Fortnite's mysterious rocket launches, tears the atmosphere

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jul 1, 2018 10:38 PM CDT

The world of Fortnite is an ever-changing one, with Epic Games trolling players with a rocket that has sat on the map and a countdown clock that has finally reached zero. Sirens went off, and a launch happened...

Fortnite's mysterious rocket launches, tears the atmosphere

Once the rocket reached its peak, something broke away from the rocket and crashed into the Earth. Early reports of this stated it was a smaller ship that flew across the sky and around the area, blasting through the sky and then leaving a "tear" in the atmosphere. Other people reported seeing two ships, but we have no idea for sure.

Epic knows how to throw an in-game event in Fortnite, with a world that is constantly under the scrutiny of its fans. Fortnite is awesome, and I'm sure the fun is only just beginning.

Todd Howard: Fallout 5 will be focused on single player

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jul 1, 2018 9:30 PM CDT

We know a heap about Fallout 76 and its multiplayer goodness that it'll deliver, but what about a new single-player focused Fallout?

Todd Howard: Fallout 5 will be focused on single player

That's something Bethesda Game Studios executive producer Todd Howard discussed after securing the Industry Legend award at this year's Gamelab. German website GameStar interviewed Howard, who talked about the issues with crossplay in Fallout 76, but also talked about the potential of Fallout 5.

Howard talked about the possibility of multiplayer being injected into future Bethesda franchises, where he said: "For those games, we want to keep them as single player. That is what our focus is going to be. If they have some social aspect we haven't designed yet, you'll see. But we treat each of them each as their own thing".

AMD rumors: Vega 20 on 7nm w/16GB HBM2 for gamers in Q1 2019

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Jul 1, 2018 8:35 PM CDT

It's the best way to start the week: new rumors on AMD's latest graphics technology hitting our gaming PCs... but when will it happen? What will they be? WCCFTech is back at it again, with some serious click bait-y rumors on 'Polaris 30' and Vega 20 on 7nm for gamers.

AMD rumors: Vega 20 on 7nm w/16GB HBM2 for gamers in Q1 2019

The site is sourcing a post on Chiphell that states Polaris 30 will arrive later this year, yet another rebadged and refreshed Polaris after Polaris 10 and Polaris 20. Polaris 30 would arrive in Q4 2018 before the big push into Navi next year which will be a mid-range part that should include GDDR6 technology.

The more interesting part here is not Polaris 30 (which according to my sources will not be happening) as my source has said "AMD will have nothing new for close to a year", but it is Vega 20 on 7nm for gamers. AMD has already teased Vega 20 on 7nm at Computex 2018 as part of an upcoming refresh of Radeon Instinct, but what about gamers? We want a new high-end GPU as well, right?!

ADATA's new SR2000CP SSD: reads 6GB/sec, writes at 3.8GB/sec

Anthony Garreffa | Storage | Jul 1, 2018 6:34 PM CDT

ADATA has just revealed its latest SR2000CP, a new enterprise SSD that has storage speeds that will blow your mind, and it's all coming out of a PCIe 3.0 x8 slot.

ADATA's new SR2000CP SSD: reads 6GB/sec, writes at 3.8GB/sec

The new ADATA SR2000CP is available in 2TB, 3.5TB, 4TB, 8TB, and even 11TB capacities that all feature 3D "eTLC" NAND flash that has 3 bits per cell, with endurance cycles that are similar to MLC NAND flash. But it's the read and write speeds of the new ADATA SR2000CP that'll blow your mind.

ADATA has tested the 4TB version of the new SR2000CP which had sequential read speeds of up to 6GB/sec and writes of 3.8GB/sec. The company is also providing enterprise-friendly features like user-configurable over-provisioning, power loss protection that keeps your data safe, native 256-bit AES encryption, and 55C ambient temperature operation that is perfect for the specs Google define for their datacenters.

AMD's new Vega 20 will support PCIe 4.0 tech

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Jul 1, 2018 12:17 AM CDT

We knew that from the last lot of leaks from an internal AMD slide last year that the company was planning PCIe 4.0 support for its upcoming Vega 20 GPU, and now we have some more support for these claims.

AMD's new Vega 20 will support PCIe 4.0 tech

AMD engineers are hard at work on Linux drivers for its fresh new Vega 20, which is being made on the smaller 7nm node. The new PCIe 4.0 standard will usher in some huge bandwidth increases, as PCIe 3.0 has been with us for close to a decade now and feels stale with its 8.0GT/s of raw bit rate and 8Gbps of link bandwidth, where PCIe 4.0 doubles those numbers to 16GT/s and 16Gbps of bandwidth.

The previous rumor pegged Vega 20 for the second half of 2018, made on the 7nm node with 4-stack HBM2 giving us 1TB/sec with 16GB or 32GB HBM to choose from, PCIe 4.0 x16 support and between 150-300W of power. Now we can expect PCIe 4.0 motherboards around the corner, perfect timing for AMD to push into the datacenter.

