TSMC boss confirms it will build 3nm chips at its Arizona, USA factory

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 21, 2022 9:28 PM CST

TSMC has announced that it will be producing next-gen 3nm chips at its new factory in the USA, with its factory in Arizona not completely finished, but TSMC founder Morris Chang has provided the world with an update.

TSMC boss confirms it will build 3nm chips at its Arizona, USA factory

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) founder Morris Chang said on Monday: "Three-nanometre, TSMC right now has a plan, but it has not been completely finalised. It has almost been finalised - in the same Arizona site, phase two. Five-nanometre is phase one, 3-nanometre is phase two".

Chang was speaking with reporters in Taipei after he returned from the APEC summit that was held last week in Thailand, that the next-gen 3nm fabrication plant would be in the same location as the 5nm plant being built in Arizona. TSMC will be holding a "tool-in" ceremony for its new Arizona plant, which will take place on December 6, with Chang being in attendance -- along with TSMC customers and suppliers, as well as U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

AMD has LOL moment at NVIDIA: 'stay safe this holiday season'

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 21, 2022 8:23 PM CST

AMD is taking the perfect opportunity to jebait its competitor NVIDIA, teasing the company and its fiery 16-pin "12VHPWR" power connector melting, or catching fire on NVIDIA's new flagship GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card.

AMD has LOL moment at NVIDIA: 'stay safe this holiday season'

AMD's Senior Director of Gaming Marketing Sasa Marinkovic took to Twitter a couple of days ago with a rather simple, but spicy tweet: "stay safe this holiday season" and tagged the official AMD Radeon Twitter account, with a picture of the dual 8-pin PCIe power connectors on the upcoming RDNA 3-based Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics cards.

NVIDIA's entire flock of GeForce RTX 40 series "Ada Lovelace" graphics cards are using the new 16-pin "12VHPWR" power connector, while AMD is continuing on with the industry standard 8-pin PCIe power connectors on its new Radeon RX 7000 series "RDNA 3" graphics cards.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 series GPUs: similar, better launch supply than RTX 40 series

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 21, 2022 7:23 PM CST

AMD is preparing a larger volume of RDNA 3-powered Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics cards for the big December 13 launch according to the latest rumors.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 series GPUs: similar, better launch supply than RTX 40 series

MyDrivers has reported from sources of theirs in the upstream supply chain that AMD is increasing the number of orders for its upcoming RDNA 3-powered Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics cards... where we could see more Navi 31-based GPUs at launch than NVIDIA had of its GeForce RTX 4090 and GeForce RTX 4080 "Ada Lovelace" graphics cards.

We know from the current reports that NVIDIA has reportedly shipped out 160,000+ graphics cards so far -- that's both the flagship AD102-based GeForce RTX 4090 and AD103-based GeForce RTX 4080 -- with over 80% of those 160,000 cards being the higher-end GeForce RTX 4090. AMD will not be competing against the GeForce RTX 4090, even with its new Radeon RX 7900 XTX, which is being aimed directly at the GeForce RTX 4080.

NVIDIA: we've only had 50 cases of melted 12VHPWR connectors on GeForce RTX 4090

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 20, 2022 10:09 PM CST

NVIDIA has finally, finally weighed in on the explosive issue of 16-pin "12VHPWR" power connectors melting on their expensive new flagship GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards.

NVIDIA: we've only had 50 cases of melted 12VHPWR connectors on GeForce RTX 4090

After an extensive investigation and wicked video put out by the folks at GamersNexus, NVIDIA has released an official statement on what the hell is going on with the melting 12VHPWR power connectors. NVIDIA has said that they are "aware of about 50 cases globally" of melting GeForce RTX 4090 power connectors.

