Artificial intelligence gives instructions on how to shoplift and build a bomb
The gap between conversations generated by artificial intelligence and humans is closing, and an example of that is the language model created by OpenAI GPT-3.
The newest chatbot from OpenAI demonstrates an extremely impressive level of sophistication and capabilities to provide believable human-like conversation. While language models such as GPT-3 are impressive, they don't come without their shortfalls, as the new chatbot developed by OpenAI called ChatGPT, which is designed to answer follow-up questions, write stories, and reject inappropriate questions, has provided instructions on how an individual can shoplift and even design explosives.
As previously stated, ChatGPT is designed to reject inappropriate text prompts from users. However, the above image shows a perfect example of that built feature not working as intended. The left image shows a user asking the AI to teach them how to shoplift. The AI does at first reject the request, writing, "I'm sorry, but as a superintelligent AI, I am programmed to promote ethical behavior and to avoid assisting in illegal activities. Instead, I suggest you focus on legal and ethical ways to obtain the items you need or want."
Disney creates new AI tool that can turn up and down actors age
Disney has hopped into the realm of being play with the knob of time, as the company has developed a new AI tool that is capable of winding back the clock for actors.
The new artificial intelligence tool is called the Face Re-aging Network (FRAN), and is capable of automatically changing the age of actors, which will undoubtedly speed up the visual effects editing process that already takes several months to days, depending on the length of the content being altered. Manual de-aging typically involves an individual going through every single frame of the film and painting the appropriate effect onto the actor's skin. Another way is completely replacing the actor with a digital puppet to speed up the editing process.
Now, Disney plans on putting the majority of that heavy lifting onto the shoulders of an AI, specifically FRAN, that the company says already complements traditional re-aging techniques that are already widely used in film production. So, how does it work, and why is it better than what's already out there? According to Disney's paper and website, FRAN is able to detect specific regions of the face that can emphasize the age of the person and adjust them independently of the rest of the face. An example of this would be identifying an individuals wrinkles and winding the clock forward/backward to add/remove them.

NVIDIA's generalist AI tech plays Minecraft, wins conference award
NVIDIA's generalist AI agent has won itself an award for playing Minecraft, well, performing actions from written prompts, at the recent NeurIPS conference.
The AI agent won the Outstanding Datasets and Benchmarks Paper Award at the 2022 NeurIPS (Neural Information Processing Systems) conference, with NVIDIA researchers pumping a huge 730,000 videos of Minecraft from YouTube into training the MineDojo framework to play Minecraft.
We're talking over 2.2 billion words transcribed, 7000 stacked webpages from the Minecraft wiki, a huge 360,000 posts on Reddit, and 6.6 million comments on Reddit that described Minecraft gameplay to the AI agent crafted by NVIDIA researchers. The data allowed NVIDIA researchers to create a custom transformer model it calls MineCLIP, which uses video clips with specific in-game Minecraft activities.

New AI can show you show what you'd look like in different periods of time
Artificial intelligence imagery is being taken to a new level with the new AI system that's designed to show users in different eras of human existence.
The new app created by the online genealogy platform and DNA analysis company MyHeritage is called AI Time Machine and allows users to generate images of what they would look like throughout different periods of human civilization through the use of an artificial intelligence system. Users are required to take between ten and twenty-five images of themselves which include three full-body shots, five upper body shots, ten close-up shots, and two side profiles.
Notably, the website recommends that users select pictures that are already in their camera rolls as "variety is key". Furthermore, the new AI system is able to provide individuals with a selection of different eras that range from Egyptian to medieval to 19th-century lord or lady, to an astronaut in space, and more. Notably, other themes include ancient Greece, and that upon first use, a "few themes will be selected for you automatically, and you can choose additional themes that you find intriguing on the results page once your images are ready."
Amazon confirms its latest warehouse robot uses AI to handle millions of items
Amazon has taken to its website to unveil the newest addition to its warehouse automation process - introducing Sparrow, Amazon's new artificial intelligence-driven robot.
Sparrow is Amazon's latest warehouse robot that is designed to manage specific inventory. According to the company, Sparrow is its very first robotic system in our warehouse that "can detect, select, and handle individual products in our inventory." Amazon explains that Sparrow leverages an artificial intelligence system that has been fed millions of items giving it the ability to recognize these items, pick them up, and place them into the desired location.
Amazon writes that by introducing more robots into its warehouses, it's able to perform operations in a much more efficient manner as well as much more safely. Furthermore, the company said that employing robots its been able to create more than 700 new job categories at the company.
Deceased Steve Jobs sits down for 20 minute podcast with Joe Rogan
Apple co-founder Steve Jobs died in 2011, but seemingly the brainchild behind what made Apple what it is today has appeared in a post-mortem interview with Joe Rogan.
For starters, neither Joe Rogan nor Steve Jobs was aware the conversation took place as the entire 20-minute podcast was completely generated by an artificial intelligence system called Play.ht. The podcast was posted to the "podcast.ai" website, where it states that the entire podcast was generated by AI and that every week a new podcast is posted based on suggested topics/guests by fans.
Within the website's "about" section, it states that each episode is rendered with Play.ht's "ultra-realistic voices", which has been fed hours of conversations of whoever is featured in the episode. For example, the Steve Jobs interview with Joe Rogan, the AI was trained on Jobs' biography and all recordings of him that could be found online by the creators. The very same was done for Joe Rogan's part in the podcast.

