It sounds like more first-party PlayStation games will come to competing platforms

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 30, 2024 6:31 PM CST

Sony technically released its very first Nintendo Switch game with LEGO Horizon Adventures, and it sounds like more multi-platform PlayStation games could be on the way.

It sounds like more first-party PlayStation games will come to competing platforms

2024 saw pretty much everyone breaking game exclusivity except for Nintendo. Both PlayStation and Xbox released first-party games on competing products throughout the year, underlining just how important it is for the Big 3 to work together. Microsoft is all-in on breaking exclusivity as more first-party games like Indiana Jones and Outer Worlds 2 jump to PlayStation 5.

Sony, on the other hand, has been reticent to break exclusivity and offer its marquee games to console rivals. PC is a different story, and Sony has launched nearly 20 PlayStation games on Steam in a bid to sell more copies of its games. But in 2024, Sony also brought its first game to Switch--a smaller-scale, family-friend LEGO game, not a major AAA hit like God of War--and recent comments from PlayStation management may indicate that widespread sales and engagement are more important than closed-end exclusivity.

Sony's new PlayStation mobile games will focus on 'synergy with the console'

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 30, 2024 5:35 PM CST

Having already dominated traditional console gaming and broken onto PC, PlayStation is now moving into gaming's most lucrative market. But what does the future hold for PlayStation mobile games?

Sony's new PlayStation mobile games will focus on 'synergy with the console'

According to analyst firm Newzoo, global gamers spent $92.5 billion on mobile titles throughout 2024. With numbers like these, it's fair to say that everyone wants to get in on mobile, especially big-name companies who really don't have a traditional foothold in the segment. Microsoft went so far as to spend $70 billion to buy Activision so it could boost its mobile gaming presence.

Sony, on the other hand, is trying to build mobile games from the ground up. Sony already has a big mobile hit with Fate/Grand Order, which is operated by subsidiary Aniplex. But Sony's major mobile aspirations will involve its PlayStation Studios brand. Sony plans to license IPs and work with external partners first, meaning PlayStation's mobile games will first be third-party games. First-party studios may eventually work on smartphone games.

Apple rumored to delay using TSMC's new 2nm node, until capacity expands 8x in 2026

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Dec 30, 2024 4:04 PM CST

Apple is reportedly changing plans for its new A19 and M5 processors, which were destined for TSMC's new 2nm process node, but the latest rumors have the new chips sticking to the N3P node as wafer costs are still too high... for now.

Apple rumored to delay using TSMC's new 2nm node, until capacity expands 8x in 2026

In a new post from the Commercial Times, we're learning that Apple's next-gen A19 processor will continue on with the N3P process node, and so too will the Mac-focused M5 processor. TSMC's N3P reduces the number of EUV layers and avoids dual patterning, trading a little transistor density for significantly improved yield rates, and lower production costs -- music to Apple shareholders' ears.

However, as TSMC continues to ramp up its 2nm capacity, the process would become more commercially viable for mass adoption, where by 2026, TSMC's new 2nm process node capacity is expected to boost up from 10,000 wafers during its recent trial production, up to 80,000 wafers per month... a point in which Apple is waiting for before it dives head-first into using 2nm chips.

First-party PlayStation games go through 'rigorous' vetting process before Sony will fund them

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 30, 2024 3:43 PM CST

Games are expensive to make, and because Sony wants to keep its operating margins high, the company says that it has become more selective on which games it will greenlight moving forward.

First-party PlayStation games go through 'rigorous' vetting process before Sony will fund them

Despite breakout best-selling hits like Helldivers 2, Palworld, and Balatro to name a few, 2024 was a tough year for gaming. In a bid to reduce spending, practically every publisher and developer in the games industry had laid off thousands of workers. Projects were also cancelled as companies took write-down losses.

Sony wasn't immune to some tough lessons in 2024. Concord came and went, a flummoxing multi-hundred-million-dollar failure that was shut down within 2 weeks. PlayStation laid off staff, with management commenting: "We have to run a sustainable business."

