US Department of Justice puts 3D printing in its crosshairs over custom machine guns

Jak Connor | Business, Financial & Legal | Sep 12, 2024 7:01 AM CDT

The US Department of Justice is turning its eye to the 3D printing industry that is fueling the creation of devices that convert semi-automatic guns into fully automatic weapons.

US Department of Justice puts 3D printing in its crosshairs over custom machine guns

The announcement came from Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, who issued a request last Friday asking the DOJ, along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), to implement measures to prevent the growing number of machine gun version devices, or MCDs. According to the ATF, the number of MCDs of various designs has increased by more than 500% between 2017 and 2021. Monaco announced that new groups would be formed to track and tackle the issue of MCDs.

The Deputy Attorney has pleaded with the 3D printing community, along with software developers, technology experts, and any other relevant authority in the space, to help identify a solution to this problem, as "you know your industries and this technology better than anyone." The above image showcases an example of what an MCD can look like. These small devices can be the size of a USB drive and can be made out of a single sheet of plastic.

Apple iPhone 16 line-up to come with significant hike in gaming performance

Jak Connor | Gaming | Sep 12, 2024 6:03 AM CDT

Apple is continuing to lean into having more games on its platform with the company announcing a significant performance boost coming to its latest generation of iPhone scheduled to release on September 20.

Apple iPhone 16 line-up to come with significant hike in gaming performance

The Cupertino company only recently wrapped up its Glowtime event where it announced the new iPhone 16 models, along with its next-generation Apple Watch, and AirPods. While Apple Intelligence and camera capabilities are certainly a focus for the iPhone 16s, Apple also pointed out during its presentation that all iPhone 16s will come with 30% higher sustained performance compared to the iPhone 15s. Paired with that announcement was a list of new AAA games headed over to Apple's platform.

Apple attributes these performance hikes to the new logic board layout and the new A18 chip that has paved the way for improvements to the GPU, thermal regulations, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and overall better performance. Apple specifically pointed out War Thunder Mobile as an example of a title taking advantage of hardware-acelerated ray-tracing. This feature enabled developers to "more accurately represent the reflection of the Sun on the water," thus improving overall graphics.

Microsoft terminates another 650 staff from its Xbox business, after Sony announces PS5 Pro

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 12, 2024 6:01 AM CDT

It has barely been over 24 hours since Sony announced its beefed-up Xbox-killing PlayStation 5 Pro console, and now news has leaked that Microsoft is firing another 650 staff from its Xbox gaming division.

Microsoft terminates another 650 staff from its Xbox business, after Sony announces PS5 Pro

In an email memo sent by Xbox boss Phil Spencer and "obtained" by IGN, Spencer explained: "For the past year, our goal has been to minimize disruption while welcoming new teams and enabling them to do their best work. As part of aligning our post-acquisition team structure and managing our business, we have made the decision to eliminate approximately 650 roles across Microsoft Gaming - mostly corporate and supporting functions - to organize our business for long term success".

The cull isn't as drastic as the 1900+ workers that Xbox laid off across Activision, Bethesda, and Xbox Games Studios earlier this year, but it's another 650+ people from a division that can't compete with the PS5 Pro, and in the months leading into the holiday season.

Sony officially unveils the PlayStation 5 Pro and how it dropped the ball

Jak Connor | Gaming | Sep 12, 2024 5:32 AM CDT

Sony has pulled the curtain off the highly anticipated PlayStation 5 Pro, and the announcement has been somewhat of a mixed bag for Sony, with many fans criticizing the company for making concessions in places it shouldn't have, along with a price hike of $200 compared to the standard PlayStation 5.

Sony officially unveils the PlayStation 5 Pro and how it dropped the ball

Now that the dust has settled from the announcement, I wanted to give my overall impressions and where I believe Sony dropped the ball, ultimately leading to the public opinion of the PS5 Pro being controversial, as anecdotally represented by the Like to Dislike ratio on the announcement video (94,000 Likes vs 176,000 Dislikes at the time of writing). Firstly, all of the leaked specifications for the PS5 Pro were pretty much on the money, which meant that anyone who caught that news wouldn't have been surprised by any of the performance improvements.

