Director hoping for 'Guardians of the Galaxy' 4K Blu-ray

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Apr 25, 2017 7:31 PM CDT

With all of the major Hollywood studios committing to the burgeoning 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format with the exception of Disney, their ownership of the 'Star Wars' and Marvel franchises, not to mention the collection of animated classics leaves a huge hole in the format's catalogue. But Marvel director James Gunn is hoping he can convince Disney to join the format in time for the release of the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' sequel on home video.

On the red carpet for the 'Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2' premiere, Gunn told BBC journalist Lizo Mzimba that a Dolby Vision enabled 4K release is on the cards, if he can first get the studio to agree to join the format.

Xiaomi could launch in the US in two years

Lana Jelic | Mobile Devices | Apr 25, 2017 6:23 PM CDT

Xiaomi phones are extremely popular in Asia, but they have yet to conquer the world. Their absence from certain markets, especially the US market, is preventing them from taking an even bigger share of the market and is affecting their global market share rank. And the thing is...Xiaomi doesn't lack the customer's interest. So why aren't they present in the US? And when will they be?

Xiaomi could launch in the US in two years

Wang Xiang, Xiaomi's senior vice president who recently took over the role from Hugo Barra, helped answer those questions.

In an interview with CNET, Xiang said that the Chinese manufacturer's phone will launch in the US "in two years, if not sooner."

Kingdom Hearts 3 may release in 2019

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 25, 2017 2:14 PM CDT

Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII: Remake won't release in 2017, and have been adjusted to Square Enix's "beyond" Fiscal Year 2018.

Kingdom Hearts 3 may release in 2019

Surprising no one, a February Square Enix investor relations sheet reveals Kingdom Hearts III's actual release may be some time away. The publisher lists both Final Fantasy VII: Remake and Kingdom Hearts III as "FY2018 and beyond." At first the diagram gives hope of a 2017 release, as Square Enix's Fiscal Year 2018 calendar is from April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2018, however both projects are lumped in with the publisher's new Marvel games which won't be announced until 2018.

Essentially this means we shouldn't see any Kingdom Hearts III or Final Fantasy VII: Remake announcements until after Square Enix's FY18 ends on March 2018 at the earliest. Since both games are slated "beyond FY18" that means they should release in FY19, which is held from April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019, so both games may not be released until 2019.

Google Pixel 2 devices to feature Snapdragon 835

Lana Jelic | Mobile Devices | Apr 25, 2017 12:17 PM CDT

Google's Pixel smartphone was one of the best phones of last year, and the company has confirmed that its successor will come this year.

Google Pixel 2 devices to feature Snapdragon 835

The original Pixel device was launched in October last year, so we won't see the Pixel 2 anytime soon. However, rumors are already floating around with the latest one being that the device will be powered by a Snapdragon 835.

Snapdragon 835 is Qualcomm's latest SoC, so although it makes sense for Google to use it in their newest device, have in mind that the phone won't be unveiled for another few months. This suggests that Google will launch the Pixel 2 before Qualcomm releases their new yet to be announced platform.

Fisker to unveil their new electric car in August

Lana Jelic | Electric Vehicles & Cars | Apr 25, 2017 10:26 AM CDT

Henrik Fisker wants to forget all about its past failures and start a new page. He launched a new company, Fisker Inc. last year, previously known as Fisker Automotive.

Fisker to unveil their new electric car in August

Fisker Automotive is related to what some call the biggest failure in the history of electric cars. In 2011 they announced the Fisker Karma, a $108,000 electric car, that turned out to have a pretty bad karma... The car was recalled multiple times due to many issues and the entire fiasco ended with the company filing for bankruptcy.

Given the history, Fisker's decision to come back to the electric car market is brave. Last year, Fisker announced that they are working on a new electric car - EMotion.

Illfonic's horror-infused slasher-fest game rendition of Friday the 13th will release on May 26, 2017 on all platforms.

New Friday the 13th game slashes PC, consoles this May

Fans have been patiently waiting for official confirmation of Friday the 13th: The Game's launch date, and the devs at Illfonic delivered the news in a gore-tastic trailer that really captures the terror of the original films.

