Samsung's next-gen GDDR7 memory: 36Gbps bandwidth confirmed, uses PAM3 signaling

Anthony Garreffa | Dec 5, 2022 4:39 PM CST

Samsung has just confirmed its next-gen GDDR7 memory technology that will feature up to 25% more power efficiency over its GDDR6 standard and oh-so-much more.

Samsung's next-gen GDDR7 memory: 36Gbps bandwidth confirmed, uses PAM3 signaling

The next-gen Samsung GDDR7 memory will feature PAM3 (Pulse-Amplitude Modulation) signaling, with 25% more efficiency over NRZ (Non-Return to Zero), which is used inside of the current-gen GDDR6 memory standard. Another huge benefit of Samsung's next-gen GDDR7 memory is it will rock bandwidth of up to 36Gbps, which is a huge jump over the 18Gbps (double) that we see inside of current-gen GPUs.

AMD's next-gen RDNA 3-based Radeon RX 7900 series GPUs will use 20Gbps GDDR6 memory, while NVIDIA is still tapping Micron's high-end GDDR6X memory across its previous-gen GeForce RTX 30 series "Ampere" GPUs and current-gen GeForce RTX 40 "Ada Lovelace" GPUs.

SAPPHIRE Radeon RX 7900 series reference GPUs turn up on Amazon

Anthony Garreffa | Dec 4, 2022 7:27 PM CST

AMD's new Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics cards are only a week or so from release -- December 13 to be precise -- but now SAPPHIRE's own Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT reference graphics cards have been spotted on Amazon.

SAPPHIRE Radeon RX 7900 series reference GPUs turn up on Amazon

SAPPHIRE's official Amazon US store has both of the cards listed in reference form, which are no different to AMD's in-house Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT reference graphics cards. Just to note, they are the reference GPUs... not the factory-overclocked, custom models with higher-end, better cooling solutions. But, you do have the standard dual 8-pin PCIe power connectors, versus the 3 x 8-pin PCIe power connectors on SAPPHIRE's higher-end Radeon RX 7900 series solutions.

The two cards spotted on Amazon are: the Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX (21322-01-20G) Gaming Graphics Card with 24GB GDDR6, AMD RDNA 3, as well as the cut-down Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT (21323-01-20G) Gaming Graphics Card with 20GB GDDR6, AMD RDNA 3.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, GeForce GTX 1660 series GPUs reportedly discontinued

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 29, 2022 8:23 PM CST

NVIDIA has reportedly discontinued production of their GeForce RTX 2060, GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER, GeForce GTX 1660, and GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER graphics cards... with plans moving onto the GeForce RTX 30 series GPUs moving forward.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, GeForce GTX 1660 series GPUs reportedly discontinued

If you rewind the clock, the GeForce RTX 2060 and GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER graphics cards are based on the Turing GPU architecture and were released back in 2019. Sure, there have been upgrades in that time, with the GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER released later, as well as being upgraded with the 12GB model in 2021.

However, NVIDIA's older-gen GeForce GTX 1660 and GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER graphics cards are a bit old in the tooth now... lacking features like ray tracing and DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) technologies. AIB partners are currently getting rid of their existing stock of GeForce RTX 2060, GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER, GeForce GTX 1660, and GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER graphics cards, and pumping up the manufacturing of GeForce RTX 30 series GPUs in their replacement.

GIGABYTE confirms both GeForce RTX 4070 Ti and Radeon RX 7900 series GPUs

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 28, 2022 11:33 PM CST

NVIDIA will be unveiling its third Ada Lovelace GPU which will power the upcoming GeForce RTX 4070 Ti graphics card, and now we have GIGABYTE kinda, accidentally leaking out their fleet of GeForce RTX 4070 Ti graphics cards... and not only that but also their family of Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards.

GIGABYTE confirms both GeForce RTX 4070 Ti and Radeon RX 7900 series GPUs

GIGABYTE has submitted a lengthy list of AD103-powered GeForce RTX 4070 Ti graphics cards, and Navi 31-powered Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics cards to the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) regulatory office. As with these listings with the EEC, the company might not release every single model listed, but we can expect many of them to hit the market in the coming months, and more so into 2023.

The upcoming GeForce RTX 4070 Ti is going to effectively be a re-branded GeForce RTX 4080 12GB graphics card, which NVIDIA announced, and then "unlaunched" not so long ago now. As for the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics cards, we already know about those, but GIGABYTE has a huge list of them that are ready to be unleashed in December and more so in January 2023 and beyond.

We can expect custom Radeon RX 7900 series GPUs on launch on December 13

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 28, 2022 6:32 PM CST

AMD will be unleashing its new RDNA 3-powered Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics cards on December 13, with rumors suggesting custom AIB models would be weeks away... but now fresh rumors are squashing that.

