Samsung's new Galaxy S8+ spotted in gold variant
Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are just weeks away, with various leaks teasing its slick style with barely any bezel - and its super powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor - but now, we're looking down the sights of the gold colored variant.
Someone has gotten their hands-on a purported Galaxy S8+ smartphone in gold, rocking a huge 6.2-inch display - while the Galaxy S8 will have a smaller 5.7-inch display, both not being that much larger thanks to the all-display front. There's no physical Home button on the Galaxy S8 and S8+, a reverse decision on the S7 and S7 edge with its physical Home button.
Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S8 later this month, with a full retail and shipping push in the third week of April.

Brazilian store sparks rumors about the purple Galaxy S8
Just last week we reported that the Galaxy S8 will come in a purple color, among others. The rumor was reported by leaker Roland Quandt, who has been quite reliable in the past.
Now, the Brazilian online store Submarino posted a poll on their website asking the visitors to choose their favorite color option for the upcoming flagship, and the colors are Black, Silver, and Amethyst. This probably confirms the rumors, and it will certainly be interesting to see the new color option for Samsung's devices.
Amethyst is a bit unusual, but that just might be a trend this year since Huawei introduced a not-so-typical green version of the P10 and P10 Plus.

Samsung to start the foldable phone production this year
A recent report has suggested that Samsung will start mass production of foldable smartphones in H2 2018. New rumors from Korea say that the company will reportedly start producing thousands of prototypes in Q3 this year.
This means that Samsung might show the first prototypes at IFA 2017 in Berlin, but have in mind those would be early prototypes. The company has already faced some challenges with the development of the foldable phones. The main reason for the delay is said to be technical issues involving a key component of foldable smartphones.
Samsung has already shown the foldable screen technology that has four different modes - rollable, bent, curved, and foldable.

NVIDIA's orders TSMC to make next-gen Volta GPU on 12nm
NVIDIA just launched its Pascal-based GeForce GTX 1080 Ti with a huge performance crown earned at $699, and now we're hearing that TSMC is taking orders for next-gen HPC (high-performance computing) chips for AI applications from both NVIDIA, and Qualcomm.
The new report is coming from DigiTimes, which reports: "TSMC will fabricate NVIDIA's next generation Volta GPU using a 12nm process, said the paper, which added that the Volta GPU will be paired with NVIDIA's Xavier supercomputer chips for self-driving car applications".
NVIDIA is currently having TSMC produce its 256 core Pascal-based GPU and dual-core Denver 2 CPUs for their recent Jetson TX2 supercomputing platform, all on the 16nm process. NVIDIA's next big leap will be to Volta, on the smaller 12nm node - where things will really get interesting.

Intel acquires self-driving car firm for $15.3 billion
Intel is making a massive investment into autonomous car technology, acquiring Israeli self-driving car firm Mobileeye for a huge $15.3 billion.
Mobileye has technology inside of 27 carmakers' vehicles, with technology from cameras to sensors around the car, to emergency braking technology, lane assistance systems, and more. Intel has been working with Mobileye for a while, teaming with BMW last year to make a fully autonomous car by 2021.
Intel isn't just throwing down its $15 billion investment for nothing, as the company sees the autonomous car market becoming a mammoth $70 billion market by 2030. Intel boss Brian Krzanich made it very clear that by combining Intel's processing power with Mobileye's advanced automotive computer vision systems, and its partnerships with carmakers, as something transformative. Krzanich said: "Together, we can accelerate the future of autonomous driving with improved performance in a cloud-to-car solution at a lower cost for automakers".

Quake Champions goes free-to-play, champions cost money
Quake was my original FPS love, with thousands of hours pumped into the original (and rocking my 3dfx Voodoo 4MB graphics card at the time) and into its sequels, Quake II and Quake III Arena. Now, we have the news that Quake Champions, being developed by id Software once again, will be a free-to-play game.
We've been introduced to one of the Champions already, but id Software's Tim Willits has come out saying: "At its core, it's a free-to-play game," Willits said, "with the option to buy the Champion Pack and just get in and play with all the Champions. There are a number of Quake players that just want to play their Quake, right? And they are familiar with the business model of our previous games, and they are totally fine. 'I want to buy the game. I want to start playing. I want to have access to all the Champions".
He continued: "But then we also understand that we want to get as many people into the game as possible, especially outside of North America and Western Europe, where we have a massive fan base. So we want to have the flexibility to have a free-to-play option for those people".

