Microsoft continues to fumble AI PCs: delays Recall feature AGAIN, now drops in December

Anthony Garreffa | Artificial Intelligence | Oct 31, 2024 9:11 PM CDT

Microsoft has delayed its Recall feature yet again, amid all the controversy, the company pushed its big Copilot+ PC feature into December (as it's now missed its promised October release)

Microsoft continues to fumble AI PCs: delays Recall feature AGAIN, now drops in December

Brandon LeBlanc, senior product manager of Windows, in a statement to The Verge: "We are committed to delivering a secure and trusted experience with Recall. To ensure we deliver on these important updates, we're taking additional time to refine the experience before previewing it with Windows Insiders".

The company originally pulled its Recall feature from launch over security concerns -- it was logging everything, like, everything, everything -- ahead of the Copilot+ PC launch with Qualcomm. Now there are AMD and Intel processors with NPUs inside of laptops, and the big Recall feature launching in October, is delayed into December.

Intel's new Core Ultra 9 285K hits OC world record with LN2-optimized heatsink, smashes 7.4GHz

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Oct 31, 2024 8:28 PM CDT

Intel's new Core Ultra 9 285K processor has been used with an ASUS ROG Maximus Z890 Apex motherboard, and an LN2-optimized heatsink from Diabatix to achieve a bunch of OC world records with the CPU overclocked to a bonkers 7448MHz (7.4GHz).

Intel's new Core Ultra 9 285K hits OC world record with LN2-optimized heatsink, smashes 7.4GHz

This achievement was made possible in a collaboration between ElmorLabs Ltd., BenchMarc, OGS, and CENS, using a copper heatsink designed by Diabatix and manufactured by 3D Systems. The teams used Intel's new flagship Core Ultra 9 285K processor, and the ASUS ROG Maximus Z890 Apex motherboard with an LN2 cooling system and a copper heatsink designed by Diabatix and manufactured by 3D Systems.

The heatsink was custom-built to work with liquid nitrogen, which we all know as a substance that runs at an extremely low temperature, allows for continuous, stable performance under high-temperature conditions (like overclocking the hell out of a new Core Ultra 9 285K processor). Diabatix notes on its website that liquid nitrogen is commonly used in high-performance cooling for its ultra-low temperature capabilities, but "it also requires carefully designed components to handle these conditions effectively".

Dragon Age: The Veilguard has achieved strong success on Steam, breaking into the top-selling games on Valve's platform while also setting new concurrent player records for publisher Electronic Arts.

Dragon Age The Veilguard tops Steam best-sellers, appears to be singleplayer hit for EA

After 10 years of waiting, BioWare's latest RPG is finally here. Dragon Age: The Veilguard picks up right where Inquisition left off, featuring more action-oriented gameplay and adjusted game mechanics. Despite controversy from the game's characters and themes, Veilguard looks to be a big hit on PC.

As IGN notes, early SteamDB numbers show that Dragon Age: The Veilguard is not only pulling in strong player counts, but is actually the most popular singleplayer game under EA's label on the platform. Veilguard peaked at 70,414 concurrent users, behind Need For Speed Heat's 86,000, but beating Mass Effect Legendary Edition (59,817), Jedi Survivor (67,855), and Jedi Fallen Order (46,550).

Black Ops 6 on Game Pass may not have significantly cannibalized sales after all

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 31, 2024 7:04 PM CDT

One analyst expected Microsoft to lose around 6 million Black Ops 6 sales because of Game Pass, but that number might actually be lower.

Black Ops 6 on Game Pass may not have significantly cannibalized sales after all

Microsoft's latest bet may have paid off, but we can't know how well things went without actual figures. The latest gambit sees Microsoft trading short-term sales for long-term ecosystem growth. That's why Microsoft put Call of Duty, a $31 billion franchise that can sell 25 million games in a single year, onto Xbox Game Pass.

The goal is to grow subscribers and player numbers at the potential sacrifice of game sales--a trend that has punctuated Microsoft's games business since the introduction of the Xbox Game Pass subscription service. Microsoft has admitted that Game Pass can "cannibalize" game sales, a concept that sees users simply paying $20 to subscribe to Game Pass rather than paying $70 to buy the full the game.

