PS5 outselling Xbox Series X/S by 3:1
Sony's PlayStation 5 console may be outselling Microsoft's Xbox Series X/S at a ratio of 3:1, new data estimates indicate.
The Wall Street Journal recently put out a video that discusses Xbox's current state in the games industry. The report included an interesting slide that provided sales estimates for the Xbox Series X/S duo from analyst firm Aldora Intelligence. The group puts Xbox's gen 9 consoles at a combined 28.3 million, compared to the PlayStation 5's confirmed 61.7 million.
If accurate, this represents a substantial 33.4 million gap between the two consoles. The PS5 could be beating the Xbox Series X/S by more units than Microsoft's consoles have actually sold. The figures are meant to underline Microsoft's underdog position in the hardware market--but make no mistake, Xbox is anything but small, and has even repeatedly beat Nintendo on a revenue basis pre-Activision acquisition. After the $70 billion Activision buyout, Xbox generated a record-breaking $21.5 billion in FY24, pushing closer against Sony's earnings dominance.

Intel Lunar Lake CPUs: almost 24-hour battery life, beats Apple M3, M2 Macbook laptops
Intel's new Core Ultra 200V series "Lunar Lake" CPUs are nearly here, launching on September 3, they're slowly making their way into laptops across the world and we've got some early results that see it beating Apple's new M3 and M2 MacBook laptops.
Lenovo has teased its upcoming Yoga Slim 7i Aura Edition laptop, which features the Intel Core Ultra 7 258V "Lunar Lake" CPU and has been benched against the M2 and M3 MacBook laptops from Apple. Lenovo is proud to have all-day, virtually 24-hour battery life thanks to the impressive new feats of the Lunar Lake CPU from Intel.
The company tested Local Video Playback abilities of the Lunar Lake CPU-powered laptop, with 150 nits of brightness while looping a video sample based on the H.264 (1920 x 1080 at 24FPS) format. Intel's Core Ultra 7 258V CPU features 32GB of on-package RAM, with the system running Windows 11 with the 24H2 update. Lenovo adds that this is an engineering sample, and that results could change a little (probably for the better).
Only 1 in 10 PS5 owners have a variable refresh display, most gamers won't benefit from 120 FPS
Most PS5 owners won't use optional 120FPS modes in games that offer them, Sony has said.
Sony just announced its new PS5 Pro console, which features a beefier GPU that can output some serious visual upgrades. Another part of the PS5 Pro's capability is Sony's proprietary PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), a new secret sauce tech that uses AI to upscale image quality. PSSR can also help boost frame rates in games as well, sometimes doubling them in Fidelity Mode, Mark Cerny says.
This advanced tech is promising for enthusiasts who have, say, HDMI 2.1-enabled displays capable of supporting 120FPS, but everyday gamers are still playing mostly on 60Hz TVs. This was also a hot topic during the PS5's launch as the base model could support up to 120FPS output in specific games like Borderlands 3 and Black Ops Cold War.

AMD Ryzen 200 'Hawk Point Refresh' APU tease: fights Intel Core 200 'Raptor Lake Refresh' CPUs
AMD is reportedly cooking up some new Ryzen 200 series "Hawk Point Refresh" APUs to fight a future release of Core 200 series "Raptor Lake Refresh" CPUs from Intel later this year.
In a new post by leaker Golden Pig Upgrade, we're learning that AMD is dropping the "AI" naming from this APU, as the company just launched its new Zen 5-powered Ryzen AI 300 series "Strix Point" APU with an on-board NPU.
Golden Pig Upgrade said: "In order to cope with the release of Raptor Lake Refresh, also known as the Core 200 series (not Core Ultra) at the end of the year, AMD plans to rename the current Hawk Point, also known as the 8040 series, to the Ryzen 200 series (not Ryzen AI) next year. I think our A is still conservative and should be renamed Ryzen 300".
Final Fantasy XVI and Rebirth weren't enough to stabilize Square Enix's operating losses
Square Enix's latest yearly earnings results reflect the challenging environment of the games market, with multiple big games missing the mark for the Japanese games publisher.
