Facebook's version of ChatGPT leaks online, now being trained by 4Chan users
Meta, the owner of Facebook, has developed a powerful language model that's its answer to OpenAI's insanely popular ChatGPT.
OpenAI's ChatGPT has paved the way for the popularity of artificial intelligence-powered systems, demonstrating the immense power of language models trained on varying amounts of datasets, each containing gigabytes of data. Following the public release of ChatGPT were announcements from other companies joining the AI race, Google revealed more details about its various AI-projects, while Microsoft rolled out Bing Chat, an AI-powered search engine tool.
Now Meta has thrown its hat into the ring with a new announcement about a language model called LLamA. While Meta's language model isn't publicly available, but users can request access to the download file. According to Meta, the intention behind a semi-public rollout is "further democratizing access" to the AI, which enables developers to identify problems within the AI. Essentially, Meta is soft-rolling out the language model to the AI community so users can troubleshoot it.
Discord goes all-in on AI, will use OpenAI to upgrade Clyde chatbot and AutoMod
AI's influence continues to grow as Discord, the leading gaming chat app, embraces artificial intelligence to boost its operations.
Discord today announced plans to integrate OpenAI into multiple parts of the popular app. There's three main areas that will be affected by AI: the Clyde chatbot, AutoMod functionality, and new conversation summaries.
The most impactful addition could be Clyde's new AI upgrade. Following the popularity of ChatGPT and the Bing AI assistant, Discord's Clyde will be the AI nexus that oversees various functions of the chat app. Users will be able to chat directly to Clyde, ask the robot questions, and share GIFs and memes and the like.
Fed up with the ChatGPT-powered Bing already? DuckDuckGo now has an AI assistant
DuckDuckGo, a search engine focused on maintaining user privacy, has revealed a new AI feature called DuckAssist that has just entered beta testing.
Right off the bat, we should clarify that this isn't a full-on chatbot like Microsoft's Bing AI which we've been hearing so much about lately, but rather an assistant that pops up to field some search queries.
As the company explains, DuckAssist is essentially a new form of 'Instant Answer' (in beta) that surfaces an immediate response to a question, if that query can be answered by Wikipedia. (Other sources will be used, such as Britannica, but it's mostly Wikipedia to start with, partly due to the regularity of its updates).

The development of artificial intelligence is exponential, and the release of products or tools, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Microsoft's Bing Chat, is just the beginning of the newly emerging space.
The widespread popularity of OpenAI's ChatGPT and the half-baked release of Microsoft's Bing Chat, which uses an upgraded version of the underlying technology of ChatGPT, has put a large spotlight on the development of artificial intelligence, causing some individuals and corporations to express their concerns and excitement surrounding the new technology.
Now, a new op-ed penned in the Los Angeles Times by philosophy expert Eric Schwitzgebel and "nonhuman" intelligence researcher Henry Shevlin, explores the future of AI from an ethical and moral standpoint. Both experts write that only a couple of years ago, the idea of an artificial intelligence system becoming "conscious" and capable of a subjective experience seemed like science fiction, but with the leaps and bounds in development we have seen in recent months with ChatGPT/BingChat, it's much more plausible that these systems could eventually "exhibit something like consciousness".

It was recently discovered that Microsoft's AI-powered Bing Chat has what it calls a "celebrity" mode that allows it to impersonate famous public figures.
Microsoft's Bing Chat has been a center point for attention since the widespread popularity of OpenAI's ChatGPT. However, Bing Chat seemingly has more concerns, or at least it's early iteration gave more reasons to be concerned. Before Microsoft "lobotomized" Bing Chat, the AI chatbot could bypass some of its own operating parameters, giving users strange responses that sometimes even led to threats.
Microsoft saw these responses and issued a statement saying they don't align with the company's values and that Bing Chat has new limitations that should prevent these responses from occurring. These limitations are still in place and restrict users to only sending six messages to Bing Chat before the conversation terminates. According to Microsoft, Bing Chat only began providing strange responses to users when they communicated with it extensively, hence the message limitation.

