A new analysis claims Sony's PlayStation 6 could deliver up to 80 TFLOPS of FP32 performance, potentially exceeding NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 5080, but the numbers behind the claim don't appear to add up.

GameGPU based its analysis on previously leaked PS6 specifications, including an AMD RDNA 5-based GPU with 54 physical Compute Units (CU), a 160-bit GDDR7 memory interface and a reported 160W power target. Earlier leaks suggested approximately 52 CUs would be active, with GPU clocks between 2.6GHz and 3.0GHz and theoretical FP32 performance of around 34-40 TFLOPS.

GameGPU argues that RDNA 5's improved Dual Issue capabilities could effectively double that figure to 68-80 TFLOPS, placing PS6 above the RTX 5080's 56.3 TFLOPS, and essentially making the GPU within the PS6, on paper, more powerful than an approximately $1,600 - $1,700 discrete graphics card.

However, the original 34-40 TFLOPS estimate already appears to account for doubled FP32 execution. Using 52 CUs, 64 lanes per CU, two operations per FMA and dual FP32 throughput produces approximately 34.6 TFLOPS at 2.6GHz and 39.9 TFLOPS at 3.0GHz.

Doubling the 34 - 40 TFLOPS figure again therefore appears to count Dual Issue twice, which is likely where GameGPU's 68 - 80 TFLOPS estimate goes wrong. Its other projections, including PS6 being 70 - 100% faster than the RX 9070 XT in path tracing and gaining another 35 - 50% through PSSR 3, are just that, estimates, and not a leak.
