Apple's new Magic Mouse brings a wizard improvement - and an inexplicably dumb move too
Apple just announced a new Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard, plus a Magic Trackpad, alongside the new iMac 24-inch for 2024 which is its first M4-toting Mac - and there's some good news here, but also a very annoying development.
The positive news is that the new magic peripherals - which come bundled with the iMac M4, or the mouse and keyboard do - now have USB-C charging ports, as opposed to Lightning connectors.
So, we can all breathe easy on the charging front, as the proprietary nonsense gets shoved thankfully to one side, and you can use any old USB-C cable to juice up the new Apple peripherals.
Apple's iMac M4 has 16GB of RAM minimum, brings back nano-texture glass as an anti-glare option
Apple has revealed its new iMac 24-inch with M4 CPU in the first of its Mac-related announcements that are set to run throughout this week (likely up to Halloween).
With the M4 chip inside, Apple tells us that the new iMac is up to 1.7x faster for productivity, and just over twice as fast (2.1x) for demanding workflows (such as photo editing) in comparison to the iMac with M1. Gamers can also expect much better performance with double the frame rates, again compared to the iMac with M1 silicon.
As ever, Apple prefers to compare the newest model to the last release but one, rather than the last-gen iMac (with M3), to ensure that the upgrade looks like a more compelling leap forward. And twice as fast, broadly, certainly is a huge improvement on the iMac M1.
'Highly secretive' Apple app is being tested among employees, designed to prevent diabetes
A new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, a known Apple insider and industry analyst, claims the Cupertino company is working on a new health app designed to monitor blood sugar levels.
According to Gurman's trusted Apple employees were given access to the new application that was described as "highly secretive". This new application was also described as a food-logging app, and Apple selected some employees who were prediabetics, requiring them to submit their blood sugar measurements and food intake. Presumably, the logging of the food will inform the user when their blood sugar levels are spiking/crashing.
Ideally, Apple wants to be able to create a noninvasive method of monitoring blood sugar levels, and according to Gurman, the company has been working on it for more than 10 years. However, it's reportedly not ready as Apple is suffering from issues with shrinking the size of the monitor while also keeping it operational without overheating.
Apple is officially banned from selling iPhones in Indonesia
Apple has been blocked from selling its bread and butter product, the iPhone, and its multiple variations, according to the Indonesian Ministry of Industry.
According to reports, Apple has been officially blocked from selling iPhones domestically following its failure to abide by the 40% local content requirement for smartphones, which requires at least 40% of all parts within a product to be manufactured locally. The iPhone 16 has unfortunately fallen short of this requirement, meaning Apple Indonesia hasn't fulfilled the requirement of obtaining a local content certification and now, therefore, cannot sell the latest generation of iPhone.
At the moment, Apple has no manufacturing facilities in Indonesia, but since 2018, the company has been establishing developer academies throughout the country, in which they have invested approximately $101.8 million. Indonesia isn't a small region for Apple either, as the country has more than 350 million active mobile phones among its 270 million residents, meaning there could be quite a lot of potential iPhone customers waiting for the latest generation iPhone.

Halo 5 PC port cancelled over technical issues says former developer
A former developer of Halo 5 has spoken out about a PC port that, at one point, was being worked on at the studio but was ultimately never released.
Tyler Owens, an engineer for Apex Legends, who also previously worked on Halo 5, replied to an X user on his post highlighting Halo 5. The user mentioned they wanted a PC port for Halo 5, to which Ownes replied, "Never going to happen," in his opinion, and went on to explain the port that was originally being considered was scrapped due to "significant-tech hurdles." It appears these tech hurdles led to Microsoft ultimately canceling a PC port.
Reports have speculated the reason for the PC ports cancelation is to do with Halo 5's framerate being linked to its in-game physics and the difficulties of porting that to PC. However, that was never confirmed by Microsoft or 343 Industries, the development studio behind the project. Unfortunately, Owens didn't specify exactly what the technical issues were that stopped the PC port.

Intel Z890 motherboards and Arrow Lake CPUs reportedly have serious issues with Windows 11 24H2
Those of you who have taken the plunge with an Intel Arrow Lake CPU in a Z890 motherboard need to be aware there's an issue with this hardware when updating to Windows 11 24H2 - a serious flaw, in fact.
