GPU market share: NVIDIA commands with 80%, leaves AMD with 20%
We know that NVIDIA commands around 75-80% of the discrete GPU market share, but the latest Jon Peddie Research report notes that yeah... NVIDIA still owns the GPU market.
JPR's latest report notes that add-in-board market share saw NVIDIA increase up to 79% of the discrete GPU market share in Q2 2022, up from 75% in Q1 2022, and up from 80% back this time last year in Q2 2021. AMD is back down to 20% of the discrete GPU market share, down from 24% in Q1 2022, but back to the same 20% that the company had in Q2 2021.
We also see that Intel has eaten that 1% left of the discrete GPU market share in the last couple of quarters, whereas Intel now has (probably less than) 1% of the GPU market share according to JPR data. This is the same as last quarter, but up from 0% (because Intel didn't have discrete GPUs then) back in Q2 2021.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 with 20GB memory: under $600 on sale in China
It seems that leading into NVIDIA's next-gen Ada Lovelace GPU architecture being unleashed, we're hearing all sorts of rumors on the new RTX 40 series GPUs... but now we're seeing the GeForce RTX 3080 with 20GB of GDDR6X hitting shelves in China.
MSI's custom GeForce RTX 3080 20GB VENTUS 3X OC graphics card is now making the rounds on social media, which is different from the one that hit Russian markets a year ago now in August 2021 in the form of the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti with 20GB of GDDR6X memory. To be clear: the RTX 3080 ships with 10GB of GDDR6X memory and the RTX 3080 Ti ships with 12GB of GDDR6X memory... so these new VRAM configurations are cool to see.
GPU mining is winding down for Ethereum, so crypto market farms are now switching to mining alternative cryptocurrencies or selling their hardware. Some of them are selling up, and this is how we're discovering that alternate and unreleased graphics cards were being used to mine cryptocurrency. The unreleased GeForce RTX 3080 with 20GB of GDDR6X memory is one of them.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 rumors: 16GB and 12GB variants from AIBs
NVIDIA's next-gen GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card will be available in two variants: one with 16GB of GDDR6X memory, and another with 12GB of GDDR6X memory.
According to the latest from leaker "MEGAsizeGPU" on Twitter, there will be two different PCBs for each of the GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card models. The GeForce RTX 4080 with 12GB of GDDR6X memory will feature a 10-layer PCB which will be used for both the reference design and AIC custom models.
The higher-end GeForce RTX 4080 with 16GB of GDDR6X memory will have a 12-layer PCB, while the GeForce RTX 4090 reportedly has a 14-layer PCB design. This means that the higher-end RTX 4080 with 16GB of GDDR6X memory with its 12-layer PCB matches the 12-layer PCBs on both the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090. The leaker does note that the "4080 12G has a completely different PCB design from 4080 16G".

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 SUPER teased: black cooler, but never released
We did hear rumors about NVIDIA's new GeForce RTX 3090 SUPER graphics card before it was confirmed, and later released in the form of the current flagship Ampere GPU: the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti.
NVIDIA never released the GeForce RTX 3090 SUPER, but we did hear rumors of the RTX 3090 SUPER back in July 2021 with rumors of the GeForce RTX 3090 SUPER, GeForce RTX 3080 SUPER, and GeForce RTX 3070 SUPER. Instead, NVIDIA went with the "Ti" branding over the "SUPER" release with the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, and GeForce RTX 3070 TI graphics cards.
In a new leak onto the NGA forums, we see the black frame that NVIDIA was eyeing off... eventually going with the silver frame even on the flagship GeForce RTX 3090 Ti. AMD did something similar with their fastest Navi 2X-based graphics cards in the Radeon RX 6x50 card releases. I dig the style, and wish NVIDIA made its Founders Edition graphics cards available in more color options.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 'prototype' teased, features triple-fan cooler
A prototype version of NVIDIA's upcoming AD102-based GeForce RTX 4090 has been leaked, with a triple-fan cooler teased that won't be used in the final design.
The new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 prototype was leaked by "Greymon55" but we don't know which AIB partner has made this, although it looks very similar to many different triple-fan coolers on high-end graphics cards that are already on the market. It looks very similar to triple-fan ASUS and MSI graphics card designs, but is also giving me some triple-fan Vega GPU-cooling Radeon VII vibes.
NVIDIA's new GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card has 16384 CUDA cores, 24GB of ultra-fast GDDR6X memory and up to 450W of power according to the latest rumors. We're expecting 600W to be unleashed, but that could be for a beefed-up GeForce RTX 4090 or higher-end GeForce RTX 4090 Ti that will see Ada Lovelace chewing down another 150W+ of power.

