Mass Effect: Andromeda quests inspired by Witcher 3

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 13, 2017 12:25 PM CST

One of my principal worries about Mass Effect: Andromeda is quantity over quality. I look at BioWare's track record with Dragon Age: Inquisition, whose grindy scope really turned me off eventually, and I see this carrying forward with the new Mass Effect. But BioWare says that the quests have been carefully tailored to be more meaningful--not unlike CD Projekt RED's magnum opus RPG.

Mass Effect: Andromeda quests inspired by Witcher 3

"We are approaching the completionist aspect very differently [in Mass Effect: Andromeda], because we've done and learned a lot from Inquisition," BioWare's Patrice Condominas told PC Gamer in a recent interview.

In fact, BioWare has been inspired by games like The Witcher 3 in terms of impact, depth, and overall resonating experiences. As a result the new Mass Effect should have more meat on its bones than grindy fetch quests and the like.

The world's first 10-core smartphone is nearly here

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Feb 13, 2017 11:44 AM CST

Qualcomm might hold the record for the most powerful, tech-filled processor in the world with its upcoming Snapdragon 835 - but it only has 8 processing cores.

Not that it matters, but it's a great technological achievement to have more CPU cores in a system-on-chip (SoC), with Chinese smartphone maker Vernee teasing during CES 2017 last month tht they would have the first MediaTek Helio X30-powered smartphone that would be released in February.

Well, it's February now - and we're learning more information on the new smartphone. The Helio X30 itself is a 10-core smartphone, made on the 10nm process, featuring IMG 7XTP-Mt4 GPU which is powerful on its own. We should expect MediaTek's new Helio X30 to be just as good as the best chips from Qualcomm, Samsung, and Huawei.

AMD Ryzen motherboards are CHEAP, ASUS is just $69-$209

Anthony Garreffa | Motherboards | Feb 13, 2017 10:45 AM CST

AMD is so, so very close to the unveiling of its next-gen Ryzen CPUs and now we're finally hearing about what I've personally said is the most important part of Ryzen's success: motherboard prices.

ASUS will have 4 motherboards ready for Ryzen processors on February 24, with the ASUS Prime B350M-A priced at $69, the Prime B350-PLUS at $89, the Prime X370-PRO at $149, and finally, the higher-end Crosshair VI Hero priced at just $209.

Doubled with the fact that you can pick up a 6C/12T Ryzen 5 1600X for $259, or the higher-end 8C/16T Ryzen 7 1700X for $389... these motherboard prices are great. It's going to open up a world of enthusiast gaming for people who don't have the money to sink into an expensive X99-based platform from Intel for the 10C/20T processors.

HMD is bringing back the Nokia N-series

Lana Jelic | Mobile Devices | Feb 13, 2017 10:37 AM CST

The Nokia 6 proved to be a huge hit in China with devices selling out in record times.

But HMD has even bigger plans for Nokia's comeback. According to the new leak, the company plans to bring back the Nokia N-series. This is the same series that spawned the N95, N900, and N8 all of which were wildly successful devices globally and set the standard for smartphones today.

Samsung working on a project to bring the Note 8

Lana Jelic | Mobile Devices | Feb 13, 2017 9:32 AM CST

After the Note7 fiasco, there was speculation of what will happen with the Note line and whether Samsung will discontinue it which would be a shame since the Note7 was a wonderful phone (apart from the exploding batteries).

Earlier this year, DJ Koh, Samsung's Mobile Chief, confirmed that the Note isn't dead and we will be seeing the Galaxy Note 8 later this year.

Nioh fourth boss guide: how to kill Nue

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 13, 2017 3:30 AM CST

Nioh's boss fights get progressively more difficult and then you come across Nue, a brutal chimera that summons devastating lightning from the heavens and creates tons of Yokai Realm pools to wreck your day (and your ki). But he's far from invincible, and he can actually be beaten quite efficiently with a simple method. We'll teach you that method here today.

Nioh fourth boss guide: how to kill Nue

Defeating bosses often requires abstract thought and the ability to use your surroundings to your advantage. In pure Ninja Gaiden style, Nue's boss fight really forces you to use your environment to take out your quarry. This particular battle really opened my eyes on how to approach enemies in Nioh, and taught me a newfound respect for the game: it's not just about perfect timing, strikes, caution and general mastery of fluid combat, but a total big picture focus--using strategy when you can, where you can.

Nue killed me about 8 times before I tried this method, and I was able to kill the mythical beast in my second try. The method is rather simple and revolves around one concept: creating a protective cage for yourself in the level's porches and striking slow, steady, and consistently.

Hitman dev may be working on new IP for Nintendo Switch

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 13, 2017 2:23 AM CST

Hitman developer IO Interactive is apparently working on a fresh new IP that will be based in Unreal Engine, not its new next-gen Glacier 2 Engine that was used to make the latest Hitman game. This interesting move may mean IOI's new IP will be on Nintendo's fresh Switch console-handheld hybrid.

