Google dumps Oracle's MySQL database in favor of MariaDB
Today at the Extremely Large Database conference being held in Stanford California, Google announced that it will be migrating its MySQL systems over to MariaDB. Google has assigned one of its engineers to the MariaDB foundation to aid in the migration.
"Were running primarily on [MySQL] 5.1 which is a little outdated, and so we're moving to MariaDB 10.0 at the moment," said Google senior systems engineer Jeremy Cole in a presentation he gave on the general state of the MySQL ecosystem.
Cole said that Google has been working with the MariaDB foundation since the beginning of the year in an effort to make the migration over to MariaDB as smooth as possible. He went on to say that the migration involves thousands of MySQL servers within the Google ecosystem and that Google's MySQL team is looking forward to working with the SkySQL MariaDB team to advance the reliability and feature set of MariaDB.

Sandisk launches 256GB Extreme Pro CFast card for 4K HD video
Anyone who has ever attempted to shoot HD video knows that anything above 720p requires massive amounts of storage for high frame rates and good quality. With 4K video quickly becoming the norm, Sandisk has responded to this need for high-capacity, high-speed storage for 4K compatible video recording.
Today, Sandisk announced its new 256GB Extreme Pro CFast card that has been designed with 4K videographers in mind. The card has write speeds of up to 65MB/s and fast shot speeds up to 140MB/s. Sandisk says that the card has been designed to support Cinema-quality 4K and full HD video capture.
Unfortunately, this is not a card you just walk down to Walmart and buy when you forget your other one at home. Retailing at $1810, this card is a little pricey for your everyday average shooter. As an ex-professional photographer, the price does strike me as being a little high.

RumorTT: Nudity appears to be confirmed in GTA V, screenshot inside
A recently leaked screenshot popped up on Reddit today that appears to confirm the question on everyone's mind. If the photo is real, then we will see not only nudity in Grand Theft Auto V, but you will be able to grope and fondle the strippers in the game.
We have blurred out the image for obvious reasons (which can be found after the jump), but I can assure you that the image above contains anatomically correct nudity. You can also see a prompt in the image that warns you to not get caught by a bouncer while fondling the stripper.
After the major Hot Coffee controversy that surrounded GTA San Andreas, the decision to include nudity in GTA V is quite unexpected. How do you feel about nudity in GTA V? Let us know in the comments.

Intel's Haswell takes command in new updated NUC lineup
Earlier this week at the 2013 Intel Developer Forum, Intel announced the addition of two new products to its small form-factor NUC lineup, both of which feature the company's new Haswell processors. The D54250WYK sports a Core i5-4250U and the D34010WYK houses the i3-4010U.
While both of these Haswell processors feature hyper-threading, only the Core i5 model supports TurboBoost, which can boost the processor's clock speeds up to 2.6 GHz when temperatures are favorable. The Core i3 model is stuck at its 1.7GHz clock and features a slower integrated GPU than the HD Graphics 5000 IGP inside the i5.
Other than the processors, the two models are basically the same machine. Both feature 4K monitor support thanks to DisplayPort technology, and a mini HDMI connector also provides additional video out connectivity. Gigabit Ethernet is also supported via a port on the back of the box.

NSA has no issues sharing your personal data with Israel
On September 11 of all days, a new leak from Edward Snowden has appeared online thanks to The Guardian, which reports that the NSA shares raw intelligence data with Israel without sifting through it first.
Snowden revealed the startling news, with an intelligence-sharing agreement detailed in a memorandum of understanding between the US spy agency and its Israel counterpart. This has unveiled that the NSA hands over intercepted communications that would contain American citizens' phone call records and e-mails (and most likely much, much more). The agreement between the spy agencies has no legally binding limits on the use of the data by the Israelis.
The deal was inked back in March 2009, with the agreement between the US and Israeli spy agencies "pertaining to the protection of US persons" repeatedly stressing the constitutional rights of Americans to privacy, as well as the need for Israeli intelligence staff to 'respect these rights.' The agreement saw the Israeli spy agency with "raw Sigint", which is signal intelligence.

4K TVs to halve in price within twelve months claims UK retailer
One thing that needs to happen to Ultra HD TVs is the price needs to come down to an affordable level so that they go more mainstream, and according to one UK retailer, this should happen within the next twelve months.
Jonathan Marsh Head Buyer at John Lewis spoke exclusively with TrustedReviews, where he said: "We are going to see big steps in 4K next year. At the moment there is a premium associated with 4K and we have seen that since launching the first 4K TVs a couple of months ago. However, as we've seen these technologies mature, they have come down in price and become much more affordable very quickly."
We have already seen numerous TV manufacturers unveil, and release a few 4K-capable TVs, but pricing is still quite high. Once we see some new screen sizes, with the average being 55-inch or so, come down, this will drag the price down with it. Marsh continues: "With more OLED next year, we will new sizes come to the market which will also bring the price point down to a more manageable level. At the moment all the 4K TVs are pretty big and around 55-inches. The natural step is that we will see 46-inch models developed for next year."