Spanish tech site El Chapuzas Informatico first reported on those with Z890 motherboards encountering nasty issues with random crashing and reboots after updating to Windows 11 24H2.
This is seemingly due to a conflict between the Arrow Lake CPU's integrated graphics, and the discrete graphics card in the PC (so will only affect those who have a discrete GPU - the majority of folks no doubt).
AMD Ryzen 9800X3D full specs spilled, plus benchmark leak sees the CPU equal 9950X in Geekbench
AMD's Ryzen 9800X3D has been the subject of a flood of leaks lately, and here's another couple - a leaked benchmark showing excellent non-gaming performance, alongside the full (purported) specs spilled via a retail source.
Wccftech picked up the benchmark leak which is another Geekbench result, where the Ryzen 9800X3D recorded a result of 3,339 points in single-core and 18,658 in multi-core. This was with PBO turned on (and boost to 5.27GHz) we're told, and it neatly eclipses the 7800X3D to the tune of 20% to 25% or so.
Of course, this is Geekbench and not gaming, but it shows just how much of a leap in all-round performance that the Ryzen 9800X3D theoretically delivers - a contention backed up by other leaks in recent times.
Scientists release world's first footage of a water molecule forming out of thin air
Water is something we interact with every day, but where does it come from and how is it formed? Researchers have captured the event of a water molecule forming on the nanoscale, showcasing hydrogen and oxygen fusing together to form H20.
Researchers from Northwestern University penned a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America and a press release on the Northwestern website discussing the scientific achievement in more natural language. According to the press release, this is the first time researchers have witnessed the formation of tiny water bubbles in real-time or the evolutionary process of two hydrogen atoms merging with an oxygen atom to form H20 or water.
The team was able to do this through the use of a rare metallic element called palladium, which catalyzes the gaseous reaction to form the water molecule. Here's what happened. Using a special ultra-thin glassy membrane that can contain the molecules and be attached to a high-vacuum electron microscope, the researchers were able to see the two hydrogen atoms enter the palladium element, expanding its material structure. Shortly after, a water bubble formed on the surface of the palladium.
NVIDIA briefly dethrones Apple to become the world's most valuable company
On Friday, October 25, 2024, NVIDIA briefly overtook Apple to become the world's most valuable company with an eye-watering market cap of $3.53 trillion. This put NVIDIA's valuation higher than Apple's $3.52 for a moment, closing the day at $3.47 trillion in second place ahead of Microsoft.
This market marks the second time NVIDIA has taken the crown from its tech giant rivals Apple and Microsoft, reaching this height in June 2024. Even though it feels like we're only starting to get used to talking about NVIDIA in the same light as companies like Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Meta, with everyone laser-focused on generative AI, this remarkable result makes sense.
NVIDIA, the clear leader in AI hardware software and chip design, has hardware and technology in almost every data center and system currently working with AI models, from significant endeavors from companies like OpenAI to workstations sitting on a desk running desktop RTX hardware in the office of a small startup somewhere.
TCL plans to reduce the cost of OLED displays dramatically, with inkjet printing
Recently, we reported a pretty impressive figure showing that OLED shipments, that is, displays with OLED panel technology, had increased 181% year-over-year in a recent quarter. It's a trend that is set to continue, and for PC and gaming enthusiasts, it makes a lot of sense. From response times to color accuracy to the near-infinite contrast levels that deliver perfect black levels, OLED displays feel like the next level after traditional LED or LCD technology.
One reason for the dramatic shift toward OLED is that production costs have come down, which has seen companies like MSI capture a large portion of the market share with competitive and affordable products. OLED displays in 2024 are also brighter, and long-lasting measures are in place to combat burn-in and overheating.
That said, OLED panel technology is still expensive to produce compared to non-OLED display technology. The manufacturing process, which includes organic materials, is still quite complex. TCL, a company making waves in the display market, plans to improve and make OLED affordable. Inkjet-printed OLED - just like that Canon printer you used to print school reports back in the day.
AMD claims Radeon has up to 38% more performance than NVIDIA in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
AMD has just fired off an email blast that claiming its Radeon graphics cards offer up to 38% more performance than the competition (NVIDIA) in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
The Red Team states in its email that AMD Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards can offer gamers up to 38% more performance than the competition, which at this point is just NVIDIA, considering Intel owns less than one percent of the graphics card market. It could even be argued that AMD isn't much competition, considering NVIDIA's dominance at 88% market share of all GPU shipments.
