Resident Evil franchise passes 100 million sales milestone

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jun 12, 2020 9:06 PM CDT

Capcom has just announced that the Resident Evil franchise is its first to sell over 100 million copies worldwide, with the original Resident Evil launching on the original PlayStation all the way back in 1996.

Resident Evil franchise passes 100 million sales milestone

Interestingly, over 80% of the sales of Resident Evil games have been outside of Japan. This means over 80 million copies were sold overseas, and less than 20 million inside of Japan.

Thanks to the flex Capcom did with Resident Evil 7 and pushing it back in to its survival horror origins, but this time with a first-person perspective -- sprinkled with the awesome Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes, and the franchise has never been stronger. Now that Resident Evil has topped 100 million sales globally, we're headed into Resident Evil 8: Village.

PlayStation 5 launch price might be $699, launches December 2020

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jun 12, 2020 8:19 PM CDT

Sony might have unveiled a few small details about its next-gen PlayStation 5 console, but the most important thing is still a mystery: the price. One particular retailer is teasing a $699 launch price for the PlayStation 5.

PlayStation 5 launch price might be $699, launches December 2020

A new listing on Play-Asia has been uploaded, listing Sony's new PlayStation 5 console for $699 -- this is $100 more than the PS3 launch price even with its smaller 60GB HDD at the time.

Personally, $699 isn't much for something that will offer 8K video support, 4K 60FPS and 4K 120FPS gaming, and capable of driving the next-gen exclusives that will be powered by the custom AMD chips inside of the PlayStation 5. $599 at the time for the PS3 was too rich for most gamers, as there weren't enough games at launch to jump into a new expensive console over the PlayStation 2 at the time.

Demon's Souls PS5 remake supports ray tracing, has a FPS priority mode

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jun 12, 2020 6:20 PM CDT

Demon's Souls on the PlayStation 5 will include nifty enhancements like a big graphical upgrade, ray traced visuals, and a new frame rate priority mode.

Demon's Souls PS5 remake supports ray tracing, has a FPS priority mode

The new Demon's Souls remake on PS5 will take cues from NiOh by offering two different performance modes: One that maximizes resolution, and another that delivers smooth FPS. Gamers will be able to adjust the setting on-the-fly, and we don't know exact resolution or frame rate targets, but we could see some dazzling new perf like native 4K 60FPS and maybe even 1080p 120FPS or 1440p 60FPS.

Sony also confirms Demon's Souls will use the PlayStation 5's hardware-based ray-tracing effects made possible by the Zen 2 CPU and Navi RDNA 2 GPU. There's mention of next-gen lighting effects thrown in too, complete the amazing global illumination, shadows, and incredible atmospheric effects shown in the trailer.

KFConsole hits 4K 120FPS and cooks your chicken at the same time

Today KFC announced its own surprising jump into the console market. Introducing the KFConsole, an innovative new system that satisfies both your hunger for high-end enthusiast gaming and your actual hunger.

The real secret sauce to the KFConsole is its patented Chicken Bucket Chamber technology, which keeps your tasty drumsticks warm as you game. Instead of simply whisking away all the heat with a powerful cooling solution, the KFC Console makes good use of the 7nm SoC's toasty thermals to actually cook your food. The Chicken Bucket Chamber also acts as a combo space heater for those cold wintry nights.

New Spider-Man PS5 game is standalone, not an expansion or sequel

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jun 12, 2020 4:31 PM CDT

Insomniac Games officially confirms the new Spider-Man Miles Morales game on PS5 isn't a sequel, but it's not a re-release either. It will be it's own standalone game, similar to Uncharted: Lost Legacy.

New Spider-Man PS5 game is standalone, not an expansion or sequel

Yesterday's new Spider-Man PS5 announcement confused a lot of people. Was it a sequel? Is it coming to PS4? Sony's misleading words in a Telegraph interview didn't help. "I guess you could call it an expansion and an enhancement to the previous game," SIE Europe exec Simon Rutter said in the interview.

This led everyone to believe the new PS5 Spider-Man would include the base game enhanced on PS5, and Miles Morales' story would be a side expansion. That's not the case. Spider-Man Miles Morales is just a smaller-scale standalone experience that'll leverage the PlayStation 5's higher-end power.

