VorpX lets countless games be used on Oculus Rift, costs just $40
Oculus Rift is incredibly awesome, but it is quite limited when it comes to fully supported games. VorpX has stepped in, unleashing its software which is still in beta, which opens up the world of virtual reality to countless new games.
VorpX works with huge games like BioShock Infinite and Mirror's Edge, but best of all, it works with Battlefield 3. None of these games are built to work with the Rift headset, so there are some workarounds that the team of VorpX has used. This includes clicking in and holding down your middle mouse wheel which will let you "edge peak."
Edge peak allows you to look freely at the edges of your field of view, instead of moving within the game world by moving your head, and the Rift. The list of compatible games with Rift thanks to VorpX is huge, and I'm quite excited to test out a bunch of them this week.

Ex-Microsoft privacy adviser doesn't trust MS after NSA PRISM leaks
Caspar Bowden worked for Microsoft between 2002 and 2011 as its Chief Privacy Adviser, but now says he doesn't trust Microsoft's security after he read the stories about the NSA PRISM system after NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden stepped up with the leaks.
Bowden was in control of the privacy policy for 40 countries that Microsoft operated in, but strangely he didn't have anything to do with the United States side of Microsoft's privacy. Bowden says he was simply unaware of the PRISM data-sharing network when he was with the software giant. He said "I don't trust Microsoft now," where he added that he now uses open source software that allows him to peer into the underlying code.
The former privacy adviser to Microsoft said that the NSA PRISM system was undermining democracy by sharing citizens' private information with the UK's GCHQ and intelligence agencies in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. He added: "The public now has to think about the fact that anybody in public life, or person in a position of influence in government, business or bureaucracy, now is thinking about what the NSA knows about them. So how can we trust that the decisions that they make are objective and that they aren't changing the decisions that they make to protect their career? That strikes at any system of representative government."

Samsung to make its three top smartphones work with Galaxy Gear soon
Something that should not even be news and should just be 'the way it is' is the fact that Samsung has announced that its Galaxy S III, S4 and Note II smartphones will work with its Galaxy Gear smartwatch this year.
The South Korean giant will launch its Galaxy Gear this week, so it's perfect timing for this announcement. When Samsung announced its Galaxy Gear, it said it would only work with a single smartphone: the Galaxy Note III, which no one in the US owns yet. The Note III launches in the US on the same day as the Galaxy Gear smartwatch.
Samsung will push out updates later this year to make the Galaxy Gear smartwatch work with its Galaxy S III, Galaxy S4 and Note II smartphones. I really don't understand why Samsung didn't build support in for its flagship devices, considering there's tens of millions of them out there.

Toshiba's TV division in trouble: 50% reduction in staff soon
It looks like another Japanese giant is experiencing trouble, with Toshiba looking to reduce its TV staff by up to 50%. The company will also stop production at two of its three overseas factories before the end of this fiscal year.
Toshiba has said it will also increase outsourced production to 70%, up from 40%, and reduce the amount of its global staff in the TV division by 3,000 with two-thirds of these positions held overseas. Toshiba hasn't penciled in which two factories would be closed, but we should find that out soon enough.
Toshiba has been experiencing losses in its TV division for over two years now, which is blamed on a slowdown in Europe and a drop in domestic demand for its TVs. I'm sure the huge competition from Samsung doesn't help, either.

Android KitKat leaks show the Nexus 5 featuring wireless charging
A newly leaked log file from Android 4.4 KitKat is suggesting that Google's upcoming Nexus 5 smartphone could include an exciting new feature. If the leaked code (around 1,330,000 lines total) is correct, the new Nexus 5 will indeed feature a full HD resolution of 1920x1080-pixels.
More interesting, however, is a little snippet of code that alludes to the the Nexus 5 sporting a fancy new wireless charging feature that could see the removal of a USB port all together. While I feel that the removal of the port would be a bad idea, I really hope that this kicks off a new era of wireless charging and that all of the next-gen phones will remove the tether and break into the realm of cord free charging!

RumorTT: Grand Theft Auto V to hit PC hard drives on November 22
Since the first hints of GTA V hit the wires, the tech media world has been buzzing with rumors that the game may never launch on the PC platform. Unfortunately as time progressed, that rumor began to look more and more like reality. The PC gaming community even launched a Change.org petition based around bringing GTA V to PC, which gathered more than 500,000 signatures.
Fortunately, it appears that all of our worries and pleas to Rockstar may have been answered. The website gta5tv.com posted a report over the weekend that suggests the fastest selling game in history will infact be making a deput on the PC. The launch date is said to coincide with the Xbox One launch date of November 22, and apparently the information came straight from the source itself: Rockstar Games.
If you take a step back and look at some recent rumors and leaks, it seems like a November launch is really going to happen. This is good news for PC gamers everywhere as the PC will be able to showcase the most expensive game ever made in a whole new light. GTA V will look amazing on the PC, and is said to feature 2K graphics and will run on DirectX 11.