Hitman dev may be working on new IP for Nintendo Switch

According to a recent job listing posted by IO Interactive, the devs are working on a new IP outside of any current series or franchises. "The team is currently working on a new unannounced IP and is responsible for prototyping different mechanics for the Hitman team. We are looking for a programmer to help the team drive the project forward," reads the listing, which has now been altered and scrubbed clean of any mention of the IP. "You will work closely with a small team of designers to prototype gameplay mechanics in Unreal Engine"

The position is for a "Gameplay Programmer for Incubation/R&D," which is exactly what it sounds like: a programmer who works on early (incubated) design concepts for new Hitman content updates and the new IP. So where does the Nintendo Switch tie in here?

Netflix is resurrecting Castlevania's Dracula in 2017

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 13, 2017 12:21 AM CST

I love Castlevania. These old-school sidescrollers taught me the meaning of true skill before the Souls series dropped. I've beaten all the Castlevanias I own including Castlevania I-III, Dracula X, Super Castlevania IV, and Symphony of the Night. So when I heard Netflix is going to make a violent, gritty and dark anime miniseries based in the series, I was on the brink of forgiving Konami for it's transgressions. Yes, that's how excited I am for this project.

Netflix is resurrecting Castlevania's Dracula in 2017

The new Castlevania mini-series won't have any annoying real-life nonsense: it's a fully-fledged anime. I've long thought this is the only real way to capture the macabre mystique of the franchise. The project is an "R-rated as f*ck" ultraviolent anime adaptation of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, and Netflix confirmed the first episode will launch this year.

Netflix says the series will follow "the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself." A second season will come in 2018.

Husband cheats on wife, sues Uber for $48 million

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Feb 12, 2017 11:29 PM CST

A bit of a light hearted story - well, at least in a way - as a man is suing Uber for causing his divorce. Yeah, you read that right.

The French businessman is suing the ridesharing giant for a huge $48 million, after a notification bug with the Uber app let his wife spy on his whereabouts. The man used his wife's smartphone to order Ubers, and then signed out of the app - but, the notifications continued rolling in, after he thought he had signed out.

His wife would've have learned about the affairs from the Uber notifications, with all of his orders, drive names, license plate, and arrival times. His real-time location wouldn't have been tracked, but if he said he'd be working late at the office or catching up with friends for a drink, his wife would know he's lying from his Uber notifications.

iPhone X won't have a Home button, according to patent

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Feb 12, 2017 9:29 PM CST

We're getting to see more of Apple's hopefully revolutionary iPhone X, through a new patent application by Apple that uses a new material that's described as "deformable touch-sensitive quantum tunneling material", reports Patently Apple.

The new material could see Apple not using a physical Home button on the iPhone X, and it would allow the company to finally make a waterproof iPhone, something smartphone owners have been wanting for years.

Apple could also release a new 'Smart iPhone Case' which would feature touch-sensitive material, with the second layer "comprising a second touch-sensitive material disposed below the first layer. An electrical resistance of the first and second layers changes differently in response to application of a force to the first layer", reports Patently Apple.

Verizon Unlimited: $80 per month up to 22GB @ full speed

Anthony Garreffa | Connectivity & Cloud | Feb 12, 2017 7:55 PM CST

Verizon has just announced its new unlimited data plan, simply known as Verizon Unlimited - which will cost $80 for an individual line, or $45 per line for a four-line family plan.

The company is calling the new Verizon Unlimited pricing as "introductory", which require both paperless billing and AutoPay to be enabled. The plan will offer 22GB at full LTE speeds, but once you hit the data cap you'll have your speeds throttled, and Verizon will de-prioritize you on their network.

If you plan on using the Verizon Unlimited plan as a hotspot, you'll get 10GB at LTE speeds - and 500MB per day of roaming data in Mexico and Canada. Additionally, you can pay $10 for a 500MB LTE TravelPass that will work anywhere in the world.

Samsung to release Galaxy S8 in March, says report

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Feb 12, 2017 6:30 PM CST

Samsung is gearing up for the launch of its new flagship smartphone, with reports that there will be the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+, not the S8 edge like we've come to know and love from the two previous generation Galaxy smartphones.

But now a new report from The Wall Street Journal is teasing that Samsung will unleash its new Galaxy S8 in March, with an unveiling event in New York City on March 28. Samsung will have Galaxy S8 and S8+ units ready for April 21, which is perfect - my wife's birthday, and her S7 needs replacing.

We can expect Qualcomm's it-has-everything-including-the-kitchen-sink Snapdragon 835 processor, edged displays, 3.5mm headphone jack (because that's a thing now, you know), bezel free display, and a rear fingerprint sensor. A virtual assistant will also be included, in the form of something called S-Assistant.

The Order: 1886 dev teases new game, coming to Steam

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Feb 12, 2017 5:11 PM CST

The Order: 1886 was one of the better looking games on the PS4, with developer Ready at Dawn now teasing their new game: Deformers.

Deformers is an online multiplayer combat arena game that was meant to be coming out on February 14, but Ready at Dawn delayed it at the last minute. Deformer's Creative Director took to NeoGAF to explain: "Hello everyone! The delay will be short, we just need some more time to properly stress-test the game. We will announce the actual and final 🙂 release date soon".

