Qantas breaks flight length record with non-stop 19-hour flight

Jak Connor | Electric Vehicles & Cars | Oct 21, 2019 1:02 AM CDT

Qantas has taken to their newsroom section on their website to announce that they have broken the record for the longest non-stop commercial flight.

Qantas breaks flight length record with non-stop 19-hour flight

The press release says that the flight airline took off from New York and was heading to Sydney over the course 19 hours and 16 minutes. The flight successfully touched down in Sydney and according to Qantas it was a test to monitor pilots brain waves and melatonin levels. Medical researchers and scientists that partnered with Qantas for the experiment said that cabin lighting and in-flight meals were also adjusted in ways to help reduce jetlag on passengers.

According to Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce, "This is a really significant first for aviation. Hopefully, it's a preview of a regular service that will speed up how people travel from one side of the globe to the other. We know ultra long haul flights pose some extra challenges but that's been true every time technology has allowed us to fly further. The research we're doing should give us better strategies for improving comfort and wellbeing along the way."

Dentist plonks down $1 million for 40 factory-sealed retro games

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Oct 20, 2019 11:11 PM CDT

Eric Naierman has just plonked down a cool $1.02 million on some sticker-sealed classic games, with it being one of the largest single-transaction sales in gaming history.

Dentist plonks down $1 million for 40 factory-sealed retro games

Eric Naierman is a dentist out of South Florida where he flew over to Denver in September to add to his gaming collection. He secured over three dozen of the most-wanted vintage games in the world, spending $1.02 million on it -- this sale is now one of the largest in gaming history.

All of the games that Naierman secured are "black box" and "sticker-sealed" games, meaning they're in absolute perfect condition. Naierman and a small group of partners called the Video Game Club secured a bunch of games for the original NES including sticker-sealed copies of Mario Bros. arcade edition, the two known copies of Gold, and the only copy of Balloon Flight and Gumshoe.

So, researchers made artificial HUMAN SKIN that covers a smartphone

Anthony Garreffa | Science, Space, & Robotics | Oct 20, 2019 10:29 PM CDT

In some news that should be categorized as "why the hell did they do this", researchers from Telecom Paris have made an artificial skin that has some truly unique properties. Check out this video:

So, researchers made artificial HUMAN SKIN that covers a smartphone

The new artificial human skin is interesting, as it reacts to stroking, pinching, tapping, and even tickling... with the researchers covering a smartphone with it and using it on the back of the device. They also used it on a smartwatch, and I'm sure it'll have a million-and-one use cases, but for now I'm just scratching my head.

Skin-On Interfaces are "sensitive skin-like input methods than can be added to existing devices to increase their capabilities" which is explained on this website. This project saw the researchers wanting to make the "perfect human interface that is the skin for existing devices". The researchers took inspiration from human skin in order to design the "perfect artificial skin".

GTA addict will drive NON STOP in GTA 5 until GTA 6 is released

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Oct 20, 2019 9:11 PM CDT

If you thought you were a fan of Grand Theft Auto... think again, because you're not as dedicated as this one gamer who has said they'll drive around GTA 5 until GTA 6 is released.

GTA addict will drive NON STOP in GTA 5 until GTA 6 is released

Rockstar Games confirmed Grand Theft Auto 6 back in 2015 saying they had "some ideas" on where it was going to take the franchise next, and while 4 years have passed since then, no new details on GTA 6 have surfaced. One gamer is now dedicating a lot of time into driving around the map of GTA 5 until GTA 6 is released.