Keeping to performance improvements, I believe this is where Sony totally missed the mark. The presentation showcased the PS5 Pro's impressive performance capabilities, which include an approximate boost of 45% compared to the PS5 and 2-3x faster RayTracing performance. However, Sony decided to showcase this performance jump on games that the majority of originally launched on the PS4. Even with the PS5 titles showcasing this performance increase, Sony touted background graphical improvements that weren't visually representative of a performance boost, or at the very least didn't warrant the $200 jump from the standard PS5.

Samsung to cull up to 30% of its global workforce: admin, sales and marketing by end of 2024

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Sep 12, 2024 4:44 AM CDT

Samsung is reportedly culling 30% of its global employees in its sales operations, according to a South Korean newspaper.

Samsung to cull up to 30% of its global workforce: admin, sales and marketing by end of 2024

The South Korean electronics giant is struggling right now in multiple divisions: its semiconductor business can't keep up with TSMC, its HBM division can't beat SK hynix, and its smartphone sales aren't doing so well. Samsung replaced its semiconductor boss back in May, but we haven't seen much fruit from that tree so far.

Reuters' sources have said that one of their sources said that the job cuts at Samsung were being made in preparation for another slowdown in global demand for technology products as the global economy slows. Another source told Reuters that Samsung is "seeking to shore up its bottom line by saving costs".

Kosta Andreadis | Gaming | Sep 12, 2024 4:29 AM CDT

After a beta testing period, Valve's new Steam Families is now available to all users. It allows households of up to five people or family members to share their game libraries. The new system includes the ability to pool multiple copies of games together so more than one person can play a title if there's more than one copy in the greater Steam Families library.

Expanded parental controls, including the ability to allocate 'Child' and 'Adult' roles, are also available. Adults can limit what games can be accessed, set playtime limits, and restrict access to Steam features like the Store, Community, and Friends Chat. More in-depth and robust parental controls are a big part of the new Steam Families system.

Another significant parental feature of Steam Families is a dedicated purchase request system for Child accounts. This system streamlines the process of approving and buying games for kids without using Steam's current 'gifting' system at checkout.

Google has just added 'history' to Search results in a surprise update

Jak Connor | Internet & Websites | Sep 12, 2024 4:01 AM CDT

Google Search is about to get a fantastic improvement through a new partnership between Google and The Internet Archive, a non-profit research library that preserves large portions of the Internet for future accessibility.

Google has just added 'history' to Search results in a surprise update

The new partnership announced via an Internet Archive Blog explains that Google Search will now list archived versions of web pages with a simple link to the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. A user can access this feature by performing a normal Google Search, navigating to a link and the three dots located next to the link, and selecting the "More About This Page" option. After selecting this option, a user will be presented with a Wayback Machine link that showcases previous versions of a webpage.

The new feature will be available starting today, and it will, at its most fundamental, add historical context to webpages, enabling more thorough research to be conducted on topics and, ultimately, Google Search results to be more valuable. The Internet Archive celebrated the new integration, writing the new partnership "underscores the importance of web archiving."

PS5 Pro at an expensive $699: 50M PS4 owners want an upgrade, the best console for GTA 6

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 12, 2024 12:50 AM CDT

Sony has over 50+ million PS4 Pro owners globally, with users looking for a reason to upgrade says an analyst, up to the new beefed-up PS5 Pro console that Sony just announced for $699, debuting on November 7, 2024.

PS5 Pro at an expensive $699: 50M PS4 owners want an upgrade, the best console for GTA 6

In a chat with Rhys Elliott, a Games Industry Analyst with MIDia Research, said he expects the new PS5 Pro to "sell well" to the existing 50,000,000+ strong PS4 Pro audience. Sony did debut the PS4 Pro with a killer feature at the time: 4K HDR, but the new PS5 Pro has 45% faster performance, 2-3x more performance in RT, and AI-powered upscaling through PSSR.

Elliott said that Sony would be silly to not market the console as "the best way to play Grand Theft Auto 6" ahead of GTA 6's game-changing launch in 2025. We've already heard rumors that Sony has "locked down the marketing rights" to GTA 6 for its PS5 Pro and PS5 consoles, with GTA 6 providing a big inticement to PS4 Pro gamers wanting a reason to upgrade to the new PS5 Pro.

