Researchers working on exoskeleton controllable by brainwaves

Michael Hatamoto | Science, Space, & Robotics | Aug 23, 2015 3:50 PM CDT

Researchers from Germany and Korea are developing a new exoskeleton able to be controlled by the wearer's brain waves.

Using electroencephalogram (EEG) technology, wearers are able to move forward, turn left and right, or sit and stand while looking at a computer screen. The five flickering LEDs operate at different frequencies, which are identified in an EEG readout - once the signal is accurately identified, the exoskeleton is able to operate normally.

"Exoskeletons create lots of electrical 'noise,'" said Klaus Muller, a researcher and author of a paper published in the Journal of Neural Engineering, in a statement published by Phys.org. "The EEG signal gets buried under all this noise - but our system is able to separate not only the EEG signal, but the frequency of the flickering LED within this signal."

Looks like Ashley Madison site operator should prepare for lawsuits

Michael Hatamoto | Hacking, Security & Privacy | Aug 23, 2015 3:26 PM CDT

Avid Life Media and Avid Dating Life are not going to have a fun time following the fallout of Ashley Madison's data being publicly dumped to the Internet. Thousands of Canadians had their privacy violated following the breach, which included personal names, email addresses, home addresses, and message history - and the lawsuits are going to roll in.

Charney Lawyers and Sutts, Strosberg LLP filed a $578 million class-action lawsuit on behalf of Ashley Madison members located in Canada. The lawyers won't try to include the Impact Team in the class-action lawsuit, as seeking damages from a foreign-based hacker group would be difficult.

"Numerous former users of AshleyMadison.com have approached the law firms to inquire about their privacy rights under Canadian law," the law firms said. "They are outraged that AshleyMadison.com failed to protect its users' information. In many cases, the users paid an additional fee for the website to remove all of their user data, only to discover that the information was left intact and exposed."

Could Bungie be working on bringing Destiny to the PC?

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 23, 2015 2:14 AM CDT

All signs are pointing to Bungie making Destiny available on the PC in the near future, with the developer hiring a "PC Compatability Tester". Bungie has the job listed on its website.

The description reads: "The PC Compatibility Tester will evaluate PC hardware-specific features and ensure various systems work together across multiple PC configurations to provide a great experience". The developer is looking for someone that is "experienced and comfortable with building PCs from scratch".

Back at E3 2014, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg teased three months before Destiny launched, that the PC version of the game was "something we're talking about and looking at very carefully". Earlier in 2014, Bungie writer Eric Osborne teased: "We have a lot of people who play on PCs. We have a lot of appetite to build that experience".

Sharp shows off an 80-inch 8K TV, with a resolution of 7680x4320

Anthony Garreffa | Displays | Aug 22, 2015 8:29 PM CDT

Now that 4K is much more established than it was a few years ago, 8K is now appearing about the place with Sharp displaying the first retail 8K TV on a massive 80-inch 8K TV.

Sharp shows off an 80-inch 8K TV, with a resolution of 7680x4320

Sharp's new LCD-80XU35A is a massive 80-inch 8K TV, with a native resolution of 7680x4320 - a huge jump on 3840x2160, the native resolution of Ultra HD, and 4096x2160 of '4K'. Even though 4K is generally referred to as 3840x2160, that's actually 'Ultra HD'. Anyway, Sharp's new TV is different to the usual 4K TVs on the market, where the 80XU35A features a "new generation of four-color technology" as well as an "X8-MEP professional image processing engine".

The new four-color technology that has been deployed on the 8K TV has a fourth color, yellow, which joins the usual RBG (red, green, blue) color spectrum. This allows the 8K-capable TV to reach a wider color gamut and more clarity than a 4K TV - on top of the huge pixel increase. These technologies, on top of the native 7680x4320 resolution, will have a massive increase in picture quality for both video content, and gaming.

NVIDIA partners with ESL, trying to win over new customers

Michael Hatamoto | Gaming | Aug 22, 2015 3:36 PM CDT

The Electronic Sports League (ESL) is teaming up with NVIDIA, contributing all GeForce GTX GPUs for PCs used in the ESL One event. The massive Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament features some of the best teams in the world competing for more than $250,000 in prizes.

"GeForce GTX is our de facto standard for professional eSports events," said Ulrich Schulze, VP of pro gaming at ESL, in a statement. "CS:GO players require extremely high frame rates and as low latency as possible. NVIDIA GeForce GTX and G-sync technologies deliver on all fronts."

As eSports grows, with even more people viewing live and recorded streams over the Internet, it's a great opportunity for the NVIDIA logo to be prominently displayed. There were almost half a million people watching the tournament yesterday and there should be large amounts of viewers throughout the rest of the weekend.