Friday the 13th is primarily a multiplayer game with mechanics like Evolve: one player takes the role of Jason and uses his immortal-like hellion powers to hunt down camp counselors at the infamous Camp Crystal Lake. The other players have to work together by collecting weapons, setting traps, and coming up with creative strategies within the camp's sandbox environment.

Nintendo Switch owners can share game updates locally

Nintendo Switch owners will soon be able to share game updates locally without having to connect to the internet.

Nintendo Switch owners can share game updates locally

I noticed something interesting while checking out the games management section on the Nintendo Switch's home screen: console owners will soon be able to "exchange update data with local users." This feature isn't yet available, and Nintendo promises it will be available in a future firmware update.

How will this work exactly? Let's say one of your friends has the latest update for Zelda: Breath of the Wild on their Nintendo Switch, but you haven't downloaded it yet. Your friend can simply share their update patch with your Switch via wireless connectivity and update your game on-the-go.

AMD tease 8K video workload on Vega-based Radeon Pro SSG

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Apr 25, 2017 12:36 AM CDT

AMD is still preparing its next-gen Radeon RX Vega graphics card, but before its big launch next month - fingers crossed - the company teased its Vega GPU was used inside of the ridiculously awesome Radeon Pro SSG graphics card, video editing 4K and 8K content at the NAB show in Las Vegas.

AMD tease 8K video workload on Vega-based Radeon Pro SSG

AMD used its Radeon Pro SSG with 8K video processing in Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2017, while also using the next-gen card in 4K post-processing with Radeon ProRender, something that's used for rendering high-end graphics. PC World reports that the NAB show is "targeted at the TV and film industry, in which 8K is a growing trend. AMD has been wooing the industry to adopt its GPUs".

8K might seem like it's years away, but with RTG boss and ice cream expert Raja Koduri saying that VR needs 16K per eye @ 240Hz for "true immersion", 8K doesn't seem that foreign anymore.

AMD launches dual-GPU Radeon Pro Duo with 32GB of GDDR5

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Apr 24, 2017 11:16 PM CDT

AMD has just launched its latest Radeon Pro Duo, a new dual-GPU graphics card based on the Polaris architecture. The new Radeon Pro Duo and its dual Polaris GPUs offer up to 11.45 TFLOPs of single-precision compute performance, 4608 stream processors, 32GB of GDDR5 RAM (16GB per GPU) and a TDP of 250W.

AMD launches dual-GPU Radeon Pro Duo with 32GB of GDDR5

If you remember back to Capsaicin 2016, AMD launched the original Radeon Pro Duo, but the 2017 refresh is a much better design, and $500 cheaper. The original Radeon Pro Duo launched for $1499, while the new Radeon Pro Duo is priced at $999. The original Radeon Pro Duo was also much more power hungry with its 350W TDP, while the refreshed one slaps 100W off, dropping to 250W.

This isn't a gaming card by any means, just like its predecessor, with the new Radeon Pro Duo joining the ranks of the other Radeon Pro graphics cards, like the insane Radeon Pro WX 7100 graphics card. AMD's newly launched Radeon Pro Duo and its dual-GPUs are ready for intense professional/creation systems, where they can handle 8K content over a single DP1.4 cable (albeit, at just 30Hz). You can connect two DP1.4 cables for glorious, hair flying back in the wind 60FPS at 8K.

What Zelda: Breath of the Wild would look like on NES

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 24, 2017 8:23 PM CDT

Zelda: Breath of the Wild's early development started out as a top-down 2D adventure game just like Nintendo's old-school NES classics. Now one fan has answered the age old question: what if that prototype was actually playable?

What Zelda: Breath of the Wild would look like on NES

Zelda BOTW is absolutely one of the best games ever made, but lots of Zelda fans wonder what the open-world adventure would be like condensed into a classic 8-bit adventure. To answer that question, game dev WinterDrake is making Zelda: Breath of the NES, a fan-made game that combines Breath of the Wild with the original Legend of Zelda on NES.

Breath of the NES features a dynamic day-to-night cycle as well as a physics system, and has a slew of new items for Link's disposal. You can try the demo out right now on the itch.io page.