According to the latest FY24 results, Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth have apparently fallen short of Square Enix's expectations--a phrase that gamers are used to hearing from the publisher. But it's a bit more nuanced than these games just outright failing.
Square Enix's business is separated into multiple segments. Digital Entertainment is one of these segments, which includes HD Games, MMO, and smartphone games. In the report, Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu says that the profits from the HD Games segment "did not meet our expectations." This isn't sales, though.
Report: Switch 2 specs and design leaked, tablet has USB-C on top, new JoyCon controllers
Computer-generated images of the Switch 2's prototypes have reportedly leaked from an overseas assembling plant, and if accurate, the system doesn't look much different than the current Switch model.
Note: The following information has not been confirmed, verified, or announced by Nintendo.
Nintendo's new Switch 2 handheld-console hybrid may have just been leaked. A full spec sheet alongside CG renders of the Switch 2's purported design have popped up on Chinese message boards, showing a similar design as the original Switch model. At least at first glance.
Intel Core Ultra 200 series CPUs to significantly bump DDR5 memory speeds
Intel's Arrow Lake processors are presumably around the corner, with the latest rumors pointing to a release of the new desktop CPUs sometime in late October.
Ahead of the highly anticipated launch reports have come out that Intel's next-generation of desktop CPUs will come with a significant bump in DDR5 memory speeds, with WCCFTech reporting Core Ultra 200 series CPUs will come with support for 8000-10,000 MT/s with CUDIMM. For those that don't know, CUDIMM or Clocked Unbuffered Dual In-Line Memory Module, is the latest form of DDR5 memory that only came out this year. It was actually showcased at Computex 2024.
The leak about a bump in DDR5 memory speeds comes from MebiuW from Weibo, who wrote that if this performance increase is true, Intel would have widened the memory capability gap between itself and AMD, which is currently struggling to reliably hit 7,000 MT/s. Intel's previous generation, called Raptor Lake, had a difficult job of reaching 8,000 MT/s, which means if these rumors are true, Intel would have made a significant bump in memory speeds with its Intel Core Ultra 200 series.
Apple is now making some of its iPhone processors at TSMC in Arizona: major milestone for USA
Apple is now having its A16 processor made at TSMC's new fab in Arizona, under the same 4nm N4P process node that TSMC's Taiwan factories are using for the best quality and performance.
We have been hearing good things about TSMC's new Fab 21 facility in Arizona, and now that it's pumping out Apple A16 processors, it's another good sign... and fantastic for the United States. Apple is an American company, with Taiwanese giant TSMC opening up a fab on US soil, and now fabbing chips for the iPhone 14.
TSMC is expected to ramp up production at its Fab 21 plant in Arizona over the coming months, with the second stage of its first phase completed, full-scale manufacturing can begin in the first half of 2025. It seems Apple is confident enough with TSMC's ability to make A16 chips at its Arizona fab, because if there were any yield or performance issues, Apple of all companies wouldn't be using them.

61.7 million PlayStation 5 shipped, versus just 28.3 million Xbox Series X/S as of June 2024
We all know that Sony has destroyed Microsoft with the current generation of consoles, but now we have some fresh numbers from June 2024 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S console sales.
In a new video released by WSJ, we have a deep dive into why the Xbox has failed on the market, and specifically the current-gen Xbox Series X/S consoles. Up until June 2024, Sony has sold 61.7 million PlayStation 5 consoles compared to Microsoft which has sold 28.3 million combined consoles between the Xbox Series X/S. The PS2 is still out far in the lead, with 155M+ total sales (compared to just 24.7M sales of the original Xbox at the time).
Sony and Microsoft were both neck and neck with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, with the PS3 selling 87.4M units against the Xbox 360 with 84.9M consoles sold. The PS4 massively out-sold the Xbox One consoles, with the PS4 selling 117M+ units and the Xbox One consoles selling 57.9M units.
At least sixteen people dead after synchronized pager explosion, more than 3,000 injured
In breaking news local officials have confirmed a series of pager explosions have been detected, resulting in the deaths of at least sixteen people and more than 3,000 injured.