Supermicro stock plummets 35% after accounting firm resigns on the spot after DOJ probe

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Oct 31, 2024 6:36 PM CDT

Supermicro is in a lot of trouble right now, with its stock price plummeting 35% today after its accounting firm, Ernest & Young, resigned citing unreliable management and possible law violations.

Supermicro stock plummets 35% after accounting firm resigns on the spot after DOJ probe

Ernest & Young's letter was cited in an SEC filing, which explained: "We are resigning due to information that has recently come to our attention which has led us to no longer be able to rely on management's and the Audit Committee's representations and to be unwilling to be associated with the financial statements prepared by management, and after concluding we can no longer provide the Audit Services under applicable law or professional obligations".

The accounting firm also put into question Supermicro's ability to act with "integrity and ethical values". Supermicro has of course rejected Ernest & Young's claims in its filing, saying that there were "no reportable events" that would implicate Supermicro in any wrongdoing.

Xbox console sales down 30%, hardware only represents 9% of Microsoft's gaming revenue

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 31, 2024 6:07 PM CDT

Xbox hardware revenues decrease in the Q1'25 period and ultimately make up a small proportion of earnings.

Xbox console sales down 30%, hardware only represents 9% of Microsoft's gaming revenue

Microsoft recently reported its Q1 Fiscal Year 2025 results that showed significant year-over-year growth for the Xbox brand. The games division raked in a total of $5.621 billion during Q1, with content and services raking in about 91% of earnings during the quarter. This growth was driven by the recognition of Activision Blizzard King earnings which had not been previously included during last year's Q1 period ($3.919 billion revenue).

Hardware, on the other hand, made $532 million, or 9% of the total. That's a large -31% year-over-year decrease from a year ago's $758 million, but a substantial +54% raise in quarter-over-quarter revenues (Q4'24 delivered just $345 million in HW).

Microsoft throws Windows 11 haters a lifeline - but a year more of Windows 10 support costs $30

Darren Allan | Software & Apps | Oct 31, 2024 3:00 PM CDT

If you've been worrying about what you're going to do in a year, when support runs out for Windows 10 - and you really don't want to upgrade to Windows 11 (or hardware requirements mean that you can't) - then Microsoft has thrown you a lifeline.

Albeit a lifeline with a cost attached, but this is the first time that Microsoft has actually made the scheme to pay for extended support available to the average consumer - with a charge of $30.

Previously, Microsoft has enacted ESU (Extended Security Update) programs for enterprise and education users, with subscriptions per user, but this personal individual option is new.

Nintendo Music mobile app is basically Spotify for Zelda, Super Mario, and other favorite games

Nintendo's latest bright idea is a music app, featuring a whole gamut of tunes from its game library, for Android and iOS devices.

Nintendo Music mobile app is basically Spotify for Zelda, Super Mario, and other favorite games

It's out now and you can download the Nintendo Music app from the Play Store, or Apple App Store, and stream your favorite music from the various Nintendo franchises providing you have a Nintendo Switch Online membership, and you're in the US or Canada.

It's possible to download music for offline listening, as well as streaming, and you can create your own playlists, or pick from a bunch of premade playlists, all as you'd expect from a Spotify-style offering (albeit on the light and fluffy side, admittedly).

Apple MacBook Air gets unexpected upgrade: entry-level now has 16GB of RAM, with no price hike

Darren Allan | Laptops | Oct 31, 2024 8:45 AM CDT

Apple sprang a trio of new M4 Macs on us this week, just as rumored, but the firm has also stealthily upgraded the current MacBook Air models in the background - now equipping them with 16GB of RAM as a base loadout.

Apple MacBook Air gets unexpected upgrade: entry-level now has 16GB of RAM, with no price hike

As you probably haven't missed, all the Macs revealed this week - first we saw the iMac M4, then the Mac mini M4, and finally MacBook Pro M4 models - have 16GB of RAM at the entry-level, and Apple didn't hike the starting price because of this either (thankfully).

So, it makes some sense that Apple would apply the same treatment to the MacBook Air M3 (and M2), and indeed all these laptops now come with 16GB as a minimum, with the price sticking at the same level.