John McAfee has a solution to our NSA spying problems, will cost $100
John McAfee, modern day eccentric millionaire and founder of McAfee Antivirus, announced over the weekend that he has devised a plan to block the illegal--and legal--spying from the NSA once and for all. McAfee outlined his plan on Saturday while speaking at an event in San Jose, California.
The big plan involves a device created by McAfee which he calls "D-Central." The gadget is essentially a wireless networking hub that allows smartphones, tablets, laptops, and any other Wi-Fi connected device to access what is basically a darkweb-like network that blocks mainstream intrusion from the government. The D-Central device would retail for $100 or less and McAfee says that he has been planning the device for several years now.
D-Central will provide not only a private (darkweb) connection, but will provide a public one as well and can be used to share files, chat, and research without ever unveiling your identity. McAfee said that the device has a range of about three blocks, and at the moment D-Central "is round in shape" and features "no screens". A working prototype is said to be just six months away and McAfee is actively searching for partners to help with development. Anyone looking for more information can hit up the source below to check out the official D-Central website.

Google to acquire a bunch of ex-BlackBerry engineers
BlackBerry is quite quickly circling the sink, ready to be sucked into it, but before then it looks like Google is acquiring a bunch of ex-BlackBerry engineers.
Reuters reports that Google's Motorola Mobility division is setting up a new hub in Waterloo, Ontario - BlackBerry's hometown. The company is looking to take in people who have backgrounds in engineering and computer science. Even with BlackBerry starting to fade, Waterloo is a massive hub of talent thanks to the University of Waterloo's top-notch computer science program.
The Engineering Director at Motorola Canada, Derek Phillips, has told Reuters that Motorola is looking to "get just as many people who are interested to come out and hire as many people as we can."

Vanished, an experimental horror game that uses only audio
Horror games seem to be experimented with more than other genres, which is exciting, but Pixel Heart Studios' 'Vanished' seems like quite the idea. Vanished is an audio-only game, featuring no graphics, no images, and no walls - your imagination is where the scares take place.
The world of Vanished is "without light, with no memories of how you got there and no clues on why everything has disappeared." Vanished is free until October 1 for iOS devices, with the game using the iPhone's internal compass and accelerometer to recreate the player's movement.
Players hold their iPhone in the direction they want to 'travel' within the game, touching the screen to walk. If you're in danger in the game, you shake the iPhone to attack. All exploration within Vanished is done within audio cues, as players move, the world "rotates" and provides different kinds of sounds.

XFX's Radeon R9 280X Double Dissipation GPU is a hot mess
We're not far away from the retail launch of AMD's next-gen Radeon GPUs, but ahead of that we have a look at XFX's Radeon R9 280X Double Dissipation GPU which looks unbelievably hot.
XFX has donned the new GPU in a completely new cooling design, which just looks beautiful. The color scheme is black and red with silver trims, with dual 100mm fans and copper heat pipes and an aluminum heatsink underneath keeping everything nice and cool, and quiet. Underneath the exotic-looking cooling setup, we have the Tahiti XTL GPU.
The Tahiti XTL GPU features 2048 Graphics CoreNext stream processors, 128 TMUs, 32 ROPs, and a 384-bit memory bus that supports up to 3GB of RAM. We should expect the pricing on this GPU to sit somewhere between $299 and $329.

Apple secures one of Nike's designers, will help out with the iWatch
Apple seems far behind the wearable devices game, with a bunch of its competitors unveiling wearable devices, mainly Samsung's Galaxy Gear and heck, even the Galaxy Gear 2 is being teased already. This isn't even considering the awesome Omate TrueSmart, either and all before Apple has its first-gen device on our wrists.
Now we have a report that states Apple has scooped up one of Nike's top design directors, who will work on wearable devices for the company. Ben Shaffer was Nike's Studio Director of Innovation Kitchen, which might sound weird, but it's actually Nike's R&D arm that is responsible for products like the Nike FuelBand, which is a favorite of Apple's executives.
Shaffer will most likely begin working on the rumored iWatch, but the latest rumors peg it to be released late next year after some engineering problems.

iPad loses its lead in the tablet market to Android-based slates
The iPad came out years ago now and has been enjoying being the leader of the tablet market share game from Android-based slates, but that ends now. New numbers are in from ABI Research, which reports that during Q2 2013, Android-based tablets overtook Apple iPads in terms of volume.
The total amount of money spent on the two tablets, iPads and Android-based slates, was reportedly split nearly down the center. This is a big difference, because normally Apple has enjoyed throwing its arms in and raking in all of that glorious cash. The benefit Android has over iPad is that there are plenty of manufacturers making Android-based slates, versus only Apple making the iPad.
This ends up with no one being the true leader against Apple, so it's not Samsung, ASUS or any other manufacturer. ABI Research's numbers indicate that 60% of iPads sold in Q2 2013 were iPad minis, and not the full-sized iPad.

