Microtransactions to make 25% of Ubisofts FY2019 revenue
Ubisoft expects in-game player spending to make up 25% of its total revenue in its next fiscal year, showing just how far the company has come in such a short time.
Ubisoft today announced its yearly financial earnings, reporting total sales earnings of $1.61 billion (1.45 billion euros) for its last FY2017 year, of which digital made up almost 50% of that revenue via microtransactions and in-game spending. But what's even more interesting is the company's roadmap for future earnings, and how it expects digital player investment to become even more of a significant earner.
The French games company forecasts that PRI (player recurring spending) will make up a steep 25% of its total earnings for Fiscal Year 2019 (March 2018 - April 2019). Ubisoft defines PRI as in-game purchases such as microtransactions, as well as expansions and add-ons for its online games such as For Honor, The Division, and Ghost Recon: Wildlands. As Ubisoft projects strong total sales revenues of $2.33 billion (2.1 billion euros) for FY2019, it expects to make a quarter of that from PRI, or $584.1 million.

Qualcomm partners with Google for Snapdragon 835 VR HMD
Google has just announced its new Daydream standalone VR headset, something that it collaborated with Qualcomm on, using their impressive Snapdragon 835 VR platform.
This is a big move, as we have a fully tethered VR experience for the highest-end gaming PCs right now, and while the VR experience with the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are awesome, they're restrictive. Doing away with cables with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 processor means that we can have high-res, smooth VR experiences - anywhere.
Sitting on a plane? No worries.

Qualcomm slaps Apple by suing iPhone manufacturers
Qualcomm is hitting Apple in a totally new way starting today, with the mobile giant suing four of Apple's Taiwan-based contract manufacturers: Foxconn, Compal, Wistron, and Pegatron.
Forbes reports that Qualcomm is suing these four manufacturers for not paying royalities to Qualcomm for the patents on its smartphone tech, including IP on cellular modems - you know, 3G/4G are a big thing. Don Rosenberg, Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Qualcomm said: "It is unfortunate that we must take this action against these long-time licensees to enforce our agreements, but we cannot allow these manufacturers and Apple to use our valuable intellectual property without paying the fair and reasonable royalties to which they have agreed".
Qualcomm has accused Apple of "strong arming" the contract manufacturers to stop paying the licensing fees they legally owe Qualcomm, which is a breach of the contract between Qualcomm and the manufacturers. Qualcomm adds that Apple has promised to contribute towards any damages that the contract manufacturers are hit with, as a result of them not paying Qualcomm's royalty fees.

First Australian sports company buys eSports team
Not many of you will know who the Adelaide Crows are, but they are one of my local AFL (Australian Football League) teams here in South Australia, and they have just become the first mainstream sports organization in Australia to buy a professional eSports team.
The Crows scooped up Lecacy eSports, which is one of Australia's eight top-tier teams that competes in the Oceanic Pro League playing League of Legends. The Adelaide Crows are based in Adelaide, South Australia while their new eSports team are based out of Sydney, New South Wales.Legacy will retain its identity and branding for now, without any details on whether the League gamers will have the Adelaide Crows' signature branding and colors.
COO of Adelaide Crows, Nigel Smart, was reportedly enthusiastic about becoming the first AFL club with an eSports team, and as a local Adelaide resident who lived and breathed games when I grew up and now work in the technology industry surrounded by games - I must tip my hat to him. Adelaide hits the international eSports scene in a big way with a large AFL team buying an eSports team. Awesome.

'Power Rangers' reboot all but dead after China failure
While the newly rebooted 'Power Rangers' film was optimistically hoped to launch a new franchise, perhaps even a cinematic universe, but it now looks like a complete lack of interest all around the world has done what Rita Repulsa never could - actually kill the Rangers.
According to Slash Film, the $100 million film has barely been able to recoup its production budget at the worldwide box office, let alone the hefty marketing campaign which came with it. Despite a tepid response from western audiences, including $84 million from the United States , the production had hoped that a stellar taken in China and Japan would prove its saving grace. Unfortunately, the film only managed $3.3 million over its Chinese premier weekend - a far cry from the $50 million haul of 'Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2. With just $138 million in the can, 'Power Rangers 2' looks to be fading dream. Or nightmare.

AMD teases Navi on 7nm, next-gen GPU on 7nm in 2020
AMD has unleashed a bunch of new products today at their Financial Analyst Day, with a tease of ThreadRipper with 16C/32T, their new Naples platform and the Epyc CPU with 32C/64T, and the exciting new Radeon Vega Frontier Edition graphics card.
AMD also detailed their GPU roadmap through to 2020, with Vega arriving on 14nm - but a 14nm+ respin that I think we'll see in early 2018. The bigger tease is Navi on 7nm for 2018-2019, and a brief glimpse of 'Next Gen' sometime in 2019-2020.

AMD ThreadRipper: 16C/32T coming at Computex in June
AMD is really kicking Intel in the shins with its Ryzen CPU family, teasing that it's next-gen ThreadRipper processor will be launching in Summer 2017 - and will be officially detailed at Computex.
ThreadRipper will feature up to 16C/32T of CPU performance, with AMD "targeting the world's fastest ultra-premium desktop systems in an all-new HEDT platform".
I reached out to Founder & Principal Analyst of Moor Insights & Strategy, Patrick Moorhead, where he told us: "AMD's Threadripper willl be unique in the market and could easily garner over $1,000. I don't expect Intel to follow tit for tat, thread to thread, but rather on other merits like single core performance".

AMD Radeon Vega Frontier 'Watercooled' Edition announced
AMD just announced its new Radeon Vega Frontier Edition graphics card, with 4096 stream processors, 16GB of HBM2 and 480GB/sec of memory bandwidth with an estimated 12.5 TFLOPs of single precision compute performance - enough to beat the new NVIDIA TITAN Xp graphics card and its 12 TFLOPs.
AMD also announced a watercooled version of its professional Radeon Vega Frontier Edition, and its goooooold in color, too. AMD requires 8+8-pin PCIe power connectors, but other than that, we have no idea what to expect in terms of performance/clock differences between the air-cooled and watercooled Radeon Vega Frontier Edition graphics cards. More to come as it happens.

New Thief not in development, says Eidos Montreal
Eidos Montreal confirms our skeptical predictions: a new Thief game isn't in development.
Just days ago Straight Up Films, the production company who's making a feature film adaptation of the Thief franchise, said that Eidos Montreal is currently developing Thief game to release alongside the movie. Now Eidos Montreal boss David Anfossi confirms the game isn't happening.
"Apparently we're developing Thief 5 game! So now we have a title... We just have to build a team,a budget... Forget it!" Anfossi said on Twitter, poking fun at the production company.

Square Enix to dramatically accelerate mobile games
Square Enix plans to accelerate its Mobile / PC Browser gaming segment to counterbalance low full-game sales, and we should see more mobile titles this year than ever before.
In our latest Square Enix financials report we dissected the company's latest Fiscal Year 2017 earnings, and also highlighted where the publisher will go in 2018 and beyond.
While most gamers are itching for news on Final Fantasy VII: Remake and Kingdom Hearts III, this year will be a low-point for big-name Square Enix games, especially after the flurry of AAA releases in FY2017 (Final Fantasy XV, Nier: Automata, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided). Instead of belting out new juggernauts, I predict Square Enix will use the strength of its mobile IPs to buoy revenue streams and carry momentum into the next fiscal year, who's pipeline likely includes the aforementioned anticipated RPGs.