AMD Ryzen 9800X3D price rumor: $479 MSRP may leave some gamers regretting not buying a 7800X3D

Darren Allan | Processors | Oct 31, 2024 7:23 AM CDT

AMD's Ryzen 9800X3D has become a hotbed of speculation recently, and its potential price is one area where we've seen a fair few theories flying around - and here comes another, with a claim that the new X3D CPU will be $30 more expensive.

AMD Ryzen 9800X3D price rumor: $479 MSRP may leave some gamers regretting not buying a 7800X3D

$30 more expensive than what exactly? As you can see from the post on X by leaker Hoang Anh Phu, the assertion isn't qualified, it's just displayed as an 'up arrow' to indicate a price hike, followed by the figure of $30.

This can only mean that AMD is set to price the Ryzen 9800X3D at $30 more than its predecessor (despite some theories on X that it suggests a 30% price hike, though we don't see how you arrive at that conclusion).

Ubisoft very silently launches blockchain RPG with playable NFTs that cost up to $63,000

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Oct 30, 2024 11:55 PM CDT

Ubisoft promised three years ago now that it would be making blockchain games, and here we are: introducing Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, a new PvP blockchain RPG that has playable NFTs that cost as much as $63,000 using in-game currency.

Ubisoft very silently launches blockchain RPG with playable NFTs that cost up to $63,000

Champions Tactics is dubbed a "PvP tactical RPG game on PC" that was developed and published in-house by Ubisoft, where it features collectible figurines of a bunch of warriors from the in-game fantasy world of Grimoria. Players will build squads of 3, and then take to battle in turn-based combat, alrighty then.

Web3 blockchain uselessness is in the form of collecting figurines to battle with, reports IGN, explaining that "when you first start the game, you're given some temporary figurines to play with, but you'll eventually need to either purchase actual figurines, aka NFTs, from other players using either in-game gold or cryptocurrency, or craft your own using the "Forge" system which also requires either in-game currency or crypto".

Intel CEO ran his mouth: lost a huge 40% discount from TSMC after remarks about Taiwan, China

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Oct 30, 2024 11:11 PM CDT

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger made a "big mistake" when he took over as CEO three years ago, with a damning new report from Reuters stating that Gelsinger's comments over the years have strained the relationship wtih TSMC, losing the company a lucrative 40% discount in the process.

Intel CEO ran his mouth: lost a huge 40% discount from TSMC after remarks about Taiwan, China

In the write up by Reuters, the site points that out that Intel had a "sweet deal" going with TSMC, where it would make the chips that Intel designed, but couldn't produce. TSMC was offering "deep discounts" to Intel, according to "four people with knowledge of the agreement".

Reuters says that instead of Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger nurturing the relationship with TSMC -- with Gelsinger hoping to restore Intel's in-house manufacturing process -- ended up offending TSMC by calling out Taiwan's precarious relations with China. Gelsinger said in 2021: "You don't want all of your eggs in the basket of a Taiwan fab". However, in December 2021 encouraging US investment in US chipmakers, Gelsinger said: "Taiwan is not a stable place".

Check out this review of the retail BOX of Sony's upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro console

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Oct 30, 2024 10:30 PM CDT

Sony officially launches its beefed-up PlayStation 5 Pro console next week for $699, with the folks at 4Gamer giving me a good laugh with a review... yes a review of the retail box of Sony's new PS5 Pro console. There's even size comparisons between the PS5, PS4 Pro, and PS4 retail boxes. Check it out:

Check out this review of the retail BOX of Sony's upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro console

The review embargo for the PS5 Pro officially lifts on November 7 when the console goes on sale, so 4Gamer is sticking to that by reviewing just the retail box. The first sentence had me going "the box of the PS5 Pro, which is my favorite, is very black. The white hardware and text stand out against the seductive black, and the contrast between black and white really expresses the PS5 Pro".

4Gamer continues, hilariously writing: "I don't think this is a professional review. As for the smell, I have never tried to smell the PlayStation outer box or the equipment in my life, but I felt a very PS-like fragrance. It is probably the smell of the factory. It smells like it is shipped directly from the source. There is no sound from the box, but I can faintly hear a voice saying "Please let me out. Please let me out ." If this is not an auditory hallucination of me in a hurry the day before publication, it must be the PlayStation fairy".