New Cyberpunk 2077 expansion (or multiplayer) may be revealed tomorrow
CD Projekt RED has confirmed it will reveal "what's next for Cyberpunk 2077" as part of a special Night City Wire stream tomorrow, September 6 at 11AM EST.
Cyberpunk 2077's long-awaited expansions could be formally unveiled--or at least teased in a meaningful capacity--during tomorrow's big Night City stream. The new Cyberpunk anime Edgerunners will be the star of the show, and rightly so since the show premieres on September 13 on Netflix, but CDPR also teases some tidbits on Cyberpunk 2077 as well.
Studio management has previously said the first Cyberpunk 2077 expansion will not release until 2023, which is years after the game's original controversial launch in 2020. No specific details were revealed about the expansion but we do know that CD Projekt spent roughly $19 million on the expansion's development so far.

Microsoft hosts summits where first-party game devs share expertise
Microsoft's first-party studios hold special game summits, which are internal mini-conferences were experts come together to share expertise and technology while opening the doors for collaboration on new projects.
Iteration is one of the most exciting things about game development, especially when it comes to first-party studios that are linked together under the same banner. We've seen this kind of collaboration between Sony's first-party studios with Insomniac's machine learning inference object deformation on the PlayStation 5, and the collaborations between Kojima Productions and Guerrilla Games with the Decima Engine, which powered both Horizon and Death Stranding.
The same kind of higher-level collaboration also exists at Microsoft's internal studios, and rightly so given the depth of the DirectX 12 in-house API toolsets and SDKs. Different devs have their own unique ways of doing things and will often share tips with other studios. Microsoft exec Matt Booty says that the company holds game summits where teams will gather and work together to solve problems and iterate on many different things.

Modders are restoring the original 2001 Duke Nukem Forever build
Talented modders are recreating the cancelled 2001 Duke Nukem Forever build that could've revitalized the franchise.
Back in 2001, 3D Realms started work on their own version of Duke Nukem Forever. The result was a chaotic mix of old-school FPS sentiments with the crude humor and flashy bombastic thrills the series is known for. 3D Realms didn't have an actual game, though--they had created a prototype demo build using Unreal Engine. The finalized game, released in 2011 from Gearbox, was markedly different.
Naturally fans want the original 2001 game, and while the source code for the old build has leaked, after a while they might just get it. With the Duke Nukem Forever 2001 Restoration Project, a team of modders and tech wizards are meticulously piecing together a playable version of DNF2001 and trying to create something that 3D Realms may have released way back when.

Best Halo mods: New VKMT mod showcase reignited my love for Halo again
Back when Halo 3 was on the misty horizon, Bungie put out one of the most incredible pre-release teasers ever made. It had a simple tagline: Believe. The UNSC was overrun. Everyone was dying, the Covenant was unstoppable. Even Chief, the indomitable Demon, was being held up like a trophy kill. But Chief wasn't dead--he woke up, ignited a plasma nade, and that was that. We believed. It was pure magic.
It's been a long time since I felt that kind of magic with Halo. Like a lot of things these days, Halo just isn't the same. It's not bad, it's just...different. It's harder to get excited about live services, you know? But there's one silver lining: Halo mods. 343i is just one team, but there's a veritable army of talented modders out there who are creating such impressive things that I believe in Halo games again. These wizards are sparking that old-school feeling that has been asleep for a long time--if you grew up with the original Xbox, you know what I'm talking about. It's the feeling you got when you booted up Halo CE and tried the campaign for the first time, or your first 16-player local LAN party with system link multiplayer.
For the past 2 years, VKMT has held a community showcase to highlight some of the best Halo mods that are either ready to play or currently in development. It's kind of like an E3 for Halo mods. The most recent showcase for 2022 is just amazing. There's some really impressive stuff in here that can add a new dimension of play to the Halo MCC games, including a fully playable recreation of Star Wars Battlefront II built into Halo MCC, Halo Doom Evolved, which merges Doom and Halo together in pixelated glory, and an incredible restored version of Halo 1 multiplayer with cut weapons as well as a bunch of extra surprises. There's even a standalone mech shooter called Wolves that's presumably a nod to the original Spartan I ORION suits.

