Monkey pukes, craps on Sea of Thieves dev during live stream

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 10, 2019 3:28 PM CDT

A squirrel monkey had a few accidents on a recent Sea of Thieves livestream, creating some rare hilarious moments for a Rare dev.

Monkey pukes, craps on Sea of Thieves dev during live stream

During a recent Sea of Thieves livestream focused around new pets coming to the game, the devs at Rare brought a wild squirrel monkey to add some tropical flavor to the mix. But the flavor wasn't very tasty and Antonio, the fuzzy tree-hopper, actually vomited and then pooped on Rare's Jon McFarlane on the stream. Rare acknowledged the mishap with a humorous update on the video's description: "Is that a real live monkey on Jon's shoulder? What could go wrong? Oh... yes, that could go wrong. Sorry Jon."

The moments are unfortunate, but also quite priceless. It's a warning to anyone bringing wild animals to a live broadcast. Anything can happen, including a big mess. At least Rare captured what owning a pet is really like. I wonder if Sea of Thieves' pets will do this too?

New Shantae, Gungeon, and Rayman games exclusive to $5 Apple Arcade

At the new iPhone event in Cupertino today, Apple revealed new details around its game subscription service Apple Arcade. The service is slated to launch September 19 on iOS 13 devices, and September 30 for iPads and Apple TVs. The Mac version will come later in October. The company boasts that Apple Arcade will have a huge 100 games that're all 100% exclusive to the service, including titles from publishers and developers like Square Enix, Ubisoft, PlatinumGames, SEGA, Konami, Disney, LEGO, and more.

All games can be played entirely offline (it's not game streaming like Stadia) and supports cross-saves across iOS, Mac, and Apple TV devices. Subscribers can share with up to six family members with the family sharing plan, too. Launch games include a new RPG from Square Enix, a Rayman platformer, a new Shantae game, and a Pac-Man battle royale. Some games even support Xbox and DualShock 4 controllers on specific devices.

Control FPS drops fixed with new patch, but only on PS4

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 10, 2019 1:50 PM CDT

Control's new FPS fix update is now live, but the patch is only out on PS4.

Control FPS drops fixed with new patch, but only on PS4

At launch, Control ran pretty bad on base PS4 and Xbox One consoles. The frame rates dropped as low as 10 FPS in some cases, making the game widely panned and damaging Remedy's overall image. The PS4 has a 100 million install base and it was absolutely critical the new IP ran smoothly at all times on the system...but Control simply pushed the bar too far (the game was obviously made for the full brunt of ray tracing on PC).

Now Remedy released a new digital patch to address the frame drops. The September Update is now available on PS4, bringing numerous optimizations like stability performance updates and FPS streamlining on all platforms. The update is scheduled to drop on Xbox One and PC sometime soon but there's no concrete release date yet.

Byton's first electric vehicle has a giant 48-inch screen in the dash

Anthony Garreffa | Electric Vehicles & Cars | Sep 10, 2019 9:34 AM CDT

All eyes have been on Tesla for years with its growing family of electric vehicles, but now Byton has joined the match with its first EV in the new M-Byte SUV -- and it feels like it's ripped right out of the future.

Byton's first electric vehicle has a giant 48-inch screen in the dash

Byton has used an eye-catching 48-inch display built into the dash, as well as multiple control screens including one built-into the steering wheel itself.

Byton is touting 224 miles of WLPT range (less on EPA scale) from its 72 kWh version of the M-Byte, while the larger 95 kWh model with dual front/rear motors has up to 270 miles of WLPT range. The 72 kWh version has 270 horsepower, while the higher-end 95 kWh model packs 402 horsepower.

Samsung Galaxy Fold supports 'hundreds' of apps including Facebook

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Sep 10, 2019 9:11 AM CDT

Samsung is close to re-launching its first foldable smartphone in the revised Galaxy Fold in the coming weeks, and now news is breaking that the company worked with Google on foldable apps for the Galaxy Fold.

Samsung Galaxy Fold supports 'hundreds' of apps including Facebook

Samsung worked with both Google and Android developers in order for "hundreds" of apps to be optimized for the Galaxy Fold, with the likes of Amazon Prime Video, Facebook, Spotify and Twitter all joining the fray. They are some of the largest apps in the world, so it's a big deal that they'll work on Samsung's new halo smartphone.

Also remember that Google has released Android 10 (formerly named Android Q) which has improved foldable phone support, but the Galaxy Fold won't launch with Android 10. We should expect a solid launch that will hopefully only improve moving into Android 10 and the Galaxy Fold 2 in 2020.

Gears 5 developer says Xbox Scarlett has dedicated ray tracing cores

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Sep 10, 2019 7:23 AM CDT

I've been expecting the flagship next-gen Xbox to be a beefier console than the PlayStation 5, but according to the latest on Xbox Scarlett it'll do one better -- it'll have dedicated ray tracing cores.