NVIDIA says that their findings to date suggest that the common issue with faulty GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards is that the 16-pin 12VHPWR power connector is "not fully plugged into" the graphic card. The company suggests that you plug in the power dongle (the 16-pin to 4 x 8-pin PCIe adapter) into the graphics card first, to ensure that the 12VHPWR power connector is firmly, and evenly plugged in, before you put the GeForce RTX 4090 onto your motherboard.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 sales hit 130,000 while RTX 4080 sits on shelves

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 20, 2022 9:11 PM CST

NVIDIA's monster new GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card is out in the wild, with reports from last week teasing the company had shipped 100,000+ of its AD102-based GPU... but now those numbers are climbing quickly.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 sales hit 130,000 while RTX 4080 sits on shelves

According to a few sources, NVIDIA has reportedly shipped over 130,000 of its flagship GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards... which is interesting to see, considering how expensive these graphics cards are. The new GeForce RTX 4090 has absolutely no competition on the market right now, and even when AMD launches its new Navi 31-powered Radeon RX 7900 XTX, it won't match the GeForce RTX 4090.

We are being told that NVIDIA has shipped 130,000+ of the flagship GeForce RTX 4090, and just 30,000 of the second-fastest Ada Lovelace GPU -- the GeForce RTX 4080. It shouldn't come as a big surprise considering the GeForce RTX 4090 is fantastically fast, and only a few hundred more dollars than the GeForce RTX 4080... leaving the AD103-based GeForce RTX 4080 sitting on retailer shelves.

GALAX GeForce RTX 4090 HOF breaks another 14 world records, pushed to 3.85GHz

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 20, 2022 6:24 PM CST

GALAX has already been smashing overclocking world records left, right, and center with its new flagship GeForce RTX 4090 HOF... recently smashed 20 world records, and now the team is back destroying 14 more world records.

GALAX GeForce RTX 4090 HOF breaks another 14 world records, pushed to 3.85GHz

The new GALAX GeForce RTX 4090 HOF (Hall of Fame) graphics card was pushed to an impressive 3.5GHz in the previous overclocking mission, but now the team has pushed the AD102 GPU even further: 3.825GHz, the highest GPU clock on NVIDIA's new GeForce RTX 4090 so far.

NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang did promise during its GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card reveal that the team had pushed Ada Lovelace to past 3.0GHz in their labs... and in my own testing you're not going to breach much past 3.0GHz, but with the GALAX GeForce RTX 4090 HOF and chilled with LN2 cooling... it seems 4.0GHz isn't too far away now.

Intel forced to cough up $949 million in patent troll to VLSI

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 17, 2022 11:26 PM CST

Intel has been ordered by a federal jury in Texas to pay VLSI Technology LLC a rather large sum for patent infringement, costing Intel $948.8 million.

Intel forced to cough up $949 million in patent troll to VLSI

If you didn't know who VLSI is, they're a patent-holding company that's associated with SoftBank Group Corp-owned private equity firm Fortress Investment Group, who argued during the six-day trial that Intel's previous-gen Cascade Lake and Skylake processors violated their patents covering improvements to data processing.

An Intel spokesperson said that the company "strongly disagrees" with the verdict (of course) and that the company has plans to appeal, with the Intel spokesperson adding that the case is "one example of many that shows the U.S. patent system is in urgent need of reform". VSI's own law firm declined for comment.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 power connector MELTS at 250C+ tested by GamersNexus

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 17, 2022 9:11 PM CST

NVIDIA has been embroiled in controversy with its flagship GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card and new 16-pin "12VHPWR" power connector, and now GamersNexus have done the world a favor... pushed it to its limits... melting the cable at over 250C.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 power connector MELTS at 250C+ tested by GamersNexus

The team at GamersNexus used an X-ray imaging and scanning electron microscope inspection for the card in a great amount of detail, done by a third-party failure-analysis lab on the 12VHPWR power connector. GamersNexus added that his personal sources at AIB partners say that the risk of issues on their GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards was somewhere between "0.05% and 0.1% which is virtually nothing... but it's still a major problem at the end of the day.

Anyone can have their 12VHPWR power connector on the flagship GeForce RTX 4090, especially if you don't plug it in correctly, or get foreign objects (how?!) or bits of plastic and metal that are induced in the process of seating the game, or at the end of the day, a manufacturing issue. The main issue seems to stem from people not seating the game properly, or pulling at it, or the cable out of the card at an angle. Boom, failure.

7 x GeForce RTX 4090 cards in OctaneBench suck down nearly 3000W of power

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 15, 2022 6:39 PM CST

We all know that NVIDIA's new GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card can use a hell of a lot of power, but how about 7 of them running together? That's exactly what PugetSystems has done, and boy... does it look oh-so-nice.