The explosions reportedly shook both Lebanon and Syria, with devices heating up severely right before the explosion took place. Multiple reports state these pagers were used by Hezbollah members and that these explosions were deliberate attack by Israel. The Wall Street Journal has reported these pagers were recently imported, and that malware could have caused the batteries to heat up and ultimately explode. Allegedly the pagers had lithium-ion batteries.
James Paterson, the Australian shadow cyber security minister has weighed in on the event, saying these detonations appear to be a very sophisticated and "very patient attack". Additionally, Paterson said that he believes the novelty of this attack will have intelligence agencies around the world thinking how they can prevent such an attack, and how they can carry out one against their own enemies.
EA officially reveals when the next Battlefield game will be playable
At an Electronic Arts Investor Day, EA confirmed that the next game in the long-running Battlefield series will be playable in early 2025. The company confirmed that a "community testing program coming in early 2025" will allow players to go hands-on with an early build.
This follows an earlier report this week where Battlefield head Vince Zampella confirmed that the next game in the series, the follow-up to Battlefield 2049, will see the franchise return to a modern-day setting. Ditching the futuristic 2049 setting, he name-checked fan favorites Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 as the inspiration or launching pad for the next game.
"I mean, if you look back to the peak or the pinnacle of Battlefield, it's that Battlefield 3 [and] Battlefield 4 era where everything was modern," Zampella announced. "And I think we have to get back to the core of what Battlefield is and do that amazingly well, and then we'll see where it goes from there. But I think for me, it's that peak of Battlefield-ness is in that Battlefield 3 and 4 days."

Chinese scientists use Starlink satellite signals to detect stealth aircraft, drones
Chinese scientists have successfully completed an experiment using SpaceX Starlink satellite signals to detect stealth targets in the South China Sea.
In a new report from the South China Morning Post, the experiment used a consumer-level DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone (which is about the size of a bird, to give you some perspective) was used to simulate a stealth aircraft. The radar cross-section of the drone was similar to an actual stealth fighter, but instead of using traditional ground-based radar emissions, the scientists detected the drone by analyzing electromagnetic signals from a Starlink satellite passing over the Philippines.
The scientists' detection method uses forward scatter, where an object like a plane or a drone disrupts electromagnetic waves from a satellite, causing small signal disturbances, these disturbances are captured and analyzed to determine where the object is located. This technique doesn't need the radar to emit signals, which makes it harder to someone trying to find your location, or jam it.
Electronic Arts has over 100 active AI projects in development, CEO hypes up generative AI
EA has over 100 artificial intelligence projects in the works, including multiple generative AI technologies.
During today's Investor's Day 2024 stream, EA announced that it was going all-in on AI. Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson outlined many of the key ways that the billion-dollar publisher currently is and plans to use AI across its multitude of games, content, and services.
Wilson also hyped up generative AI, saying that it will be instrumental in unlocking EA's long-term value for investors and consumers alike. EA will use its artificial intelligence tools across three key areas: Efficiency, to speed along game development; Expansion, to greatly enhance the worlds available to devs and gamers; and Transformation, which could completely revolutionize the way users create, share, and play custom games content.
Battlefield boss says PS5 Pro price isn't bad 'you're not getting the same perf from a $700 PC'
Respawn boss and manager of the Battlefield franchise, Vince Zampella, has talked about the $699 pricing on Sony's newly-announced PlayStation 5 Pro console.
Zampella said the higher $699 pricing on the PS5 Pro was a little shocking at first, but ultimately, he makes a good point out of saying that "you're not getting the same performance" out of a $700 PC that you will get from the PlayStation 5 Pro.
He said: "I think it's expected, and anything that gets us better performance for the people that really love it. To me, it's an amazing thing. I was watching something on it where the price... where they look at is it the most expensive. And it really isn't. If you go back, some of the older consoles were just as expensive and probably adjusted for inflation were probably more. So it at first seemed a little shocking, but it's kind of like, it's actually not that bad. And if you get a $700 PC, you're not getting the same performance that you're getting out of it".