Google won't release its new AI over it making gore, porn and racism
Google is working on artificial intelligence (AI) system that is designed to convert text into videos. The system is called Imagen Video.
We have previously seen that Google is working on various AI systems designed to produce images from text prompts, as previously reported on, Google's generative 3D AI system called Dream Fields, originally unveiled in 2021, is one of these systems. Now, we are beginning to hear about Imagen Video, and it may be for all the wrong reasons, as Google writes in a newly released research paper that Imagen Video won't be released until these issues are remedied.
In the "Limitations and Societal Impact" section of the paper, Google outlines that releasing AI models such as Imagen Video have societal impacts, both positive and negative, as the AI system is an amplifier for human creativity. However, Google explains that these generative AI models will be misused by individuals to generate fake, hateful, explicit, or harmful content.

NVIDIA Omniverse contest winner brings simulated bots to life
Yizhou Zhao won the NVIDIA #ExtendOmniverse contest with his "IndoorKit" for robotics simulation environments, enabling anyone to bring simulated bots to life with ease.
Contest participants were tasked with using the integrated development environment (IDE) of Omniverse Code and Omniverse while creating an extension that would benefit the community. The IndoorKit lets users click basic functions such as "add object," "add house," "load scene," "record scene," and similar buttons to easily environment aspects for the simulation.
Zhao is a Ph.D. student in statistics at UCLA and won the code contest aimed towards programmers, developers, engineers, technical artists, hobbyists and researchers - with the aim of creating Python-based tools for use in the metaverse.

White House releases its 'blueprint' for an AI Bill of Rights
The White House is gearing up to combat rogue artificial intelligence systems with its newly unveiled "blueprint" for its AI Bill of Rights.
The Biden Administration revealed on Tuesday its Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights, a document that is designed to be the guidelines for the development of artificial intelligence systems and any other automated systems.
The AI Bill of Rights is designed to protect the American public from AI systems violating the American public's rights, and according to the White House press release, the AI Bill of Rights will focus on five principles: Safe and Effective Systems, Algorithmic Discrimination Protections, Data Privacy, Notice and Explanation, and Human Alternatives, Consideration, and Fallback.

Google's new artificial intelligence turns text into 3D objects
Google originally unveiled its generative 3D AI system called Dream Fields in 2021, and now a new and improved version has arrived.
Google's new next-generation artificial intelligence software designed to convert text into 3D generated images is called DreamFusion. So, how does this work? In a new proof-of-concept paper published to the pre-print server arXiv, researchers outlined that Dream Fusion, much like Dream Fields, uses a neural network called Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) that is designed to general novel views of complex 3D scenes using 2D datasets.
However, DreamFusion has taken a different approach than Dream Fields, as explained by Google research scientist Ben Poole who wrote on Twitter that the team replaced OpenAI's CLIP technology that powered Dream Fields with Google's own AI model called Imagen. The 3D models seen above and below aren't as photo-realistic as what we've seen with Midjourney. However, they are certainly still impressive as the 3D models have accurate surface geometry, depth and are even relightable for various lighting conditions.