7 x GeForce RTX 4090 cards in OctaneBench suck down nearly 3000W of power

PugetSystems built a bloody high-end setup that includes an AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5995 WX processor with 64 cores and 128 threads of power, installed into an ASUS Pro WX WRX80E-SAGE Wi-Fi motherboard, joined with 128GB of DDR4-3200 memory, a 2TB Samsung 980 PRO SSD... and get this: not one, not two, but 4 x Super Flower LEADEX 1600W power supplies that have 6400W of power at the ready.

Using all of those 8-pin PCIe power connectors would be the 7 x NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards, with each of them having a 16-pin PCIe power connector -- and then 4 x 8-pin power adapters per graphics card -- meaning that PugetSystems required an insane 28 x 8-pin PCIe power connectors just to get the 7 x GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards up and running. I mean, L-O-L! The entire system will cost around $30,000 if you wanted to know... not bad.

PowerColor's new Radeon RX 7900 Hellhound series teased

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 15, 2022 5:53 PM CST

PowerColor's upcoming Radeon RX 7900 series Hellhound graphics card has been teased by PowerColor Japan... and man, it looks great.

PowerColor's new Radeon RX 7900 Hellhound series teased

The company has already confirmed its upcoming AMD RDNA 3-powered Radeon RX 7900 Devil series graphisc cads, but this is PowerColor's first foray into the high-end GPU market using the Hellhound family of graphics cards. The most powerful Hellhound graphics card was based on the Radeon RX 6700 XT, which uses the Navi 22 GPU... but this new Radeon RX 7900 Hellhound series using the Navi 31 GPU is going to be leaps and bounds faster.

PowerColor is going with a totall new style, and a beautiful one at that -- with a fantastic-lookiing backplate, I must add -- featuring dual 8-pin PCIe power connectors and a great use of RGB lighting through the card. Funnily enough (well, to the beasty Ada Lovelace-powered GeForce RTX 4090 and GeForce RTX 4080 graphics cards) the new PowerColor Radeon RX 7900 Hellhound series graphics cards and their dual 8-pin PCIe power connectors have the same power connector setup as the much, much slower PowerColor Radeon RX 6700 Hellhound graphics card.

Hours before NVIDIA officially launched its new GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card, their official Taiwan Twitter account was hacked, promoting Dogecoin, Bitcoin, and Ethereum.

NVIDIA Taiwan Twitter account hacked: promotes Dogecoin, Bitcoin, Ethereum

The Taiwanese account for NVIDIA hasn't been used all that much in the last few years, but then a tweet came out of nowhere promoting Dogecoin (DOGE), Bitcoin (BTC), and Ethereum (ETH). The NVIDIA Taiwan Twitter account was verified, from an official account... showing that everyone should be careful, always.

The tweet has since been removed, so you don't need to worry about it anymore, but screenshots were snapped for prosperity. The account has also been suspended since the tweet, which is good to see, so people don't get ripped off. Unfortunately, the account could've been used for good: promoting NVIDIA's just-unleashed GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card.

GALAX's monster GeForce RTX 4090 HOF breaks 20 world records

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 13, 2022 6:27 PM CST

GALAX is the only one in the world with a super-ridiculous-high-end GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card, with its GeForce RTX 4090 HOF (Hall of Fame) graphics card destroying world records easily.

GALAX's monster GeForce RTX 4090 HOF breaks 20 world records

The new GALAX GeForce RTX 4090 HOF graphics card has been punished by Benchlife, breaking 20 world records that include 3DMark, Unigine Superposition, and Catzilla benchmarks. As for the GALAX GeForce RTX 4090 HOF itself, it rocks dual 16-pin PCIe power connectors and when cooled with LN2 cooling, those 20 world records were smashed.

The internal GALAX OC team with overclocker Tobias "Rauf" Bergstrom used a custom BIOS on the GALAX GeForce RTX 4090 HOF alongside LN2 cooling, slaying benchmarks in its path. Given that EVGA has completely pulled out of the graphics card business, there's no other card like this... so GALAX will probably hold these benchmarks for quite some time.