The post continued: "We are ramping up to do an open beta on Steam, that way we get to test our infrastructure and everyone that wishes to will be able to try it out and discover why we love this game so much".

AMD Ryzen leaks: R7 1800X costs $499, line up is STRONG

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Feb 12, 2017 12:40 PM CST

AMD is mere weeks away from launching its new offensive on the CPU market, with Ryzen leaks coming daily now - and here we are, with the pricing, specs, clocks, and more on AMD's upcoming Ryzen CPUs.

We know that Ryzen will be led by the R7 1800X flagship CPU, with the rumored price of $499 from last year reportedly sticking - the $499 processor will offer a base frequency of 3.6GHz, while it will boost up to 4GHz under Turbo, and 4GHz+ with better cooling.

The new leaks are courtesy of an internal product list from a Chinese retailer, with the R7 1800X priced at a hot-damn-is-it-too-good-to-be-true $499, while the R7 1700X is $110 cheaper at $389 - dropping its overclocking abilities slightly, but the $319 processor in the R7 1700 is going to be a BEAST... 3GHz+ with 3.7GHz offered under Turbo, and the same 8C/16T configuration.

Moto G5 pricing in Europe leaked ahead of launch

Lana Jelic | Mobile Devices | Feb 12, 2017 9:28 AM CST

The prices of the upcoming Moto G5 in Europe have leaked. Roland Quandt, a popular tipster, has leaked the pricing of the device in Europe and, if correct, we are looking at lower prices than those of the Moto G4.

According to the leak, the Moto G5 pricing will start at 189 euros (around $201). This is the price for the base model that is expected to come with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

The price for the 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage version is expected to be 209 euros (around $222). The price of the Moto G4 with the same amount of RAM and internal storage was 249 euros (around $265).

AMD's new Ryzen CPU coolers: new Wraith, 95/65W versions

Anthony Garreffa | Cases, Cooling & PSU | Feb 12, 2017 5:14 AM CST

I've just written an article teasing the performance of AMD's upcoming R7 1700X processor, offering some great performance for $389 - but what about the coolers that AMD will have on offer?

Well, we're finally seeing a tease of the High Performance (Wraith cooler), the 95W TDP cooler, and the lower-end 65W TDP cooler. These coolers should hopefully be sold separately, allowing AMD to offer the Ryzen CPUs at a cheaper price point thanks to not including the cooler in the retail box.

RTG boss Raja Koduri was spotted in a photo laying down in front of a new Ryzen PC - ogling over the new CPU cooler, and now we know why.

AMD Ryzen 7 1700X benchmarks, crazy performance for $389

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Feb 12, 2017 3:27 AM CST

AMD is weeks away from launching its next-gen Ryzen processors, and now we're finally seeing some synthetic benchmarks on the new CPU - and while this is still a qualifications sample, the results shouldn't be too far away from what we will see from the retail CPUs.

AMD Ryzen 7 1700X benchmarks, crazy performance for $389

In the leaked benchmarks, the R7 1700X is clocked at 3.4GHz with Turbo mode disabled - meaning results should be higher than this when in the hands of gamers and consumers. The Ryzen 7 1700X was tested on an entry-level MSI A320 motherboard, with relaxed memory timings of 17-17-17-39 2T @ 2400MHz.

As you can see from the results, AMD has quite the winner on its hands with the R7 1700X, which should be priced at just $389 - easily beating or tying with Intel's current mainstream champion: the Core i7-7700K.

Nioh complete stance guide

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 11, 2017 6:33 PM CST

Nioh's combat system is robust and layered to the point where the game takes on a whole new dimension as you become more skilled. But that very progression hinges entirely on your ability to learn the basics of three key stances, which are the main positions you'll use to dispatch supernatural and samurai foes alike.

Nioh complete stance guide

The stance system can be a little confusing at first. In a game like Nioh, confusion often leads to death or wasted time, and both are pretty frustrating. In this guide I am to dispel some of that annoyance by clearly outlining how each of the three main pillars to combat are fully balanced and optimized, and give you the tools you need to wreak havoc in demon-ridden feudal Japan.

In many ways Nioh's combat is like a graceful dance of death. There's a fluid harmony in its strikes and dodges that really exemplifies the ancient art of war, while also incorporating key strategic and tactical maneuvers to give creative players an even bigger edge. With this crash course in the basic foundations of stances you'll be on your way to honing that edge to a fine razor-sharp blade to slice and dice yokai everywhere.

Samsung ditches 'Edge': Welcome Samsung Galaxy S8+

Lana Jelic | Mobile Devices | Feb 11, 2017 3:12 PM CST

There were some arguments whether Samsung would name their next phone the Galaxy S8 Edge since both the S8 and the bigger version will have a curved display.

Now, Evan Blass has confirmed that we will not see a Samsung Galaxy S8 Edge this year. Instead, the company will go with a name Galaxy S8+. The company decided to put a plus sign in the name of the phone instead of naming it "Plus," as Apple does with its phones.