AT&T could sell Warner Bros. Games to EA or Activision for $4 billion

AT&T wants to sell its WB Games division in a massive deal that could be worth $4 billion, sources tell CNBC.

AT&T could sell Warner Bros. Games to EA or Activision for $4 billion

AT&T's management may no longer be wiling to fund huge multi-million dollar games projects, and is trying to find a buyer for its massive Warner Bros. Games division. It's not that WB Games aren't profitable--Mortal Kombat 11 was the best-selling game in April 2019 in the US, and has been on the top 10 list. The WB Games sell off may happen due to a divestiture (when a company sells a subsidiary). A bit ago, Elliott Management laid a huge $2.3 billion stake in AT&T and called for the company to sell off non-vital assets like DirectTV. WB Games may also be seen as a non-vital asset.

Some gaming's biggest publishers want to buy WB Games. Activision-Blizzard, Take-Two Interactive, and EA are all interested in grabbing the division, and for good reason: WB Games has ownership of some of the biggest IPs in the industry. WB Games owns Batman (and all DC games for that matter), Harry Potter, including the lucrative Wizard's Unite mobile game, and of course Mortal Kombat, a titanic franchise that's stood the test of time.

EA today stealth dropped all of its modern Battlefield games on Steam, as well as Mass Effect and both Battlefront games.

EA is doubling down on catalog game sales, and they really want to maximize earnings on old games. Valve in return wants Apex Legends, so expect that to show up on Steam eventually as well. But for now we have some of the best shooters dropping on Steam, including four different Battlefield games, Battlefronts I & II, and a Mass Effect duo that allows Steam gamers to own the full ME series.

All of these games are on sale, too. Prices have been slashed in half because the real money is in monetization. All of these games have online-based microtransaction hooks and push live services.

The Microsoft Store just leaked the next Star Wars game, and it looks like a spiritual successor to the Rogue Squadron series.

According to the leak, the new game is called Star Wars: Squardons, and is likely closely related to the Project Maverick listings we saw a while back. This should be EA Motive's next game. Unlike Rogue Squardon, gamers will be able to play as either the Galactic Empire or the Rebellion in starship battles.

ASUS brags about ROG Maximus XII Apex overclocking records

Shane McGlaun | Motherboards | Jun 12, 2020 10:04 AM CDT

ASUS has announced that overclock or using its latest ROG Maximus XII Apex motherboard have been able to break a number of world records and land multiple first place scores. The first of the benchmark records that ASUS is bragging about involves the overclocking of an Intel Core i9-10900K processor up to 7.7 GHz on all 10 scores.

ASUS brags about ROG Maximus XII Apex overclocking records

ASUS wrote, "Because of the ongoing global situation, ASUS was unable to host its traditional overclocking gathering this year, so instead a smaller session took place at the ASUS headquarters in Taiwan, with local overclockers Jon 'Elmore' Sandstrom and Pieter 'Massman' Plaisier working alongside internal ASUS experts. Using a liquid-helium setup, the group managed to shatter the Intel Core architecture frequency record, the single-core Geekbench 4 record, and took global first-place positions in 10-core categories for Geekbench 3, Cinebench R15, and wPrime 32M."

Another of the records set using the ASUS motherboard also used G.Skill memory to hit a new DDR4-memory-overclocking-frequency record of 6666 MHz. 3DMark records are also broken using a system running the ASUS motherboard, and a number of other benchmark records fell as well. The full list of benchmark records set using ASUS hardware can be seen in the chart below.

PlayStation 5 might be bigger than the Xbox Series X

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jun 12, 2020 9:20 AM CDT

UPDATE: We also found this size comparison that groups together multiple generations of consoles:

PlayStation 5 might be bigger than the Xbox Series X

If the Xbox Series X is a fridge, then the PS5 is a skyscraper.

According to new size approximations from artist EvilBorisHDR, the PS5 is actually a fair bit taller than the Xbox Series X. But the Xbox Series X is definitely more wide. That's saying a lot because the Series X is an absolute unit of a console.

This lander will take NASA's VIPER rover to the Moon to hunt for water

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Jun 12, 2020 3:29 AM CDT

NASA has recently announced the company that will be transporting it's water-hunting VIPER rover to the Moon.