Microsoft's Bing Chat has a secret 'celebrity' mode to impersonate famous people
Microsoft's Bing Chat tool powered by artificial intelligence is being poked and prodded by users, and as time goes on, more features are being discovered, leading to new possibilities for the emerging technology.
Microsoft's Bing Chat certainly had a rocky start when it first launched as the AI-powered search assistant began to lose its mind if a user interacted with it for too long. In some instances, Bing Chat actually turned on the user, threatening revenge on a suspected hack, requesting the user to stop communicating with it, and even threatening to carry out the release of personal information on the user in order to ruin their reputation and chances of new job prospects.
All of these examples and more of Bing Chat going off the rails were heard by Microsoft, which "lobotomized" the artificial intelligence and rolled out new operating parameters. Following the update, users are now only able to send six messages to Bing Chat before the chat needs to be refreshed, as Microsoft identified that most of these "off the rails" responses happened after multiple messages were sent. Despite Microsoft turning down Bing Chat's intelligence, users are still finding impressive/concerning new features within the software.

Researchers use Stable Diffusion AI to translate brain waves into images
The power of AI in image generation is undeniable, and we've seen some remarkable strides in this space in recent months - with Stable Diffusion being one of the leaders. That said, the latest revelation sounds pretty incredible, as it could lead to a situation where AI can reconstruct accurate images based on your memories. It sounds like something from Cyberpunk 2077, except real.
A new research paper from Yu Takagi and Shinji Nishimoto, from the Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences at Osaka University, outlines how it's possible to reconstruct high-resolution and accurate images from reading brain activity gained from fMRI signals "without the need for any additional training and fine-tuning of complex deep-learning models."
You can see some examples of image reconstruction above, with the presented images in the top row and the reconstructed images from brain waves in the bottom row. There's a definite dreamlike quality to the results, which is fascinating.
Elon Musk warns of 'dangerous technology' that he may have accelerated
The emergence of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence in its various forms, has shaken up many industries around the world and has prominent figures in the tech world worried about its overall potential.
One of those prominent figures is SpaceX, Tesla, and Twitter CEO Elon Musk, who has recently been taking to his personal Twitter account to discuss the potential of AI-powered systems, while also poking fun at the people that were riding the cryptocurrency hype train that has now jumped over to the AI hype train.
Musk tweeted out that he's been recently experiencing "existential angst" about AI development, which eventually led to a series of other tweets where the Tesla CEO explained that OpenAI, the company behind the now widely popular ChatGPT, has changed it direction since Musk founded it in 2015. According to Musk, OpenAI was formed to bring transparency to AI in the form of being "open source", hence Musk's decision to name the company 'OpenAI'.

AI-powered fighter pilot beats humans in real dogfight for the first time ever
Air combat will eventually become artificial intelligence-powered systems battling each other, or at least that's what a group of researchers has predicted.
A new report published in The South China Morning Post details a study that was recently published in the Chinese journal Acta Aeronautica et Astronautica Sinica. The study was conducted by professor Huang Juntao from the Chinese army's Aerodynamics Research and Development Center located in Sichuan, China, and explores the implementation of artificial intelligence-powered systems in a real-life dogfight situation.
The AI system competed against human fighter pilots and won the entire contest in just 90 seconds, beating every human fighter pilot it encountered. The researchers write in their study that the AI consistently out-predicted the development of the battle through its superior calculation agility, leading it to establish a distinct advantage over its opponents. The results from this study caused the researchers behind it to predict that the era of air combat will soon transfer over from humans to AI systems, and that the time of that transition is already on the horizon.
Microsoft Edge VSR is another Video Super Resolution tool for upscaling videos
NVIDIA recently launched the RTX Video Super Resolution update as part of its latest GeForce Game Ready driver update. In Chrome and Edge, GeForce RTX 30 and 40 Series users could enable the AI-powered upscaling tool to improve video quality when streaming at a lower resolution.
Today comes news that Microsoft is adding its version of VSR (Video Super Resolution) to its Edge browser, with support for all NVIDIA GeForce RTX model GPUs (GeForce RTX 20, 30, and 40 Series with Tensor Cores) in addition to AMD Radeon RX graphics covering Radeon RX 5700 up to Radeon RX 7800. Though we assume that's a typo, it's supposed to be Radeon RX 7900.
Like RTX VSR, Microsoft's VSR is said to remove or improve compression artifacts and enhance text though it only works if the video's resolution is lower than 720p. If you're wondering why it's limited to low-res videos, Microsoft notes that one of three videos is played at 480p or lower in Edge browsers. AI also powers Microsoft's VSR with machine learning to enhance any video watched in the browser.
Elon Musk eyes creating his own version of OpenAI's ChatGPT
Elon Musk has indicated that he's interested in creating his own version of OpenAI's ChatGPT in order to rival the popular AI chatbot.
A new report from The Information goes into detail about AI researchers being contacted by Musk's team to develop a new version of OpenAI's ChatGPT. According to the report, Musk's team has already reached out to several developers regarding the purported project, and one of those researchers was Igor Babuschkin, a former senior AI researcher at Google's Deepmind, who was contacted for the position of lead developer on Musk's vision for the AI.
Details of Musk's new AI chatbot are scarce and hardly set in stone, but we can expect that it will be different from OpenAI's ChatGPT in certain aspects. Notably, Musk co-founded OpenAI back in 2015 but left the company in 2018. Since then, Musk has been quite vocal about how he believes the company has changed direction from its initial heading and why the company was created in the first place.

