'Star Trek: Discovery' finds its captain
After a series of delays which has seen the upcoming 'Star Trek' series abandon its planned launch date, it finally looks like production is set to jump to warp speed.
According to Deadline, 'Harry Potter' and 'The Patriot' star Jason Isaacs has been cast as Captain Lorca for the upcoming series, joining other legendary 'Star Trek' captains such as Picard, Kirk, and Janeway.
Set 10 years before the events of the original series, 'Star Trek: Discovery' is set to premiere 13 episodes on the CBS All Access platform in the U.S. and on Netflix in other territories later in the year.

James Cameron confirms another 'Avatar 2' delay
In a shock to absolutely no-one, it seems that the first sequel to the 2009 smash-hit (and highest grossing film of all time) 'Avatar' is going to miss its oft-delayed release date of Christmas 2018.
Coming up to 8 years since the first film hit cinema screens, Director James Cameron has told The Toronto Star that the previously announced release date of December 2018 "is not happening". After all the delays, its understandable that the veteran director is reticent to set a new date saying "We haven't announced a firm release date... what people have to understand is that this is a cadence of releases. So, we're not making 'Avatar 2,' we're making 'Avatar 2,' '3,' '4,' and '5.' It's an epic undertaking. It's not unlike building the Three Gorges dam."
At some point in the indeterminable future, we might finally get to see 'Avatar 2" and its further 3 sequels... maybe.

Switch dock uses Mobility DisplayPort to HDMI converter
The Nintendo Switch dock only has one small circuit board that essentially acts as a pass through for video and power. Thanks to a recent iFixit teardown, we know exactly what makes the Switch dock tick.
Many gamers have wondered why they can't just connect the Switch directly to their TV and completely circumvent the dock altogether. As we've reported long ago, the Switch's cradle is required as it not only passes the video and audio signals from the console to the TV, but supplies power from the AC adapter to the Switch itself. This synergy is harmonious, and uses the newer USB Type-C protocol for console tethering and standard HDMI out for 1080p HDTVs.
Interestingly enough, the Switch dock has a specific chip in it that facilitates the video conversion: Megachips' STDP2550 Mobility DisplayPort (MyDP) to HDMI Converter.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild looks CRAZY on the PC in 4K
I've been spending hours per day playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on my Nintendo Switch, and I've got to say I'm completely capitivated by the game - the world, and how damn good it feels to play in portable mode on the Switch - and not docked, on my TV.
Well, while it looks great - my super-beefy gaming PC with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card and AMD Ryzen 7 1800X processor are sitting here - doing nothing. But when footage of Zelda: Breath of the Wild popped up on Wii U emulator Cemu 1.7.3, running in 4K, my attention was quickly thrown to the footage.
The performance isn't too good, but we're talking about a software emulator, emulating the Wii U version of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The developer has said it will take around 2-4 months to get the game in a state where it can be played all of the way through, explaining: "Zelda will probably be in a state where you can play it from start to finish in 2-4 months. Note that fixing ALL bugs in the game can take years but it should be comparable to Xenoblade Chronicles X in a few months".

MSI unveils their new GeForce GTX 1080 Ti range of cards
MSI has just unveiled their range of upcoming GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics cards, with 5 new cards in the line up - being led by the Gaming X series, and flanked by the Armor and SeaHawk EK series of cards.
MSI will be changing the look of its upcoming GeForce GTX 1080 Aero - with a slicker black/green style, while the GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X should arrive just how we expected it with the black/red color scheme and aggressively styled card. To the right we have what looks like a beautiful GTX 1080 SeaHawk EK graphics card that features a waterblock, and MSI's first custom PCB for Big Pascal. To the right, we have the normal GTX 1080 Ti SeaHawk.
We should expect most of these cards coming soon, so prepare for an onslaught of GTX 1080 Ti reviews.

Mass Effect: Andromeda launch trailer drops out of orbit
After years of waiting, reporting, and hype, BioWare's latest launch trailer reminds us that Mass Effect: Andromeda is really happening and it's dropping quite soon.
The Mass Effect: Andromeda launch trailer is more cinematic and thematic than previous reels, and is meant to be more accessible to consumers and gamers alike. But I have to say it's a bit...weird. The song just doesn't fit (both the lyrics and the tunes, considering this is a game about finding new worlds to co-exist alongside other aliens...and in reality, you're the alien out in the Andromeda Galaxy) and seems off. It just doesn't seem like something I'd pick for a Mass Effect game.
The actual footage, however, gives us a glimpse at what to expect from the game's visuals. This is where the game shines. BioWare confirms that the footage was captured in-engine despite most of it being cinematic sequences, and the footage is representative of the final product we'll be playing on March 21. I'm guessing it was captured on a high-end PC outfitted with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10 series GPU.

AMD Radeon RX Vega beats GTX 1080 in leaked tests
AMD would've been shaken to the core over the beyond impressive GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, but could they be playing defensive with their one-two punch with Ryzen CPUs now out - and the upcoming Radeon RX Vega to be lurking as a monster?
According to the latest benchmarks, Radeon RX Vega has been spotted with 4096 stream processors and 8GB of HBM2 on a 2048-bit memory bus (half that of the 4096-bit memory bus on the Fury X, so we could be looking at 'Little Vega'). The benchmarks teases some impressive performance, with the SiSoft benchmark showing 9414Mpix/s of half-float GP compute performance - versus 7551Mpix/s on the GTX 1080.
The same dominance is there - right through to double-float GP compute performance on this version of RX Vega with 806Mpix/s compared to the GTX 1080 and its 565Mpix/s in comparison.