Xi3 to unveil its PISTON console on Monday, the first Steam Machine?
This week has been quite packed with Valve-related news, with SteamOS, Steam Box, Steam Machines and the new Steam Controller. Now we have a company that was tied to Valve for the Steam Box, unveiling its new PISTON gaming console on Monday.
Xi3 has teased that "the wait is over" with the date 9/30/13 below it. We should expect the PISTON console to be a variation of the usual PISTON PCs, but in console form. We don't know exactly what to expect, but maybe this will be the first Steam Machine? Especially considering that Xi3 was who Valve reportedly chose to show off prototypes of the Steam Box in its early form.

BlackBerry's failed Z10 cost the company almost $1 billion in losses
We are finding out why BlackBerry decided to cancel its investors call this afternoon. The company has released its financial report that suggests that it lost almost $1 billion due to its flagship Z10 failing to excite customers. Last quarter, the Z10 accounted for more than $934 million in losses with an overall loss of $965 million.
The BlackBerry Z10 is not solely responsible for the company's downfall, however. Years of stagnant progress and lack of innovation led up to the once king of smartphones being rendered a beggar peasant among kings. The company reported only $1.6 billion for the quarter, which was off by almost 50 percent from last year. It did manage to ship 3.7 million smartphones, which pales in comparison to Apple who claimed 15 million iPhones last weekend alone.

Flooding once again threatens Thai industrial park
Some of you may remember the flooding in Thailand back in 2011 that caused the prices of hard drives to skyrocket. A similar situation could arise again, if rainfall continues. A recent report says that flooding is already "encircling" the Thai industrial park, but the Government promises a repeat of 2011 will not happen.
During the flooding in 2011, more than 800 people lost their lives across Thailand, and enough damage was done to the tech industry to cause hard drive prices to skyrocket to levels not seen in years. It took more than a year for tech prices to level off, but more importantly, Thailand has yet to recover fully from the damage. We will be keeping a close eye on flooding reports and our storage gurus Paul Alcorn and Chris Ramseyer will alert us of any breaking news.

Half-Life 3 not announced, Valve introduces Steam Controller instead
Well it has happened folks, Valve has made its third and final announcements of the week and unfortunately no mention of Half-Life 3 was made. We did, however, get a thorough rundown of the final piece of the puzzle to a unified Steam gaming experience for the living room.
The final announcement was centered around the all new Steam Controller, a very funky looking peripheral that features not one but two touch sensitive trackpads, an LCD-based touchscreen that doubles as a button, and multiple triggers / buttons. The new Steam Controller is said to work with every game in the Steam library, even the ones that were never designed to support a game pad. Valve says that they achieved this by tricking the game into thinking the controller is actually a mouse and keyboard.

Benchmarks leak on Google's upcoming Nexus 5, appears to dominate all
Google's Nexus smartphones have always been powerful and respectable devices in the Android world, and the upcoming Nexus 5 is shaping up to the biggest and baddest flagship for Google ever. Today, benchmark results have leaked that are giving us a clue as to just how powerful the new Nexus 5 will be.
The benchmarks suggest that the Nexus 5 will be the top model in its class in terms of performance, graphics, and hardware specifications. One benchmark even suggests that graphics performance will be on-par with or better than Apple's new 64-bit iPhone 5S. Additionally, the Nexus 5 will feature a full HD screen, which is a much higher resolution than the iPhone 5S.
Other rumored specifications include a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel camera, and a 7-band LTE radio. It will run Android 4.4 KitKat and will be upgradeable to Android 5.0, if Google's past upgrade maps are any indication.

We preview Dirt 3 spanned across three 4K monitors via the R9 290X
AMD GPU14 - Dirt 3 is one of my favorite off-road racing games, and it still packs a punch in the graphics department. While the game itself is a little old to be showing off at a next-gen GPU launch event, demonstrating it running across three 4K resolution monitors from a pair of AMD Radeon R9 290X GPUs in Crossfire mode is pretty sweet.
Shawn Baker said that this demo really showed off how exciting 4K and next-generation graphics really are. He said that the game appeared crisper than ever, and the R9 290X GPUs really kept the frame rates high so things seemed seamless and smooth. We can not wait to get our hands on this technology and bring our readers comprehensive reviews and guides to multiple monitor 4K gaming.

AMD GPU14 - We preview the upcoming spell casting game Lichdom
AMD GPU14 - Shortly after yesterday's keynote at the AMD GPU14 Tech Event, our own Shawn Baker had the chance to preview some cool games, of which Lichdom was the first. Lichdom is a magic spell crafting style game in which you are left to roam the realm that is filled with aggressive NPCs, ghosts, and monsters. Players can craft over a million different spells and then chain them together to create devastating and deadly combos.
Lichdom was being shown off at the event as it showcases all of AMD's new Radeon technology. The game utilizes effects such as TrueSound, Tress FX, and much more, and is developed by Xaviant, a company based out of Atlanta, Georgia. Lichdom is expected to release summer 2014, and being a major fan of games such as Skyrim, I will be first in line for my copy!
