LeakedTT: NVIDIA's Tegra TAB gets detailed as it stops by the FCC

Charles Gantt | Mobile Devices | Sep 9, 2013 1:24 PM CDT

We've been hearing a lot of rumors and seeing a lot of leaks about NVIDIA's upcoming Tegra TAB Android-based tablet, but this morning it appears that we're finally getting some solid info on the upcoming device. During a recent visit to the FCC, some interesting information popped up.

It appears that the Tegra TAB name has been confirmed and that the device will in fact feature a Tegra 4 processor. The exact model of the processor is still unknown, but we do know that the Tegra TAB will feature a 7-inch, 1280x800-pixel IPS display. A front "HD" camera of unknown pixel density will be featured alongside a five-megapixel rear-shooter.

Battery capacity is said to be as large as 4,100mAh. The manual included in the filing reveals what appears to be a stock-looking version of Android Jelly Bean. One of the most interesting new features to pop up, however, is the inclusion of a stylus that appears to function much like Samsung's S-Pen. There are still no details of pricing or availability, and we're still not sure if NVIDIA will retail the device themselves or if they will license the design to OEMs such as ASUS, ACER, or Toshiba. Head over to the FCC source below for all of the manuals, images, and other information that is available in the recent filing.

Futuremark releases new 3DMark for iOS benchmarking app for free

Charles Gantt | Software & Apps | Sep 9, 2013 11:36 AM CDT

Today, Futuremark announced the release of its 3DMark benchmarking application for iOS. The new app comes a few months after the release of 3DMark for Android and allows both mobile operating systems to run "unlimited" benchmark tests on any Android or iOS device and compare devices across operating systems.

Futuremark says that the new iOS addition of 3DMark includes everything you would need to accurately benchmark the performance of the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Users can directly compare 3DMark scores to other devices running iOS, Android, Windows, and even Windows RT, once the RT version is released, of course. The company says that testers will now be ready to benchmark and compare any new devices that Apple may release tomorrow during its press conference.

Futuremark has added a new test to 3DMark specifically designed for making chip-to-chip comparisons across mobile devices and operating systems dubbed 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited. This new test can be added to the Android edition of the app by updating to the latest version. Additionally, Futuremark has built a mobile hardware database of all of these scores from the most popular smartphones and tablets that have been benchmarked using the 3DMark application. Check out the sources listed below for both download links as well as a link to the 3DMark mobile hardware database.

Seagate unveils Seagate Ultra Mobile, 500GB storage for smart devices

Anthony Garreffa | Storage | Sep 9, 2013 7:01 AM CDT

Thought the 32GB or 64GB of internal flash storage was never enough? Well, Seagate might have just announced something that will surprise you - the Seagate Ultra Mobile. This is the industry's first purpose-built 500GB storage solution for Android-based devices.

This means that consumers can take around countless hours of music or video, or tens of thousands of images everywhere they go. Seagate has used a Dynamic Data Driver that "intelligently manages the data between the devices' on-board flash and the HDD to provide comparable power and performance of flash-only solutions."

Seagate has also used zero-gravity sensors (ZGS) that will protect the device if it's dropped, as well as improved shock and tolerance for gyroscopic motion supports even when the device is being moved around quickly when you're playing games. This all comes in at just 3.3 oz, which is about the weight of a light bulb. It's built on the 2.5-inch standard, and is just 5mm thick. Power consumption is ultra-low at just 0.14W in standby or idle.

NSA has hacked into Android, BlackBerry and iPhones, accessed data

Anthony Garreffa | Hacking, Security & Privacy | Sep 9, 2013 3:28 AM CDT

Der Spiegel is at it again, reporting that it has NSA documents in its hands that state that the US spy agency accessed data from Apple iPhones, BlackBerry devices and Android-based devices.

Der Spigel stated that most smartphone data can be accessed, including users' contact lists, text message logs and information on geographical locations. The NSA has set up working parties that makes sure each of the main mobile OS' had a "back door" that was accessible to spies. This has stirred memories in Germany, where the paper is based, of the Nazis and the communist era from decades ago.

The one company that has the most at stake would be BlackBerry, who has proudly sold devices on the fact that they the encryption in them is too strong for anyone to crack. Google and Apple, we both know have worked with the NSA previously, so this news should come as a shock to no one. This news also comes on the heels of our latest report where we talked about common encryption protocols were nothing for the NSA.