PlayStation plans to revive classic IPs: 'We're continually looking at opportunities'

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 30, 2024 11:20 AM CST

PlayStation is always looking at new ways to reinvigorate franchises and IP, studios boss Hermen Hulst tells Famitsu.

PlayStation plans to revive classic IPs: 'We're continually looking at opportunities'

While Sony has yet to implement native PS3 backwards compatibility in modern hardware, the company has nonetheless put emphasis on efforts to preserve PlayStation games. Sony launched a proprietary, in-house games preservation team back in 2022 tasked with backing up and archiving 30 years of PlayStation history; the team will "ensure the titles of today are captured, catalogued, and secured for the games industry of tomorrow."

Classic IPs are making a comeback too, albeit in more indirect ways. We've seen Sony add a plethora of multi-generational PlayStation games to its PS Plus catalog, stretching from the PS1 era all the way to the PS4 gen. And while a number of old-school franchises remain dormant, PlayStation's first-party studios group is always on the lookout for new opportunities to resurrect IP.

Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer in higher quality shows Rockstar detail: stretch marks on thighs

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Dec 30, 2024 8:08 AM CST

Grand Theft Auto 6 will be one of the best-looking games of all time when it releases in 2025, with so much detail that Rockstar has been working on stretch marks on a woman's thighs at the beach, and so much more. Check out some of the high-quality shots below:

Rockstar has been cooking up some incredible detail for Grand Theft Auto 6, but it was only when the trailer was uploaded to Chinese social media site Bilibili, that we got to see some of the additional detail lost in the YouTube upload. Check out some of these stills from the trailer above.

The images were picked up by GTA 6 Info on X and shared, where there is actually a decent amount more detail in the Bilibili upload, with Lucia's arm hairs on display, sand sticks to people's feet at the beach (such a nice, small detail) as well as some of the best lip detail that I've seen in a game yet:

NVIDIA's next-gen Jetson Thor systems in 1H 2025: the 'ChatGPT' moment for physical AI, robots

Anthony Garreffa | Science, Space, & Robotics | Dec 30, 2024 2:02 AM CST

NVIDIA is betting big on robotics of the future, where it will launch its latest generation of compact computers -- Jetson Thor -- in the first half of 2025 which is said to be the "ChatGPT moment for physical AI and robotics".

NVIDIA's next-gen Jetson Thor systems in 1H 2025: the 'ChatGPT' moment for physical AI, robots

In a new post from FT, we're learning that "the ChatGPT moment for physical AI and robotics is around the corner" according to Deepu Talla, NVIDIA's vice president of robotics in a recent chat with the Financial Times. He believes that the market has reached the elusive "tipping point" and that Jetson Thor is going to push it over the edge.

NVIDIA entering the robotics industry is going to be huge, but the shift from making all of its cheddar form data center revenue -- including its AI GPUs -- makes up around 88% of its overall sales in Q3 2024 with $35.1 billion. However, Talla says that the shift in the robotics market is driven by two technological breakthroughs: the meteoroic rise in generative AI models, and the ability to train robots on these foundational models, using simulated environments.

Intel is prepping to launch a new Arc 'Battlemage' GPU with 24GB of VRAM in 2025

Kosta Andreadis | Graphics Cards | Dec 29, 2024 10:31 PM CST

Launching earlier this month, the Intel Arc B580, the first Battlemage desktop GPU, has proven itself as a real mainstream PC gaming contender. With a lower price point than the GeForce RTX 4060 and better performance in several key titles, including games with ray-tracing, 12GB of VRAM, and mature drivers, it's a big win for Intel and the Arc Graphics team.

Intel is prepping to launch a new Arc 'Battlemage' GPU with 24GB of VRAM in 2025

According to a new report at Quantum Bits, spotted by @harukaze5719 on X, Intel plans to launch a desktop Battlemage GPU in 2025 with 24GB of memory - double what's found on the Intel Arc B580. The catch? This will be a GPU for the AI, 'Pro,' and workstation market, so it's not a card built for gaming.

This will be a successor to the company's first generation of Intel Arc Pro GPUs and will probably sport the same workstation-friendly slimline design with a blower fan for cooling. With the growing demand for AI workloads and dealing with complex Large Language Models (LLMs), this move makes sense.