YouTuber 10HoursMovies has already smashed through around 885 laps in GTA 5 so far... but what if Rockstar doesn't release GTA 6 until after the next-gen Xbox Scarlett and PlayStation 5 consoles are released? We're looking at December 2020 for the PS5, so Rockstar could wait until 2021 for Grand Theft Auto 6... that's a lot of driving in GTA 5 between now and then.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 details: 100MP camera and 5G support

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Oct 20, 2019 8:32 PM CDT

Qualcomm doesn't sleep, as it is on a mission to power virtually every single product you touch -- and rightfully so, they kick ass at it. What's next for the San Diego-based giant? The next-gen Snapdragon 865, that's what.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 details: 100MP camera and 5G support

The next-gen Snapdragon 865 chip will be making its way into 8848's new Titanium M6 5G smartphone (8848 is a luxury smartphone and watchmaker in China). They've already outed Qualcomm's unannounced Snapdragon 865 SoC, which will reportedly arrive in two different varieties: one with 4G LTE and another with much faster 5G connectivity.

8848's interesting new Titanium M6 5G smartphone rolls out with a 6.01-inch AMOLED display, a huge 12GB of RAM and equally-as-large 1TB of on-board storage. Camera wise, 8848 is throwing in a 64-megapixel camera that will snap 100-megapixel photos thanks to advanced interpolation.

AORUS TRX40 mobo teased, should support 64C/128T next-gen Threadripper

Anthony Garreffa | Motherboards | Oct 20, 2019 8:04 PM CDT

AMD is still in the kitchen cooking up its next-gen Ryzen Threadripper CPUs based on the exciting and kick-ass Zen 2 architecture, but what about motherboards to support them? We know about the new sockets in TRX40/TRX80/WRX80 that will support 24C/32C/48C/64C next-gen chips from AMD.

AORUS TRX40 mobo teased, should support 64C/128T next-gen Threadripper

VideoCardz has the scoop here of a next-gen AORUS TRX40 motherboard on the E-ATX standard (i.e. it's chunky AF) and packs 4 x PCIe 4.0 x16 ports, and 8 x DDR4 DIMM slots for quad-channel memory goodness. There's a chipset fan to keep it cool, and a debug LED that can be spotted from this single, mysterious image.

You can see there is a bunch of fin arrays near the CPU socket, which would point to the third-gen Ryzen Threadripper CPUs chewing through copious amounts of power. Given that the new Zen 2-based Ryzen Threadripper CPUs will have up to 64C/128T and up to 280W TDPs, this is no surprise.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild is fully playable in VR on the PC

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Oct 20, 2019 7:39 PM CDT

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the best games I've ever played in my 30+ years as a gamer, even with its questionable performance on the Nintendo Switch. But on the PC? In 60FPS? And now in VR? OMG.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild is fully playable in VR on the PC

Yeah, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now fully playable in the world of virtual reality on the PC and it seems to be quite the experience. BSoD Gaming has an extensive video with someone playing through Breath of the Wild in VR and seriously, it makes me want to play through it again in VR.

The team used an Intel Core i7-8700K, 16GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti to pull it off -- with far more than 60FPS average in Breath of the Wild in VR goodness. There will be fixes made along the way, but for now the experience is all that you want -- the world that Nintendo built in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was already mind-blowingly gorgeous, and that is only amplified in VR by the looks of things.

Jedi Fallen Order has high FPS mode on PS4 Pro, Xbox One X

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 20, 2019 4:53 PM CDT

Jedi: Fallen Order is optimized to push the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X to their limits.

Jedi Fallen Order has high FPS mode on PS4 Pro, Xbox One X

Respawn's new singleplayer-only Star Wars game will have to separate modes on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X: a mode that prioritizes resolution with upscaled 4K visuals at 30FPS, and a performance mode that hits 1080p 60FPS.

This is basically par for the course for current-gen games, and it's also likely Jedi: Fallen Order will hit close or even full native 3840x2160p on the Xbox One X. The PlayStation 4 Pro on the other hand will be upscaled 4K (likely from 1400p or thereabouts) due to its comparatively weaker hardware. Hopefully the game won't make the PS4 Pro sound like a jet about to take off.