Astronauts recently chowed down on space-grown lettuce

Michael Hatamoto | Science, Space, & Robotics | Aug 22, 2015 2:20 PM CDT

The six crew members stationed aboard the International Space Station (ISS) became the first humans to eat space-grown food, after munching on a harvested crop of red romaine lettuce.

Using technology built with partner company Orbital Technologies, the lettuce was grown without soil in an air or mist environment. Growing plants aeroponically, they don't require as much water or fertilizer, grow faster, and tend not to have a high rate of disease.

Prior to eating the lettuce, astronauts used citric acid-based sanitizing wipes to clean their fresh veggies. This is an important glimpse towards the future, as NASA looks for new ways to provide a sustainable food supply that can be created aboard the space station.

NASA researchers learning from gecko grippers, helping inspire new R&D

Michael Hatamoto | Science, Space, & Robotics | Aug 22, 2015 10:45 AM CDT

Researchers at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are researching new ways to get things to stick in space, and have found inspiration from geckos.

NASA researchers learning from gecko grippers, helping inspire new R&D

Unlike tape, which loses its ability to adhere objects together after several uses, geckos have tiny hairs on the bottom of their feet so they are able to easily cling to objects over and over again. Researchers now hope a new material with thin synthetic hairs is able to make the material stick to desired surfaces - even in space.

The new technology has a great advantage over Velcro, a popular solution used in space, as it doesn't leave residue and there is no mating surface required on intended targets. The new gecko-inspired gripping technology is being tested during microgravity tests, including on a 20-pound cube and 250-pound person.

Bethesda has high hopes for Doom multiplayer gaming fun

Michael Hatamoto | Gaming | Aug 22, 2015 9:55 AM CDT

It looks like Bethesda is looking forward to the launch of the latest Doom video game, and has high hopes for its entrance into multiplayer action.

"It has some old school sensibilities but it is doing it in a very modern, fresh next-gen way," said Pete Hines, VP of PR and marketing at Bethesda, in a statement to MCV. "The multiplayer is not your traditional first-person shooter multiplayer. IT is not one shot and the other guy is dead, it is not about who has the fastest trigger finger or reactions."

Hines also said Doom could battle "toe-to-toe" against other "really big shooters," as the multiplayer dynamics offer "something you're not going to get from many other first-person shooters."

Political leader: Used Ashley Madison for 'opposition research'

Michael Hatamoto | Hacking, Security & Privacy | Aug 22, 2015 9:22 AM CDT

Louisiana GOP Executive Director Jason Dore confirmed his name was one of millions exposed in the Ashley Madison data dump.

The Republican Party statewide director used his full name and former personal credit card billing address, but claims he was doing a bit of research for his Doré Jeansonne law firm:

"As the state's leading opposition research firm, our law office routinely searches public records, online databases and websites of all types to provide clients with comprehensive reports," Doré; told The Times-Picayune. "Our utilization of this site was for standard opposition research. Unfortunately, it ended up being a waste of money and time."

DARPA interested in helping develop DDoS protection systems

Michael Hatamoto | Hacking, Security & Privacy | Aug 22, 2015 9:03 AM CDT

DARPA wants to help develop new solutions to defend against distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, with foreign cybercriminals launching large volumes of attacks against US military and government targets.

The Extreme DDoS Defense (XD3) aims to provide a DDoS countermeasure system that is able to identify incoming attacks, and help defend networks. Depending on the attack sophistication, DARPA wants to have a response time of 10 seconds or less - a difficult challenge, but an important one that could be used in the private sector and by the government/military.

"In general, the program aims to thwart DDoS attacks by dispersing cyber assets (physically and/or logically), disguising the characteristics and behaviors of those assets, and mitigating the attacks (especially low-volume attacks) that still penetrate the targeted environment," according to the DARPA Broad Agency announcement, asking for applicants.

Nintendo might greenlight movie adaptations of iconic franchises

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 22, 2015 8:13 AM CDT

Throughout the decades Nintendo has been forced to reinvent itself in some capacity with every new generation, and now it looks like the Japanese gaming giant might make a dramatic change and open the doors to film adaptations of its beloved franchises like The Legend of Zelda.

"Because games and movies seem like similar mediums, people's natural expectation is we want to take our games and turn them into movies," Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto said in an interview with Fortune. "I've always felt video games, being an interactive medium, and movies, being a passive medium, mean the two are quite different."

"As we look more broadly at what is Nintendo's role as an entertainment company, we're starting to think more and more about how movies can fit in with that," he added. "And we'll potentially be looking at things like movies in the future."