Regardless of those figures, AMD states in its e-blast that even at the "most extreme settings," it will beat the competition in terms of performance in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Moreover, AMD highlighted its alleged wins and how each Radeon card would offer the claimed performance increase over the competition. According to the Red Team, the Radeon RX 79000 XTX and the RX 7900 XT offer up to 22 and 21% faster performance than "competing graphics solutions at native 4K with Extreme settings enabled".
Elden Ring is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 in a 'Definitive Edition' says leaker
A source has claimed FromSoftware's immensely popular title Elden Ring will be released on Nintendo's next-generation console, presumably called the Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo hasn't even announced its new console yet, and we are already hearing rumblings about what games could be getting a port over to its new platform. According to reports citing the leaker Nash Weedle, who took to X to tease that a "Definitive Edition" of Elden Ring is in the works at the development studio Virtuos, the studio behind Dark Souls Remastered. Additionally, Virtuos has worked on other remasters such as BioShock: The Collection and Assassin's Creed Liberation Remastered.
Notably, Dark Souls Remastered is currently the only FromSoftware title available on Nintendo's latest console, the Switch, which somewhat adds hope to the claims that Virtuos is behind the rumored Elden Ring port. As for when we could see Elden Ring on the Nintendo Switch 2, leaker Nash Weedle believes the remaster will be released sometime in late 2025, which is in line with Nintendo's rumored release window for its upcoming console.
Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered PC requirements revealed, GeForce RTX 4080 required for 4K 60FPS
Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is an updated version of the original open-world adventure in the Horizon series for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and PC. Its visuals align with its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, with revamped lighting, environments, character detail enhanced 4K textures, more foliage, and even 10 hours of new mocap animation. As seen in the announcement trailer, the updated graphics are pretty impressive.
It also adds full Dual Sense controller integration and support to the game and will be available as a $10 upgrade to those that owned the original. The PC version will support DLSS 3, FSR 3.1, Ultrawide (21:9), Super Ultrawide (32:9), and even triple monitor setups. Like the original, it supports a wide range of hardware; however, with PC developer Nixxes Software posting the PC hardware requirements to social media - it's a far more hardware-intensive game than the original release.
The recommended specs have been bumped up. The original release's CPU requirement of an Intel Core i7-4770K at 3.5GHz or Ryzen 5 1500X at 3.5GHz has been updated to an Intel Core i5-8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600. The recommended hardware on the GPU side has also been bumped up, going from a GeForce RTX 1060 or Radeon RX 580 to a GeForce RTX 3060 or Radeon RX 5700.
Samsung's new and potentially breakthrough memory technology blends RAM and SSDs
Samsung is deploying some of its resources to increase the development of a new type of memory that combines the properties of traditional RAM and SSDs.
The new type of memory is called Selector-Only Memory (SOM), and according to eeNews Analog, Samsung researchers are using a unique material capable of performing the operations of memory and storage. However, it isn't just a matter of combining two complex technologies together to form a new one, as the mixture of materials need to be just right for optimal performance on both fronts: memory and storage.
In order to determine what mixture will perform best, Samsung researchers plugged the necessary data into an advanced computer modeling system to specify a list of total possible mixtures. Samsung landed on 4,000 possible combinations that could work to create a viable SOM, and instead of testing each of these mixtures manually, the team ran simulations. Using advanced computer simulations, the team reduced the 4,000 possible combinations down to just 18 prime candidates, saving an immense amount of time on fabricating and physically testing each design.

We reported on an impressive mod a week ago in which an enthusiast turned an original Xbox console into a handheld gaming device. This week, it's the PS4's turn, with the PlayStation 4 Slim console turned into a portable gaming handheld by YouTube creator and retro hardware expert Restore Technique.
The dimensions of the end product, 249 x 156 x 49.2mm, and an overall weight of 1700 grams make it a hefty unit, but it's still a remarkable build. It makes good use of Sony's smaller PS4 Slim motherboard and more power-efficient console. It removes unnecessary elements, ports, and additional mods to keep the heat and power balance in check.