Grand Theft Auto V is the most expensive game ever made

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 8, 2013 11:14 PM CDT

Grand Theft Auto V has become the most expensive game ever made, and even bumps shoulders with some of the most expensive blockbusters that have come out of Hollywood.

Rockstar Games' GTA V was made on a marketing and development budget of $265 million. Grand Theft Auto V has been under production for five years, with Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive making sure that this is the best open-world game, ever. In the US alone, there has been over 2.5 million pre-orders.

Analysts have high hopes for GTA V, where they expect it to be one of the most-sold games of this generation. With GTA IV selling over 25 million copies, you'd hope that GTA V sells much more than that. I think it would've sold more if it were sold on the PC too, and next-gen consoles. Let's cross our fingers.

Dead Rising 3 will feature multiple endings and post-game roaming

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 8, 2013 7:34 AM CDT

Capcom Vancouver's Dead Rising 3 will feature multiple endings, and post-game roaming according to producer Mike Jones. Jones told the Official Xbox Magazine UK the news, stating that Dead Rising 3 will take place over six days within the game world.

Decisions that players make in these six days will allow for more play as well as multiple, different endings. Jones added: "Previous Dead Risings would always have modes like the Overtime mode, where you get to discover the truth behind everything that's been going on. So there's not just the six days, we're going beyond that if you make the right story decisions. So it's not like choose-your-own-adventure crazy infinite endings, there's a finite amount, but they all [correspond to] meaningful story decisions that you make as you play through."

Dead Rising 3 is set for a holidays 2013 release on the Xbox One, which launches on November 22 in select countries.

Microsoft goes on an 'apology tour' for the Xbox One

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 8, 2013 5:36 AM CDT

Microsoft will release the Xbox One on November 22 to certain countries around the world, but before then the Redmond-based giant is going on an 'apology tour' in the hope of drumming up more sales for its next-gen console.

During a presentation at the GameStop Expo in Las Vegas to promote the Xbox One last week, Xbox Live programming director Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb took questions from the crowd for 30 uninterrupted minutes. This might not sound like a lot, but it's a refreshing take on dealing with consumers directly, instead of taking specific questions, or not answering the hard ones.

Microsoft didn't put on a huge show, there were no videos, huge demonstrations or celebrity appearances, just Major Nelson answering questions regarding Microsoft's next-gen console. Hryb said when asked about how Microsoft would win back customers: "Look, at Xbox, we really care about the community. We're very focused on what is right for gamers. Everybody at Xbox is a gamer. It's not like we just show up, do our work and go home. We want to make this the best game system that you are going to own for the next 10 years."

Light-powered screens could see never-ending battery life for devices

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Sep 8, 2013 2:29 AM CDT

One thing that bothers most of us, is the battery life on our smart devices, but if a revolutionary new technology has anything to do with it, we won't be recharging our mobile devices... ever again.

Wysips (What You See Is Photovoltaic Surface) is the new technology, which converts energy from both sunlight and artificial light into electricity, that could perpetually power your smartphone. Wysips uses light-collecting crystals that can be installed either both underneath, or on top of the screens for smartphones, tablets, and even smartwatches.

Early prototypes have seen decent success so far, where 10 minutes of light exposure resulted in four more minutes of battery life. The crystal component of Wysips is 90% transparent, which is said to be invisible to the naked eye.

Atari founder says Nintendo faces 'path to irrelevance'

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 8, 2013 12:30 AM CDT

Nintendo isn't in the best position right now, facing low sales on its 'next-gen' Wii U console. But the Japanese company is about to face an entire new world of hurt once the next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft launch in the coming weeks and months.

Now we have Atari founder Nolan Bushnell rubbing salt in the wound during an interview with the BBC, saying that Nintendo was left in a "very difficult position" and could be on a "path to irrelevance." Games analysts are currently drawing parallels between the two companies, comparing the Atari Jaguar console from 1993, and the Nintendo Wii U.

He had quite a lot to say: "I don't think handheld game-only devices make sense anymore. Not when you have an iPod or an Android microtablet. When it comes to the console market, I think the market is truncating. Nintendo always had a soft spot for young people - they sort of did the 12-and-under pretty well, and the other guys did the 12-and-over. And now I think the other [consoles] are good enough on those things, and the rush to upgrade from the 12-and-under is not nearly as important."

Kim Dotcom unveils new music service called Baboom

Anthony Garreffa | Software & Apps | Sep 7, 2013 11:30 PM CDT

As a heavy Spotify user, it's going to be very hard to make me, and millions of other Spotify, Pandora, or other music streaming service users change, but Kim Dotcom hopes we will with his new music service, Baboom.

