Kosta Andreadis | Gaming | Sep 25, 2024 1:04 AM CDT

Over 600 PC games and apps support RTX technologies like DLSS, Frame Generation, and Reflex. DLSS comes to dark fantasy shooter Witchfire, RPG GreedFall II, and more

The highly-anticipated dark fantasy shooter Witchfire, previously available via the Epic Games Store, is making its way to Steam this week with support for DLSS 3 Frame Generation. The game sports impressive visuals and is the next game from the studio behind the acclaimed The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.

The guns and magic setting remind us of the classic Hexen but with the visual fidelity of a modern AAA shooter like DOOM Eternal. This is another Early Access game, with the developers offering three regions to explore, a complete gameplay loop, and access to a range of guns and spells.

Sony officially unveils Ghost of Tsushima sequel and it features a female protagonist

Sony has just wrapped up its State of Play event, where it unveiled many new titles ahead of the launch of its recently announced PlayStation 5 Pro. What is likely the most impressive announcement of the entire event with the surprise unveiling of a standalone Ghost of Tsushima sequel from developers Sucker Punch, which is officially called "Ghost of Yotei". The new title is set 300 years before the events of Tsushima and is a true sequel to the popular game.

Players will be taking on the role of a new female character protagonist called Atsu, who is hunting something in the surrounding area of Mount Yotei. However, there appears to be a price on the head of the main character as Ronin is aware of her presence and is hunting her. Notably, the protagonist uses two swords and a gun. Unfortunately, there aren't many more details on the upcoming game, other than Ghost of Yotei is Sucker Punch's first game built from the ground up for PlayStation 5 -- Ghost of Tsushima was built for the PlayStation 4.

Ubisoft pulls out of Tokyo Game Show after mounting Assassin's Creed Shadows controversy

Ubisoft has officially withdrawn from the Tokyo Game Show following criticisms of its upcoming title, Assassin's Creed Shadows, with the developer citing "various circumstances".

Ubisoft pulls out of Tokyo Game Show after mounting Assassin's Creed Shadows controversy

A new report from Insider Gaming cites various sources that informed the publication that Ubisoft canceled all press previews of Assassin's Creed Shadows. These press previews of the title were expected to go out next week along with the embargo date, but now, according to Insider Gaming, that isn't happening. Ubisoft has since touched on the seemingly abrupt pull out of the Tokyo Game Show in a recent X post, writing, "We regret to inform you that due to various circumstances, we have decided to cancel our online participation in Tokyo Game Show 2024, which was scheduled to start at 3:00 PM on September 26."

Why would Ubisoft withdraw from the Tokyo Game Show? Since the announcement of Assassin's Creed Shadows, the title has drawn extreme controversy for its price, lack of showcased gameplay despite pre-orders being open, choppy animations, alleged bot purchasing, characters, and setting. That last point was a particular point of contention as gamers accused Ubisoft of mischaracterizing Japanese culture with its choice of protagonist and the company's exclamation that Shadows was loosely based on history.

Gran Turismo 7 will feature 'experimental support' for 8K 60FPS on the PS5 Pro

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 24, 2024 7:53 PM CDT

Gran Turismo developer Polyphony Digital has some exciting news, announcing that Gran Turismo 7 will have "experimental support" for 8K 60FPS on the new PS5 Pro console. Yeah... 8K 60FPS!

Gran Turismo 7 will feature 'experimental support' for 8K 60FPS on the PS5 Pro

I discovered the news just now digging through Sony's content unleashed at its State of Play event for the PlayStation 5 Pro as I'm genuinely curious myself, and then I noticed the top comment on Sony's blog covering 'developers share how they're using new tech to enhance their games" on the PS5 Pro. It's a fantastic article with a bunch of great developers giving some insights into what to expect from the wave of PS5 Pro Enhanced games.

Shuichi Takano, Main Programmer at Polyphony Digital said: "While Gran Turismo 7 was already able to render in native 4K, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution on PS5 Pro is also effective on 4K sources, allowing for even more detail and higher image quality than ever before. Additionally, we are now able to support ray tracing during races, which was previously impossible. This allows not only for car surfaces to show full reflections of other cars, but also for a car to reflect its own parts, greatly enhancing realism and immersion throughout the whole game".

AMD's next-gen Ryzen Z2 Extreme APU spotted: 8-core CPU, beefed-up RDNA 3.5 GPU

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Sep 24, 2024 3:23 PM CDT

AMD is cooking its new Ryzen Z2 Extreme APU ready for next-gen 2025 gaming handhelds, powered by the Zen 5 CPU architecture and RDNA 3.5 GPU architecture, just like its recently launched Strix Point APUs.