Over 6,000 people worked on Grand Theft Auto V
Grand Theft Auto V, one of the best-selling games of all time, was made with the help of thousands upon thousands of people.
Rockstar Games recently put up a new post thanking the massive army of developers, specialists, and staffers who worked on one of the most popular and best-selling games of all time. With nearly 170 million shipments worldwide across three console generations, GTA V is less of a game and more of a kind of mini franchise in of itself; the game has generated at least $7.68 billion since 2013, and much more when the full scope of GTA Online's microtransactions are included.
That massive success came at a heavy investment of both manpower and funding. The Rockstar Games thank you post highlights just how many people it takes to make something like GTA V. By our count, more than 5,000 people worked on the game. We selected all the names and copied them into Excel to see how many columns there were, and Excel clocked in 6,820. Headers/job titles account for a sizable portion of these columns so keep that in mind.

NASA and China encounter never-before-seen problem with Moon landing
NASA recently announced its selection of potential landing sites on the lunar south pole for its Artemis 3 mission that will put humans back on the surface of the Moon.
The thirteen potential landing locations are spread across various regions of the Moon's south pole, and the problem that has presented itself is that China's space agency has also selected many of the landing locations. The overlapping of landing locations has raised important questions about how the competing space agencies/nations will coordinate their respective missions along with resource division.
The reason for the overlap is that both space agencies are selecting locations that have high elevation, good lighting conditions for mission activities by humans, and their relatively close location to permanently shadowed craters that are believed to contain water ice. Christopher Newman, professor of space law and policy at Northumbria University in the United Kingdom, spoke to SpaceNews and said that the overlapping of lunar landing sites presents a genuine opportunity for collaboration between China and the US, which would demonstrate that space exploration is more than geopolitical in nature.

First 8K footage of the Titanic releases, view it like never before
The famous passenger liner that tragically sunk in 1912 has been captured in stunning 8K video, showing the shipwreck in amazing detail.
The expedition was conducted by OceanGate Expeditions, and according to the press release found on the organization's website, the new footage will help scientists and marine archaeologists learn more about the decay of the Titanic and other features that were otherwise missed. According to Rory Golden, OceanGate Expeditions Titanic expert and veteran Titanic diver, the 8K footage has revealed new details, such as the name of the anchor manufacturer for the Titanic's portside anchor.
Other details in the video are a crane that is used to deploy the 15-ton anchor, and how that crane has collapsed due to the main mask of the ship being destroyed. PH Nargeolet, Veteran Nautile submersible pilot and Titanic diver, said that the two green dots seen in the video aren't a video artifact or error, but are produced by the laser scaling system, which allows the researchers to accurately determine the size of objects that the camera is looking at.

SpaceX successfully deploys 50+ Starlink satellites and space tug
Elon Musk's SpaceX has another successful launch under its belt as it recently deployed fifty-one new Starlink satellites and a space tug into orbit.
SpaceX has taken to its social channels and confirmed via its livestream that it's Falcon 9 rocket has completed its mission of deploying Starlink Group 4-20 and Sherpa-LTC2. The rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on Sunday night, and about 49 minutes after liftoff, it deployed the Sherpa-LTC2, followed by the deployment of the Starlink satellites 23 minutes later.
The space tug, Sherpa-LTC2, was provided by Spaceflight Industries and developed by its subsidiary Andrews Space. The space tug is carrying a payload for Boeing's Varuna Technology Demonstration Mission (Varuna-TDM), which aims to test the V-band communications for a proposed constellation of 147 non-geostationary broadband satellites. SpaceX took to its Twitter account to share updates on the launch, with it tweeting in real-time that it had completed its 40th mission of the year so far.

US official says Russia is recruiting homeless to fight in Ukraine
Russian officials are trying to get homeless people to fight in Ukraine, according to a US official who also said that Russia is planning on enlisting convicted criminals.
The unnamed US official spoke to Reuters, and said that there is considerable evidence to suggest that Russia has serious manpower shortages. The official said that the Russian military have been recruiting soldiers from homeless shelters across the country. Furthermore, the official said that Russia's defense ministry is pushing to make up the personnel shortages by compelling wounded soldiers to re-enter combat, recruiting personnel from private security companies, and paying soldiers bonuses.
It was only last Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree that increased the total number of Russia's armed forces from 1.9 million to 2.04 million. Newsweek reports that in Russian military officials left leaflets at a homeless shelter when they visited on August 17. The homelessness charity Nochlezhka spoke to Newsweek and said that the officers that were speaking to people staying at the shelter were informed by a duty officer that they weren't allowed to recruit individuals from the shelter.