Leaked PS5 devkit photo stylized in 3D renders

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 20, 2019 12:40 PM CDT

A bit ago a leaked photo showed off the PlayStation 5 devkit's design, confirming the original V-shaped patent sketch was authentic. Now some digital renders capture the that design in 3D form.

Leaked PS5 devkit photo stylized in 3D renders

The renders come from LetsGoDigital and are stylized digital recreations of the actual physical PS5 development kit, complete with the manta ray color scheme, front-facing buttons and USB ports, and distinct ventilation.

The design is still pretty striking, but we shouldn't expect the final PlayStation 5 to look like this. Final consumer-facing products are almost always different than their respective devkits, except of course for the Xbox One X.

Rumor: Diablo II remastered on the way, reveal set for Blizzcon 2019

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 20, 2019 3:14 AM CDT

Just as we advised, Blizzard is apparently going big at Blizzcon 2019, and Diablo will be a huge part of the show.

Rumor: Diablo II remastered on the way, reveal set for Blizzcon 2019

Blizzard plans to reveal two big Diablo games at Blizzcon 2019: A remastered version of the beloved Diablo II, possibly including the Lord of Destruction expansion with its runewords and extra Assassin and Druid classes, and the next mainline game in the series, Diablo IV.

The news comes from Overwatch streamer Metro, who attributes the info to inside sources at Blizzard. Metro's leaks were validated when they accurately predicted Ashe's reveal in Overwatch before Blizzcon 2018 aired, so the source appears to be genuine.

Xbox Game Pass continues boosting full game sales

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 19, 2019 11:02 PM CDT

Gamers frequently buy outside the Xbox Game Pass lineup, making it hugely instrumental for Microsoft.

Xbox Game Pass continues boosting full game sales

Microsoft's $10 a month all-you-can-play Xbox Game Pass service is one of the most powerful forces in the industry. Not only does it make money from recurring subs every month, but it's actually leading to full game sales on Xbox LIVE. This phenomena was first highlighted by Phil Spencer, who confirmed Game Pass is sparking actual game purchases back in 2018.

Much to Microsoft's delight, Game Pass continues delivering. It's a kind of gateway to specific games that players wouldn't have tried otherwise, and when it turns out the games are good, players actually buy them outright to own them. Speaking at the GamesIndustry.biz Investment Summit, Xbox indie lead Agostino Simonetta said this trend of Game Pass inadvertently leading to game sales is continuing.

Xiaomi unveils 34-inch UltraWide gaming monitor

Anthony Garreffa | Displays | Oct 19, 2019 8:48 PM CDT

Xiaomi has just stepped into the gaming monitor market with its new Mi Surface Display, a new 34-inch UltraWide gaming monitor with native 3440x1440 resolution and 144Hz refresh rate.

Xiaomi unveils 34-inch UltraWide gaming monitor

The Chinese giant has unveiled not just one but two new Mi Surface Displays with the 34-inch model joined by a 24-inch 1080p model. The larger 21:9 UltraWide monitor has a 1500R curvature, with its 144Hz refresh rate smoothed out even more with AMD FreeSync and 4ms (GtG) response time.

Xiaomi is using super-thin bezels on its 34-inch UltraWide gaming display, with around 2mm bezels used and a stand that is has height adjustment and tilt abilities. We should hopefully find both DisplayPort and HDMI connectivity, but Xiaomi is a little skinny on the details in that department, at least for now.

Blue12 studios game developer Koola just released an amazing UE4 demo that looks like something right out of next-gen. The footage was captured in real-time and shows intense hurricane-force winds, with quite realistic effects like shaking trees, destructive debris, lightning and ambient lighting effects, and tons of collisions and particle physics going on.

Interestingly enough, this demo was captured on an older NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 GPU, not an insanely powerful rig. It's actually not even optimized, so the demo could look even better with more horsepower and higher-end tweaks.