Even so, it required a large 12V 10,000 mAh battery pack and the addition of a custom fan controller to boost the handheld's cooling. In addition to adding a 7-inch IPS display, it even integrates the Dual Shock controller's buttons and triggers to make it a portable PS4.
Apple to unveil new smartphone device that's between an iPad and a HomePod
Industry analyst and Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has teased in his latest edition of the Power On newsletter that Apple is working on a new smart home device that will blend together an iPad and a HomePod.
According to Gurman, the Cupertino company is currently making progress with the development of the new device, which the Bloomberg reporter describes as a "smart home screen". Additionally, Gurman states those wondering about the size of the new device will need to picture something a little smaller than what they are imagining, as it "may be a little smaller than expected." As for specifics, the new Apple device is expected to have a square display that's approximately the size of two iPhone's side-by-side.
The screen is located on the base of the device and is angled, presumably to provide an easier angle for interaction by users. Notably, the physical design of the new device is reminiscent of the iMac G4, which was released in 2002. Gurman writes the base of the new device, just like the iMac G4, will be circular. Additionally, Apple's upcoming smart home device will also have speakers built into the base, which essentially makes the new device an Apple HomePod but with a touchscreen.
Hacker mysteriously gives $20 million in stolen funds back to the US government
Blockchain analysts flagged mysterious transactions that happened between Thursday and Friday last week after a hacker broke into a cryptocurrency wallet owned by the US government, stole funds, and then promptly returned them the next day.
The strange string of events has got cryptocurrency analysts and undoubtedly the departments at the US government scratching their heads, especially considering how high profile this theft was. It began on Thursday when pseudonymous blockchain sleuth ZachXBT highlighted transactions showing millions of dollars being moved out of US government-owned cryptocurrency wallets. In total, about $19.3 million worth of funds were returned to the wallet last Friday, which was in the form of Ethereum (ETH) and the stablecoin USDC.
Where did the funds come from? Reports indicate the US government seized millions of dollars in cryptocurrency two years ago following the infamous Bitfinex hack in 2016. Only an hour after the wallet received its funds back did more transactions start occurring, but this time in smaller quantities. According to reports, funds started being moved to a wallet address beginning with "0x0Ca." After a small amount of Ethereum was sent to this wallet, $6.1 million of ETH was transferred, which was then followed by another $11.6 million worth of aUSDC, a version of the stablecoin that includes interest.

We've been hearing through previous rumors that NVIDIA's flagship GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU would feature 24GB of GDDR7 memory on a 256-bit memory bus, but we could still expect to see the RTX 5090 Laptop GPU launch with 16GB of GDDR7 memory instead. The RTX 5080 Laptop GPU should also have 16GB of GDDR7, while the rest will have 12GB or 8GB of GDDR7 memory.
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang joins King of Denmark to launch sovereign AI supercomputer
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang joined the King of Denmark to launch the country's largest sovereign AI supercomputer, which is aimed at breakthroughs in quantum computing, clean energy, biotechnology and other areas serving Danish society and the world.
Denmark's first AI supercomputer has been dubbed "Gefion" after a goddess in Danish mythology, as an NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD powered by 1528 NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core AI CPUs, interconnected using NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking.
Jensen said: "Gefion is going to be a factory of intelligence. And this factory of intelligence is a new industry that never existed before; it sits on top of the IT industry - we're inventing something fundamentally new. Denmark recognizes that to innovate in AI, the most impactful technology of our time, it must foster a domestic AI infrastructure and ecosystem. The Gefion supercomputer will supercharge the scientists of Denmark with local AI computing infrastructure to drive advancements in life sciences, climate research, and quantum computing".
India-based Reliance supercomputer to be powered by NVIDIA's new Blackwell AI GPUs
NVIDIA will be supplying its new Blackwell AI GPUs to Indian companies including Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries, to build a new AI supercomputer in India.
Reliance is building a new 1 GWh (one-gigawatt hour) data center in the western state of Gujarat, India, announced at an AI summit recently held in the business capital of Mumbai. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and Mukesh Ambani announced the news, with Jensen saying: "In the future, India is going to be the country that will export AI. You have the fundamental ingredients - AI, data and AI infrastructure, and you have a large population of users".
Jensen added: "India is already world-class in designing chips, India already develops AI. Instead of being an outsourcer and a back office, India will become an exporter of AI".