Baboom is still months away from a public release, but it's yet another service in the constantly growing line of services from Mega founder, Kim Dotcom. Baboom is currently being prepared for a public launch, which will launch at Baboom.com. Dotcom has said that he's secured several million dollars in funding for Baboom, and has 22 developers working on it.

Dotcom believes that Baboom will revolutionize the music industry, handing over the power to artists once again. Dotcom told TorrentFreak: "I am really excited about Baboom. I can't wait for artists to see what i have created for them. Their entire career can be managed on Baboom. Artists never had more freedom, transparency and control."

ctOS Mobile app for Watch Dogs lets you challenge your friends

Anthony Garreffa | Software & Apps | Sep 7, 2013 4:28 AM CDT

Ubisoft's upcoming open-world game, Watch Dogs, is looking more impressive by the day, especially with the ctOS Mobile app. The ctOS Mobile app will let you challenge your friends, or poke them if you dominate them in a game.

The news is coming from Anne Lewis, who is a communications associate for Ubisoft, who showed the application off by locating her friend on the app's map of Chicago, tapping on them and starting a challenge. One her friend accepting the challenge, he had to hit four checkpoints within a limited time period. Her job was to stop him from changing the game world from within the app.

She elaborated by saying: "By dragging the helicopter on the screen to hover over the console player's marker (which moved in real-time with his movements on the screen) I was able to see the various aspects of Chicago's infrastructure I could affect. As my opponent stole a car and headed toward an intersection I quickly hacked the traffic lights, sending cars careening into him. His luck held out and he was able to keep moving. If a player dies during the challenge it's not an automatic game over, but he'll have to start back at the beginning and none of the time is returned."

Plextor shows off new M6 SSD plus more M.2 form-factor SSDs at IFA

Charles Gantt | Storage | Sep 6, 2013 7:29 PM CDT

Earlier this week at the IFA trade show in Berlin, Germany, Plextor showed off its new M6 SSD prototype alongside its new M.2 form-factor SSDs. The M6 is the highly anticipated successor to Plextor's M5 series and is said to be aimed at the consumer market with several versions aimed at different portions of the market.

Plextor says that the new drive will feature the latest generation A19 Toggle NAND Flash from Toshiba, which the company says is the smallest and fastest performing MLC on the market today. Additionally, the M6 is just 5mm thick, making it one of the thinnest SSDs available in the consumer market.

Plextor says that its new M.2 line of SSDs follow the latest specifications set by Intel for its Ultrabook standard. "Using a PCIe interface, the Plextor M.2 will overcome the performance bottlenecks of SATA. The new M.2 series has not got a finalized name yet, but the samples shown had lengths of 60 mm and 80 mm. The M.2 series, like all other SSD solutions by Plextor, shall be paired to a controller from Marvell and NAND flash from Toshiba," the company said in a release.

TweakTown demos Samsung's new Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet at IFA 2013

Charles Gantt | Mobile Devices | Sep 6, 2013 11:21 AM CDT

Samsung's Android-based Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet is arguably one of the best on the market, and as our own Johannes Knapp reports, the 2014 edition is even better. Sporting the same faux stitched leather rear housing as its little brother--the Galaxy Note 3--the Galaxy note 10.1 2014 edition can be described as nothing less than a very elegant and highly refined tablet.

The Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition features two different processors based on which region of the world you are in. For those of us in the US, the tablet features a quad-core 2.3GHz QUALCOMM Snapdragon 800 SoC. For those in the Asia Pacific region and most of the rest of the world, the Note 10.1 2014 edition will feature Samsung's eight-core Exynos Octa SoC clocked at 1.9GHZ.

The tablet also features a massively impressive 2,560x1,600-pixel display alongside 3GB of RAM. Combine those specs with an 8220mAh battery, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.0 and you have what is arguably the best Android tablet ever made, if not the best tablet ever made. Additionally, the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition is available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions.

Hynix fire not as bad as expected, company says damage is minimal

Charles Gantt | Current Affairs | Sep 5, 2013 11:32 AM CDT

Following up on yesterday's massive fire at a Hynix Semiconductor facility in China, we've learned this morning that the damage might not be as bad as originally reported. Late last night, I received an official statement from the company that was sent to our friend Jim Handy over at Objective Analysis.