We can expect custom Radeon RX 7900 series GPUs on launch on December 13

The new rumors tease that it won't just be AMD's own in-house reference Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics cards, with AIB partners unleashing their custom designs at the same time. ComputerBase is reporting that some board partners -- not all, to be precise -- will have their custom Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards ready to roar on December 13.

This shouldn't be surprising considering SAPPHIRE recently teased their upcoming Radeon RX 7900 series Nitro graphics cards just days ago, as well as both ASUS and PowerColor both also teasing their custom Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards, which are in the ovens, and getting ready to fire up inside of gaming PCs across the planet. Not the bad fire like NVIDIA's controversial GeForce RTX 4090 and its 16-pin "12VHPWR" power connectors, just to be sure.

Sycom's new GeForce RTX 4090, RTX 4080 cards rock AIO cooling, spirit level

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 27, 2022 7:18 PM CST

Sycom has just announced its new GeForce RTX 4090 and GeForce RTX 4080 graphics cards, with some AIO cooling and a built-in spirit level, if that's your thing.

Sycom's new GeForce RTX 4090, RTX 4080 cards rock AIO cooling, spirit level

The Japanese custom PC maker has used a virtually identical cooler to the MANLI Gallardo range of GeForce RTX graphics cards, where it even has the same logo... but with the same cooler, Sycom has used a built-in spirit level and AIO cooler with some Noctua fans attached.

Sycom has replaced the GPU vapor chamber with an in-house AIO liquid cooling kit that is attached to an external radiator, but it doesn't match the style and aesthetics of the graphics card itself, which is kind of disappointing.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 series reference GPUs first, custom Navi 31: 1-2 weeks after

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 23, 2022 8:23 PM CST

AMD will officially unleash its next-gen RDNA 3-powered Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics cards on December 13, but we're hearing some new information on exactly how the launch will play out.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 series reference GPUs first, custom Navi 31: 1-2 weeks after

First, AMD will launch its reference model Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics cards on December 13, but the custom AIB models from partners like ASUS, MSI, SAPPHIRE, and others will launch 1-2 weeks later according to the latest from BoardChannel news.

We've already heard and seen teases from ASUS, PowerColor, and SAPPHIRE for their custom Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards, but it seems that we'll see the custom designs in the weeks after December 13... perfect timing for Christmas.

SAPPHIRE Radeon RX 7900 NITRO teased: new LED-illuminated cooler, more

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 23, 2022 7:22 PM CST

SAPPHIRE has just officially teased its next-gen Radeon RX 7900 series NITRO graphics cards, with a post on Twitter teasing the card and showing off the new design.

SAPPHIRE Radeon RX 7900 NITRO teased: new LED-illuminated cooler, more

Just like with previous AIB partners teasing their custom Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards, SAPPHIRE isn't clear on which model they're showing off here -- the flagship Radeon RX 7900 XTX or the slightly cut-down Radeon RX 7900 XT -- but I would dare expect this is the SAPPHIRE Radeon RX 7900 XTX NITRO graphics card.

SAPPHIRE is rolling out with a redesigned look and new cooler, with a gray shroud that looks like it's flat and rocks three axial fans that are spinning in opposite directions. It's a far cry from the slick design of SAPPHIRE's Radeon RX 6000 series NITRO graphics cards, but we need to get some hands-on and eyes-on with SAPPHIRE's new Radeon RX 7900 series NITRO graphics cards before a final judgment is made on the look and style of the card. From the quick video, I'm digging the style so far.

TSMC's next-gen 3nm wafer cost are high: new CPUs, GPUs will be more expensive

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 22, 2022 6:28 PM CST

TSMC is going to be charging more for its bleeding edge 3nm chips according to a new report from DigiTimes, which suggests the company will be charging $20,000 for 3nm wafers.

TSMC's next-gen 3nm wafer cost are high: new CPUs, GPUs will be more expensive

The current-gen 5nm designs that we're already enjoying with NVIDIA and its new GeForce RTX 40 series "Ada Lovelace" GPUs are made on a custom 5nm design by TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), as well as Apple and soon AMD's new Radeon RX 7000 series "RDNA 3" graphics cards.

Back in 2018, TSMC was charging $10,000 (USD) per 7nm wafer -- which TSMC's 7nm process node made millions of devices sing with silicon magic: Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Ryzen CPUs, Radeon GPUs, and so much more -- but in 2020 when it started pumping out 5nm wafers the costs were jacked up to $16,000 per wafer. But now, TSMC's next-gen 5nm wafers will reportedly cost $20,000 meaning next-gen CPUs and GPUs from AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA will be even more expensive than they are now.
