AMD releases the full specifications of the Radeon R9 Fury X

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Jun 17, 2015 1:22 AM CDT

E3 2015 - Now that AMD has made its Radeon R9 Fury X official, we're finding out the official specifications behind the HBM-based, Fiji XT-powered video card.

The Radeon R9 Fury X is built on the 28nm process with 4096 stream processors, 64 Compute Units, 256 TMUs, 64 ROPs, 4GB of HBM on a 4096-bit memory bus resulting in up to 512GB/sec of memory bandwidth. You'll need two 8-pin PCIe power connectors to get it running, with the Radeon R9 Fury X having a TDP of 275W.

The total compute performance of the card sits at 8.6 TFLOPS with the GPU clocked at 1050MHz and the RAM at 500MHz/1Gbps. The texture fill rate on the Fury X is at 268.8 GT/s, with FreeSync, DirectX 12, Mantle, Vulkan support and much more.

AMD Radeon R9 Fury X is much smaller than the Radeon R9 290X

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Jun 17, 2015 12:29 AM CDT

E3 2015 - Our friends over at Hardware Canucks were able to snap a photo of the PCBs of the AMD Radeon R9 Fury X and Radeon R9 290X, where we get to see what's making them tick.

As you can see, the top card being the Radeon R9 Fury X is much smaller than the R9 290X thanks to its use of High Bandwidth Memory. You can see the 4GB of HBM sitting next to the die itself, which when compared to the 16 chips of GDDR5 on the R9 290X which surround the entire GPU, it saves some considerable physical space on the PCB.

This space saving and use of HBM also saves space to the right of the GPU, where memory VRMs aren't needed. VRMs require more power, and pump out a great amount of heat, but the omission of these on the R9 Fury X means we should get a card with a ton of power, without making huge amounts of noise or running overly hot. Even if it does require watercooling by default.

VR: Helping sports fans get an up close & personal experience

Michael Hatamoto | Extended Reality (XR) | Jun 16, 2015 7:53 PM CDT

Golden State Warriors owner Peter Guber, an outspoken supporter of virtual reality (VR) technology, hopes to see VR help sports fans enjoy the viewing experience in a new way. There are a number of different uses for VR, but finding ways to include it to enhance viewer experience of sports could be a great long-term money maker.

"It doesn't replace being here. That's still a different experience," Guber recently told CNBC. "But it is a phenomenally new and exciting method to bring basketball to disparate communities all over the country."

As CEO of the Mandalay Entertainment Group and investor in NextVR, Guber said the live, on-demand VR content from NextVR should be available within the next year. Pricing details are still being worked out, and while content distribution agreements must be completed, there is a great opportunity to push sports entertainment to the next level.

It looks like Charlie Brown is ready to chase around the little red-haired girl, while Lucy is rather mean, and Sally is her usual jolly self.

It turns out there is a lot of early skepticism of the new movie, with some viewers questioning the music choices - while others claim it "feels like a huge money grab." We'll just have to wait and see.

North Korea cracking down on uncensored mobile Internet access

Michael Hatamoto | Mobile Devices | Jun 16, 2015 9:37 AM CDT

It appears the North Korean government has cracked down on mobile phone access to foreigners living inside the reclusive country. Foreign residents have been blocked from accessing 3G networks, while North Korean citizens remain unable to visit Internet websites outside of the country. Foreign visitors have the ability to purchase 3G mobile SIM cards, with access only lasting about the same amount of time as their visit.

"Unfortunately we are facing Internet service outage from the local Internet provider's side with no estimated time, we will keep you posted once the service is back to normal," according to a memo sent to subscribers of the Koryolink mobile provider.

The block started on Friday local time, and it's unknown what caused the sudden restriction. Of the country's 24 million residents, about 2.5 million of them are currently phone subscribers. There is concern that users with access to the Internet will find unrestricted information, which can be shared with other residents.

SKHynix slips, announces the AMD Radeon R9 Fury X with HBM1

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Jun 16, 2015 5:00 AM CDT

During Computex 2015, we delivered the world exclusive news that AMD would be calling its HBM-powered next-gen video card the Radeon R9 Fury X, something that SKHynix just confirmed through a press release.

SKHynix said that the new HBM1 used on the Radeon R9 Fury X is made on their advanced 20nm-class DRAM process technology, offering a 1024-bit memory interface, with 128GB/sec. Not only that, but it will consume over 50% less power than traditional GDDR5 used on today's video cards. Thanks to four chips being stacked on top of one another, that 1024-bit interface turns into 4096-bit on the Radeon R9 Fury X, with 512GB/sec of memory bandwidth being made available.

In the press release, SKHynix said: "AMD announced the Radeon R9 Fury X, the world's first video card with HBM technology in Los Angeles on June 16th. The AMD Radeon R9 Fury X video card utilizes 4GB HBM1 to achieve up to 512GB/second memory bandwidth performance while reducing memory subsystem power by up to 85%".

Memo: Concern US cannot counter Islamic State's social media efforts

Michael Hatamoto | Internet & Websites | Jun 15, 2015 10:40 PM CDT

The US State Department recently issued an internal memo that shows growing frustration in the effort to combat the Islamic State on social media. The US has tried launching "countermessaging" campaigns that have only been "trumped" by recent IS efforts, according to officials.

"The memo is an assessment not of the larger counter-ISIL messaging effort, but how the small group of coalition members communicates internally and externally, said John Kirby, State Department spokesman, while speaking to the New York Times.

There is concern that the Obama Administration is leading a failed effort to combat IS in Iraq, with the extremist group trying to solidify its so-called caliphate.

At the time of writing, it was at $762,862 but even after a few minutes I refreshed the page to see it at $782,325 - which means it's raising around $20,000 every 2-3 minutes at this point in time. There are over 9000 backers so far, with Shenmue 3 being a "true sequel to the classic open world action RPG games, Shenmue and Shenmue 2. Survey: Apple Watch still has a lot to do to win over consumers

Michael Hatamoto | Wearable Computing & Fashion | Jun 15, 2015 9:45 PM CDT

The Apple Watch has given the smartwatch sector and wearables industry a boost, but there is still plenty of work left to be done, according to a survey from UserTesting. In its survey, 38 percent of users said they would recommend it, while 35 percent were passive and 27 percent had negative experiences.

Watch owners seemed most frustrated by third-party apps that have proven to be rather clunky - and despite the Apple Watch showing great potential - there are significant performance problems that must be addressed.

"These survey results are not overwhelming," said Michael Mace, VP of mobile at UserTesting, in a statement published by Forbes. "If Apple wants people to get excited and recommend heavily, it needs to get additional hooks. Third-party apps will be the best way."

The Elite Controller features a 3.5mm jack in place of the proprietary input, with beautiful curves, tweaks and more. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has said that the new Elite Controller is "an elite controller for the elite gamer". Gamers can tweak and customize the controller as they want, sporting a hairless trigger that locks, providing gamers with more precise control in shooters on the Xbox One. Not only that, but there's a textured rolling pad in place of the D-pad, and bumpers.

But, if you didn't like the fact that the textured rolling pad replaced the D-pad, you can remove it and install the D-pad thanks to the customizability of the Elite Controller. The stainless steel paddle buttons are completely removable, with gamers having full control of the thumbstick sensitivity, where they can tweak the minimum and maximum levels of the top triggers to their liking.