The official report from the company states that the fire started around 16:50 Korean time and was completely extinguished by 18:20. The company says that there were no human casualties, with only one minor injury of an employee. The Hynix official said that while several pictures surfaced on the Internet that showed the fab facility being engulfed in large dark clouds of smoke, the fab itself was not damaged.

The report says that the fire was concentrated in the air purification facilities that are linked to the rooftop of the fab and that this is why the photo showed the building engulfed in smoke. Hynix says that there is no material damage to the fab equipment, the clean room, or any production related equipment. They said they expect to resume operations in a short period of time and that overall production and supply volume would not be materially affected.

Intel Atom Z3770 Bay Trail-based processor performance teased

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Sep 5, 2013 1:28 AM CDT

Intel's Principal Engineer Francois Piednoël has teased some of the first kinda-official performance numbers of its upcoming Atom Z3770 processor, which is a Silvermont-based Bay Trail implementation running at 1.47GHz.

Francois showed AnandTech some of the numbers running the processor through Cinebench 11.5, providing a score of 1.47. Considering AMD's A4-5000 Kabini-based SoC running at 1.5GHz pumps out a score of 1.5, this isn't too bad at all. The Bay Trail SKU that was tested provides performance close to a 2GHz (or so) mobile Penryn-based Core 2 Duo processor.

This means that this tablet SoC provides performance in a multi-threaded environment that compares with a full-fledged 2010 Apple MacBook Air.

Qualcomm announces its own smartwatch, the Qualcomm Toq

Anthony Garreffa | Wearable Computing & Fashion | Sep 5, 2013 12:29 AM CDT

Qualcomm has just stepped into the smartwatch game, announcing its Toq smartwatch at its Qualcomm Uplinq 2013 conference. Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs announced the smarwatch, which featured a Mirasol color screen that can be viewed outdoors in bright sunlight.

Toq features wireless charging capabilities through WiPower LE, which is a nice touch. Qualcomm's Toq will display notifications, and it should feature applications of its own. The Toq can also control music playback and play locally to wireless headsets, but it's also capable of screening calls and showing a bunch of different watchfaces.

Qualcomm does it a bit different with Toq and its Mirasol display, which never turns off. Even with it never turning off, Toq can last multiple days between charge. Qualcomm will release a limited amount of Toq smartwatches in the next couple of weeks, with stock building up in the coming weeks.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition will feature 2560x1600 panel

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Sep 4, 2013 10:27 PM CDT

IFA 2013 - Samsung has just outed its Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition slate, along with the Galaxy Note III smartphone and Galaxy Gear smartwatch. The Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition has been upgraded in virtually all areas, which is great.

The 10.1-inch panel now squeezes in a resolution of 2560x1600, which makes it the highest resolution display on a Samsung tablet that runs Android. Inside of the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition we find Samsung's Exynos 5 Octa SoC, which is an 1.9GHz eight-core processor. 3GB of RAM is also seen inside of the slate, which is the same amount of RAM we find in the Galaxy Note III smartphone.

Samsung has learnt its lesson with the previous Note tablets, ditching the plastic backing and replacing it with a faux-leather backing. On the back of the Note 10.1 2014 Edition we have an 8-megapixel camera, and a 2-megapixel snapper on the front. The Note 10.1 2014 Edition will come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions with expandable storage through its microSD card slot.

ASUS' new Transformer Pad TF701T features NVIDIA's Tegra 4 SoC

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Sep 4, 2013 7:11 PM CDT

IFA 2013 - ASUS has really let loose at this year's IFA, unleashing so many great products and it is continuing to do so with its Transformer Pad TF701T tablet. The Transformer Pad TF701T is powered by NVIDIA's more than capable Tegra 4 SOC (T40X), which is a quad-core chip.

ASUS didn't just decide to put a great SoC inside of the TF701T, as it also features a 10.1-inch 2560x1600 WQXGA panel, this gives us a very nice 300 pixels per inch (ppi). We also have 2GB of DDR3L RAM, 32GB or 64GB of on-board storage which is expandable through both a microSDXC card slot, and an SDXC slot in the dock.

There's a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera, backed up by a 1.2-megapixel shooter up front. The usual 802.11a Wi-Fi is here, joined by Miracast and Bluetooth 3.0 + EDR. One of the things that sets the ASUS' tablets apart is the dock. This dock provides more battery life, with its 16Wh battery providing up to 4 more hours of battery. The TF701T itself has a 31Wh battery that provides up to 13 hours of battery life.