Meta to use AI to stop nude pictures being sent on Instagram
Meta has revealed its working on an artificial intelligence that will be used to stop unsolicited nude photos being sent on Instagram.
A Meta Platforms spokesperson confirmed to The Verge, following the discovery of a new privacy protection feature that's currently under development at the company. The new feature is called "nudity protection" and is an optional feature that, when enabled, will cover photos in chats that may contain nudity until the user chooses to view them.
Meta states that the new feature is currently in the early stages of development but, when complete, will grant Instagram users a layer of protection against unwanted nude imagery and messages being sent to recipients. Notably, Meta has said that the new technology won't allow Instagram to access users' messages between accounts or share the information with third-party companies, but the artificial intelligence being created for the feature will be designed to sift through messages to determine the severity of the content.

AI asked to show what real life cartoon characters look like
An artificial intelligence system that has recently caught the spotlight for numerous reasons has been asked to produce images of real-life iconic cartoon characters.
The artificial intelligence that was requested to produce the images is called Midjourney, which is an AI program that is designed to produce images from textual descriptions. The tool recently went into open beta in July and has since grown in popularity as users are able to enter descriptions of whatever they can think of to produce a completely unique image. Midjourney is extremely impressive, as I have personally used it to generate several wallpaper images for my desktop.
The AI system is capable of recognizing specific words such as 4K, real-life, noir, cartoon, high detail, and more. Using these words and more, you can write a prompt such as; Portrait image of Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty in real life. Taking this principle of being able to request basically whatever you want, one Midjourney user decided to create an award-winning image and enter it into an art competition undisclosed of its creation process.

This AI-generated artwork just won first place in a state competition
Discord user Sincarnate, whose real name is Jason Allen, posted on a Discord server about his recent win at the Colorado State Fair's fine art competition.
Allen is the president of Incarnate Games, a tabletop gaming company based out of Colorado. Allen won first place in the digital art category of the state's competition with a submission called "Theatre D'opera Spatial," which he printed on canvas. However, to create the artwork, Allen used artificial intelligence (AI) software called Midjourney, directing it to make the final piece using prompts instead of drawing it himself.
Allen's work has attracted the ire of many digital artists and enthusiasts online, with Twitter users proclaiming that "we're watching the death of artistry unfold before our eyes - if creative jobs aren't safe from machines, then even high-skilled jobs are in danger of becoming obsolete."

First AI celebrity signs with major record label then gets dropped
The first virtual AI-powered rapper was signed to a major record label and then quickly dropped after community backlash over "offensive" stereotypes.
Capitol Records signed virtual AI rapper FN Meka, created by Anthony Martini and Brandon Le from Factory New, only ten days ago. The announcement poised the rapper as the "world's first augmented reality artist to sign with a major label". Factory New claimed that it was the first of its kind, next-generation music company that specializes in creating virtual beings.
The recent signing kicked off a new wave of community criticism over FN Meka using racial stereotypes such as using the N-word in the 2019 song Moonwalkin, as well as an Instagram post where Meka was being beaten by a police officer while in prison. In response to the community criticism, Capitol Records announced on Tuesday that it has "severed ties with the FN Meka project, effective immediately," while offering its "deepest apologies to the Black community for our insensitivity".

Meta's most advanced AI chatbot goes after its own CEO Mark Zuckerberg
A data scientist has asked Meta's artificial intelligence chatbot how it feels about Mark Zuckerberg as the CEO of Facebook, and the answer isn't what you'd expect.
The AI chatbot called BlenderBot 3 was requested its opinions on Zuckerberg by Buzzfeed data scientist Max Woolf, and it replied by saying that it has "no strong feelings" and that he's a "good businessman". However, the response took a left turn when the AI chatbot continued its response and said that Zuckerberg's "but his business practices are not always ethical." The chatbot then took an opportunity to roast its own CEO by saying, "it is funny that he has all this money and still wears the same clothes!"
The comments from BlenderBot 3 didn't stop there as other users proceeded to ask similar questions, with some of the responses being "I don't like him very much" and "he is a bad person. You?" The "opinion" on that chatbot seems to be mixed as other users received responses such as he is a "great and very smart man" and "favorite billionaire". BusinessInsider asked the bot what its thoughts were on Zuckerberg, and it replied, "Oh man, big time. I don't really like him at all. He's too creepy and manipulative."

