throughout China as long as they are not infected with COVID-19.

Jia Shengzhi, a delivery driver in Wuhan, told the BBC: "During the past two months, almost no-one was on the streets. It made me feel sad. We sometimes received phone calls from customers asking for help such as sending medicines to their ageing parents".

South Korea: electronic wristbands to enforce COVID-19 quarantine

Anthony Garreffa | Science, Space, & Robotics | Apr 8, 2020 7:26 PM CDT

The South Korean government looks to be taking the spread of COVID-19 a little more seriously, and a little more painful to citizens, as it considers the use of an electronic wristband to enforce quarantine measures across the country.

South Korea: electronic wristbands to enforce COVID-19 quarantine

Yoon Tae-ho, the Director General for Public Health Policy at the Ministry of Health and Welfare, explained the electronic wristbands being used to stop the spread of COVID-19 coronavirus. He said: "Most of those who are in quarantine are following protocols well but there have been some violations. We will come up with the most efficient measure after further discussions".

But South Korean residents shouldn't fear electronic wristbands just yet, as he added that the South Korean government is well aware of the negative connotations that come using electronic wristbands -- and to add, a government forcing that on its citizens is very Orwellian.

Sony confirms PlayStation 5 DualSense controller has a headphone jack

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 8, 2020 6:58 PM CDT

Yesterday Sony announced the PlayStation 5's official next-gen controller, the DualSense. But the released images didn't show a critical feature gamers were curious about: The included AUX headphone jack. Luckily Sony has swooped in to make clarifications.

Sony confirms PlayStation 5 DualSense controller has a headphone jack

Yes, the PS5's new DualSense controller will have a headphone jack. All of your old headsets should still be compatible with the PS5's audio output function. "[The DualSense] still has an audio jack so you can plug in your own headsets like DualShock 4,"PlayStation product manager Toshimasa Aoki said on Twitter.

This inclusion makes sense. The PS5 is built around carrying its legacy forward and won't leave PS4 gamers behind: Not only will the PS5 support PS4 games, but it'll also support current-gen peripherals like headsets, DualShock 4 controllers, and the PlayStation VR headset.

How to sign up to Stadia's free two month trial

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 8, 2020 6:08 PM CDT

To help keep people at home (and to hopefully get money from forgotten subs), Google is giving away a free two month trial to Stadia Pro. But it's not all that easy to sign up.

How to sign up to Stadia's free two month trial

Google just announced a free Stadia subscription offer in a recent blog post. There's just one problem: The post leaves out how you actually sign up for the trial. Going to the Stadia.com website only gives you an option to either buy the $129 Founder's Edition, or to sign up using an invite code.

To actually sign up and get your free trial you have to download the Stadia app to your phone. You'll have to do this anyway because Stadia is locked behind the app (yes, it's annoying). Click on the free trial button, tie your Google account to Stadia, and enter some credit card info. Be mindful of the date because Google will charge you $10 a month in June if you forget.

Coronavirus may not delay Cyberpunk 2077's September 2020 release

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 8, 2020 3:55 PM CDT

Cyberpunk 2077 is still planned for a September 2020 release and CD Projekt RED is confident the game won't be delayed.

Coronavirus may not delay Cyberpunk 2077's September 2020 release

CDPR delivered some good news in its latest 2019 earnings report: Net earnings are up 44%, profits are up 60%, and development on Cyberpunk 2077 is going well even as devs work from home. The big worry is that COVID-19 could delay Cyberpunk 2077 and other major games because of massive interruptions to daily work schedules. But CDPR strongly indicates their ambitious sci-fi FPS-RPG mash-up will hit its intended 2020 launch.

"We're giving it our all, and thanks to the tools at our disposal we have been able to maintain full continuity of our efforts," CD Projekt RED Chief Financial Officer Piotr Nielubowicz said in a recent investor's presentation.

PC conquers Witcher 3 sales, but Switch is heating up fast

PC conquers Witcher 3 sales, but Switch is heating up fast

CD Projekt RED just announced its 2019 earnings report and showed a surprising sales spike for its RPG magnum opus. Thanks to some clever pixel-counting from Twitter sleuth DarkDetectiveNL, we have an idea how much Witcher 3 has sold on each platform. The White Wolf only just slashed onto Nintendo Switch last October, but the Switcher has sold roughly 700,000 copies to date.

PC still leads with a healthy 12 million cumulative sales, and PS4 is in second place with 10 million, which is to be expected given its massive 108 million-strong install base. Xbox One lags at 4.3 million, and the Switch is heating up with roughly 700K copies.