Halo TV show ordered by Showtime, coming in early 2019

The Halo series has secured a big venue for its television debut.

Halo TV show ordered by Showtime, coming in early 2019

As a big Halo fan I was both elated and concerned when Microsoft announced the Halo TV series 5 years ago. So many possibilities ran through my mind--the franchise is rich with interesting paths--but with 343 Industries at the helm things could be very different. And recent news of the Halo TV series finally grabbing a network brings back those old feelings.

Microsoft recently announced that its live-action Halo television adaptation will get a 10-episode run on Showtime. The series, which is due out by "early 2019," will have one-hour episodes and should follow the Human-Covenant war but no details on an exact timeframe have been announced. Thankfully the show isn't going to be another smaller-scale project like Forward Unto Dawn or the awful Nightfall, but a fully-fledged series backed by CBS.

Cyberpunk 2077 is still heavy in development

Although Cyberpunk 2077 got an official trailer and a closed-doors demo, the game is far from finished.

Cyberpunk 2077 is still heavy in development

It turns out that CD Projekt RED has a very good reason for not showing off that famed Cyberpunk 2077 behind-the-curtain gameplay demo: the build is actually pre-alpha. According to company president Adam Kicinski, this is just a taster sampling of what CDPR has in store and doesn't represent the final game.

In a recent interview Polish website Bankier asked if the closed-doors gameplay was an alpha build, in which Kicinski replied: "No, earlier. Therefore, we show the game behind closed doors - this is not the final quality yet. This is the most polished part of the game we have now, prepared in some sense to show it to people outside the company."

PUBG Corp kills Fortnite lawsuit

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jun 27, 2018 6:09 PM CDT

The PUBG vs Fortnite lawsuit saga has ended (for now?).

PUBG Corp kills Fortnite lawsuit

PUBG Corp, the company made specifically to wrangle the smash-hit battle royale game PUBG, has terminated its lawsuit against Epic Games, Bloomberg reports. A month ago Bluehole's subsidiary filed a lawsuit in South Korean courts alleging that Epic's Fortnite game infringed on various copyrights, including UI and other in-game features. The suit has now been withdrawn in South Korean courts.

Although PUBG has sold over 44 million copies on console and PC, Fortnite has enjoyed a massive surge in success in recent months thanks to its free-to-play accessibility on all platforms and strong engagement strategies. PUBG Corp originally took issues with Fortnite back in January by commenting on its similarities, which drew the ire of the gaming community who saw it as a sign of jealousy.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990X: 32C/64T for rumored $1750 USD

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Jun 27, 2018 9:00 AM CDT

If there's a CPU that I'm excited for this year, it would have to be AMD's impending megatasking crusher, the Ryzen Threadripper 2990X and its monstrous 32C/64T of CPU power.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990X: 32C/64T for rumored $1750 USD

But what about the price? AMD seemed very coy during Computex 2018 in public and behind closed doors about the price of the new Ryzen Threadripper 2990X, but weren't shy from saying it would be more expensive than the current Ryzen Threadripper 1950X. Now there's a European retailer that has listed it early for 1509 EUR, which works out to around $1750 USD.

This is most likely a placeholder price, and I expect it to be more expensive than that - closer to, or over $2000. Hell, AMD could charge $3000 for the Ryzen Threadripper 2990X and it would still be an amazing price. Intel doesn't have anything close to it apart from the Xeon Platinum 8180 Processor which is a 28C/56T part that costs over $10,000.

Intel Core i9-9900K teased, new 8C/16T CPU with Z390 chipset

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Jun 27, 2018 8:41 AM CDT

Intel's unreleased and still not named 8C/16T processor is ri ghit around the corner, a new CPU that will be unleashed next to the Z390 chipset and now we might have the new name: the Core i9-9900K. Yeah, Core i9.

Intel Core i9-9900K teased, new 8C/16T CPU with Z390 chipset

The latest rumor is directly from the salt shaker itself, with WCCFTech saying it will be the Core i9-9900K with 8C/16T. Intel will also reportedly launch the Core i7-9700K as a new 6C/12T processor, and the Core i5-9600K as a 6C/6T processor with HT obviously disabled.

I find lumping the new 8C/16T chip into the Core i9 family as extreme, and it will surely cause some marketing issues, but on the other hand this is a new sector of the market for Intel to enter. Intel doesn't have an 8C/16T processor in the desktop CPU market, a slice of the market that AMD has absolutely dominated in since the release of the Ryzen 7 1800X over a year ago now.

Epic Games sues former Fortnite tester over breaking NDA

Thomas Hannah, a former Fortnite tester has been accused of leaking information of the in-game Fortnite event for the fourth season. He says that the information that was shared was throughout a private conversation without knowledge of the other persons motives, here is what he had to say "[I was] pumped with a series of questions and guesses regarding where the meteor would hit."