Metroid Switch game? Reggie Fils-Aime kindles the hope
Super Smash Bros. showing up on Nintendo's new Switch handheld-console hybrid is a given. But what about franchises like Metroid? It could happen--Nintendo hasn't killed the dream of a new adventure starring Samus on the Switch.
Nintendo America President Reggie Fils-Aime told Katie Linendoll some interesting things during a PAX East interview. In fact, Reggie said something particularly interesting about how Nintendo wants to push out one of each of its classic franchises on new platforms (including the Switch). This should include obvious entries like Super Smash Bros, but what about Metroid, which has been rather neglected lately?
Katie: Super Smash Bros. for Switch?

Project Scorpio to supersample graphics on 1080p HDTVs
Although Microsoft's 'monster' new Project Scorpio console is specifically made for 4K HDR gaming, regular 1080p HDTV owners will still benefit from the system's beefy graphics horsepower.
Windows Central has confirmed what we've thought for a while now: Project Scorpio will supersample in-game graphics to make Xbox One titles look better on 1080p HDTVs. Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro also supersamples games played on non-4K displays to improve visual fidelity at the cost of frame rates. Thanks to its raw 6TFLOPs of compute power that may harness AMD's new Polaris RX 580 GPU, however, Project Scorpio likely won't suffer the FPS hit like the PS4 Pro.
But there's just one trade-off about Project Scorpio's supersampling: it'll be exclusive to games with True 4K assets. This is because Project Scorpio will likely down-sample the 4K assets to fit on a 1080p display. How Microsoft handles this down-sampling is absolutely critical to maintain proper performance and ensure the Xbox One and/or Xbox One S consoles don't enjoy better 1080p frame rate performance than Project Scoprio. For example, the older 2013 PS4 launch model will actually maintain higher FPS in 1080p in games like Watch Dogs 2 which are supersampled on the PS4 Pro at the cost of frame rates.

GTX 1060 plays Mass Effect Andromeda at 1080p 30FPS
NVIDIA has recently released a more refined PC spec requirements list for Mass Effect: Andromeda, revealing that minimum spec PCs with a GeForce GTX 660 may be stuck at 720p, and EA predicts rigs with NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1060 will only hit 1080p 30FPS at High preset settings.
Mass Effect: Andromeda looks to be quite the demanding PC game, and it looks like BioWare and EA have teamed up with NVIDIA to get the most out of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 10 series GPUs. For example, the minimum GTX 660 GPU spec will only play the game in 1280 x 720p at Low settings, and a GTX 1060 may not even be enough to hit 1080p 60FPS in Ultra presets.
NVIDIA recently published Mass Effect: Andromeda's PC spec requirements and graphics options, which you can find below. These specs only mentioned the graphical presets and the resolution, not the estimated FPS. However, EA published an interesting graph outlining the estimated FPS for the minimum and recommended system requirements.

Pokemon GO player finds rare creature, has heart attack
Pokemon GO is still a popular game, and maybe a little too much for 67-year-old Liang Weiming who had a level 28 account and over 200 creatures - as he found the rarest of Pokemon: Lapras, and then suffered a fatal heart attack.
According to Weiming's wife, the excitement of finding the rare Pokemon caused him to have a heart attack on the spot. He was transported to the Singapore General Hospital, but was unable to be saved, passing away shortly after he arrived. Weiming also suffered from heart disease and cardiac issues, so the excitement from finding Lapras pushed him over the edge.
I guess the one good thing to take away from this is that he died doing something he truly loved - so much so, that when he caught that elusive Pokemon, it killed him. RIP, Liang Weiming.

Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ design = no waste of bezel at all
Samsung is only a couple of weeks away from launching the Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones, which are sure to be some of the best-selling smartphones of 2017 - and now, we're getting a better look at the design of the new smartphone up against the previous Galaxy smartphones, and the current iPhones.
From left to right, we have the current iPhone 7 Plus, the upcoming Galaxy S8+ and S8, and iPhone 7. As you can see, the upcoming Galaxy S8+ and its massive 6.2-inch display will be in the same - if not slightly smaller size than the iPhone 7 Plus - which for its huge design, has only a 5.5-inch display. Apple has a huge chunk of bezel around both of its smartphones, while Samsung seems to be running away from the bezel with some beautifully designed smartphones.
Samsung is expected to reveal its next-gen Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ later this month, with a release of April 28.

Google's new 4K digital board eyes down Surface Hub
Microsoft has a competitor to its expensive, but glorious Surface Hub - which arrives in a $9000 model, but can be purchased as an 84-inch touchscreen beast for $21,000 - while Google is targeting Surface Hub with its new Jamboard.
Google's new Jamboard is a 4K-capable 55-inch smart TV that you can draw on, capable of taking 16 simultaneous touch points, Google Cast abilities, a built-in camera (for the CIA to watch you and your important meetings through), NFC, handwriting abilities, and even shape recognition.
Jamboard will cost $5000, alongside a $600 annual "support fee" - but considering Surface Hub starts at $9000 and scales to $21,000 - Google has a good chance of scooping some of that Surface Hub marketshare away from Microsoft with Jamboard.
