GDDR6 memory prices to increase 8-13% by Q3 2021: hurts GPUs, consoles

| Jun 14, 2021 9:29 PM CDT

GDDR memory prices are about to get more expensive, with TrendForce expecting an 8-13% increase in GDDR memory prices later this year -- which will hurt GPU and console prices even more.

GDDR6 memory prices to increase 8-13% by Q3 2021: hurts GPUs, consoles

Graphics DRAM (GDDR) prices increasing will hurt GDDR6 and GDDR6X-based products, with GDDR6 inside of all of AMD's new RDNA 2-based products: the Radeon RX 6000 series (Radeon RX 6700 through to the Radeon RX 6900 XT all use GDDR6 memory) as well as the next-gen consoles in Microsoft's Xbox Series X/S and Sony PlayStation 5 consoles.

On the PC side of things, NVIDIA uses the ultra-fast GDDR6X memory in half of its new Ampere-based GeForce RTX 30 series GPUs: the newly-released GeForce RTX 3070 Ti and GeForce RTX 3080 Ti graphics cards both use GDDR6X memory -- so too do the GeForce RTX 3080 and GeForce RTX 3090 graphics cards.

COLORFUL announces the first GPU History Musuem, and I'm moving in

The new GPU History Museum is now open in China, and will showcase the very start of VGA cards (Video Graphics Array) through to the first GPU (the NVIDIA GeForce 256) and into the world of the GPUs of today. It all started in the early 1980s but things really went to the next level when 3Dfx (back when the 'D' was capitalized before it changed to 3dfx) came onto the scene in the mid-1990s.

NVIDIA came onto the scene with its NV1 graphics chip in 1995, and then delivered the world's first GPU -- the GeForce 256. It dropped with so much impact that I changed my gamer handle to 'anthony256' which you can find me on Twitter, or any game -- but there are some real gems in the GPU History Museum.

GPU market so far this year has shipped 119 million units, 38% growth

| Jun 8, 2021 9:11 PM CDT

I'm sure there will be thousands of people that will read this and be angry that they haven't been able to buy a new AMD Radeon RX 6000 series or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3000 series graphics card... yet sales are still sky-high in Q1 2021.

GPU market so far this year has shipped 119 million units, 38% growth

John Peddie Research has some numbers to share, with 119 million graphics cards shipped in Q1 2021 -- a 39% increase over Q1 2020. This is pretty damn astonishing, for a few reasons: there is a gigantic everything shortage right now -- multiple parts to build these graphics cards are super hard to find right now.

Not only that, but the market is insane when it comes to pricing right now -- with NVIDIA pricing its just-launched GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition at $1199... yet the RTX 3080 Ti can be found for $2500+ in some markets. Second-hand prices are just as insane right now, the entire market is a Bizarro world... yet GPU sales are record high.

AMD's next-gen RDNA 3 + Zen 4 architectures both launching in Q4 2022

| Jun 7, 2021 9:06 PM CDT

AMD will be launching two gigantic architectures in 2022: the new Zen 4 architecture for next-gen CPUs as well as the RDNA 3 architecture for next-gen GPUs in 2022, 2023, and beyond.

AMD's next-gen RDNA 3 + Zen 4 architectures both launching in Q4 2022

In a new tweet, leaker Broley_X1 has said that RDNA 3 and Zen 4 will be "launched around the same time" and that the next-gen RDNA 3 architecture will "tape out later this year". AMD's next-gen Zen 4 architecture is based on the 5nm process node over at TSMC, and will arrive on the new AM5 socket with DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 support.

But what's interesting here is that AMD would be launching the Zen 4 + RDNA 3 architectures together, which would make for a huge end of 2022 fight against Intel and NVIDIA. Intel will have its new Alder Lake CPU platform out this year, rocking next-gen DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 technologies while AMD will be a while away yet.

MSI reveals GeForce RTX 3090 SUPRIM 35th Anniversary Limited Edition

| Jun 1, 2021 2:06 PM CDT

MSI is celebrating its 35th birthday with the announcement of its most limited edition graphics card ever, and with the GPU shortages, probably the most limited edition graphics card (literally) ever.