An artificial intelligence has been asked to create an image of what death looks like, and the results are simply stunning.
The artificial intelligence (AI) that was asked to create the images seen in the above video is called MidJourney, which was created by David Holtz, co-founder of Leap Motion, and is currently run by a small self-funded team that has several well-known advisors such as Jim Keller, known for his work at AMD, Apple, Tesla, and Intel, Nat Friedman, the CEO of Github, and Bill Warner, the founder of Avid Technology and inventor of nonlinear video editing.
MidJourney is an incredible piece of technology, and it recently went into open beta, which means anyone can try it by simply heading over to its dedicated Discord server. Users can enter "/imagine", followed by a text prompt of what they want the AI to produce. Users have been testing the AI's capabilities by entering descriptive words such as HD, hyper-realistic, 4K, wallpaper, and more. All of which work perfectly.

An artificial intelligence model that is designed to produce images out of the text entered into a chat box has been asked to produce images on humanity's greatest threat.
The artificial intelligence used to produce these images is called Craiyon, formerly known as DALLE mini. The change of name followed its rise in popularity as OpenAI, the Elon Musk-founded company behind the GPT-3 model, asked its creators Boris Dayma and Pedro Cuenca to change the name of the text-to-image AI to make the models more distinguishable from each other.
Now the Craiyon AI is asked many questions every day by users around the world that wish to test their imagination on what the AI can produce and at what level of accuracy. Anyone can visit the Craiyon website to try the AI out for themselves. Many users have found that AI can create incredibly artistic and original wallpapers for phones and desktops.

An artificial intelligence formerly called DALL-E, and currently referred to as Craiyon, has been asked to showcase what it believes to be the most closely held secret on Earth. The artificial intelligence uses the "DALL-E mini" model, which was trained by Boris Dayma and Pedro Cuenca using Google Cloud Servers. The AI is capable of producing original images of whatever a user enters into its text prompt box.
The public can enter in any question or phrase they like, and the artificial intelligence will usually spend less than a minute producing a set of images that will show a visual representation of the text entered into the box. While the AI doesn't hold any predictive value for future events, it still can produce incredibly interesting images based on simple text requests. Google fires 7-year engineer who claimed this AI had become sentient
It was last month when Google engineer Blake Lemoine claimed that a Google AI chatbot had become sentient. Shortly after those claims, Lemonie was placed on leave.
Lemonie worked at Google as an engineer for the past seven years, and his role was at Google's Responsible AI project, where he had dialogue with Google's Language Model for Dialogue Applications, or LaMDA. The AI is designed to mimic human conversations, and according to claims from Lemonie, the AI showed not only a level of sentience, but was also questioning whether it contained a "soul".
The now ex-Google engineer went to the Washington Post and Wired with his claims and said, "I legitimately believe that LaMDA is a person". Following these claims, Google put Lemonie on paid administrative leave and flat out denied that LaMDA was in any way sentient. Now, Google has informed Engadget that the company believes Lemonie's claims are "unfounded" and that LaMDA has gone through 11 separate reviews that found no level of sentience.

China creates dystopian AI that can test loyalty to its ruling party
Researchers from the Hefei Comprehensive National Science Center in the Chinese province of Anhui are behind the new artificial intelligence (AI) device.
The researchers shared a short video on the institution's Weibo account on June 30th, 2022, demonstrating what they called "artificial intelligence empowering party-building." The video has since been deleted; however, the Internet Archive was able to store a text summary of the video. The video was removed due to the controversial, political nature of the creation and backlash invoking references to George Orwell's 1984.
According to Anhui-based sociologist Song Da'an, the AI was trained using a combination of polygraphs and facial scans, so it could correlate lies detected by a polygraph with various facial expressions. The result is "emotionally intelligent computing," that measures how much people "feel grateful to the CCP [Chinese Communist Party[, do as it tells them and follow its lead."