Rockstar says GTA Online will feature over 500 mission at launch
It's no doubt that GTA V is the most highly anticipated game of the year, maybe even the decade. With over $250 million in production, Rockstar has put a lot of effort into the games online mode. During an interview with website Game Informer, Rockstar Games CEO Leslie Benzies said that Grand Theft Auto Online would feature over 500 missions on launch day.
Benzies went on to say that Rockstar plans to utilize GTA Online to create an entire Grand Theft Auto universe that will incorporate everything Rockstar has done, and will do in the future with the series, and then let players freely move between the different worlds. This means that as time progresses we could see other GTA maps pop-up such as Liberty City, Vice City, and even London could make an appearance.
"We've always wanted to create a world with the complexity of a single-player Grand Theft Auto game with the addition of real players. We wanted a world where people could spend years without getting bored of playing the same content over and over," said Benzies. "I think we've managed to achieve something very close to our dream."

Motorola surpasses 100,000 Moto X per week milestone at US factory
In and recent interview with Reuters, Motorola CEO, Dennis Woodside, confirmed that the company is now shipping 100,000 units of its new Moto X Android-based smartphone every week. This is quite a challenge as the company took a unique approach with the Moto X by allowing customers to configure customized color combinations, pre-installed wallpapers, and even a custom welcome message that is seen when you first wake up the phone.
"When you set up to ramp a factory you need a plan, and we have shipment targets we need to make with our carrier partners, and where we need to be right now is 100,000 units and that's where we are," Woodside said. What makes this number even more special is that Motorola produces the Moto X right here in America in a factory near Dallas Texas.
Companies like Samsung, HTC, and Apple may balk at shipments of less than 500,000 units a month, but with Motorola posting a $300 million loss last quarter, and the decision to manufacture the phones here in America, I feel that Motorola is off to a heck of a comeback. Hopefully we will see some truly innovative phones coming out Motorola now the Google appears to be fully steering the ship on its course.

Steam to begin allowing friends and family to share games
Steam has just announced a new service that will allow close friends and family members to share their libraries of games with each other. The service will not however be available to everyone in the beginning. Next week the company will launch Steam Family Sharing and limited beta form while they iron out the bugs.
Steam Family Sharing is designed to allow close friends and family members the ability to play each others games while the earning their own Steam achievements and storing their own saves in the Steam Cloud. This new feature is enabled by authorizing a shared computer to your steam library, and Steam says that up to 10 devices may be shared per account at any given time.
Unfortunately not all steam games will be able to be shared such as some third-party games that require a separate key to play. Additionally subscription-based games will not be able to be shared either. Shared games can only be played by one user at a time, meaning you and your friend cannot use the same shared game to go head-to-head against each other.

PayPal Beacon, a new USB dongle for hands-free payments
PayPal has just announced Beacon, a USB dongle that paves the way for a new generation of hands-free payments. The tiny USB dongle works with Point-of-Sale systems such as Booker, Erply, Leaf, Leapset, Micros, NCR, PayPal Here, Revel, ShopKeep, TouchBistro and Vend. All you need to do is plug into a power source and your brick-and-mortar store is ready for hands-free payments.
PayPal's Beacon uses Bluetooth LE to detect when a shopper enters the store and if they have the PayPal app installed on their device. The company ssays that Beacon won't be able to track customers' locations as they shop, but it will display an image of the shopper on the PoS system. When the customer is ready for the purchase, a verbal confirmation is all that is required to complete the transaction.
I don't like the security on Beacon, as it requires just your voice for authorization but the company has said that it is using multiple levels of trust in the application. This gives the customer the control of which retail stores can acknowledge their presence in the store, and which stores are capable of using automatic payments. PayPal also gives the option of providing the consumer with a pending payment notification, where they have to confirm it on-screen before it is authorized.

RumorTT: Intel working on overclockable SSD
IDF 2013 - Intel showed off how to overclock an SSD today at IDF 2013 in San Francisco. While this certainly doesn't prove that they are working on releasing an overclockable SSD to the public, it certainly shows that they've been toying with the idea. The general idea is that there are several knobs inside the SSD that can be adjusted, resulting in gains of up to 25%.
When pushed, Intel Product Manager James Slattery would only say that, "Intel is not announcing an overclockable SSD product at this time." As we all know, this phrase all but confirms that Intel is working on an overclockable SSD product to be released later. While not confirmed, we'd put more than a grain of salt towards this rumor.
Despite further pushing, I was unable to get any further information about a possible product, though I expect we might start seeing K-edition SSDs that will feature unlocked "knobs" for overclockers to play around with. It's important to note that you will not want to put important data on an overclocked SSD as reliability and validity of data is not guaranteed.

OC Main Event sponsored by ASUS, Intel and Corsair caught on film
Trace Hagan, our COD dog loving man on the ground at the Intel Developer Forum has been running around like a mad man today capturing as much content as he could, with one of the bigger events not associated with, but close to IDF is the OC Main Event sponsored by Intel, ASUS and Corsair.
The first video we have is of Charles Wirth, a blogger/overclocker from XtremeSystems. Worth overclocked his Core i7 4960X on ASUS' X79-based Rampage IV Black Edition. He has it running at 5.75GHz running Cinebench with a world record overclock. Some nice work there, using LN2 as always.
This next video is a tease of the amount of liquid nitrogen (LN2) that the overclockers at the OC Main Event are going through. The tanks are just gigantic, and if you put them all together it would probably be enough to stop the T-1000 for a few minutes. Hasta La Vista, baby.