Gears 5 developer says Xbox Scarlett has dedicated ray tracing cores

The news is coming directly from an interview between Gears 5 developer The Coalition, and GameSpot which interviewed technical art director Colin Penty about what's next for the Gears franchise. He talked about exciting new hardware the team will get to play with, especially the grunt under the hood of Scarlett.

Penty said: "We don't have anything to announce right now in terms of Gears with the new hardware--but I'm definitely super excited about what the new hardware could do. Having dedicated ray tracing cores is huge".

50 state attorneys general launch antitrust probe into Google

Anthony Garreffa | Hacking, Security & Privacy | Sep 10, 2019 12:45 AM CDT

Google is in some hot water right now, with 50 state attorneys general (had to Google that, it is indeed attorneys general and not attorney generals) launching a new antitrust probe into Google.

50 state attorneys general launch antitrust probe into Google

The leader of the 50 strong AGs is Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who has said the investigation will kick off looking into Google's advertising business, before it looks deeper into how the company operates itself. On the steps of the Supreme Court, Paxton said: "The facts will lead where the fact lead".

What happens from here? Well, the antitrust probe isn't a lawsuit just yet -- but if the company has broken US antitrust rules then Google could be broken up into smaller pieces. For example, YouTube has long been accused of censoring conservative voices, personalities, channels, and normal everyday people -- yet they can't be held accountable, yet.

Overwatch on Nintendo Switch is locked at 30FPS

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 9, 2019 10:51 PM CDT

Now that we know Overwatch is coming to the Nintendo Switch, the next question is what resolution and frame rate will the game roll out with.

Overwatch on Nintendo Switch is locked at 30FPS

Thanks to a new interview with Overwatch producer Wes Yanagi and Eurogamer, we know that it will be at 30FPS in both docked and un-docked mode. Yanagi explained: "So really what we wanted to do when we started this whole thing was to really deliver on that authentic Overwatch experience".

He continued: "Our goal was making sure it could run smoothly and look the way that we're happy with. So, it runs at 30fps, docked at 900p and un-docked at 720p, and it runs really smoothly. I think when you play it, and you get your hands-on it, you just go, yeah I'm playing Overwatch".

Intel confirms it has indeed lost CPU market share to AMD

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Sep 9, 2019 9:41 PM CDT

We all knew that AMD had been doing some damage to Intel over the last year or two with its excellent new Ryzen CPUs, but now Intel itself has confirmed the news -- it has lost CPU market share to AMD, and it is going to fight harder from now on.

Intel confirms it has indeed lost CPU market share to AMD

Jason Grebe, Corporate Vice President, General manager Cloud Platforms and Technology Group, speaking to an analyst at the Citi Global Tech Conference said that Intel lost CPU market share to AMD and that the company will have to fight more aggressively to continue its dominance in the market.

While his comments don't acknowledge AMD by name, he says Intel lost "some channel desktop share" to who we can only presume is AMD.

1984: Google's new Nest Hub Max: ALWAYS scanning faces in your house

Don't worry -- Google having an always-watching camera inside of your house will be totally private. I promise. I won't have to write a story years from now that some data leak has occurred, and millions of hours of footage of random people -- including families with young children, will have their videos from within their living room leaked.

Google has just unveiled its new Nest Hub Max smart display, which bakes in a front-facing camera and something Google calls Face Match. Face Match uses facial recognition technology to remember what you, and other people in your house, look like.

The company claims it will use captured faces to build personal identities, and then personalizing the data it displays such as calendars and Google Duo messages, to who it recognizes.

An entire 1630-pound undersea station mysteriously VANISHES

Anthony Garreffa | Science, Space, & Robotics | Sep 9, 2019 8:21 PM CDT

Something strange happened on August 21 -- an environmental monitoring station on the very bottom of the Baltic Sea off of the coast of Germany, went completely missing. Yeah, it is GONE.

An entire 1630-pound undersea station mysteriously VANISHES

The Boknis Eck Observatory was sending out its usual data transmission when it all of the sudden just stopped, so the team sent divers down to the bottom of the ocean to check it out and discovered it just wasn't there anymore. The entire 1630-pound (740kg) observatory has disappeared, with the divers only finding a cable -- the observatory had been torn away from the cable and taken.

Hermann Bange, a marine biologist for GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel explained: "The devices were gone, the divers could not find them anymore. When the divers reached the bottom of the sea last week at the observatory's location, they found only the torn-off land cable. It was completely shredded".

Wikipedia co-founder tweets about CANNIBALISM, drinking human blood

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Sep 9, 2019 7:26 PM CDT

I'm sure we've all had those thoughts -- eating human flesh, drinking human blood, chilling with your friends and that thought pops into your head 'yeah, I think your skin would taste nice'. Except, no normal person does that -- but that doesn't include Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger.