Take-Two: GTA V tops 54M units shipped, GTA series reaches 220M

Michael Hatamoto | Gaming | Aug 22, 2015 6:49 AM CDT

Grand Theft Auto V has topped 54 million copies shipped, with the Grand Theft Auto series reaching 220 million units, according to Take-Two Interactive. The disclosure was filed in a recent SEC report, with the game studio describing 2015 as "one of [its] best years ever."

Instead of noting how many units have been sold, the number of units shipped describes shipments to game retailers. However, it's still an impressive accomplishment, as Grand Theft Auto one of the most successful game franchises - still unable to close in on Mario or Pokemon, but ahead of Call of Duty.

However, Grand Theft Auto could put pressure on Pokemon - which tallies close to 300 million - as there are new game updates and editors in the works.

Double your DualShock 4's battery life for just $5

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 22, 2015 5:44 AM CDT

Want your DualShock 4 to last longer? The solution is simple--just swap out the battery.

With a sleek feel and an innovative touchpad, the PS4's wireless DualShock 4 controller is arguably one of the best controllers in recent memory, but it has one problem: the power-draining lightbar. Although the lightbar is a nifty little feature that actually changes color to signal in-game interaction, most PS4 users would be happy to nix the light just to get some extra usage time before having to recharge.

The easiest solution is simply unscrewing the DualShock 4 and swapping out its stock 1,000 mAh battery and replacing it with this 2,000 mAh battery for just $4.32 which will double its battery life. Or you could spend $13 for Nyko's PS4 PowerPak.

Nintendo NX's games will come on cartridges, no disc drive supported

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 22, 2015 1:18 AM CDT

A new patent filing has unloaded a bevy of new information on Nintendo's mysterious NX console, giving a new perspective on what Nintendo is cooking up for the future. The patent, which was filed in February and just released, describes Nintendo's filing as a "Stationary Game Apparatus, Game Apparatus, Game System, Recording Medium and Speed Control Method".

What we know so far is that the NX won't have a disc drive, that it sports two NAND flash memory banks as well as a primary hard-disk for storage, a processor, and its very own Wii U-like wireless display controller. Rather than relying on Blu-ray discs the console will instead rely on SD memory cards, which herald a nostalgic transition back to the cartridge medium which most of us grew up on. Only instead of the 128MB SNES cards of our youth, the NX will need at least 32-64GB SD cards to keep up with today's demanding games. It's likely that the system will also be buffered by digital games and apps via Nintendo's eShop.

According to the filing, the NX includes "a processor, a first memory, a second memory, an internal HDD (Hard Disk Drive), an image output unit , a communication unit, a wireless communication unit, a power supply unit, an HDD connection unit, a card slot, and a wireless display controller".

AMD reportedly launching its HBM-based Radeon R9 Nano on August 27

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 21, 2015 11:32 PM CDT

One of the more surprising video cards in AMD's new Fiji-powered lineup was the super-small Radeon R9 Nano, which is only as long as the PCI Express x16 port that it gets installed into.

The Radeon R9 Nano uses the same Fiji GPU that the R9 Fury and R9 Fury X are based on, with 4GB of HBM on-board. AMD is teasing that the R9 Nano has 2x the performance-per-watt compared to the Hawaii-based R9 290X, which is quite the claim. Especially when you consider that the R9 Nano will be using just 175W of power.

As for the performance compared to the Radeon R9 Fury X, it will reportedly have up to 85-90% of the performance that the Fury X does, leaving it toe-and-toe with the R9 Fury. If this is true, the R9 Nano will become AMD's most exciting video card released out of all of the Fury and 300 series cards.

Avid Life Media sending takedown notices following data dump

Michael Hatamoto | Hacking, Security & Privacy | Aug 21, 2015 9:26 PM CDT

Avid Life Media has gone on the offensive following the Ashley Madison data dump, sending takedown notices to social networking websites and file-sharing services.

Stolen data includes data of up to 33 million users, and while removing data from Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, and other sites has been successful, it's going to be nearly impossible to scrub the data dump from the Internet.

The data is out there, and there are plenty of links to anyone looking for a searchable database - yielding everything from names, usernames, email addresses, and sexual preferences - as Avid Life Media tries a desperate effort to fix its PR disaster.

Divorce lawyers could be busy following Ashley Madison data dump

Michael Hatamoto | Hacking, Security & Privacy | Aug 21, 2015 5:32 PM CDT

It looks like spouses are calling divorce lawyers after finding potentially unfaithful partners listed as members of Ashley Madison.

A report published by The Times indicates relationship counseling services and divorce lawyers have seen an uptick in phone calls and correspondence from angry spouses. After 33 million members were exposed, it's likely a similar trend is likely to happen in the United States and elsewhere in the world - as more people search the database.

The data dump has created "lots of difficult emotions" for partners finding spouses in the Ashley Madison data dump, said Denise Knowles, a counselor at Relate counseling service, told The Times.