AMD's next-gen Ryzen Z2 Extreme APU spotted: 8-core CPU, beefed-up RDNA 3.5 GPU

AMD's new Ryzen Z2 Extreme APU will succeed the current-gen Zen 4-based Ryzen Z1 Extreme and Ryzen Z1 (non-Extreme) which we see in the ASUS ROG Ally gaming handheld. But the new Ryzen Z2 Extreme should power the next-gen gaming handhelds of 2025, which we should see debut at CES 2025 (like, a new ROG Ally successor).

The new Z2 Extreme APU has been confirmed in a recent NBD shipping manifest, with the chip revealed as the Z2X28W" with a "100-000001684" ID. Z2X is the codename for the Z2 Extreme wth a 28W TDP for the APU, with this confirming the rumors of the new Z2 Extreme APU working within the 9W to 30W range of TDP, except that it looks like the max TDP will be 28W.

Obviously enough, it uses AI to generate a playlist based on your request, and the feature was previously made available in the UK and Australia some time ago (nearly half a year back, in fact).

The AI Playlist is now available to users in the US and Canada, as well as Ireland and New Zealand, on mobile devices (Android and iOS).

The company released the standard Adol 14 laptop in July, with the newer Adol 14 powered by AMD's new Strix Point APU, compared to the Ryzen 8000 series "Hawk Point" APU in its predecessor. The new edition laptop will smit a nice-smelling fragrance, which... well... I don't know, make you feel better I guess.

AMD's new Ryzen AI 9 365 "Strix Point" APU features 10 cores and 20 threads of Zen 5 processing power (split between 4 x Zen 5 + 6 x Zen 5c cores) with the knocked-down Radeon 880M GPU (but still on the RDNA 3.5 GPU architecture, just less compute units).

Steam hits its new highest-ever record for concurrent users: 38.3 million is the new record

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 24, 2024 8:21 AM CDT

Valve is celebrating once again with a new concurrent players record broken on Steam -- reaching a new highest-ever record of 38.3 million gamers on Steam at once -- well, 38,348,144 to be exact.

Steam hits its new highest-ever record for concurrent users: 38.3 million is the new record

It was only last month that Steam hit a record at the time of 37.2 million concurrent players, but in the last 36 hours that record has been broken with another 500,000+ players on the platform at once. Steam has been continuously growing this year, but this is the first time -- ever -- that Steam is clocking in close to 30 million players at all times.

Black Myth: Wukong has driven a huge chunk of this growth, with the game racking up around 2.3 million concurrent players at launch, with up to around 500,000+ concurrent players at peak, and over 100,000+ concurrent players on average. Counter-Strike 2 still tops the list, followed by Dota 2, Banana, and then PUBG.

Intel Razer Lake-S CPU teased after Nova Lake-S, which just replaced Arrow Lake-S Refresh

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Sep 23, 2024 7:07 PM CDT

Intel is weeks away from launching its new Core Ultra 200 series "Arrow Lake-S" processors, with recent rumors suggesting the Arrow Lake Refresh has been nixed and that Nova Lake will succeed Arrow Lake... and now on top of that, rumor has it that Razer Lake-S will succeed Nova Lake-S in 2026+.

Intel Razer Lake-S CPU teased after Nova Lake-S, which just replaced Arrow Lake-S Refresh

It looks like Intel's upcoming Core Ultra 200 series "Arrow Lake-S" desktop processors will be on the market much longer than expected, with the Arrow Lake-S Refresh canceled, it's all-systems-go into Nova Lake, and then into the arms of Razer Lake-S.

LGA 1700 has been used for Alder Lake-S, Raptor Lake-S, and the Raptor Lake-S Refresh CPUs but Intel will debut its new LGA 1851 socket with Arrow Lake-S (with LGA 1851 meant to stick around for Arrow Lake-S Refresh). But now... well, now there's the issue of whether Intel continues on with LGA 1851 for Nova Lake-S and Razer Lake-S, but personally, I think changing sockets right after LGA 1851 is going to set off alarm bells for consumers.

Intel Arrow Lake-S Refresh reportedly canceled: Nova Lake will now succeed Arrow Lake

Intel has reportedly nixed its upcoming Arrow Lake-S Refresh, where rumor has it that Nova Lake will now succeed the upcoming Core Ultra 200 series "Arrow Lake-S" desktop CPUs.

Intel Arrow Lake-S Refresh reportedly canceled: Nova Lake will now succeed Arrow Lake

In a new post on Chiphell and X, leaker "Panzerlied" said that the Arrow Lake Refresh has been "canceled" adding that Arrow Lake-S will "battle for two years". Intel appears confident that its upcoming Core Ultra 200 series "Arrow Lake-S" processors that it will push out its next-gen CPU launch until Nova Lake.

Arrow Lake-S Refresh would've been compatible with the new LGA 1851 socket, but we can expect Nova Lake to slot right into the new LGA 1851 socket, but things could change (I doubt it, changing sockets from LGA 1700 to LGA 1851 and then again in two years would look HORRIBLE against AM5 and its many years of life so far, and into the future).