Wikipedia co-founder tweets about CANNIBALISM, drinking human blood

Sanger took to his personal Twitter with a poll that asked if people would be "in favor of a law against cannibalism, defined as eating living or deceased human flesh *or* drinking blood". But don't worry, he's not crazy as he addresses that question in a direct follow up tweet saying "in case you think I'm crazy for asking" (the question about cannibalism and drinking human blood).

The follow up tweet provides a link to trade between China and Korea for delivering aborted (and still-born) children to be consumed for "health reasons". The link goes to a Washington Times article that talks about South Korean agents seizing pills made with the flesh of human fetuses manufactured in China.

Last of Us Part II release date reveal may happen later this month

After months of silence, Naughty Dog just sent out media invites for a special The Last of Us Part II event in LA for September 24. Both Sony and Naughty Dog have been quiet on the sequel's progress, especially after skipping E3 2019, but that should change with a big info blowout during the show. We'll likely see new gameplay footage accompanied by a release date confirmation, which sources say will be in early 2020.

The game will chronicle Ellie's harrowing story of hate as she carves a path of bloody vengeance across the wasteland, and also introduces a new religious-based enemy faction that's quite crazy.

Death Stranding gameplay blowout set for September 12, 13

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 9, 2019 5:29 PM CDT

Hideo Kojima will show off a combined 80 minutes of new Death Stranding gameplay footage at this year's Tokyo Game Show.

Death Stranding gameplay blowout set for September 12, 13

On the heels of the bizarre magical pee video footage shown off at Gamescom, Kojima Productions plans to unleash a Death Stranding gameplay blowout in just three days. The volley will start on September 12 at 3AM EST with a massive 50-minute in-game demo, and then another on September 13 during the same time slot.

We have absolutely no clue what'll be shown at the event. Death Stranding is always a complete surprise, and we could see more somewhat normal-looking open-world traversal to the ultra-weird shadowy magic from the Man in the Golden Mask. We already got a primer on Norman Reedus' Funky Fetus tank-baby and an in-depth explanation of the weird monsters that roam the fractured world.

New Greedfall gameplay shows expansive RPG combat, skills, and items

Ahead of Greedfall's release tomorrow, Spiders releases new gameplay showing expansive RPG elements like dynamic combat, item customization, and a deep skill system.

New Greedfall gameplay shows expansive RPG combat, skills, and items

Greedfall looks pretty ambitious and could be Spiders' best game yet. Hailed as a cross between Dragon Age, The Witcher, and even Assassin's Creed's stealth elements, the game looks to be a strong RPG that could rival today's AAA releases. It's a singleplayer-only game with a unique and original story of pirates and magic, kind of like an old conquistador myth or tall tale, but its real shining beacon is the RPG mechanics.

Spiders looks like it's packed some serious depth into Greedfall. It looks to carry all the major hallmarks of a great RPG. The combat is squad-based, and is like Dragon Age's mix of real-time and tactical, complete with status effects like stagger, poison, etc. It may not let you switch characters though, so your party might be on an auto-battle AI system. There's an armor system, a bestiary with towering monstrosities with different strengths and weaknesses, and a huge smattering of magical attacks to manipulate your foes with. And of course you can blast foes with pistols, rifles, and blunderbusses straight out of the explorer era. Sadly there's no confirmation of skill combos...but I hope they're in.

Shenmue 3 refunds could take up to 3 months to process

Shenmue 3 refunds could take up to 3 months to process

Today Shenmue 3 developer Ys Net revealed more details about the game's refund process. The developer says refunds to Kickstarter backers will be offered during the next survey period, which could last "up to two weeks," meaning backers will have a brief window to apply for a refund. Surveys are a way for Ys Net to keep tabs on backers and update shipping info, platform changes, and refunds.

Since Epic is fronting the bill for all Kickstarter refunds following Shenmue 3's timed Epic Store exclusivity, the refunds could take as long as 3 months to come in.

New Resident Evil is like Saw with four-player co-op survival

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 9, 2019 1:59 PM CDT

Capcom today showed off Project REsistance, a new four-player co-op survival game that's a lot like Left 4 Dead, RE Revelations, and even a splash of Saw.

New Resident Evil is like Saw with four-player co-op survival

Just as we predicted, Project REsistance is a multiplayer game centered around four-player shoot-em-up survival. Capcom didn't really reveal a whole lot of details today, but the new teaser trailer said quite a bit. The game centers around four Raccoon City survivors in a diabolical Saw-like compound filled with death rooms, traps, and hordes of zombies, complete with an evil Jigsaw-esque mastermind watching the mayhem and running the show. It's likely a cruel Umbrella experiment. A weird cybernetic Mr. X was also shown that's controlled by the Big Bad (as if Tyrant wasn't terrifying enough).

We should expect Project REsistance to be a live game with online-focused engagement and play. We should see four players teaming up online to battle it out against teeming undead.