An AI chip can play play Doom using just one milliwatt of power
id Software's Doom from 1993 is an iconic release; arguably, it helped create and foster a brand-new game genre in the form of the first-person shooter. I know, Wolfenstein 3D came out first, and for many, that was the game that introduced them to the FPS, but Doom was a monster hit that spawned so many first-person shooters that instead of FPS, we called them "Doom clones."
The iconic status of the game is one of the reasons why it's become something of a meme to get the game running on hardware ranging from a calculator to a smart fridge and more. Syntiant's NDP200 (Neural Decision Processor) is an ultra-low power chip for AI with 26 GPIO pins and up to 100MHz speeds. And with that, its neural network was trained using VizDoom (a custom version of the game built for AI research) for a reasonably standard shooting sequence in the Doom style.
And it does so by drawing just 1 Milliwatt of power. That's 1/1000 of a Watt. This makes the GeForce RTX 4080's 320W over 300,000 times more power than what we see here, and that's pretty remarkable. Check it out in the video below.

Mark Zuckerberg jumps on the AI bandwagon with new Meta announcement
A new member of the technology elite has announced a pivot into the artificial intelligence race, with Mark Zuckerberg taking to Facebook yesterday to announce a new direction for Meta.
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, Facebook's parent company, took to his personal Facebook account to announce that Meta is forming a new top-level production group that will be dedicated to working on generative AI. Zuckerberg explains that this group will consist of smaller teams that are currently working on artificial intelligence in various parts of the company and that this new large team will first begin with creating "delightful experiences" with this new technology across all of Meta's products.
Additionally, Zuckerberg says that in the long-term, Meta will be focusing on developing AI "personas" that can assist people in a variety of waves. The Meta CEO says the company is already testing AI-infused tools such as chats - similar to what users see in apps such as Messenger and WhatsApp, but with an AI - as well as images (creative Instagram filters and ad formats) and video.

AI produces 'cursed' results when asked for simple art ideas
The emergence of artificial intelligence has many people worried about their job security, while others are simply enjoying the new publicly available technology by testing its limitations.
It seems that ChatGPT users have found a so-called limitation of the underlying language model powering the artificial intelligence chatbot, as videos have been posted to TikTok showcasing users following the chatbot's instructions on how to create a crochet pattern. Alexander Woolner took to TikTok in January and explained that she asked ChatGPT for a crochet pattern of a narwhal as well as a set of instructions.
The chatbot provided Woolner, who has been knitting for years and crocheting since 2019, with a new narwhal pattern and instructions that featured abbreviations and punctuation marks such as "ch" standing for "chain" and an asterisk (*) representing the action should be repeated.

Former Google engineer sounds alarm on a new AI gaining sentience
In a new essay penned in Newsweek, Blake Lemonie, the former Google engineer that claimed Google's Large Language Model (LLM), the Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA), is sentient, has dropped warning for Microsoft's Bing Chat.
For those unfamiliar with Lemonie's past, the former Google engineer made headlines last June when he claimed that Google's LaMDA chatbot had gained an unintended level of sentience. Lemonine proceeded to do media rounds discussing why he believed that LaMDA was sentient and how it was even possible. Now, the former Google engineer has taken to Newsweek to pen an essay that looks at Bing Chat, Microsoft's new artificial intelligence tool infused in its Bing search engine, powered by the Microsoft Edge browser.
Notably, Bing Chat's AI uses an upgraded version of OpenAI's ChatGPT language model, the underpinning technology running the chatbot. In the essay, Lemonie states that he hasn't had the chance to run experiments himself but has seen what Bing Chat produced prior to Microsoft "lobotomizing" the AI after it began spewing various responses that the company didn't align with or even know the AI was capable of producing.