The Outer Worlds PS4 Pro enhancements confirmed with 4K upscaling

Private Division confirms The Outer Worlds will tap the PS4 Pro's extra horsepower with graphical optimizations. Obsidian's new spacefaring RPG will support upscaled 4K resolution on the PS4 Pro, and hits native 4K with 3840 x 2160 textures on Xbox One and PC. The Outer Worlds will instead hit a native 1400p on PS4 Pro. It was previously reported the game would only be optimized on Xbox One X.

"The Outer Worlds is enhanced for both Xbox One X and PS4 Pro. It includes 4K textures and resolution on Xbox One X and PC, and upsamples to 4K from 1440p on PS4 Pro. It looks great across all platforms," the publishing label said on Twitter.

AMD's Ryzen 9 3950X destroys Intel's i9-10980XE in 3DMark Firestrike

Shannon Robb | Processors | Oct 19, 2019 2:08 PM CDT

The news on the upcoming launches of AMD's new 3950X and Threadripper parts are heating up. This time with official results for Intel's new Cascade Lake-X parts having an official showing as well. The findings come from the 3DMark database, which has new results for both the flagship AMD mainstream CPU and the upcoming flagship Intel HEDT part as well.

AMD's Ryzen 9 3950X destroys Intel's i9-10980XE in 3DMark Firestrike

Different users ran the two tests, but they appear to be stock results from what the results entries show. Now do keep in mind this is less of a controlled environment than the reviews you read here. Each of these was from separate users with no in-depth information such as MCE status or anything else that may be configured. However, once we look at the scores and some of the specifics of each entry, we can extrapolate some useful information.

First up is the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X result which we see here was run on a X570 GIGABYTE Aorus Elite. The physics score, which for those unaware is your CPU test for Firestrike tests, shows a score of 32082. The maximum turbo clock shows just over 3,700MHz and the stock clock of 3,500MHz. The AMD rig was outfitted with 16GB of Kingston DDR4 at 3,200MHz and 16 cores with 32 threads active.

AMD Ryzen 9 3950X performance leaked showing 9980XE level performance

Shannon Robb | Processors | Oct 19, 2019 1:33 PM CDT

The team over at WCCFTech has "a friend" who somehow got hands-on with the upcoming AMD Ryzen 9 3950X 16 core mainstream platform CPU. They then tested the CPU in the popular Cinebench R20 benchmark. While Cinebench may not be the end-all tell-all for performance, it does give us a decent look at the relative performance in a heavy render style load.

AMD Ryzen 9 3950X performance leaked showing 9980XE level performance

It is important to note that this at this time must be treated as a rumor. But, it is worth noting that if you scale the relative performance, we have seen thus far from the new Ryzen 3rd gen parts, the numbers stack up to be credible.

The Ryzen 9 3950X is stated to have an R20 multi-core score of 8788 and breaks down to a per-core score of 549. while the current Intel flagship 9980XE came in at 8833 which breaks down to a per-core score of 490. As you can see, the 18-core flagship from Intel, when testing multi-core, is only less than half of a percent higher of a score. This is while having two more cores and four more threads. This breaks down to a per-core breakdown of a little over 11% per fore performance advantage for the 3950X.

The first real photo of a PlayStation 5 dev kit appears

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Oct 19, 2019 2:58 AM CDT

We're finally here -- the first real photo of Sony's next-gen PlayStation 5 development kit. Our good friends at LetsGoDigital have been all over the 3D renders of the PS5, but now this is the real deal.

The first real photo of a PlayStation 5 dev kit appears

The first real image of the PS5 development kit shows that the renders I have been reporting on have been indeed real, showing that awesome V-shaped design that doesn't just look good, but it should also be much better for keeping the high-end internals cool.

You can see this is "Prototype 1" and is "Not For Sale" (can you imagine how much this thing would go for on eBay?) and it has the On/Standby, Reset, Eject, System Init, and Network Init buttons on the front. Don't expect the System Init and Network Init buttons on your PS5 when it launches in December 2020, however.