Prediction: Sony bundling new $699 PS5 Pro with GTA 6 would be the biggest system seller EVER

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 12, 2024 12:13 AM CDT

Sony's new PlayStation 5 Pro console will cost $699 and it has split gamers: some hate it, and we all know millions will buy it, no matter what the PS5 Pro costs... especially for Grand Theft Auto 6. But, what about a PS5 Pro + GTA 6 bundle? That would surely be the biggest system seller in history.

Prediction: Sony bundling new $699 PS5 Pro with GTA 6 would be the biggest system seller EVER

I still remember in the late when Halo was first announced for the Apple Mac (yes, not the PC or Xbox) adn then Microsoft purchased developer Bungie, and made Halo an Xbox exclusive. It was a system seller, and started the life of the Xbox family of consoles. The same goes for games like Goldeneye 007 back on the Nintendo 64, or Mario Kart 64, and Half-Life for the PC. These games sold systems, millions of them... but what about GTA 6?

Sony has reportedly locked down the marketing rights to GTA 6 for its standard PS5 and newly-revealed PS5 Pro consoles, and now that we have the official PS5 Pro announcement -- 45% faster, 2-3x faster in RT, PSSR upscaling -- I wonder (and have since the PS5 Pro rumors began) how a PS5 Pro + GTA 6 bundle would sell.

Oracle CEO says company is spending $100+ billion on 2000+ data centers, NVIDIA gets 40% of it

Anthony Garreffa | Artificial Intelligence | Sep 11, 2024 8:08 PM CDT

Oracle is pushing all-in with the data center market, promising to spend $100+ billion over the next 4 years, with NVIDIA to get 40% of that $100B as it's the global leader in AI GPUs.

Oracle CEO says company is spending $100+ billion on 2000+ data centers, NVIDIA gets 40% of it

Right now, Oracle has 162 cloud data centers in operation and under construction across the world, explains Oracle chairman and CTO, Larry Ellison. He said: "the largest of these datacenters is 800 megawatts and will contain acres of NVIDIA GPU Clusters for training large scale AI models".

He continued, adding: "Oracle could operate up to 2000 data centers in the future, a significant increase from the 162 currently in operation". It's not just this news, but the Oracle CEO added: "So we're in the middle of designing a data center that's north of the gigawatt that has -- but we found the location and the power place we look at it, they've already got building permits for 3 nuclear reactors. These are the small modular nuclear reactors to power the data center. This is how crazy it's getting. This is what's going on".

PS5 architect admits 30FPS can deliver 'choppier visuals' and 'less responsive controls'

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 11, 2024 6:31 PM CDT

After revealing that 75% of PS5 owners prefer to play their games in 60FPS Performance Modes, Sony console architect Mark Cerny infers that 30FPS gaming is sub-par.

PS5 architect admits 30FPS can deliver 'choppier visuals' and 'less responsive controls'

It sounds like Sony is starting to recognize that 30FPS console gaming isn't up to the standards that gamers expect--or at least the standards that they prefer--hence the PS5 Pro, which was created to deliver more consistent 4K 60FPS gameplay in current-gen titles.

The new $700 mid-gen PS5 Pro was created as a way to bridge the compromise between graphics and frame rates, which has plagued console gaming from the get-go (the PS4 Pro was also likewise made to deliver new graphics and FPS options, giving gamers more choice while trying up-sell 4K UHDTVs).

75% of PS5 owners prefer 60FPS performance modes, not 30FPS graphics modes

PS5 architect Mark Cerny reveals an interesting tidbit about player preferences regarding the age old graphics vs frame rate trade off.

75% of PS5 owners prefer 60FPS performance modes, not 30FPS graphics modes

While most game developers offer two distinct modes for their PS5 games--Fidelity or Performance--Sony has long known that players prioritize in-game frame rates over higher-end graphics. That's according to Sony Interactive Entertainment console architect Mark Cerny, who says that around 75% of all PS5 users prefer to choose performance modes for better and more responsive gameplay.

"When asked to decide on a mode, players typically choose performance mode about three-quarters of the time," Cerny said in the PS5 Pro reveal video.