This lander will take NASA's VIPER rover to the Moon to hunt for water

VIPER stands for "Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover", and the purpose of the mission is to see if the Moon has any traces of water, specifically on the Moon's South Pole. VIPER discovering a source of water on the Moon is an extremely important step for the overall success of NASA's Artemis mission, which will take the next American man, and the first American woman to the lunar surface by 2024.

NASA has selected Pittsburgh-based Astrobotic to build the $199.5 million dollar water-hunting rover. Astrobotic CEO John Thornton commented on the landing the contract, saying, "It is an enormous honor and responsibility to be chosen by NASA to deliver this mission of national importance. Astrobotic's lunar logistics services were created to open a new era on the Moon. Delivering VIPER to look for water, and setting the stage for the first human crew since Apollo, embodies our mission as a company."

Black Hole confirmed to have regular 'heartbeat', here's how and why

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Jun 12, 2020 2:37 AM CDT

A black hole that is located 600 million light-years from Earth has been rediscovered to have a regular "heartbeat".

Black Hole confirmed to have regular 'heartbeat', here's how and why

The new findings were discovered by researchers from the National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China, as well as researchers from Durham University, UK. The report was published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, and details a black hole that was first detected to have a "heartbeat" back in 2007. Since then, astronomers haven't been able to pick up a signal from the black hole as our Sun was blocking it out.

Now, researchers used the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton X-ray satellite, and have confirmed that the black hole is still beating like a heart. So why does this black hole beat like a heart? According to Professor Chris Done, in Durham University's Centre for Extragalactic Astronomy, who collaborated on the research, "The main idea for how this heartbeat is formed is that the inner parts of the accretion disc are expanding and contracting." Done also said, "The only other system we know which seems to do the same thing is a 100,000 times smaller stellar-mass black hole in our Milky Way, fed by a binary companion star, with correspondingly smaller luminosities and timescales."

Computex 2020 cancelled because of COVID-19, see you all in 2021

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Jun 12, 2020 2:12 AM CDT

I would only have just gotten home last week from Computex 2020 if it had gone ahead, which was postponed over the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.

Samsung 870 QVO SSD: 8TB of SSD storage will cost you $900

Anthony Garreffa | Storage | Jun 11, 2020 10:19 PM CDT

You might be salivating over our review on Sabrent's new champion Rocket Q NVMe 8TB SSD but if you can't afford $1500 on a new 8TB NVMe-based SSD... then maybe an 8TB 2.5-inch SSD will just have to do.

Samsung 870 QVO SSD: 8TB of SSD storage will cost you $900

Amazon is now listing Samsung's QVO series SSD at up to 8TB, but the listing was quickly removed. There were two different varieties of Samsung's QVO series SSDs up for sale, with a 1TB and 8TB option -- but there will surely be 2TB and 4TB versions of the drive once they are officially on sale.

The pre-order price for the 1TB drive was $130 and is available starting June 30, while the much larger 8TB drive also costs a hell of a lot more at $900 -- and it will be available to purchase and install (literally) every single game you own on August 24.

It actually looks like it would be a great addition to the portable monitor experience, so you can truly have a portable monitor.

Bill and Ted Face the Music trailer is bodacious

Anthony Garreffa | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Jun 11, 2020 8:07 PM CDT

Can you believe it has been almost 30 years since Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure? It's now 2020 and Keanu Reeves has had a gigantic career as the star of The Matrix and John Wick franchises. But now, we have the first trailer to Bill and Ted Face the Music:

Bill and Ted Face the Music trailer is bodacious

This is the third movie in the franchise, which will conclude the journey of Alex Winters and Keanu Reeves as Bill S. Preston, Esq. and Ted "Theodore" Logan. They're stoner BFFs whose band -- Wyld Stallyns -- was meant to save the world. Except, it didn't.

Bill and Ted Face the Music is based a couple of decades down the path of Bill and Ted, where the two haven't written the song -- yet alone used it to save the world. In typical Bill and Ted fashion, the pair use time travel to solve the issue -- they attempt to go into the future, steal the song (from themselves in the future), and come back to save the world.