International Monetary Fund outlines the monetary system of the future
The monetary system of the future will be a collaborative effort between cryptocurrency technology that has largely been demonstrated and central banks, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
A new report published to the IMF website outlines an argument that the monetary system of the future should include the technical capabilities demonstrated by cryptocurrency, but be grounded in the trust of central banks. The report was written by executives from the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and stated that any legitimate transaction that is carried out in a cryptocurrency is better with central bank money, specifically Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).
The IMF report points out many flaws of the cryptocurrency industry, writing that its "neither stable nor efficient", hardly regulated, and all of its participants aren't "accountable to society". Adding that the crypto industry is plagued with frequent fraud, theft, scams, and it propagates concerns regarding market integrity. Despite its shortcomings, the cryptocurrency industry has demonstrated incredible technology that the IMF recognizes is necessary for the monetary system of the future.

Anonymous trolls Russia by causing major traffic jam in Moscow
Hackers have disrupted the flow of traffic in Moscow, Russia, by ordering dozens of taxis to what is originally considered to be a lightly trafficked road.
VICE reports that the ground of hackers infiltrated the ride-hailing app Yandex Taxi to order taxis to Kutuzov Prospect in Moscow on Thursday. The hacking was confirmed by a Yandex spokesperson who said that on the morning of September 1, the ride-hailing service detected a hacking attempt that sent several dozen taxi drivers an order to fill in the Fili district of Moscow. Notably, the Fili district is right outside of Moscow city center and is a typical road used to enter the city center.
Moscow is no stranger to traffic jams, as the city ranks as one of the worst in the world for traffic jams. Additionally, the Yandex spokesperson said that the initial security breach was fixed in less than an hour and that improvements have been made to the system to prevent future attacks. On September 3, the Anonymous TV Twitter account, an account affiliated with the notorious hacking group Anonymous, took to Twitter to "confirm" that Anonymous carried out the attack on the Yandex Taxi in cooperation with the IT Army of Ukraine.

NASA calls off launch for most powerful rocket ever built
Over the weekend, NASA scrubbed its second launch attempt for the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket that was slated to liftoff from the surface of Earth on September 3.
NASA took to its blog and social channels to give a detailed update on the condition of the rocket and the reason why the launch was unfortunately scrubbed. Writing on NASA's blog, the space agency explained that officials detected a liquid hydrogen leak that was traced back to a fuel feed line between the SLS rocket and the stored liquid hydrogen. Engineers tried three separate times to reseal the fuel feed line, but all attempts were unsuccessful.
The space agency explains that since the second launch attempt was scrubbed, it will need to roll the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft back to the VAB before another launch attempt as the system's batteries require a reset. NASA's Associate Administrator for Exploration Systems Development, Jim Free, explained via a teleconference that the space agency doesn't go into launches such as the Artemis 1 "lightly" and that a launch doesn't happen if the agency isn't sure it's going to work.

Elden Ring will cross over with transmedia, comics and shows possible
Kadokawa Group, the Japanese multimedia giant who owns FromSoftware, confirms that Elden Ring will expand with transmedia content.
With 16.6 million copies sold, Elden Ring is an incredible success that took the gaming world by storm in early 2022. The RPG has made a long-lasting impression with its incredible and unique environments, meaningful exploration, hard-as-nails boss fights, and social engagement--it's so big that Bandai Namco has recognized it as an official franchise.
Now according to the Kadokawa Group, who wholly owns Elden Ring's developer FromSoftware, the landmark fantasy franchise will cross over into other media. In a recent Q1 earnings report, Kadokawa briefly mentions that it will "maximize the lifetime value of Elden Ring with a media mix," strongly indicating that the series will get its own cross-over media.

Tencent and Sony buy 30% of FromSoftware for $259.5 million
Sony and Tencent have made strategic investments in one of the most lauded Japanese video game developers on the planet.
FromSoftware is one of the most unique studios in gaming. The team, led by Hideaki Miyazaki, is renowned and infamous for the punishing Dark Souls and Bloodborne games--a series that's been so transformational that it has created its own "Soulsborne" genre. FromSoftware just released their most popular game ever with Elden Ring, which has amassed 16.6 million sales, and the team is now gearing up for big new projects like a new Armored Core title.
The studio has larger ambitions, though, and it needs more funding to reach them. That's why FromSoftware owner Kadokawa Group has allowed FromSoft to directly sell its shares in exchange for funding. Sony and Tencent have bought a combined stake of 30% (Sony bought 1,476 shares for $120.47 million equating to 14.09% of total shares, and Tencent bought 1,703 shares for $138.97 million equating to 16.25% of total shares).