AMD: Ryzen 7 1700X, 1800X reporting temps incorrectly
AMD has just issued a new community update on its brand new Ryzen CPUs, addressing issues over thread scheduling on Ryzen processors - but also detailed the problems over temperature reporting on Ryzen.
AMD explains in the post that the "primary temperature reporting sensor of the AMD Ryzen processor is a sensor called 'T Control,' or tCTL for short. The tCTL sensor is derived from the junction (Tj) temperature-the interface point between the die and heatspreader-but it may be offset on certain CPU models so that all models on the AM4 Platform have the same maximum tCTL value. This approach ensures that all AMD Ryzen processors have a consistent fan policy".
The post continues in detail, with AMD explaining: "Specifically, the AMD Ryzen 7 1700X and 1800X carry a +20°C offset between the tCTL° (reported) temperature and the actual Tj° temperature. In the short term, users of the AMD Ryzen 1700X and 1800X can simply subtract 20°C to determine the true junction temperature of their processor. No arithmetic is required for the Ryzen 7 1700. Long term, we expect temperature monitoring software to better understand our tCTL offsets to report the junction temperature automatically".

AMD addresses Windows 10's thread scheduler with Ryzen
Now that AMD has launched its Ryzen processors, some niggly issues have popped up with one of them being the underwhelming performance at 1080p. AMD has hit back with an official statement, saying: "the Windows 10 thread scheduler is operating properly for Zen".
AMD continues, saying that they "do not presently believe there is an issue with the scheduler adversely utilizing the logical and physical configurations of the architecture". There have been some differences between Windows 7 and Windows 10 performance over the thread scheduler, but AMD added that they "do not believe there is an issue with scheduling differences between the two versions of Windows" and that any performance differences between Windows 7 and Windows 10, come down to the difference between the operating systems - and not the Ryzen CPU.
AMD also talked about the SMT (the multi-threaded part of Ryzen) and the negative performance in some games, with the company saying that SMT offers a "neutral/positive benefit" in a range of processors. AMD added: "For the remaining outliers, AMD again sees multiple opportunities within the codebases of specific applications to improve how this software addresses the "Zen" architecture. We have already identified some simple changes that can improve a game's understanding of the "Zen" core/cache topology, and we intend to provide a status update to the community when they are ready".

Shadow of War dev: Xbox Scorpio is a powerful beast
Microsoft has been pumping some serious hype into its upcoming Project Scorpio console, with the company touting it is the most powerful console ever created - with Middle-earth: Shadow of War developer Monolith Productions reiterating Microsoft's comments on the console.
Shadow of War was recently confirmed as the first Xbox Scorpio title, with Microsoft's backing, with it featuring 4K and HDR technology. During an interview with GamesRadar, Monolith Productions boss Kevin Stephens said: "I can't speak for Microsoft, but from our point of view they seem very committed to, you know, if you buy an Xbox One, whether it's a One, or an S, or a Scorpio you're going to buy a game and [be able to] play it on any of them. That seems very consistent with our experience of working on those platforms".
In previous interviews, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has teased with Project Scorpio: "We've found nothing false about their claims about the hardware. As far as we can tell, it will be the most powerful console ever created when it launches - unless somebody has an announcement I don't know about".

Sony Pictures reboots 'Dragon Tattoo' franchise
Director David Fincher's spectacular Hollywood adaptation of Stieg Larsson's 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' series is finally set to continue nearly a decade from the release of the last film, albeit in a full reboot minus Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara and David Fincher.
According to The Wrap, Sony Pictures has hired 'Don't Breathe' director Fede Alvarez to take the helm of the fourth book in the series; 'The Girl in the Spider's Web', which has locked in a late 2018 release date. The 2009 adaptation grossed $232 million worldwide, but was seen as a disappointment based on the strong cultural awareness, coupled with the budget excesses for the r-rated film incurred by the infamously fussy director.
'The Girl in the Spider's Web' is set to hit cinemas in October 2018.

Project Scorpio Game DVR records native 4K 60FPS
Microsoft's new Project Scorpio console may be the real deal when it comes to native 4K gaming, despite having only a scaled, console-grade 6TFLOP GPU. Reports indicate that Microsoft's "monster" 4K console could record gameplay footage at native 2160p 60FPS as well as stream 4K content.
Windows Central received another tip from its Xbox sources that Project Scorpio will be capable of streaming and recording gameplay footage at 4K 60FPS. The outlet reports that Project Scorpio will leverage HEVC and VP9 codecs for decoding 4K video streams, as well as HEVC encoding for 3840 x 2160 resolution 60FPS Game DVR captures.
"Microsoft's Beam streaming service has been running public 4K stream tests for some time, and it's now fair to assume it will not only be PC streamers who will benefit. Project Scorpio's Game DVR will allow you to stream and record clips in 4K resolution with 60FPS, according to our sources, which is a massive, massive step up from the 720p, 30FPS you get on the current Xbox One," Windows Central's Jez Corden reports.