RTX 4090 GPU prediction seems to be true: stock thins, prices rise - ahead of RTX 5090 launch?

Darren Allan | Graphics Cards | Sep 23, 2024 2:08 PM CDT

NVIDIA's RTX 4090 graphics card is running low on stock, and prices are rising quite rapidly, at least over in a couple of European countries - but this may well soon happen in the US, as we heard in a previous prediction.

3D Center (via VideoCardz) spotted that in Germany and Austria the RTX 4090 is selling out and some big retailers just have the one product left which is being sold at a predictably inflated price.

All this is happening following very recent rumors that NVIDIA is about to pull the plug on RTX 4090 production (and the RTX 4090D for that matter, the variant for the Chinese market).

Qualcomm CEO is 'personally involved' with Intel takeover talks, which are at 'an early stage'

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Sep 23, 2024 6:52 AM CDT

I'm sure that by now you've heard the rumors that Qualcomm has been pushing for a takeover of Intel, which would be the largest semiconductor industry acquisition in history... and it's something Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon is "personally involved" in.

Qualcomm CEO is 'personally involved' with Intel takeover talks, which are at 'an early stage'

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon is "personally involved" in the negotiations to acquire 50-year-old (struggling) tech- juggernaut Intel, according to a "source who was briefed on the matter" reports Reuters. Additionally, another person familiar with the situation said that the Qualcomm CEO has been "actively examining various options for a deal for the company".

Earlier rumors pointed to Qualcomm considering acquiring bits and pieces of Intel's chip design business, and that its PC design unit was of interest to the company. Qualcomm executives were examining Intel's entire portfolio of businesses, according to Reuters, which added that the sources "requested anonymity as the discussions are confidential".

Intel scoops in $8.5 billion in new funding over the last few days, as Qualcomm eyes takeover

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Sep 23, 2024 6:07 AM CDT

Apollo Global Management Inc. has offered to make a multi-billion-dollar into Intel according to the usual "people familiar with the matter" reports Bloomberg, in timing that couldn't be more perfect for the company experiencing its biggest issues in its 50+ year history.

Intel scoops in $8.5 billion in new funding over the last few days, as Qualcomm eyes takeover

Apollo Group manages assets worth close to $350 billion, and is putting forward an "equity-like" investment of up to $5 billion towards Intel, which should (but doesn't have to, nor should it completely) restore some confidence in Intel's turnaround strategy. Oh, and Intel qualifies for $3.5 billion in federal grants to make semiconductors for the US military.

Except, it's bleeding all over the place, losing chip deals like the next-gen PlayStation 6 to AMD, losing desktop and server + HPC market share to AMD, and struggling to even become (not stay) relevant in the discrete GPU industry.

Microsoft won't have a response to PS5 Pro, instead we wait until Xbox Next and portable Xbox

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 22, 2024 9:41 PM CDT

Sony has unveiled its new PlayStation 5 Pro console, offering a heavily-beefed up gaming experience in November, but what does Microsoft have to retaliate to the PS5 Pro? Absolutely nothing.

Microsoft won't have a response to PS5 Pro, instead we wait until Xbox Next and portable Xbox

Microsoft is fully focused on the next-generation Xbox, something the company teased would offer the "biggest technological leap ever seen between console generations" but that is so far away: somewhere in the 2026 timeframe, which is when Sony will unleash its next-gen PlayStation 6 console, and a purported PS6 handheld, both powered by semi-custom APUs that AMD won the contract for earlier this year (beating out Intel, which pushed hard to get inside of PS6).

We reported earlier this year that Intel wanted to be inside of Microsoft's next-gen Xbox, which would've seen the company fabbing the next-gen APUs inside of the future Xbox in the USA.

Analyst: Apple has been a 'little disingenuous with its marketing' for AI features on iPhone 16

Anthony Garreffa | Artificial Intelligence | Sep 22, 2024 9:11 PM CDT

Apple has released its new iPhone 16 family of handsets, with the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max available across the planet right now... but... where are all those AI features that hte company promised with Apple Intelligence?

Analyst: Apple has been a 'little disingenuous with its marketing' for AI features on iPhone 16

The on-device AI functionality that I've even seen advertised on TV, where they've got Bella Ramsey from The Last of Us looking literally useless without her iPhone and Apple Intelligence. The Hollywood actor... acts... as if she hasn't read the script given to her, so she gets a summary of it from Apple Intelligence, like that's meant to make you buy a multi-thousand-dollar new iPhone 16.

Anyway, now there's analyst Mark Gurman talking about the useless AI features in Apple's new iPhone 16 handsets and that some of them won't be fully-baked until 2025, and some of them are radically behind competing AI on the market. Gurman said that Apple has been a "little disingenuous with its marketing" as Apple claimed the iPhone 16 was the first model "built from the ground up for Apple Intelligence".