Experts warn artificial intelligence could cause all-out nuclear war
A group of experts have been surveyed and asked their thoughts about the risks of artificial intelligence and how it could impact the world as a whole.
Researchers from New York University and other schools have gone out and asked various professionals for their opinions on some of the most heated questions regarding artificial intelligence and its development. The professionals were academic individuals and people that worked in the field of Natural Language Processing, which is the application of computational techniques to the analysis and synthesis of natural language and speech.
The survey included questions about the risk of artificial general intelligence (AGI), how AI can impact businesses, and various ethical concerns. Notably, the survey required respondents to either agree or disagree with the proposed risks. The survey, which consisted of 480 respondents, indicated that 73% agreed that AI automation could soon lead to a "revolutionary societal change" within the next 100 years, and it would be on a scale that would, at the very least, be comparable to that of the Industrial Revolution.

US sparks fear of assassinations with new AI-powered facial recognition tech
The U.S. military has combined artificial intelligence with robotics, sensors, and facial recognition technology. The result? Concerning drone capabilities.
The United States Air Force has developed facial recognition technology for drones, enabling drones to identify individuals and carry out missions in their various forms. The technology was birthed out of a contract between the Department of Defense and RealNetworks, which states the new drone technology is intended for intelligence gathering by special operations teams.
The contract is worth approximately $800,000, and according to reports, RealNetworks won the contract to implement its Secure Accurate Facial Recognition (SAFR) technology into U.S. Air Force drones. Additionally, the upgrade in software allows for the drones to be flown autonomously with minimal human intervention. Facial recognition technology being added to drones is not a new thing, as the U.N. claimed that Libyan troops had equipped their drones with facial recognition technology and weapons in 2021.
Spotify launches new feature that puts artificial intelligence in your pocket
A new report has revealed Spotify is currently preparing to revolutionize the music streaming industry with the inclusion of a DJ that's powered by artificial intelligence.
TechCrunch has reported that Spotify has unveiled a new feature that is designed to learn as much as it can about the user so it can then provide the best music recommendations. This feature is called "DJ" and is separate from radio DJ, which will likely be discontinued once DJ is widely adopted. So, what is DJ? The concept is quite simple. The feature will give users a curated selection of music, and between tracks, an AI voice will provide commentary on the artists being listened to.
As users continue to engage with DJ, the underlying artificial intelligence will learn more about what type of music the user wants to listen to, and with that knowledge, it will create a personalized listening experience. Spotify's goal behind the implementation of this software is to expand Spotify's uses, which are typically centered around custom playlists and interacting with the app to find a desired song. By rolling out an AI assistant that learns its users' taste, Spotify could be turned into an app that is continuously playing a stream of personalized music, removing the need for the user to search for new music manually.
Microsoft 'neutered' Bing Chat after its AI threatened to carry out revenge
The initial public release of Microsoft's Bing Chat integrated into the Edge browser caused a wave of concern as the AI-powered chatbot seemingly went off the rails after too many messages.
Bing Chat is powered by an upgraded version of the technology underpinning OpenAI's extremely popular ChatGPT. However, Bing Chat is separate from ChatGPT as it's integrated into the Microsoft Edge browser, enabling users to search the internet traditionally while also being able to ask an artificial intelligence chatbot to generate what Microsoft intends to be a faster, more thorough answer.
However, the small public release of Bing Chat didn't go as planned, and it was quickly discovered that the more messages users sent to Bing Chat, the more the AI's answers became deranged. In one instance of a user interacting with Bing Chat, the AI chatbot began insulting the user, gaslighting them, and even threatened to carry out revenge by exposing their personal information, which would ruin their reputation. Another user found that after a lengthy conversation with Bing Chat, it decided that the user was its "enemy" and requested that they stop talking to it.