Blizzard paves the way for Diablo II Remastered

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 24, 2017 7:32 PM CDT

I have strong confidence that Blizzard won't mess up Diablo II: Remastered, and my worries have been allayed.

Blizzard paves the way for Diablo II Remastered

When I first heard Blizzard plans to remaster classic games like Diablo II and StarCraft, I was very concerned. As a long-time D2 player, Blizzard's recent moves with Diablo III completely alienated me from the franchise.

Gone were the best features that made Diablo II such a great game: chat screens, trading, 8-player co-op, and game room lobbies, all of which were facilitated via the original Battle.net framework.

NASA astronaut sets a new record for time spent in space

Lana Jelic | Science, Space, & Robotics | Apr 24, 2017 6:17 PM CDT

NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson has set yet another record. After becoming the first woman to command the Space Station in 2008, and the first woman to command the Station twice (on April 9th, 2017), she has now set the record for cumulative time spent in space by a US astronaut.

NASA astronaut sets a new record for time spent in space

At the moment of breaking the record, Whitson spent 534 days, 2 hours, and 49 minutes in space. And with the recent extension of her stay at the International Space Station, she will accumulate even more time. When she returns to Earth, she'll have spent more than 650 days in space, and decades supporting spaceflight from the ground.

Until now, the record-holder, when talking about the US astronauts, was Jeff Williams with 534 days, 2 hours and 48 minutes of cumulative time in space.

Rumor has it Creative Assembly might be developing a sequel to 2014's notorious thriller Alien Isolation.

Alien Isolation 2 might be in development

According to Official PlayStation Magazine the devs at Creative Assembly could start earnest work on Alien Isolation 2. ''Our sources tell us that after work is finished on Halo Wars 2, a new Alien game may start development over at Alien Isolation dev Creative Assembly," reads a page in next month's issue of OPM. Halo Wars 2 has since shipped on Xbox One and PC, and SEGA has expressed interest

Creative Assembly recently expanded to almost 400 people after acquiring Crytek's Black Sea studio, the bulk of which worked on Halo Wars 2. However it's all up to SEGA whether or not Alien: Isolation 2 happens or not. The first game sold 2.11 million units in six months, which SEGA described as "weak".

Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 takes 5 minutes to load on PS4

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 24, 2017 3:17 PM CDT

Remember when Sony and Microsoft told us that installing game discs onto consoles would improve loading times? Well...that's only half true. Games like Bloodborne have poked holes in those assurances, and now the newly released Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 does the same. Even older ZX Spectrum games from the 80s loaded faster than Sniper Ghost Warrior 3.

Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 takes 5 minutes to load on PS4

According to Eurogamer, Sniper Ghost Warrior 3's initial startup takes almost 5 minutes to load up on PS4. No, really. But there has to be a trade-off right? Certainly making gamers wait that long has some sort of positive effect on future loading times? Kind of...but the five-minute loading sequence triggers every time you cross one of the game's four main zones.

The devs at CI Games have issued a formal statement addressing the loading times. According to the devs, the huge starting load times allow for quicker fast-travel and checkpoint loading.

Blizzard working on new mobile games

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 24, 2017 2:18 AM CDT

Blizzard is currently planning to ramp up its mobile games offering, and is hiring new engineers to power the platform's dev toolset.

Blizzard working on new mobile games

The news was gleaned from a new Blizzard job listing that calls for a software engineer for its mobile initiative. "Blizzard Entertainment is seeking a talented and enthusiastic software engineer to contribute to Blizzard's mobile gaming efforts," reads the listing. "In this role, you will create tools that will empower our talented designers and artists. The ideal candidate will be self-directed, and have proficiency with developing powerful tools and content creation pipelines."

NeoGAF's Nirolak posits that the new game could be related to Overwatch or Starcraft, and that makes sense, as Blizzard typically ties in its key IPs with its mobile-based titles. Blizzard's mobile gaming arm recently flexed with the considerable success of Hearthstone, and interestingly enough Blizzard actually released a StarCraft mobile game called Supply Depot 2.