Elon Musk's xAI to double Colossus AI supercomputer power to 200K NVIDIA Hopper AI GPUs

Anthony Garreffa | Artificial Intelligence | Oct 30, 2024 10:10 PM CDT

Elon Musk's xAI startup is currently in the process of upgrading its Colossus AI supercomputer cluster from 100,000 NVIDIA Hopper AI GPUs, doubling it to an insane 200,000 NVIDIA Hopper AI GPUs.

Colossus is the world's largest AI supercomputer, and is using used to train xAI's Grok family of LLMs (large language models), with chatbots on offer for X Premium subscribers. Elon's massive xAI Colossus supercomputer cluster facility was recently toured (more on that in the links below) and took just 122 days to complete, something NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang recently called Elon Musk "superhuman" because of it.

NVIDIA recently posted some content explaining its partnership with Elon and xAI, with the company explaining: "The supporting facility and state-of-the-art supercomputer was built by xAI and NVIDIA in just 122 days, instead of the typical timeframe for systems of this size that can take many months to years. It took 19 days from the time the first rack rolled onto the floor until training began".

Red Dead Redemption's official PC port runs at 8K 60 FPS on the GeForce RTX 4070

Kosta Andreadis | Gaming | Oct 30, 2024 9:36 PM CDT

Rockstar's original Red Dead Redemption, which debuted on the Xbox 360 back in 2010, is finally available on PC. It only took 14 years to make the jump, but the iconic and classic open-world western is finally playable on everything from a Steam Deck to a high-end rig rocking the latest GeForce RTX Series graphics.

Red Dead Redemption's official PC port runs at 8K 60 FPS on the GeForce RTX 4070

As expected, the PC version supports higher frame rates, resolutions, ultrawide aspect ratios, and technologies like DLSS and Frame Generation. The game's detail also increases thanks to expanded draw distances, crisper textures, and more environment detail. However, it's still a game from 2010, and the PC version is similar to the remastered release for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 - in that not a lot has changed.

And with that, if you've got a GeForce RTX 4070 - one of the most popular GPUs among PC gamers - you'll be able to play the game at 8K 60+ FPS with DLSS.

EA confirms new Mass Effect game will 'maintain the mature tone of the original trilogy'

Kosta Andreadis | Gaming | Oct 30, 2024 8:57 PM CDT

BioWare's Dragon Age: The Veilguard is out today. Based on early reviews and deep dives into the game's visuals, the consensus is that the studio "is back" after a couple of misfires - the live-service Anthem and the messy Mass Effect Andromeda.

EA confirms new Mass Effect game will 'maintain the mature tone of the original trilogy'

That said, the response to Dragon Age: The Veilguard has not been uniformly positive. When the first gameplay footage debuted, many fans were shocked by the dramatic shift in the series' visual tone. Gone was the realism and over-the-top Game of Thrones-style violence of the first Dragon Age game, and in its place, a more 'cartoony,' vibrant, stylized, and almost Pixar-like world. It is a deliberate design choice and one that many have also praised.

Outside of future updates and any potential expansion, BioWare's next major release will be a new game in the beloved Mass Effect franchise. It will pick up the story after the climactic conclusion of Mass Effect 3 and continue the story of Commander Shepard and the N7 crew. To quash any rumors that the next Mass Effect will change the look and feel of the franchise for a more stylized approach, the game's director, Michael Gamble, posted the following statement to social media.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will target 60fps consoles

Jak Connor | Gaming | Oct 30, 2024 8:33 PM CDT

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is scheduled to release on December 9, and ahead of the title's highly anticipated launch we have some details about how it will run performance-wise on Xbox consoles.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will target 60fps consoles

In an interview with WindowsCentral, creative director of MachineGames, Axel Torvenius explained that closer to launch, the team will release more technical details about the performance of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, but what they can say for now is the team is targeting 60fps for both the Xbox Series X and Series S. Torvenius said there won't be compromised visuals or the experience of the product between the consoles, and the idea of targeting 60fps was to make the game feel "cohesive" for players.

Torvenius has previously revealed details about Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, with the creative director teasing back in September that players will be encouraged to overcome enemies in ways that don't involve guns, and that guns won't be the "primary way forward". Torvenius explained that players will need to be just like Indy, and "use your wits and your whip". The decision to steer players away from gunplay was made to compliment the character of Indiana Jones, who doesn't have superpowers and typically overcomes his opponents by outsmarting them.