MSI reveals GeForce RTX 3090 SUPRIM 35th Anniversary Limited Edition

The new MSI GeForce RTX 3090 SUPRIM 35th Anniversary Limited Edition is just simply beautiful, with the company deploying a fully custom design of its TRI FROZR 2S cooling solution, with a triple-fan cooling system and 3 x 8-pin PCIe power connectors giving the card at least 350W of power.

We don't know the GPU boost and GDDR6X overclocks (if there are any) on the MSI GeForce RTX 3090 SUPRIM 35th Anniversary Limited Edition graphics card, but I'm sure that it is coming. MSI really unveiled the new card as the "SUPRIM 35th Anniversary Limited Edition" without saying it's a GeForce RTX 3090... but you can tell that from the NVLink connector, so ha!

AMD teases next-gen 3D V-Cache stack chiplet prototype, Intel killer

| May 31, 2021 10:20 PM CDT

AMD unveiled multiple products and technologies out now, coming soon, and coming out in 2022 during its virtual Computex 2021 keynote. One of the highlights is the next-gen 3D V-Cache stack chiplet technology, check it out:

AMD teases next-gen 3D V-Cache stack chiplet prototype, Intel killer

The new 3D chiplet technology will allow AMD to stack multiple chips onto each other, with the company showcasing a prototype CPU in the form of a modified Ryzen 9 5900X with 3D V-Cache and 64MB of L3 SRAM. It had a normal Zen 3 CCD right next to a 3D packaged CCD that measures in at 6mm x 6mm.

CCD sizes remain the same, but AMD drops another package on top of the CCD which packs 64MB of cache adding onto the 32MB of L3 cache on the Zen 3 CCD for a total of 96MB of L3 cache per CCD. With the two CCDs we're looking at a total of 192MB of L3 cache through the 3D stacking tech, versus just 64MB of L3 cache in stock form.

AMD's new DLSS competitor makes the GeForce GTX 1060 up to 41% faster

| May 31, 2021 10:05 PM CDT

Yeah, you read that right -- AMD's new FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is an even better version of NVIDIA's until now magic technology in the form of DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling).

AMD's new DLSS competitor makes the GeForce GTX 1060 up to 41% faster

AMD ran the newly-released Godfall on the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card at 2560 x 1440 (1440p) on the Epic preset, with the GTX 1060 hitting 27FPS average. But with FSR enabled, the GTX 1060 has a 41% boost in performance and hits a much more playable 38FPS average.

Why the GeForce GTX 1060? AMD chose the GeForce GTX 1060 as it is the most commonly used graphics card on Steam, so it is the perfect flex of FSR muscle that it needs to fling shot an arrow into the backyard of every gamer on the planet saying "hey, so FSR kicks ass and you should know about it".

AMD announces its DLSS competitor: FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR)

| May 31, 2021 10:00 PM CDT

AMD has just made its DLSS competitor official with the announcement of FidelityFX Super Resolution, or FSR -- because I don't want to be typing out FidelityFX Super Resolution and Deep Learning Super Sampling every sentence.

AMD announces its DLSS competitor: FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR)

The introduction of FSR is very similar to NVIDIA and its DLSS technology, but in some ways better and in other ways worse. First off, AMD used Godfall in its presentation powered by the Radeon RX 6800 XT at 4K on the Epic preset with ray tracing enabled.

In its 4K native form, the Radeon RX 6800 XT was capable of 49FPS average, but with FSR set to Performance, we're looking at a giant leap up to 150FPS average.

AMD Radeon RX 6800M: mobile RDNA 2 runs Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p 60FPS

| May 31, 2021 10:00 PM CDT

AMD has just announced its new Radeon RX 6000M series of mobile RDNA 2 graphics cards, with the flagship Radeon RX 6800M leading the pack.

AMD Radeon RX 6800M: mobile RDNA 2 runs Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p 60FPS

The new Radeon RX 6800M will find its way inside of next-gen gaming laptops over the coming months, offering 40 Compute Units (compared to 72 CUs on the desktop RX 6800 XT). The GPU has a Game Clock of up to 2300MHz, while AMD packs in 12GB of GDDR6 memory and 96MB of Infinity Cache.

This isn't much of a cut down from the desktop Radeon RX 6800 XT which has 16GB of GDDR6 memory and 128MB of Infinity Cache. Not bad AMD... not bad at all. As for performance, AMD is wanting to nail the 1440p max settings market and the Radeon RX 6800M does just that.
